  • Apple Store offline
Yup, the US store is down. Couldn't tell you why just yet, but if you really wanted to buy that new MacBook Air this evening, you'll have to wait until it comes back up. When we see something new, we'll post about it here -- or just stay tuned to the comments on this post!

What could it be? A Mac revision? A revamped cinema display? The rumored dead white iPhone? Your guess is as good as ours.

  • Sonos adds slick wireless dock for iPods and iPhones

Sonos music systems are showing up in a lot of homes. They put music into any room of your house without hassle or wires. There are other solutions, including a good one from Apple, but the Sonos system is elegant and it "just works."

Now Sonos has added a wireless dock. Plug it into the wall, put your iPhone or iPod on it, and your device charges. You'll then have audio books, music, and podcasts broadcast to every room of your house that has a Sonos equipped entertainment system.

Even better, you can control your iPhone or iPod from your usual Sonos controllers, including the free iPad and iPhone apps.

Installation was easy. Using the Sonos app on my iPad I added a new device. I was instructed to press the little button on the back of the dock; within seconds my iPhone appeared on the source list, and I could play music or assign the audio to one room or any combination of rooms. It's that easy.

I was thinking how great it would be for out of town guests. I have a Sonos system in the guestroom -- all they need to do is plunk down their iPhone or iPod, and all their content is available.

Sonos has always been very Apple friendly, and this new wireless dock makes it even more so. The device sells for US$119, but when it was announced I thought it might cost more. Sonos owners who have iPods, iPhones or iPod touches should take a look at this product.

  • Track election night on your iPad with the ABC News app

Growing up, election night in my house was always how I imagined the Super Bowl to be for most people. We huddled around the TV and excitedly watched the incoming results with hope and trepidation. But of course election night just isn't a silly game, and the final "score" literally affects hundreds of millions of people, sometimes for decades.

As someone who hasn't owned a TV in four years, I was pleased to see that ABC News has updated their app to provide a fully interactive electorate map. The map shows you the normal color-coded blue and red states for the Senate and how their political makeup stands now. It also shows you the color-coded districts for the House. But what's coolest about this map is its interactivity.

First, you can tap the "results" tab and, starting at 7 PM Tuesday night, an empty House and Senate map will start filling with colors based on who's won in that state or district. But the interactivity goes further. ABC has built in a "What If?" game that lets you play out different scenarios of the final outcomes for the House and Senate races if certain candidates win. For Senate races, for example, simply tap a state and a pop-up will appear with all the candidates running. Tap the name of the person you think will win, and the electorate map will change colors for that state. The bar chart for the total number of seats needed for a majority will also change based on your predictions.

ABC News for iPad is a free download.

  • Found Footage: The geekiest marriage proposal ever

On October 24th, after a two year relationship, Frank decided to propose to his girlfriend Kasey in romantic Central Park, found in the heart of New York City. Lots of people have done this, but never as geeky. Frank got a bunch of techie friends together to pull off this one-take event. Employing musicians, playing Kasey's favorite song, a famous bridge, a rowboat, a bunch of iPhones running custom apps and a MacBook Pro to mix it all together, Frank popped the question.

The result was a big "Yes!" and a video that looks like it came out of the credits of Trainspotting. It's a fun three-minute watch which raises a question: what would have happened if Kasey didn't catch the ring?

  • Facebook holding mobile event on Wednesday

TechCrunch reports that Facebook is holding a mobile event on Wednesday. Why is this of interest to Mac users? Maybe part of the event will include the unveiling of the long awaited iPad app. Also, an update to the Facebook iPhone app wouldn't hurt.

Then again, there's that Android-based Facebook Phone rumor that's been flying around. Hey, maybe that Jobs/Zuckerberg dinner may have been Jobs's way of trying to feel out the Facebook CEO's plans for his company's mobile future.

In probably unrelated news, Apple is also reported to be holding a "secret summit" meeting with select iOS developers that begins on Tuesday. Looks like next week is going to be a busy one for mobile news...

  • Homemade Angry Birds costumes take flight
We've seen Steve Jobs and an iPhone so far, and here come some Angry Birds costumes, from the hit iPhone game. These were all made by crafters (from what looks like fabric, felt, and plastic), and some of them look pretty elaborate. I like the pig costume the best, although dressing yourself in a costume shaped like a large yellow triangular bird has to win points for something.

