- Webkit gets a perfect 100 on Acid3
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Open Source
In the rather rarefied atmosphere of web standards compliance, the Acid3 suite of browser tests is like a pro wrestler's chair to the back of the head: if you can take it and keep standing, that's very impressive. The Acid3 suite, first released at the beginning of this month, pushes browsers to the very edges of their rendering, SVG, CSS and DOM scripting capabilities -- all necessary for a consistent and interoperable Web 2.0 experience.
As with the earlier Acid2 test, there's been a bit of a horserace among browser development teams to be the first to the finish line with Acid3, including the WebKit squad responsible for Safari's underlying engine; Acid3 dev Ian Hickson gives major props to Apple and the WebKit devs on his blog, including efforts to clear bugs in the test suite itself (he had to work quite hard to find standards compliance issues in WebKit). On Wednesday evening, both the Opera and WebKit teams declared a 100% score -- not a full pass, as there are minor issues to clean up, but nevertheless the test looks like it should. With the Mac nightly build of WebKit available for download, you too can feel the power of this fully operational web standards battle station.

Переслать - Apple settles out MacBook class action lawsuit
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple, Macbook Pro, MacBook
Almost a year after those two photogs first tried to bring a class-action suit against Apple for supposedly underperforming colors on MacBook and MacBook Pro LCD screens, our own Mike Rose has been proven right -- Apple has "quietly settled" the suit, and presumably Apple didn't have to pay much: the plaintiffs apparently had trouble finding other people who had purchased the laptops solely for the "millions of colors" claim.
Which makes sense -- why would you need any more than a few hundred thousand colors on a single screen? Of course, the drawback here is that we'll never find out if you really can get millions of colors on a MacBook screen, as the photographers wanted. For all we know, they might actually be technically correct -- widely recognized as the very best kind of correct.

Переслать - CrossOver Games released, designed to play Windows games on Mac and Linux
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Retail, Software, Apple
Codeweavers has released CrossOver Games, a games-specific version of CrossOver, their Windows emulation software. Jeremy White has the story behind the release over on their blog -- apparently the application team wasn't working quite as quickly as they wanted, but the games team was chugging right along in terms of compatibility, so they decided to go ahead and ship what they'd done with games on its own.
The compatibility list isn't bad (most of the Steam stuff is on there, which is great, although it is a little weird that they brag about World of Warcraft and EVE Online, considering that those two run natively on Mac just fine; guess you Linux folks need your MMO fix, too) but nothing really jumps out here that might encourage you to use CrossOver rather than just, say, Boot Camp-ing the game up yourself. DirectX 10 is apparently causing problems, too, since neither Crysis, Gears of War, or Unreal Tournament III are on there.
Still, a valiant effort, and if you're desperate to get one of these games working and playable on your Mac (and don't have a spare copy of Windows sitting around to install with Boot Camp), CrossOver Games might be just what you need. TUAW is working on getting a copy of it, and as soon as we do, we'll run it through the grinder and see what we can get to come out the other side.

Переслать - SoundAsleep 1.0
I know many TUAW readers keep their Macs on, and awake, over night for a variety of reasons. If your Mac is in your bedroom, then you have probably been rudely awoken by an errant alert from your Mac. Your sleepless nights are now over, because SoundAsleep is here to guard your slumber.
SoundAsleep is a very simple app that sits in your menubar (above you see SoundAsleep's preferences). Simply set the time you want to start muting your Mac, and when you want to unmute it. That's it. SoundAsleep will take care of it.
It would be nice if you could set a number of different 'muting schedules,' but that's why the concept of a version 2.0 was invented.
SoundAsleep is freeware produced by Nullriver.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Переслать - iPhoneNotes allows downloading and uploading notes to a jailbroken iPhone
The lack of notes syncing on the iPhone and iPod touch just continues to baffle me. Just like To Do syncing it seems like a no brainer, especially in the case of notes since it's such a pain to type anything very long on the iPhone keyboard. The iPhone hacking community has been working on the problems and a clever Mac application called iPhoneNotes bring basic notes transfer between a Mac and a jailbroken iPhone.
The application actually works over wifi and requires that your iPhone be jailbroken. Unfortunately, the developer's site is somewhat lacking in instructions. You need to have OpenSSH installed (and working) on the iPhone and then when you run iPhoneNotes on your Mac it searches for the iPhone with Bonjour. Once it finds the iPhone and you put in your credentials, you should be able to download and upload notes. It does not provide true syncing; rather you download your Notes database from your iPhone, make changes on the Mac, then upload it back. Nonetheless, it works and provides a way to upload notes from your Mac to your iPhone.
Because it requires OpenSSH this doesn't seem like a long term solution. Nonetheless, if you need to get notes from your Mac to your iPhone, this is one of the best options at this time. iPhoneNotes is a free download from V1ru8.

