- Manage secret preferences with Secrets
Here's a clever utility from the creator of Quicksilver. Secrets (no, not the Van Halen song) is a preference pane that lets you fiddle with the hidden defaults of nearly all your applications. For instance, show the iPhoto toobar in full screen mode and make those iTunes arrows link to your library instead of the store.
There's a huge database available, and adding your own secret preferences is simple. Have fun!

Filed under: iLife, Apple, Deals, Holidays
You may recall us posting about Apple's winter iPhoto promotion. This promotion provides 20% off of books and calendars. This promotion was set to expire on February 29, 2008; However, according to Macworld, Apple has extended this promotion until March 7 (giving you a couple extra days to stock up on calendars and photo books). A recent thread on the Apple Discussions board prompted Apple to extend the promotion due to errors that users were experiencing during checkout.
The codes for North American users are:
- NAWinterBook08 for books
- NAWinterCal08 for calendars

If you're a social-network-junkie (and most of us here at TUAW are to a certain extent), keeping all the services up to date has always been a bit of a chore. Thankfully, MoodBlast (written by our very own Brett Terpstra) arrived on the scene to cure our service-update blues, making life super simple when it came to letting people know exactly what we're doing.
One of the most frequently-requested features has been Pownce integration -- something that's not been possible due to Pownce's lack of a full API allowing 3rd-party applications to post to the service. Pownce has since released a new version of the API with posting, and Brett has been quick to add the service to MoodBlast with version 3.0.7.1, released today. Simply enter your Pownce details into MoodBlast, check the Pownce box to ensure you're posting to it, and click 'Blast' as you normally would.
MoodBlast remains donationware, and is available to download now.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple has been on a tear for the first two months of 2008, releasing over 20 software updates. What's been lacking, lately, is a descriptive explanation of the changes. While OS 10.5.2's description was pretty well documented, it wasn't exhaustive.
This silent treatment isn't universal -- thanks are due to Automator World for sharing a description of the undocumented changes in Automator, including
- Show When Run issues
- Tiger-based actions not working because of File-or-Folder typing
- Tiger-based droplets not responding
- Incorrect Find and Filter action results

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Humor, Odds and ends
I believe that a good percentage of our staff here at TUAW is married, female, or both, so being the bachelor that I am, I'll be the one to post the news that Apple Stores are a great place to meet single men, sent to us by reader Naveed (and I do believe this might be the first and hopefully the last time that TUAW has ever linked to Cosmo). Yes, Cosmopolitan ranks the Apple Store as the number one place for women to meet guys (although it is on the same long list as political rallies and steakhouses, so maybe Cosmo has no idea what it's talking about).
But hey, the single male bloggers of TUAW can't help but agree that yes, if you're going hunting for us, there's no better place to go than your local Apple retailer. Not only are us male Mac-heads intelligent, green, and playful, but when you single ladies want to know how to share your iTunes media, or hook up your new Time Capsule, we'll be right there with the answer.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple's Time Capsule hasn't even been shipping for a week yet, and Flickr user "nakedmac" has already dissected his Time Capsule. What may be surprising is that the Time Capsule is no more than an Airport Extreme with a hard drive. But remember when Steve said that the Time Capsule would feature a "server-grade hard drive?" Well, it features a Hitachi Deskstar hard drive. According to the Typical Mac User Podcast blog, the Hitachi hard drive isn't necessarily rated for "server-grade."

Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Cult of Mac, Flickr Find
A long time ago (three years!), we linked a cute series of photos on Flickr that photographer pinkbelt called "The iPod Family." Basically, she arranged her beloved iPods in domestic scenes that were pretty funny. After three posts from us, however, she stopped uploading new shots in the series.
Today, she's back and the iPod Family has some new members: A green nano and a silver shuffle. We're glad you're back at it, pinkbelt!
While we're all in the mood, here are some additional iPod parodies we've enjoyed