Very cool, and given how many Angry Birds fans there are out there, it'll probably nab a lot of candy on Sunday. Are you dressing up in a Mac- or iPhone-related costume this Halloween? Be sure to take pictures and send them in -- we'd love to see it.

  • Trick or Treat with TUAW: iPhone 4 and iPad cases from iSkin

TUAW is giving away a gaggle of ghoulishly good gadgets over the next few days. Be sure to come back every day between now and October 31st for a chance to win. The good part of the giveaways? You don't need to wear a costume to win 'em.

With the surprisingly active adoption of the iPad in the healthcare industry, as well as recent concerns about how microbes can live happily on iPad screens, wouldn't it be nice to have something that would at least keep bugs off of most of your device? And since the iPhone 4 is also apt to pick up germs when being used, how about having a way to keep it sanitary as well?

iSkin has a line of iPhone and iPad cases that will make germaphobes happy, since the company has started to use washable silicone materials with embedded Microban antimicrobial protection for some of their products. The iSkin Duo case for iPad and revo4 case for iPhone 4 both use these materials to keep you protected, and they look darn good in the process.

If you're not as concerned about the germs as you are about protecting your investment, iSkin has the great-looking iSkin Vu for iPad and iSkin Solo for the iPhone4. And for four TUAW readers, you're going to win one of these cool cases in a random giveaway. Here are the official rules:

    • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
    • To enter, leave a comment telling us what kind of case -- iPhone 4 or iPad -- you'd like to win.
    • The comment must be left before midnight on Monday, November 1, 2010, 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.
    • You may enter only once.
    • Four winners will be selected in a random drawing. One will receive an iSkin Duo Case for iPad (Value: US$49.99), one will receive an iSkin Vu Case for iPad (Value: $64.99), one will receive an iSkin revo4 Case for iPhone 4 (Value: $39.99), and one will receive an iSkin Solo Case for iPhone 4 (Value: $29.99)
    • Click here for complete official rules.

  • iPhone apps on sale for Halloween
Happy Halloween weekend! This is my favorite holiday of the year, not only because it's a fun time for parties during my favorite season, but also because it seems to be an excellent time for developers to put a little something special into their apps -- like put them on sale. There are quite a few sales hitting the App Store this weekend -- Sega has some of their titles on sale again (including Ecco the Dolphin and the great Shining Force), and Namco Bandai is doing the same. You can pick up Bit.Trip Beat and the original Pac Man game for just a buck each, among a few other good deals.

PopCap has brought Plants vs. Zombies down to a buck for the holiday, and EA has a "Monster Sale" going on, too, with Wolfenstein RPG, Snood, and more on sale for just one cent less than a buck.

All treats, no tricks on this Halloween weekend. There will probably be a few more sales announced before the weekend ends -- we'll try to keep an eye out for them, and let you know when we see them. Want even more quick app sale announcements? Watch our Twitter feed -- we'll often post quick free app and sale app notices there.

  • Apple releases update to fix iPhoto '11 bugs
iphoto 11 updateApple has released iPhoto 9.0.1 via Software Update. The update addresses issues that, in extremely rare cases, could result in data loss when upgrading a library from an earlier version of iPhoto. Indeed, many of our readers have complained of such issues and our own Mel Martin wrote about them in his review of iPhoto '11.

The update weighs in at 33.87 MB and requires iLife '11 and Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later. You can also download the update here and read Apple's knowledgebase article here.

Remember last week's Back to the Mac event where the stunning iLife '11 suite and the jaw-dropping new Macbook Airs were announced? No? Well if you missed it, Lockheed91 has saved you some time and reduced the introduction of the awesome new computers along with the amazing new releases of the incredible new iPhoto, the stunning new Garageband and the extraordinary new iMovie down to a remarkable 104 second adjective-fest. • Review: iPhoto '11 is a very mixed bag

When iLife '11 was announced, I was quite excited to hear there was an update to iPhoto, and even more surprised to learn my local Apple Store had the software in stock the day after the "Back to the Mac" event.

