- Track your packages on your iPhone
In addition to running The Apple Blog, I also run an interactive design/development firm called Sabotage Media where we build interactive jazz for clients and ourselves.
Something that we released recently was a little web app called TrackThePack that basically lets you track the various packages you have en route to you. It has RSS feeds and Google Maps built in so you know it’s hot stuff.
So how does this relate to Apple? Well while we do believe TrackThePack is the best package tracking app on the web, we’re pretty much positive it is the best (and possibly the only) tracking app designed to work specifically on mobile Safari (iPhone & iPod Touch).
So go ahead and check out TrackThePack on your iPhone or iPod Touch. But be careful, your addiction to tracking the shipping status of your new MacBook Air might get worse by doing so. Consider yourself warned.

The Financial Times and other sites are reporting that Apple is mulling a subscription plan that would allow users to download unlimited songs to their iPod or iPhone. To get unlimited downloads, you would presumably have to pay a higher premium when you purchase the device, but then you would have the ability to download any songs or albums from the entire iTunes music library. The subscription would probably be non-transferrable, so if you upgraded your device you would have to pay another premium.
Several other online music services, like Napster, have subscription models where you pay a monthly or annual fee for access to their downloads. If you stop paying the recurring subscription fee, your downloads will no longer work.
Steve Jobs has stood by the current business model of the iTunes music store, but it’s clear with the new iTunes Movie Rentals that they are interested in exploring other business models. Clearly not everyone wants to “own” their digital content.
I’m not sure I would go for this model. I buy maybe 1-2 albums a month, but I upgrade my device regularly. I’ve had 3 iPhones since June, for instance. I don’t mind paying $1 per song and having the ability to burn CD’s and keep my music forever. I listen to my music over and over again, and usually only buy a song or album when I know I like it.
Would you pay a premium to be able to download unlimited songs and albums from iTunes?

Chimoosoft created this fantastic little donationware app called TubeTv. With this app, you can save video files from YouTube and other sites and make them playable on your Mac, iPod, or Apple TV. There are of course other ways to do the same thing, but a standalone app that grabs your URL from your default browser, converts it to your desired format, and adds it to your iTunes library makes it very simple.

CNN Money is reporting that Adobe has announced that it has begun work on a Flash player for the iPhone.
Last month Jobs said Flash wouldn’t be added to the iPhone anytime soon due to performance issues. Shortly there after, Jobs also announced the released of the iPhone SDK for creating iPhone native applications.
Today, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen announced that they had begun development on an version of the Flash player thanks to the release of the iPhone SDK. As with all iPhone native applications, the Flash player will be distributed through the iTunes App store once that launches.
No word yet in regards to pricing, but I feel pretty confident Adobe will be releasing it for free just as they always have with all previous versions of Flash.
The Adobe/Apple relationship has been a bit strained in the past year, and I find it quite interesting that Apple has kept such strong control over this process to the point where they will actually be controlling the distribution of the most popular browser plugin of all time (at least as far as mobile Safari goes).

Today Apple released its first major Safari update since the release of Leopard.
Taking a look through the improvements it would seem this update is largely for developers.
Sure there are the common security and stability improvements that mainly cater to the average user, but the bulk of the updates ultimately make Safari a more appealing browser to develop for.
The biggest (or at least most noticeable) change is the new Develop menu item that can be enabled. For all practical purposes it is basically the old Debug menu that has now been added as a Preference item so it is more easily accessed.
In addition to the new Develop menu, they’ve made quite a few web standards and application additions.
- Adds support for CSS 3 web fonts
- Adds support for CSS transforms and transitions
- Adds support for HTML 5 <video> and <audio> elements
- Adds support for offline storage for Web applications in SQL databases
- Adds support for SVG images in <img> elements and CSS images
- Adds support for SVG advanced text
Safari continues to establish itself as a legitimate browser worth developing for and hopefully this update will convince both consumers and developers to do just that.
Safari 3.1 is available via Software Update or the Safari page.

Anything rock ‘n roll related makes my ears perk up, so when I heard Guitar Hero was coming to Mac, I was quite stoked.
Overall the gameplay is just about what you’d expect. You can rock out in freestyle mode and just play for the fun of it, or you can start up your own band and have a full-scale career.
I fired up career mode and sent my band, Weak Sauce, on the road pure rock ‘n roll mayhem. After a couple of days of moderate playing, I was able to beat the game on Easy. Unfortunately there is still Medium, Hard, and Extreme to conquer.
Guitar Controller
I had never played any of the previous Guitar Heros so the actual “guitar” controller was new to me. I attempted to just pick the thing up and start playing, but found out quickly I didn’t have a fat clue what I was doing. Going through the tutorials on how to use it was actually quite helpful.
The guitar that comes with the game is actually the same guitar that comes with the Xbox version…it just includes a USB converter so you can plug it in to your computer. Seems a bit cheap to go that route, but it does the trick.
Something worth noting here is that the game is still functional even if you don’t have a guitar controller. I actually found it easer to play with the keyboard than with the guitar.
Game Play
There are quite a few different “extras” thrown in the game, but the core of it all is just playing songs. The money you earn from playing gigs lets you “upgrade” your guitar, outfit, and other things but there didn’t seem to be any real benefit to doing that.
On my MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 3GB RAM), the graphics were quite smooth. I did find the video response to be better when I disabled some of the effects in the game and calibrating the guitar to my computer was beneficial.
Overall this really is a fun game and doesn’t require too much time to get the hang of it. Be sure to read up more of the details and system requirements on the Aspyr site. You can purchase the Mac version for $80.

http://theappleblog.com/2008/03/17/guitar-hero-iii-legends-of-rock/#comments - ActiveState Takes Komodo Edit To The Community
As I’ve been catching up from an illness backlog, I came across this press release from ActiveState – providers of commercially-supported versions of Perl, Python & TCL – on their decision to take their great editor Komodo Edit open source. This editor has been based on the Mozilla code base, and the open source version incorporates the same licenses as Firefox: Mozilla Public License (MPL), GNU General Public License (GPL), and GNU Lesser Public License (LGPL).
Komodo Edit has many features features found in other editors (e.g. TextMate, Xcode) such as code-completion, a code-snippets library, virtual project folders, code folding, and language recognition. Like many editors, it can also be extended via plug-ins with the additional benefit of Komodo plug-ins really being XPI extensions, the same type used in Firefox, with support for all standard Mozilla APIs based on XUL, XBL, and XPCOM. There is also support for Python and JavaScript plug-ins.
Komodo Edit works well on the Mac and is an especially enticing alternative to other editors if you work in a multi-platform shop and would like to use a common tool-set for all developers. Having the full source code available can also be a great learning tool for new developers looking to create large-scale Mac applications or for porting their applications to other platforms.
Coders looking to grab or contribute to the open source version can find out more via the Open Komodo project.
