  • Terminal Tip: Interactive Command-line File Encryption

In OS X, you can always toss a file onto the command line instead of laboriously typing out a complete path name because Terminal supports drag and drop. Over at Murphymac, Murphy has posted a video showing you how to create a shell script using DES3 encryption to protect your files. It takes advantage of this drag and drop support so you can basically run the script and drop the file you want to encrypt. Even if you're not all that interested in encrypting your files, this videocast shows how to think about creating shell scripts with a particularly interactive OS X flare.

  • Woz at Maker Faire

Steve Wozniak showed up at Maker Faire this week - there he is zipping around on his Segway at right - and was classically "Woz."

He said very little of Apple, according to Infinite Loop, but instead spoke about his love of mathematics, his old dial-a-joke line and told the young electronics geeks in the audience how they can "...feel good about doing what you are good at." In other words, he displayed the brilliance and charm that make him such an interesting person.

  • Photoshop Automator Action Pack updated to version 3.5 with CS3 support

I have rekindled my love for Automator and all things automation lately. If you can find any way to fit these tools into your workflow, I highly recommend exploring your options - including Ben Long's just-updated Photoshop Automator Actions pack. This collection of 86 actions has just hit v3.5, bringing support for Photoshop CS3 and a fresh batch of new features, such as:
    • New Auto Color action - executing Photoshop's Auto Color command which puts the control in Photoshop's hands, but allows you to pass the image(s) along to another process without interacting with any kind of dialog or making manual adjustments by hand
    • Add Watermark can now center and rotate watermarks
    • Saving TIFF files now includes all the standard compression options
    • bug fixes and more
Mr. Long also notes that he hasn't included new actions for any of Photoshop CS3's new features - those are coming in a future release.

The beauty of this pack of Automator actions is that they bring Photoshop's automation abilities into the rest of Mac OS X, allowing you to create workflows that pass anything you do in Photoshop on to another app. For example: you could build a workflow that grabs a folder of 200 images, auto-color correct them in Photoshop, add comments and metadata, import them into iPhoto, upload a copy to Flickr and then archive them all to a CD or DVD.

    All with a mere double-click.

Ben Long provides his actions as donationware and asks for a very basic set of optional information to help gauge his audience and where he should take development.

  • Found Footage: Steve introduces the "1984" ad

Here's a great video of Steve introducing the famous "1984" ad to a boisterous crowd (we're guessing the Macintosh team) a week before it aired during the 1984 Super Bowl. I'd say they liked it.

If Steve's good at one thing, it's making a persuasive speech.

    Thanks, Callum!

Update: Reader cuda440 says, "That was at the January 1984 annual shareholder's meeting, held at the Flint Center, De Anza College, Cupertino. I know because I was there, as were nearly all of my fellow Apple employees. Obviously this was before MacWorld, and the shareholder's meeting was where major product announcements were made."

Cool! Thanks for the info, cuda440!

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to iTunes: Free Tuesday. Each week TUAW brings you the latest collection of free tracks, videos, and other media from iTunes stores around the world. This week it looks like the iTunes hamsters slept in. Not much got updated and some of last week's freebies are still in effect.

    US Music

US: Your Joy by Chrisette Michele (Frepeat)
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. This track comes from Chrisette Michele, who's getting plenty of attention as a vocalist thanks to her appearances on recent records from Jay-Z and Nas. "Your Joy" is something a bit different. Here, Michele is backed mainly by an acoustic guitar. This is a moving, sweet tune that gathers momentum once the orchestration falls in toward the end. It's an unexpected folk-soul surprise.

US: Solta o Frango (Edit) by Bonde do Role
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Bondo do Rolé is probably the coolest thing happening in Brazil right now, and if you know anything about Brazil, that's a huge compliment. These two kids have integrated the party sounds of the Brazilian favela with elements of Miami booty bass and American electro-pop. The result is "Solta o Frango," a track that will blow up your speakers, get the party started right, and have everyone within earshot heading for the dance floor.