The feature list for the latest version of iPhoto is impressive, and since I do so much photography it seemed a no-brainer to get it. New features include:

    • Full screen mode
    • A direct link to Facebook for posting comments and pictures
    • New slideshow templates
    • New book designs
    • Enhanced templates for emailing photos
    • Letterpress Cards for sending to family and friends

For US$49, with GarageBand '11 and iMovie '11 in the mix in addition to iPhoto, I was ready to buy iLife. Let's go over the changes, then deal with some of the ugly truths.

  • 3G now available on Mount Everest

Happen to be climbing Mount Everest in the near future? Take heart -- you can probably use your iPhone there now. Provider Teliasonera has reportedly installed a 3G antenna at the base camp of Everest, connecting the remote location to a modern cell phone network for the first time. Previously, climbers had to use satellite phones to stay in touch with the rest of the world, and according to Reuters, the summit is still off limits -- the highest video call was made from an elevation of about 17,388 feet, which is where most climbers begin their journey to the summit at 29,035 feet.

Unfortunately, your iPhone will still have to be roaming -- while TeliaSonera has been running iPhone-specific services in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the iPhone hasn't officially launched in Nepal yet. Even though it'll probably cost a ton in charges, you can now call in from Mount Everest's base camp. Now about the actual climb...

  • China's new online Apple Store sells out of iPhone 4s on day one

Just 24 hours into business, China's first online Apple Store has sold its entire stock of iPhone 4s. Writing for The Global Times, Wang Xinyuan says, "Apple Inc's new online Chinese-language store was a big hit with consumers Wednesday after it sold out its entire stock of iPhone 4s on the first day."

Apple hopes to tap into China's fast-growing online shopping market, which saw business of 120 billion yuan (about US$17.91 billion as of this writing) worth of transactions in the third quarter of this year.

More importantly, Apple hopes the online store will further thwart the gray market that has been a consistent problem in China. Supply shortages and the prestige of owning the device have created a large network of unauthorized resellers. Recently, Apple Store security was required to temporarily close a Beijing Apple Store and adopt a one-per-customer policy when customers began to purchase iPhones in bulk and re-sell them right outside of the store.

As for the online store, The Global Times reports that its stock will not be immediately replenished, and is encouraging customers to check back often for updates.

  • Ratings missing from the App Store?

A few readers have notified us that app ratings have disappeared entirely from the App Store in iTunes. The ratings still appear on the iOS App Stores and in browser previews of apps, but for the desktop iTunes view of the App Store, they are nowhere to be found.

iTunes Connect was apparently down for a little while last night, but it's been down before and ratings have never vanished from the iTunes App Store. More likely than not, the ratings and reviews will reappear in the iTunes App Store soon; it's just odd that Apple hasn't sent a note out to developers about this.

  • Microsoft also declares record revenue, but Apple still on top
Apple isn't the only technology company that's posting record revenue this year -- Microsoft has brought in $16.20 billion in the last quarter, which stands as a record with a 25 percent increase from the same time last year. The Seattle giant also increased net income to $5.41 billion, so it looks like Halo Reach (in September) and Office 2010 (in July) sent things in a good direction.

Apple announced revenue of $20 billion last quarter, which puts the Cupertino company on top by $4 billion in terms of incoming money. But Microsoft still rules net income, with Apple pulling in $4.31 billion for the same quarter. That may change next reporting period, given Apple's steam in the industry so far, but no matter which way you slice it, both of these companies are rolling in the dough.

  • Mac 101: In Mail.app, reply with selected text
More Mac 101, tips and tricks for the novice Mac user.

I've been using the Mail app in Mac OS X for a good four or five years now. I thought I pretty much knew most of how to use it, but today I've been pleasantly surprised. I've just stumbled across a nifty little feature that I hadn't known about before, and it's going to make a small, but significant improvement to the way I do email in Mail app.

In replying to an email in Mail.app, when you hit the reply button all the text from that email is inserted into the reply message (like all other email clients). However, having just been sifting through a rather complex message & trying to decipher a few key areas, I selected a specific portion of text to copy and insert into the reply message to illustrate and help clarify a few points.

This is a practice I usually follow, but in haste, I selected the text I wanted to copy before I'd created the reply message. When I hit the reply button, I suddenly realized that I had a reply message with only the selected text from the previous mail present.

