  • Rumor: TBWA to create Apple's iPhone ad launch

Advertising Age reports that TBWA will be handling advertising duties for the upcoming iPhone launch. TBWA, which has worked with Apple since 1997, created the recent "Hello" commercial that aired during the Academy Awards. TBWA isn't a single ad firm itself but is rather an "agency network" made up of 258 full service agencies. You can visit the TBWA\CHIAT\DAY subagency that is working with Apple here.

This being an Apple deal, pretty much everyone contacted for the Advertising Age article declined to comment.

  • Ives wins 2007 National Design Award

Cooper-Hewitt, the design museum in New York, has just announced the winners of this year's Nation Design Awards and you might recognize a name of the list. Jonathan Ives, designer of such items as the iPod, the iMac, and the iPhone, has won this year's award for 'Product Design.' The designs for the iPod nano, Apple TV, the MacBook, and the iPhone seem to have cinched the win for him.

Kudos to you, Jonathan , and the whole team of designers at Apple.

  • Listz - a powerful organizer with rich media, iPod exporting and more

Getting organized is all the rage lately, what with an endless sea of GTD apps, todo Dashboard widgets and Growl alarm systems. There is certainly something to be said about making a list and checking it twice - especially when your list offers Google Maps in a mouseover popup window, a Dashboard widget, individual alarms, syncing across Macs, iPod exporting and much, much more.

Listz is just such an app, and it is absolutely slammed with features. It even offers backup burning to disc, tabbed lists, extensive styling options, drag and drop support, categorizing list items, and support for printing lists if you aren't bringing your little white or black (or green, or red...) sidekick. But all this functionality comes at a price that is likely to appeal only to the power list'ers in the crowd: Listz sells for $39.95. It isn't the cheapest organization app I've ever seen, but it very well might be one of - if not the - most functional, especially with those slick rich media mouse-over popups.

The only way to tell for sure, of course, is to download a demo for yourself and try it out.

  • Terminal Tip: 6 easy ways to capture your screen

OS X's built in screencapture command provides a simple command-line utility to snap images of your desktop. It offers quite a few options and many of them do not quite work as advertised. Even the manual page admits that screencapture is "not very well documented to date".

To make it easier for you to jump in and get started with screencapture, here are six convenient already-tested variations that you can copy, paste and use. Consider adding these capture methods to shell scripts, to system calls from AppleScript or just running them directly from the command line as needed.

    1. Capture your primary screen as a (default) png file.
    % screencapture ~/Desktop/screencap.png

    2. Capture your primary screen as a jpeg (-tjpeg), including the cursor (-C)
    % screencapture -C -tjpeg ~/Desktop/mycapture.jpg

    3. Wait for five seconds before capturing the screen.
    % sleep 5; say "ready"; screencapture ~/Desktop/mycapture.png

    4. Interactively (-i) select (-s) an area of your screen with the mouse.
    % screencapture -i -s -tjpeg ~/Desktop/mycapture.jpg

    5. Interactively (-i) select a window with the mouse. When the crosshairs appear after issuing this command, press the space bar then select a window with the camera.
    % screencapture -i -tjpeg ~/Desktop/mywindow.jpg

    6. Select an area of your screen and copy it to the clipboard (-c) rather than a file.
    % screencapture -i -s -c

  • Red Wine iMod: audiophile iPod mod

Audiophiles are a picky bunch and willing to pay out the nose for the privilege of (perceived) improvements in audio quality. Audio Junkies has the story that Red Wine, a purveyor of "battery powered purist hi-fi," is planning to offer their iMod modification for 5th generation iPods (they previously offered an iMod for 4th gen iPods). Basically, they bypass the iPod's built-in (relatively low quality) audio amplifier and send the line-out signal straight from the internal Wolfson Digital to Audio Converter (DAC) to the iPod's Dock connector. Together with a proprietary Dock cable this allows for improved audio quality using an external amplifier.

The iMod will be offered at the end of this month for $249 and you have to supply the iPod. Obviously this isn't intended for all those 128kbps MP3s you got from Napster years ago, but for high quality encoding using something like Apple Lossless.

  • Moody: mood-based iTunes tagging and playlists

We've talked about automated iTunes playlist generators before, like MusicIP and The Filter, which purport to create playlists that reflect a certain mood or musical style, etc. In some ways similar, Moody also helps you generate playlists based on mood, however unlike those tools it does not analyze your music or tie into an online database. Instead it requires you to go through your iTunes library tagging your tracks according to mood along two axes: the vertical represents intensity and the horizontal represents happiness. Once your library is mood tagged (with the mood saved in the comments field of the ID3 tags), you can then define playlists (including Smart playlists) based on mood.

The supposed advantage of this method is that your mood tags will be set by you, reflecting your own individual taste, etc. Thus a mood based playlist will more accurately reflect what you think of as intense or happy, etc. rather than some online database. Personally, I think this sounds like an interesting concept, but much like star ratings I don't know if I could get around to tagging enough tracks to make this worthwhile.

Moody is a free download from Crayon Room (donations requested).

  • PTHPasteboard Pro: multiple clipboards and text filtering

PTHPasteboard Pro is yet another multiple clipboard manager, but this one has a cool little trick up its sleeve: text filters. In addition to saving clipboard history like the many other clipboard manager out there, PTHPasteboard Pro allows you to use 40+ text filters to manipulate and transform the clipboard text. For instance, you can create filters that change the case, wrap and unwrap lines, use smart quotes, etc. Furthermore, you can apply these filters sequentially to achieve some complicated effects (check out the screencast to get a better sense for what you can do). Especially used in sequence these filters can be quite sophisticated, like a less powerful TextSoap or BBEdit Text Factory. The Pro version also offers clipboard syncing across different Macs on the same network.

PTHPasteboard Pro is $19.95 and a demo is available. There is also a free version (minus the Pro) that offers just clipboard history without the text filters

  • Mac 101: Transfer files with iChat

    Filed under:

Why pay almost twenty bucks for file transfer programs like Anzan when iChat provides essentially the same technology for free? This gallery shows you how to use iChat to send files to your buddies. Just drag a file into the text entry field in your chat window and press return. iChat notifies your buddy that you're trying to send a file.

If your buddy accepts the file, the transfer begins. By making sure that your buddy gives the okay, iChat adds a layer of security to the system. No one will force you to receive data you do not want or do not trust.