US: Back Door Friend by Magic Sam (Frepeat)
For this week's Discovery Download, we focus on the blues. To be more specific, the electric style perfected in the Chicago area. Magic Sam was an early key player in the scene that brought us Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. His cutting and precise style on the guitar led him to play sets with Willie Dixon, but he really blossomed as a songwriter. "Back Door Friend" gives you a glimpse of Magic Sam's heartfelt style - one that begs to be re-examined.

US Videos and International selections follow the jump.

  • Freehand dead, discount crossgrade to Lineform

Rumors of Freehand's demise have been raised and squashed before, but now it's official. Gruber points to this notice that Adobe has canned further development Freehand in favor of Illustrator. Adobe is offering some discounts on Illustrator for registered owners of Freehand, as well as some tutorials aimed at helping folks move over, but they will not be offering any further updates to Freehand. Apparently in an effort to capitalize on annoyance of longtime Freehand users, Freeverse is offering a discount on their competing vector graphics package Lineform. Just enter code "freehand" to get $30 off the regular price of $79.95 until June 1st. This looks like a great deal on Lineform; even if it's not quite as powerful as Illustrator, it's still a substantial vector graphics application for about $50.

  • Preview of Firefox with OS X native form widgets

As we've mentioned before, the forthcoming Firefox 3 will feature OS X native form widgets on the Mac. If you'd like to see what they're going to look like, Josh Aas has produced a preview build for Intel Macs (no PPC yet, though the final build will be Universal). This is very much alpha software with the attendant risk of bugs, etc., but if you're a Firefox user who can't wait for version 3 and native forms, it's probably worth a look.

  • Apple releses "Lost" iPod game

I've heard many people complain that the plot for "Lost" has seemed to wander off lately. Apparently, it has found its way to the iTunes Store.

Apple has released a "Lost" game for iPod [iTunes link]. It features a storyline by the show's writers, familiar settings (like Black Rock and the hatch) and several "quests" to complete, like assisting the wounded at the crash site for hunting for useful goods. Sounds like fun.

The Lost game requires a 5th generation iPod with Software version 1.2 or later, and costs about five bucks (US).

  • Kansas City Apple Store renovations

Attention, Apple fans in Kansas City. You've got about six days (as of this writing) to shop at the Apple Store Country Club Plaza before it closes down for a few days. According to Apple, the store will undergo renovations between May 28th and June 1st to make it "...better than ever." As opposed to "worse than ever," we assume.

    Thanks, Jason!

  • Adobe CS3 may disable your firewall

This is ridiculous. Apparently, part of Adobe's Creative Suite 3 (the Adobe Version Cue CS3 Server) requires the Mac firewall to be shut down in order to install correctly. The Adobe installer obligingly shuts your firewall off, but then neglects to restart it afterwards. Adobe has 'fessed up to the problem (as a "critical issue") and suggests manually starting your firewall. So the long and the short of it is this: if you've installed CS3 you need to check to make sure that your firewall is still running. Go the Firewall tab of the Sharing Preference Pane, and if it's not running, click "Start." Adobe is already on thin ice as far as I concerned with their insanely annoying installers, and now this firewall problem is just plain bad.

  • O'Reilly posts iPod microphone shootout

Over at O'Reilly, Mark Nelson tested all three major iPod microphone add-ons and wrote about his results. He tried out the Belkin TuneTalk stereo, the Griffin iTalk Pro, and the XtremeMac MicroMemo. When all was said and done, all three solutions performed well despite the fact that they were all horrible battery hogs.

The $50 iTalk Pro offered one-touch recording and three input levels but its built-in microphone picked up a lot of hard drive noise. The $60 MicroMemo used a handy boom that avoided picking up iPod noises but had no level controls and could only record mono audio. The $70 TuneTalk Stereo offers a USB port that allows you to record while your iPod is docked and charging but had stability issues for positioning and the microphone, like the iTalk Pro, picked up iPod hard drive noises.

TUAW readers: have you bought an iPod mic? Which one did you buy? And are you happy with your purchase? Let us know in the comments.

Full disclosure: I write for O'Reilly.