Forget those silly video out ports on your iPod's dock. For some serious video fun, build your own video projector.
Instructables member tanntraad built a clever little projection box for his iPod with a mirror and a lens from an old slides projector (remember those?). When the iPod is placed on a screen-sized hole on the top of the box (brightness turned all the way up), its video is bounced off of the mirror, through the lens and onto a the wall. The result is a very cool iPod-powered home theater.
Well done, tanntraad! We love it.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/01/diy-ipod-video-projector/#comments - NewsFire goes free
Filed under: Software, Freeware, Internet Tools
Coming hot on the heels of the 1.5 release, Dave Watanabe's popular RSS reader, NewsFire is now free.
David posted this on his blog:
"After much internal debate, I've made the decision that as of today, NewsFire is totally free. No feature restrictions, no ads, no cut-down 'lite' version... this is the real deal."
Newsfire is just the latest in the growing trend of free offline RSS readers available for the Mac. In January, leading reader app NetNewsWire became a free program, joining Vienna, Safari and even Mail.app as alternatives to the 800 lb gorilla known as Google Reader (also free).
Whether or not some of the other freeware alternatives will be able to sustain development without the support of a company like Newsgator (which owns NetNewsWire) remains to be seen, but in the meantime, I'm loving all these new RSS choices that don't deplete my wallet.
Although David Watanabe has been a controversial figure in the Mac community, he does make beautiful looking software. If you aren't already married to your RSS reader, or you have been waiting for NewsFire to have full Leopard support, now is your chance to try it out.
Thanks Carlo!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We've written about KeynotePro before. They make very nice themes for Keynote that you'll be happy to use for your presentation.
This week, they've updated the "Ohm" theme for Keynote '08. It's been completely rebuilt to use shapes and placeholders native to Keynote '08, contains up to 58 master slides (the Pro version) and two palettes.
The Pro version includes 16:9 and 16:10 aspect-optimized versions, and the new OM '08 EP Edition is optimized for the iPod and iPhone. They look just as great on those tiny displays as they do when connected to a projector via video out.
Both versions require Keynote 4.0 or higher, and the Gill Sans and Helvetica Neue font faces. A single license will cost you $24.95US, though discounts are available for bundle orders and those who purchased earlier versions of the theme.

Apple opened a new retail store at Midsummer Place, Milton Keynes this weekend (that's in the UK, Buckinghamshire to be precise). As usual, we asked any TUAW operatives who may have attended to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt or even the Opening Day Contest's grand prize.
If you haven't gone down to the store yet, when you do get there, show us a little love and set the in-store machines to TUAW for their Safari homepage! Apple Store employees love that.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Even though the Mac BU is targeting March 11 as the ship date for the first official update to Office 2008 (12.0.1), there's groundwork to be laid and preparations to be made. It's in that spirit of watchful readiness that we note the appearance this afternoon of Microsoft's AutoUpdate 2.1.1 updater, available through... well, through Microsoft AutoUpdate 2.1.0, part of the base Office 2008 install. After that, you know, it's turtles all the way down.
Other than the criticality of the update and that it's 2.0 MB in size, we don't know much else, but it's safe to say that this updater updater is a prerequisite for the real updater coming soon. As an Entourage 2008 user who is suffering consistent crashes each time the main window is closed and auto-reopens, I'll count myself among those eager for some fixes as rapidly as possible.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Software, iTunes, Apple, iPhone
One more reason why we can't wait for the iPhone SDK to drop. GameSetWatch has a short interview up with developer Steve D of Demiforce about his new iPhone game, Trism. It's a Bejeweled-like gem matching puzzle game, but the twist is that after getting matched, the gems fall in the direction that the iPhone's accelerometer tells them to fall. It's wild stuff, and you can see it clearly in the video above.
He's playing the game on a jailbroken iPhone, but it's still a work in progress, so the game isn't available to the public yet. Depending on the terms of the iPhone SDK, he's looking at porting it over to that and releasing it via whatever distribution system Apple comes up with. And he cooked this thing up in about ten days (he wanted to rush it to show it off at GDC last week), so if Apple is able to include smaller developers like Steve in their SDK setup, we'll see some terrific software come off the line in no time at all.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If you are looking to jailbreak your iPhone and the most recent iNdependence beta isn't for you, you might be interested in trying out the latest version of ZiPhone. ZiPhone 2.5, which is now available for all users (not just financial donors, who were expected to get the app somewhat sooner than the rest of us) is compatible with the latest iPhone 1.1.4 firmware. Zibri recommends restoring the phone to 1.1.4, not updating, because of potential conflicts within the application cache.
The early e-mails we have received from users has been positive, but as always, jailbreak at your own risk.