If you select text in Mail.app and then hit the reply button, Mail.app will automatically insert the selected text into the reply message whilst leaving everything else behind. This is useful if you want to quote a specific piece of text in a reply message, but not make the recipient trawl through the previous conversations to get there (and it saves you cutting and pasting the text, too).

I'm sure this is quite obvious to veteran Mac users, but that's why this is a Mac 101; for new Mac users, and those slightly less proficient with email, it's a little tip to make your email experience that much more pleasant.

Let us know if you have any helpful tips for using Mail.app in the comments below.

  • Found Footage: iPhone costume update includes working 40" LCD

In 2007, we saw the first generation iPhone in some comically large costumes (video on the next page). Last year we brought you the footage of Reko and John sporting giant TV screens with jailbroken iPhones powering the costumes. They used "updated" iPhones, but still sported square edges and no touchscreen interfaces. This year John Savio goes it alone with an updated, touchscreen iPhone 4 costume that's the best we've seen.

With a light on the back to simulate the LED camera light, a 40-inch LED LCD panel strapped to sandwich board and a 12-volt battery, the entire rig weighs 75 pounds. Quite a way to work off all that candy. Watch a painfully awkward yet strangely adorable video of the costume on the next page.

  • Apple is now the fourth-largest phone maker worldwide

Well that was fast. In just three years, Apple has become the forth-largest phone maker worldwide. According to an IDC report, Apple moved into the 4th position in the 3rd quarter of 2010, overtaking competitor Research In Motion (RIM). As of IDC's report, the top vendors are, in order:
    1. Nokia
    2. Samsung
    3. LG Electronics
    4. Apple
    5. RIM
    6. SonyEricsson
Apple's ascent has also pushed SonyEricsson and Motorola out of the top five. IDC notes that Apple's iPhone as well as Android phones from HTC and Samsung boosted overall smartphone performance in Western Europe. In the U.S., the smartphone market grew in the 3rd quarter while sales of traditional phones fell, despite attempts to add smartphone-like features.

Finally, IDC notes that Apple managed to outsell RIM by 1.7 million units, and Sony Ericsson by 3.7 million units during the 3rd quarter while releasing the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries. All of this despite the "antenna issue" that was supposed to seriously hinder performance.

    Congratulations to everyone at Apple.

  • How the iPad is benefiting Sprint's mobile broadband sales

Sprint recently noticed an increase in sales of its Overdrive (3g/4g) MiFi wireless hotspot, and it seems the iPad is behind it all. In an interview with GigaOM, Sprint's chief executive officer, Dan Hesse, noted that most iPads sold are Wi-Fi only. Since their introduction, his company has seen an increase in sales of the Overdrive.

When asked about the iPhone, Hess refused comment, stating that Sprint policy is to refrain from commenting on its relationship with vendors. He also noted that Sprint is banking its future on great customer experience, a simple value proposition and finally the actual devices (in that order). Currently, Sprint is carrying BlackBerry and Android phones, while arch-rival Verizon is almost a lock to be selling the iPhone next year.

Meanwhile, Verizon is addressing the iPad-plus-hotspot trend directly by offering iPad/MiFi bundles in its retail stores. For those who want to support an iPad in addition to a few other devices, it's not a bad way to go.

  • Calculator's currency calculations currently kaput

OS X's built-in Calculator.app has built-in support for currency conversions. To get accurate results, you have to update the currency exchange rates from inside the application.

This feature is currently broken for many users, as I discovered after it wouldn't work for me. Several threads on the Apple Discussion forums show this is a "known issue" with no known fix at this time. This seems to be happening to users of both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

In the meantime, you can use the "Unit Converter" widget which is still working and updates successfully. You can add the widget by clicking on the "+" in Dashboard, or by double-clicking on it from /Library/Widgets/.

Some users are reporting that other conversions are not working either. I did not have that problem, but if you do you can try deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Calculator.plist file (where ~ means your Home folder).

If you need to do currency conversions but don't want to use Dashboard, you can use Google instead; it will accept plain language conversions such as "20 euro to us dollars" and will offer other currency conversions as well.