Переслать - Yahoo! Messenger 3 adds voice, in beta
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools
Our friends on the Yahoo! Messenger team dropped us a note alerting us to their newly released Yahoo! Messenger 3 Beta 3 for the Mac. What's the big news with this beta? As you might recall previous betas made Messenger a Universal Binary and added tabbed chats. New in this beta: voice calling.
That's right, you can now do the following with Yahoo! Messenger, just like our Windows running comrades:
- Make free computer to computer calls
- Sign up for a Phone Out account which will allow you to call regular phones with Yahoo! Messenger
- Send free text messages to cell phones (though the receiver might get charged for the text)
- Receive calls from phones on your Mac if you have a Phone In account (these accounts aren't free)

Переслать - TriBand antenna for Time Capsule
Filed under: Accessories, Airport
Quickertek has produced an antenna for the Time Capsule which, according to them, increases the device's range by 50%.
It's compatible with 802.11 A, B, and G, and comes either as a self install kit or an installation service. Or, if you don't have a Time Capsule just yet, you can order one from Quickertek with the antenna pre-installed. It comes with a good amount of cable so you can spend your weekend obsessively placing and replacing it in your home until it's just right. So that will be fun.
The 500GB self-install kit is $129.95US, and the service is $200US. Prices are the same for the 1TB version kit and service. If you want to do it all in one fell swoop, you can order a 500GB Time Capsule + pre-installed kit for $500US, or $700US for the 1TB version.

Переслать - Apple patent suggests flip iPhone
We don't want to use the term "iPhone nano" because we've heard it before, both formally and informally. Yet, it isn't unreasonable to guess that Apple will release additional iPhone models, a small one among them.
According to Everything iCafe, Apple has applied for a patent which describes a hinged phone with a "dual sided trackpad", implying that it could be operated (at least certain functions) with the "lid" open or closed. When the iPhone was first introduced, prior to its release, I imagined the lack of a lid would be a detriment (I'm scratch-phobic). Yet, the only scratches my iPhone has acquired are on its rear (poor little guy).
Of course, Apple -- like so many other companies -- patents ideas and such that they'll probably never use. So, take the whole thing with a grain of iSalt.

Переслать - Huffington Post: New York Apple Stores running out of iPhones?
If you were planning to buy an iPhone at one of the three New York Apple Stores, then you might be out of luck. According to The Huffington Post, the SoHo, 59th Street (5th Avenue Store), and new W 14th Street locations are all sold out of this hot little phone.
At the 59th Street store, an Apple employee was quoted saying, "You can always go online." So, if you are looking for an iPhone in NY, you might be left only two options: AT&T stores, or Apple's online store.
Update: the online US Apple Store is showing "5-7 days" shipping time for both the 8 and 16 GB models.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Переслать - Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1
I'm a big fan of SuperDuper! myself, but Carbon Copy Cloner has also long been a great, low cost option for cloning hard disks in OS X (indeed it's been around longer). Mike Bombich has now released version 3.1 of CCC implementing rsync 3.0.0 "to provide even greater fidelity when backing up using the 'Copy selected items' backup method." Other improvements includes an updated interface and various bugfixes, etc.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a free download from Bombich Software (donation requested).

Переслать - iPhone gaining traction in UK
Filed under: iPod Family, Internet, iPhone
Currently in lead in the UK, Nokia may be given a run for its money as the iPhone is set to be the number one mobile web browsing device. According to iTWire and StatCounter, the iPhone took 0.06 percent of the total internet browser marketshare in the UK for March 2008.
According to StatCounter, the iPhone definitely has some work cut out, if it is to surpass Nokia's 0.15 percent market share to date as of March. iPhone is currently in second place with it's 0.06 percent (which goes up to 0.09 percent if iPod touch browsing is also figured in). But that is still way ahead of the Blackberry with it's 0.02 percent.

Переслать - Microsoft eyeing potential options in iPhone development
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
Over at Fortune, Jon Fortt reports on a conversation with Tom Gibbons (right), the VP in charge of Microsoft's Specialized Devices & Applications group. SD&A is the MS umbrella that contains the Mac BU, along with projects such as Surface, Windows Embedded and Sync. Yes, Mac folk, we've been saying for years that we're special, and Microsoft agrees -- at least that we're "specialized," which is almost as good. Anyway, Gibbons had some interesting comments about MS plans for the platform of the future.
Gibbons says that for the past week a team of Microsoft engineers has been deep-diving into the SDK with an eye to "understand[ing] what we can bring to the iPhone." In addition to the ActiveSync functionality that's part of the forthcoming 2.0 update to the platform, it seems that MS may have some application-side ambitions for the iPhone as well. Considering that the Mac BU is a tidy and profitable division for Microsoft (Fortt guesstimates Mac app revenues for Microsoft at $350 million with $200M in annual profits, which strikes me as high-side but certainly not out of the realm of possibility), the opportunity to extend desktop productivity dominance to more corners of the mobile space (beyond the existing Windows Mobile installed base) must be quite appealing.
Still, there's another quote from Gibbons that underlines Microsoft's perceptions of the iPhone's impact (emphasis mine): "To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in [the iPhone] environment, we're... trying to understand that now." Possibly an honest estimation, maybe a deliberate shading, but anyone who looks at the iPhone market and thinks that Mac users = iPhone owners is operating in a slightly different reality than most of us. Memo to Tom G: Your Windows Office customers are going to want iPhone integration too, and you can take that to the bank.
