- Apple Store Vancouver (all but) confirmed
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Retail
Attention, west-coast Canadians! You no longer have to envy your brothers and sisters in Toronto, who have been flaunting their trio of Apple Stores. According to ifoAppleStore, Apple's Sr. V.P. of Retail in Canada, Ron Johnson, kind of spilled the beans when asked about Apple's retail plans at a recent stockholders meeting, saying,
"Patience is a virtue, and your patience will be rewarded soon."
Of course, "soon" could mean just about anything. Keep your eyes peeled, residents of Vancouver. If you see anything, let us know.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Have you ever opened up a Finder window in column view and found yourself confronted with truncated file names? It's quite annoying. Here's a quick fix.
At the bottom of the column, you'll see two short, vertical "pipes" (pictured above). Double click the pipes, and the window will instantly expand to accommodate the longest file name in the window. Hooray!Permalink | Email this | Comments

Anzan is an interesting new application from Yellow Camp Software that sets out to bring the simplicity of iChat to the world of file transfers. Anzan, much like IM programs, requires that both machines have the program installed on it. Once that is done you have a buddy list which shows you who is online and ready for file transfers. Now, before you get your hopes up about transferring files across the continent, both computers running Anzan need to be on the same local network.
That may limit the appeal of Anzan, but it has a few features which make it a killer app for anyone who has lots of Mac on a local network. You can push out the same file to multiple Macs, and even include a little note about the file. You can have a 'whitelist' of senders from whom Anzan will automatically accept transfers, and it is dead simple to use. If you can IM you can Anzan.
Since Anzan is useless on just one machine the price starts at $18.95 for two licenses and goes up from there.

Filed under: Internet Tools, Widget Watch
Today's widget is quite nice. iActu USA pulls news feeds from six American newspapers. You can browse the first few lines of each article, jump to any section of the paper, select one of sixteen available skins and specify the source for the ticker at the top of the widget. Of course, the full articles are a click away. Finally, registering the pro version ($6.95US) will let you print articles directly from the widget.
There is also a French version.

People seem to enjoy tracking the time they spend on various projects, so it's no surprise that a plethora of project-tracking apps are cropping up. We've mentioned dozens in the past, including iRatchet, iBiz, Billable and even On the Job, but now users have a new choice on the 'simple and streamlined' end of the spectrum with Project Calculator from blue banana software. Project Calculator features many of the fundamentals one would need for recording the time spent on projects, such as tracking multiple projects, manually editing projects and the time spent on them, exporting to various formats (CSV, PDF, HTML, etc.) for sharing with clients, wages/cost calculation, searching, filters and much more.
A demo is available, while a licenses costs a mere $14.90.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If you've got a MacBook with a cramped hard drive, and you're kind of handy, check out this official DIY manual from Apple. As someone who has changed the drives on beastly Nubus Macs and 1st generation iMacs, I can tell you that the process described here is a breeze.
So pick up a drive and save yourself some labor fees. This one is a piece of cake.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The only reason I haven't bought myself an Apple TV as of yet is my lack of an HDTV. If I had an HDTV I would pick up one of these magic boxes if only to reward Apple for making it so darned hackable. The latest addition to the long list of 'apps that make an Apple TV do things Apple never intended' is Streamer. This alpha (that's pre-beta, kids, so it isn't even feature complete yet) plugin allows you to stream internet radio over your Apple TV. It ain't pretty yet, but if you have a hankering for listening to some streamin' radio on your Apple TV you can't beat the price.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Everyone seems to be very excited about the possibility of the Beatles catalog being available on iTunes. Now, I'm a fan of the Beatles, but it seems to me that everyone who is big into the Beatles already has all their work, and even if they were missing somethings the real fans would demand high quality tracks than those currently available on iTunes (it would be great if the tracks were DRMless though).
That being said, I am sure some folks are excited about Sir Paul McCartney's announcement that his next release will be his first available for download via iTunes. He also says that the Beatles catalog is very close to being available online.