  • AmpliTube for iPhone updated to 2.0 - allows you to play along at your own speed
amplitube iRigThis week, the guys from IK Multimedia released version 2.0 of AmpliTube for the iPhone. We took a closer look at AmpliTube 1.0 back in June and were pretty impressed with what it had to offer. Since then, uses have requested the ability to import songs and play them at a custom, slower tempo. Fortunately, IK Multimedia has responded.

AmpliTube 2.0 introduces SpeedTrainer, which allows you to speed up or slow down your imported songs (up to 50 of them from your iPod library or your computer over Wi-Fi) without affecting the pitch. Now there are no more excuses. We expect to hear that Satriani album performed perfectly by next week!

Other new features include five new stomp boxes (in-app purchase required), a four-track recorder with a master FX section (three additional effects requiring in-app purchase), an option to export your recordings as high-quality audio (or in MP3 format via email) and improved sound quality with DSP code derived from the desktop versions of T-RackS 3 and AmpliTube 3.

Apparently, an update to the iPad version will be coming in the next three to four weeks, too. If you've updated, let us know how it's working out in the comments below.

Click here to watch the demo video on IK Multimedia's website.

  • Verizon iPhone definitely coming in 2011, says Fortune

In a profile of Verizon's CEO Ivan Seidenberg, Fortune couldn't quite get him to spill the beans on the upcoming Verizon 'dream phone,' as the story's headline puts it. Still, between the timeline of meetings between Seidenberg and Steve Jobs, and the story of how Verizon and Google found common ground on net neutrality, writer Sarah Ellison lays it on the line. Like the Wall Street Journal before it, Fortune is now confirming a 2011 launch for the long-awaited Verizon iPhone.

The report suggests the phone will be a 3G-only unit (sorry, would-be 4G early adopters) and most likely will not carry a SIM slot and GSM radio to allow worldwide roaming, at least not in the first version of the device. It's also possible that the phone will include live FIOS TV streaming video service, much as the company's anticipated iPad app will do.

We won't know the exact plan until Ivan and Steve take the stage at some undisclosed future date -- but if you're a Verizon customer with your upgrade date coming up in the next few months, you might want to think twice before getting that new Droid while re-upping your contract.

  • Apple Inc. files SEC form 10-K with sales figures
    mac unit sales

Like every other publicly traded company, Apple Inc. is required to file a form 10-K with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission every three months. These typically contain some interesting bits of information that aren't necessarily revealed in press releases. Apple's most recent 10-K chronicles its unit sales and per-unit revenue for its just completed 2010 fiscal year.

Apple sold almost 13.7 million Macs in 2010, a 31 percent increase compared to 2009. Interestingly, portables (not including the iPad) accounted for almost two-thirds of that total. Nonetheless, desktops still grew faster than portables with a 45 percent increase to almost 4.7 million units. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't break out sales of specific models, so we're not sure which machines account for the growth. However, it's a safe bet that the huge and gorgeous 27-inch iMac, and perhaps the latest generation mini, accounted for most of the increase. Overall revenue per unit for all Macs (portable and desktop) dropped off a bit from $1,333 last year to $1,279, which points to success for both the mini and the plastic MacBooks.

The U.S. market has always been the strongest for Apple, but the increasing popularity of the iPhone and the opening of new retail stores overseas seems to be helping Mac sales, too. Overseas Mac growth outpaced the U.S. in 2010 with Asia-Pacific in particular jumping 62 percent to 1.5 million units while Europe was up 36 percent to almost 3.9 million units.

All of these Mac sales, however, are dwarfed by the iPhone and the iPad. Global Sales of the iPhone nearly doubled last year to 40 million units while nearly 7.5 million people picked up the new tablet in its first six months on the market. You can check out all of the details of Apple's 10-K right here.

  • Apple offers unlocked, carrier-free iPhone in Germany

    german unlocked iphones

Now that iPhone 4 sales in Germany have passed from the exclusive realm of T-Mobile to O2 and Vodafone as well, AppleInsider reports that customers there can also opt for a carrier-free version of the superphone. Apple has previously offered unlocked iPhones in some other countries, including France where the option is required by law. However, this is the first time that Germans have been able to order the iPhone from the Apple store there and pop in whatever SIM card they want.

