  • Firmware Restoration CD 1.5

    Filed under:

Yesterday, Apple released an updated Firmware Restoration CD (version 1.5) for all Intel Mac models. The Firmware Restoration CD is used to restore the firmware on an Intel-based Macintosh in case of an emergency (such as an interrupted firmware install).

You can download the Firmware Restoration CD from the Apple Support downloads website for your specific Mac. These CDs are great to keep around in case of firmware install issues (especially if you only have one Mac).

Apple makes a note that you cannot use this CD to restore the firmware that has already been successfully applied to your system; this is used only for systems that did not successfully get a firmware update applied.

  • iLiberty frees my iPhone

    Filed under:

My refurb AT&T iPhone finally arrived and I found a chance to test out iLiberty+ this afternoon. After wasting a day jailbreaking and messing with my new iPhone, I just could not bypass that annoying activation screen. Yes, I could ssh into the unit and run stuff from the command line but I had to keep working my way around "Connect to iTunes" to get to the SpringBoard screen. So I gave iLiberty+ a try.

After a few false starts, it got going and worked brilliantly. I was able to track progress with the on-screen updates and not only did it activate my iPhone but allowed it to work with a disposable Cingular SIM I had on-hand. All in all, a great success.

After activation though, I could not get iLiberty to work with the iPhone still connected. I wanted to grab screen shots and the program would not launch and stay launched. (I have crash logs if any of the developers are interested.) So in the end, I unplugged the iPhone in order to get the one screen shot you see here.

Part of me wanted to deactivate the iPhone and try again for a screen grab gallery but a much smarter part of me asked "why mess with success?" Given how badly I messed up the phone several times today, that was the part I listened to. A later, complete reboot seemed to fix the problem but I was in no position to go backwards after a day fending off cranky children and an impatient husband, all of whom seemed to think there was a world outside of iPhone.

  • Apple TV update 2.0.1

Apple has updated the Apple TV software to version 2.0.1. This is the first update to the Apple TV since the game-changing Take 2 software was released. Generally, with these "point releases," Apple doesn't change many things (mostly bug fixes and such).

The only significant difference in the update is the implementation of Genres in the "My Movies" list. Have you noticed any new features that we haven't covered? Be sure to tell us in the comments.

Thanks to everyone that sent in a tip!

  • .Mac syncing coming to iPhone 2.0?

One of the biggest questions that I had following the iPhone SDK event was how we non-Enterprise users were going to get the cool new wireless syncing features promised to ActiveSync Exchange users. My first guess was that Apple was planning to fold something like that into .Mac, and now iPhone Alley has unearthed something to suggest this might be right.

In the just released SDK beta 2, iPhone Alley found a string within a preference bundle that reads: "Syncing with this Dot Mac account will turn off syncing for other Dot Mac accounts and delete any existing synced data." This suggests the possibility of wireless syncing for non-Exchange users. Frankly, this would make a lot of sense. It would add considerably to the (presently somewhat questionable) value of .Mac and give us consumer types access to some of iPhone 2.0's neatest features.

  • Will the iPhone 3G frolic in the summer sun?

    Filed under:

Way back last year, Steve Jobs mentioned that a 3G iPhone would debut some time this year. Then we started seeing iPhones being clearanced. And now, Yahoo reports that the 3G iPhone is on-track for, um, real soon now -- as early as Q3 2008 with a possible Q2 launch.

Everyone and their brother has been waiting for the 3G iPhone. So is this report reliable? AT&T declined to comment on specific launch dates. Apple declined comment. Yahoo bases its article on a report by Bank of America analyst Scott Craig. But it fits into what (a) everyone expects and (b) we already know. Is there anything new here? Possibly not. More from Apple Insider and iPod observer about possible Hon Hai 3G contracts and Kevin Rose's 3G iPhone predictions.

Does this spin & speculation make any difference to your purchasing plans for the iPhone of today -- buy now, or wait until something better comes along? Let us know.

  • After years of waiting, Shockwave Player plugin finally goes Universal
Seems like I've always had two copies of Safari on my Intel iMac at home -- one vanilla, and one with the "Open using Rosetta" checkbox flagged. Why would I need to keep a legacy browser on hand? Well, when you have young children, the Shockwave-based games at nickjr.com and other kid sites depend on the Adobe plugin for animation and interactivity, and there wasn't any Intel version. "Be patient," I told myself, as the plodding launches of the Safari Rosetta copy drove me and my kids nuts. "Adobe's going to release the Universal Binary soon. Surely, by the end of 2006, they'll do it."

