  • Replacement Adobe CS3 icons galore

Back in January we mentioned a contest over at Quark Vs Indesign.com to design replacement icons for Adobe CS3. That contest has now ended and the entries are available for download. Coincidentally, Joshua Bryant also has a post up linking to a variety of replacement CS3 icon sets. I have to say I don't really get the judges over at Quark Vs Indesign, as the first place winner there is a bit over the top in my view. Nonetheless, both sites have more subtle icons sets that I think are far superior to the default Adobe periodic table icons. Of all of these, I personally favor the gorgeous set by Adam Betts (right) based on the CS3 box design.

So if you're looking to augment or replace your CS3 icons check out Quark Vs Indesign and Joshua Bryant for a lot of options.

Do you have any other favorite CS3 icon sets not mentioned?

  • TUAW Tip: Four Fun Scroll Wheel tips

    Filed under:

Sure you can use your scroll wheel mouse (or track pad) to scroll up and down your OS X windows but why limit yourself? Here's a quick list of TUAW's favorite scroll wheel tricks:

    1. Zoom your screen. Hold down the Control key while scrolling up on your mouse (or performing a dual-finger up drag on your trackpad). Your entire screen zooms in. Control-scroll (or drag) down to zoom out.

    2. Scroll through your Apps Press and hold the Command key then press and release Tab to display your active Applications. Scroll through your applications left (scrolling up) and right (scrolling down). When an Application is selected, you can move your hand from the scroll button on your mouse to the keyboard to press "H" to hide the application or "Q" to quit it. Release the Command key to switch to the selected application.

    3. Scroll horizontally. In applications with both vertical and horizontal sliders such as, say, Preview, press Shift while scrolling to scroll horizontally instead of vertically.

    4. Open pages in new tabs in Safari. Instead of right-clicking a link and selecting "Open in New Tab", just scroll-button-click a link instead. If you have enabled tabbed viewing in Safari (Preferences -> Tabs -> Enable Tabbed Browsing), your link opens in a new tab.

    Thanks, Fritz Laurel.

  • Get a Mac goes web specific

We just posted about the three new Get a Mac ads, and now Iyaz Akhtar over at The Apple Blog has discovered that the campaign is moving from TV onto the web in a variety of banner ads. Iyaz found three new web ads, including (1) a site specific ad for PCMag.com in which Mac points out to PC that PC Magazine has "said some really great things about Macs," (2) the "Vista Nightmare" ad we also mentioned yesterday (also at PCMag.com), and (3) a "skyscraper" ad (right) touting the Mac's freedom from viruses. Iyaz also made transcripts of the ads for the "obsessive types" out there and (in the comments) even tracked down the Flash swf files so you can see them for yourself.

So have you seen any other Get a Mac ads around the web?

  • The iProduct

E-Commerce News asks what has one letter done to gadgetry? Adding an "i" to the start of your product name instantly identifies it as being intended for, or associated with, the iPod. Howard Kim of iLuv deliberately added an i to his company's product line while Tim V. Kolton of V-Moda headphones i-avoided. He didn't want to get lost in the crowd. Seems to me that if a single letter sends a powerful sales message to potential customers you'd be silly not to i your product. What do you think?

  • Apple 6th most desirable employer for new MBAs

According to Fortune magazine, Apple is the 6th most desirable employer for new MBAs. Each year "research firm Universum surveys MBA candidates on where they'd most like to work." The list was topped by Google, with most of the rest of the top ten in financial services or computer related. Interestingly, Microsoft came in 7th right after Apple. Presumably, these MBAs don't actually know that much about what it would be like to work for these firms, meaning this is just a popularity contest. But since it's reasonable to suppose that a lot of them want to be where the action is, this does probably show something about broader perceptions of Apple, Inc. at this time.

  • iPhone anticipation continues to shake up cell market

    Filed under:

We've already heard from some of the usual suspects on the "iPhone drag effect" that may be impacting sales and phone upgrades in advance of the June arrival of the iPhone; customers who would ordinarily be snapping up new smartphones and renewing two-year service agreements seem to be hedging.

Now, courtesy of the Seeking Alpha stock blog, we have more data on the presales impact of the iPhone: a survey of potential early adopters in the ChangeWave Alliance research network reveals some dramatic shifts in attitudes. Both Motorola and Nokia lose ground on likely purchasers, and those likely to switch carriers are saying Cingular/AT&T more often than they say Verizon, a first in the CA survey. The article suggests that this "striking impact" on carrier and handset businesses "rocks the cellphone industry." Meanwhile, another analyst report on SA anticipates iPhone sales of 17 million units in fiscal 2008 and up to 25 million in 2009. Ye gads.

I'm starting to wonder if the most sophisticated technology in the iPhone isn't the multitouch screen or the visual voicemail -- maybe it's the North America-wide expansion of the RDF.

  • Rig of the Week: We're late again

Yes, Rig of the Week is late again. You still love us, right?

This week's entry is a sweet home/office server. A Mac mini, two 500GB external drives (one for backup, one for media), two 250GB FW drives (set up as a RAID), a D-Link Wireless G Gaming Router with Gigabit Ethernet and a D-Link Gigabit Switch look very nice on top shelf of fabrico's closet. He notes that this closet - and, in fact, his whole apartment - was already wired before he moved in. Lucky guy.

    "Home/Office Server" posted by fabrico.

If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Each Sunday we'll comb through the most recent entries and declare a "Rig of the Week!"

  • "Deluxe" boxed edition of Disco available

    Filed under:

Disco is the multi-session media burning application that features pretty "smoke" (that I've never gotten to work), automatic indexing, support for VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and more (we've written about Disco several times). It's $30US as a download, but soon will be available as a $40US "deluxe" boxed edition. What do you get for $10US? Bundled CD and DVD disc labeling software that includes several templates (you can make your own as well). As for me, I'm content to grab a Sharpie.

Disco requires OS 10.4.3 or later.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Each week TUAW brings you the latest free offerings from iTunes stores from around the world. Surprisingly, today there's no Single of the Week banner ad on the US iTunes store front page or the main Music page. Instead, its spot is taken by discounted albums and the MS. PAC-MAN demo, which you'd think should be available in all countries that sell iPod-games but I only found it in the US Store. (If you find the demo in a non-US store, please let us know in the comments.)

Several Singles of the Week/Discovery Downloads (US, Australia and New Zealand) have not all gone "free" yet. Make sure your "free" items show up as free in your shopping cart or Apple will charge you the normal track price. The UK, Canada and France do not seem to have a SOTW selection this week at all.

TUAW recently posted about Kate Walsh, who is this week's (not yet free) US Discovery Download.