Unlocked and contract-free phones are common in Europe, and SIM cards with prepaid voice and data buckets are readily available. People that travel overseas on a regular basis often buy unlocked GSM phones and local SIM cards to avoid extortionate roaming rates. Of course, avoiding a carrier commitment doesn't come cheap. An 8GB 3GS will run about US$715 in the German Apple online store or at any of the four brick and mortar outlets in Germany. Fourth generation models will cost $866 or $1,017 for the 16 and 32GB versions respectively.

  • TUAW's Daily App: ChuChu Rocket!

Sega's classic ChuChu Rocket! puzzle title is on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad right now. I've been waiting for this one for a while. I loved the old Dreamcast version, and the remake for the iPhone not only recreates the mouse-redirecting gameplay (you place arrows on a board to guide mice around cats and into their mouseholes), but it adds a few iOS-specific features as well. There are 145 puzzles to play through, and as a special treat, Sega has added a one to four player multiplayer capability via Apple's Game Center; there are achievements to score as well.

The iPhone version is US$4.99, which is less than you'd pay if you found the used Dreamcast version in a store somewhere. The iPad version is $6.99, but it includes a multiplayer mode where up to four players can play on one screen -- it sounds pretty crazy. This one is a classic puzzler that you should definitely check out even if you never played the old game. We're lucky to have it up and running on iOS.

  • MobileMe may be Apple's least "green" product, packaging-wise

When I purchased my MacBook Pro in early 2008, I threw down US$69 for a .Mac (now known as MobileMe) membership. I expected to get an email confirmation of my .Mac order (which I did), followed shortly by another email with an activation code.

Instead, I received the hot mess you see in the pic above (US size 9.5 shoe included for scaling purposes). First, a huge FedEx package, about the same size as the current MacBook's packaging. Rattling around inside of it was a cardboard box with .Mac emblazoned on the front, large enough to fit a CD or DVD inside. But instead of a CD or DVD, I found a small paper booklet with a sticker on the front page containing my activation code. In all, it was about a pound of packaging (at least) for something that really didn't need to be mailed to me at all.

Nearly three years later, the situation hasn't improved. The New York Times notes that MobileMe's packaging needs to go on a diet, and they're absolutely right. Apple's made a big deal in recent years about its push for "greener" practices in both its products and its packaging, and they've made big strides. In 2006, Greenpeace gave Apple very poor ratings for its environmental practices. Greenpeace spent the next few years hounding Apple for its environmental record, until earlier this year when Apple got top ratings. Apple has since slipped to ninth place in the rankings.

  • Found Footage: Reggie Watts and his iPhone rock Sirius XM

Comedian/musician/mad genius Reggie Watts found himself sans equipment (seems to be going around) when he was being interviewed on Sirius XM radio, but that didn't slow him down one bit. He pulled out his iPhone 4, and using a looping app (possibly Everyday Looper, $5.99) he improvised a number that absolutely wowed host Ron Bennington and the rest of the folks in the studio. Be sure to listen for Bennington's final line.

Seeing this, you wonder: are the rest of us really getting the maximum utility out of these ridiculously powerful miniature computers disguised as phones?

  • After iLife '11: Alternatives to iDVD and iWeb

Over the weekend TUAW is going to be featuring in-depth reviews of the new iLife '11 suite -- or at least the three apps that were updated. As most of you know by now, iWeb and iDVD didn't receive an update at all. In light of that, we've compiled a list of several alternatives to iDVD and iWeb that you may want to try out. From a purely consumer standpoint, I don't think any of these apps offer the ease of use that Apple has so successfully built into iWeb and iDVD, but given that iDVD seems all but abandoned -- as should the MacBook optical drive be -- and the future is uncertain for iWeb, it's always nice to know you have some alternatives.

    iDVD alternatives:

    SmallDVD
SmallDVD is a simple utility that lets you take any video files and add them to a DVD image ISO which can then be burned onto a DVD using Disc Utility. SmallDVD doesn't have many features, but it will appeal to those of you who want to create very simple DVDs with static background menus. It also has the added benefit of only creating the ISO file which can then be shared to DropBox or iDisk, and then downloaded and viewed on another computer using only the ISO -- no optical drive needed. SmallDVD is a free download.

  • First Look: Boinx PhotoBox app for iPad

The guys at Boinx Software have done it again, this time with a product for the iPad. PhotoBox, a free app, is the first iPad app for the company, which is primarily known for its Boinx TV and FotoMagico applications for Mac OS X and the You Gotta See This iPhone photo collage app.

