  • Apple seeds iPhone 2.0 beta firmware

According to our sister blog, Engadget, the iPhone 2.0 firmware has been seeded to developers. Before this update, the firmware was listed as version 1.2, but now shows up as version 2.0. Engadget says that the update didn't provide many changes: Cisco VPN tweaked, root-level mail / ActiveSync settings were changed around, but not much else.

  • iTunes Store adds genre drop-down for music

The iTunes Store contains podcasts, TV shows, movies, audiobooks, and iPod games so it is easy to forget (for the sake of this post at least) that it also offers a wide array of music. Apple has recently added a new 'Genres' dropdown to the iTunes Store navigation, so you can find what you're looking for even faster.

And to those snarky commenters out there: yes, it is Sunday which by its very nature is a slow news day.

    Thanks, Toren

  • Reminder: Talkcast tonight, 10 pm ET

Join us for tonight's talkcast as we hit the intertubes once again for a discussion of the week's top Apple stories via the fine folks at TalkShoe -- we had a few glitches two weeks ago but since then it's been pretty smooth sailing.

You can join the conversation on TalkShoe by using the shiny new browser-only client; you can also use the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client that we all know and love. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. You can also listen in on the Talkshoe page or call in on regular phone or VOIP lines: dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077.

  • AppleScript: backup iCal calendars

iCal is great for storing your calendars and appointments, but what if you want to export (or backup) your calendars in case of a data emergency? Well, you could backup your calendars manually; however, AppleScript is so much cooler. Let's automate the backup of iCal calendars through the use of an AppleScript.

  • iPhone forensics market developing

Apparently something big is going down in the iPhone forensics world. TUAW has learned that about a half dozen different firms are actively hunting for developers who can assist law enforcement in reading data off unjailbroken iPhones, both the private and public partitions. We've been in touch with third-party Mac developers who have been contacted.

Want a gig as an iPhone CSI? You'll need a good working knowledge of the iTunes protocol and a way to communicate directly with the iPhone without altering any data that could be used for evidence.

  • iLiberty frees my iPhone

    Filed under:

My refurb AT&T iPhone finally arrived and I found a chance to test out iLiberty+ this afternoon. After wasting a day jailbreaking and messing with my new iPhone, I just could not bypass that annoying activation screen. Yes, I could ssh into the unit and run stuff from the command line but I had to keep working my way around "Connect to iTunes" to get to the SpringBoard screen. So I gave iLiberty+ a try.

After a few false starts, it got going and worked brilliantly. I was able to track progress with the on-screen updates and not only did it activate my iPhone but allowed it to work with a disposable Cingular SIM I had on-hand. All in all, a great success.

After activation though, I could not get iLiberty to work with the iPhone still connected. I wanted to grab screen shots and the program would not launch and stay launched. (I have crash logs if any of the developers are interested.) So in the end, I unplugged the iPhone in order to get the one screen shot you see here.

Part of me wanted to deactivate the iPhone and try again for a screen grab gallery but a much smarter part of me asked "why mess with success?" Given how badly I messed up the phone several times today, that was the part I listened to. A later, complete reboot seemed to fix the problem but I was in no position to go backwards after a day fending off cranky children and an impatient husband, all of whom seemed to think there was a world outside of iPhone.

Update: No, I did not unlock my iPhone.