Now, a full two years since the introduction of the original Intel Macs, we finally have the last big-ticket plugin recompiled and rewritten as Shockwave Player 11, all ready for the no-longer-new machines. Phew. I don't know about you all, but I've got a copy of Safari that's just begging to be thrown in the trash. Note that Adobe's Shockwave badge on the front page still redirects to a "how to run Shockwave on Intel Macs" instruction sheet. Go straight to the download and skip the static.

    Thanks Andrew & Alan

  • Flickr find: iPhone in the hopper

While browsing our Flickr pool, we came across this shot of an iPhone perfectly perched by the toilet. Oh, don't be squeamish. You would if you could.

In fact, you can. The flexible arm holding the iPhone in place is a Naja King. It's a 3-foot coil which can pivot to hold your iPhone (or iPod touch) in either a landscape or portrait orientation, and pivot 360 degrees. The coil is made of steel and the grips are scratch-proof. They're $39.99 each.

Now you can enjoy your movie while keeping your hands free... for other things.

  • MacTech re-releases VBA to AppleScript Transition Guide

    Filed under:

As someone who spent months hand-crafting Visual Basic scripts in Microsoft Office, only to have Microsoft pull the rug out from under me with the release of Office 2008 (they abandoned VB support for the Mac. Grrr.), I'm very grateful to MacTech magazine and longtime AppleScript guru Paul Berkowitz.

MacTech has re-released Paul's 150-page guide for making the transition from VBA to AppleScript (originally printed in the April 2007 issue of the magazine, and also available in modified form on the Microsoft Mac BU site). It's highly detailed, with step-by-step instructions. It looks like I know what I'll be reading next week (and if I run into trouble I can always bug Cory for help).

You can download the guide as a PDF for $9.95US, or get the PDF plus a hardcover version for $19.95US. Both options include a free subscription to MacTech magazine, which is a great bonus for anyone who likes to dig into the underside of Mac OS X. If your wallet is a bit light, you can read the entire thing online for free.

  • Cool South African iPod ads

    Filed under:

Last year, we pointed out this cool campaign for iPods with video in South Africa. Tiny boxes of movie popcorn, posters and even a miniature "trailer" announced the idea of "Movies in your pocket."

Today, Creative Bits describes another iPod campaign from South Africa. It features a set of earbuds that lead not to an iPod, but a pocket full of music, if you will. In one ad, a rock band does its thing in a woman's purse. In another, a boy band croons on a desk and a hip-hop act features a microphone wire that leads to the wearer's earbuds.

The images are great, and quite different from the silhouette ads we see in the US. Have you seen an interesting campaign or ad in your neck of the woods?

  • Quicklook your downloads automatically

Here's a great trick from Macosxhints.com -- set up your Mac to automatically preview all downloads with Quick Look.

It's a simple two-step process. First, install the Quick Look Droplet, a simple application that displays any file with Quick Look. Next, set your browser preference to automatically open certain file types (say, PDFs, Word documents and JPGs) with the droplet. It's much snappier than launching Preview or Word.

  • Sandvox 1.2.7 is ready to go

Earlier this week, Karelia released Sandvox 1.2.7. If you're unfamiliar, Sandvox is a great WYSIWYG website development application. It's really fun to use, and features .Mac and iLife integration, templates you'll actually want to put up on your site and a great user interface (in fact, it was the runner up in Apple's 2007 Design Awards for Best Mac OS X User Experience).

Version 1.2.7 is a minor update, but includes some important changes, like
    • Improvements to iMedia Browser, including new movie thumbnailing code
    • Graphical Title Text replacement now works again under Leopard
    • Updates to the Digg pagelet
There's more, of course, and you can get the full run down here. Once you've got your Sandvox site up, share it at Sandvoxed.

Sandvox now requires 10.4.11 or 10.5.x, is a Universal Binary and comes in both pro ($79US) and "regular" ($49US) versions. Version 1.2.7 is a free upgrade for registered users.