What's PhotoBox all about? The idea is that it's an on-site photographer's assistant, allowing you to analyze photos that have been moved to the iPad through the Camera Connection Kit or a wireless connection. The analysis can consist of checking the exposure of a photo against defined limits, allowing digital photographers to make sure that parts of a picture aren't over- or under-exposed. It's also useful for checking out the focus on an image, and can even do video-out to a projector for a much larger view of the image.

Boinx is soliciting feedback as well as ideas for what the app should contain in the future. Boinx wants to turn PhotoBox into a much more complete photographer's tool and then charge for it in the App Store.

As-is, the app has limited functionality. You can add photos to the app's browser from the Photo Library, and then view them in full-screen and 1:1 modes to check overall composition and focus. With the exposure mask tools, underexposed portions of a photo are highlighted in blue, while overexposed bits show up in red. While that's useful for checking exposure in the field, it's not enough to make this an app you'd want to buy.

If you're a professional digital photographer or dedicated amateur, download a copy of PhotoBox and give it a try, and then tell Boinx what you'd like to have added to the app. Several screen shots are available in the gallery below.

  • Trick or Treat with TUAW: Thought Out Stabile iPad stand

TUAW is giving away a gaggle of ghoulishly good gadgets over the next few days. Be sure to come back every day between now and October 30th for a chance to win. The good part of the giveaways? You don't need to wear a costume to win 'em.

According to the Dictionary app on my Mac, stabile is defined as "a freestanding abstract sculpture or structure, typically of wire or sheet metal, in the style of a mobile but rigid and stationary." Stabile is also the name of a rugged and sturdy iPad stand from Thought Out.

Using what looks similar to the base from an iMac attached to a set of padded metal "fingers," the Stabile is perfect for iPad owners who want a way to hold up their devices without wearing out their arms. I can see where the Stabile would be perfect for kiosk applications running on an iPad.

The Stabile comes in two finishes -- black solid steel (US$59.99) and silver solid steel (US$69.99). These things are incredibly well built, weighing in at almost 4 pounds. The base has a set of non-slip rubber pads on it, so it's hard to accidentally move the Stabile when an iPad installed. The center of gravity is low enough that tipping is out of the question as well.

As part of our Trick or Treat with TUAW promotion, we're giving away a pair of Stabiles to some lucky readers. To enter, just let us know what you'd use your Stabile for -- watching movies on your iPad, running a point-of-sale app on the iPad, whatever... Here are the rules:

    • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
    • To enter, leave a comment telling us how you'll use the Thought Out Stabile stand with your iPad.
    • The comment must be left before midnight on Sunday, October 31st, 2010, 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.
    • You may enter only once.
    • Two winners will be selected. One will receive a black solid steel Stabile valued at $59.99, while the other winner will get a silver solid steel Stabile value at $69.99.
    • Click here for complete official rules.

    Good luck!

  • AppleCare has paid for itself

AppleCare boxMy iMac is about three years old. I know this because my AppleCare is expiring on November 7th, and it extends the included one-year warranty by two years to give a total of three years of coverage. In short, I'm glad I've had it and wouldn't consider owning a Mac without it.

In the last three years, I have had a hard drive replaced (December 2008), a logic board replaced (March 2010), and am currently scheduled to have a second hard drive replacement (late October 2010).

I'm not particularly hard on my computers. They've all been plugged into UPS units (I've had good success with APC) and treated well and fairly. Perhaps I'm just unlucky. Whatever the reason, choosing AppleCare is a simple matter of numbers: given the number of Macs that Apple sells, if even a fraction of 1% have issues over the course of three years, that's going to be a significant number.

Others will tell you they've owned several Macs, without AppleCare. This is the same lot who never purchase "extended warranties," which they consider "scams." To them I say that AppleCare is an exception, especially since Macs are increasingly difficult or impossible to get into. Still others will say that Apple ought to include 3 years' worth of protection with every Mac they sell. Perhaps, but the world as it exists is often disappointing compared to the world as we wish it existed.

Read on for some suggestions for getting the most out of AppleCare.

  • Mac 101: Autocomplete words in TextEdit
More Mac 101, our series of tips and tricks for novice Mac users.

For those with modest text-editing needs, Apple's TextEdit is a great choice. Did you know that it's got an autocomplete option? David Mendels points out how it works at Mac OS X Hints.

As you're typing a long word, hit the escape key. A popup window will appear with a list of guesses. Use the arrow keys to find the word you want and hit enter to select. To shorten the list, keep typing. To abandon the list entirely, hit escape again to put it away.

That's a nice little tip! Thanks, David.

  • TSA: 11.6-inch MacBook Air is checkpoint-safe

The US Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, has officially stated that travelers passing through US airport security with the 11.6-inch MacBook Air will not have to remove the little laptop from their bags for inspection. Unfortunately, that's not the case with the 13-inch model.

Size is the differentiating factor. According to the TSA blog, any electronic device considered to be of a "standard laptop" size or larger must go through the x-ray machine solo. Apparently, the cutoff point is at or very near thirteen inches. The iPad, Kindle, Nook and other small devices, including the entry-level MacBook Air, may remain stowed away during screening.

As if travelers needed another reason to lust after the thing.

  • Apple exploring new scratch-proof coating

If a new patent application from Apple is any indication, the company is getting obsessive about making sure that future products are highly scratch-resistant.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published Apple's application this week titled "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products," outlining methods for depositing a very thin layer (just over 15 microns thick) of nitride to stainless steel to provide scratch and impact resistance. Nitride coatings are unique in that they allow the natural feel and look of the stainless steel to show through, while creating a tough scratch-proof surface.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that stainless steel is a highly desirable material for consumer electronics since it is non-magnetic and doesn't hinder Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular signals as much as other metals. However, as some iPhone 4 owners have noticed, the material is relatively easy to scratch.

Apple also entered into an agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies earlier in 2010 to explore using the company's amorphous metal technology in future scratch-proof Apple products. Liquidmetal materials are twice as strong as titanium, but as easy as plastic to process.

  • RealVNC adds "iPod Out" so cars can display iOS device screen data
RealVNC, the company behind the original VNC remote computing protocol, has added iOS to the list of devices that are supported by its VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive. In general, VNC (virtual network computing) allows users to see the display output from another computer over a network. It's commonly used to manage servers that are running without an attached monitor.

While a number of automakers have integrated iPod/iPhone control functionality, many of them have implemented rather clunky user interfaces. VNC Mobile will allow the actual iOS interface, including Cover Flow or even Google Maps, to be displayed directly on the larger in-dash touchscreen in the car. This way, a user could just use the larger display to manage what they are listening to without fumbling with the iPod or iPhone. The new version uses the "iPod Out" feature that Apple has built into the latest versions of iOS to provide this capability. Check out the video in the second half of the post.

Update: The video actually shows the capability of the VNC software to display the output of a smartphone using a Nokia N900. RealVNC is utilizing the newly implemented capabilities in iOs 4.1 to do the same thing.

  • Report: iPad infiltrating enterprise IT

ipad numbersBy now, we all know that the iPad has been a runaway success story, but it seems the iPad is also making waves in the business world, too. According to the Apple Blog, Ted Schadler, from Forrester, has written a report on the impact of the iPad (primarily on the enterprise market, since January 2010). Speaking with more than 200 companies, Schadler's report points out three major ways that the iPad is changing IT in the enterprise.

Firstly, the iPad is reportedly displacing the traditional laptop, especially in the case of those who would use their laptop primarily for email and other types of Web-based communication, though, at this stage, only in scenarios where it is more appropriate.

Secondly, the iPad is replacing paper. Wherever people would usually carry around stacks of paper or files, particularly in medical and pharmaceutical industries, the iPad is now the preferred choice. Clearly, the iPad has more functionality than a wad of paper, and it's a lot easier to carry around, too.

Finally, Schadler says that the iPad is allowing companies to do things more efficiently by providing immediate connection to further resources and data. Schadler uses the example of a salesman being able to customize an order for a customer on the spot by using the iPad.

However, Schadler says there are still some pretty significant hurdles for the iPad to jump through. For one, the iPad has minimal support for Microsoft Office, and the Redmond based company doesn't have any official solutions in the near future to rectify this. This, in part, limits where you can and can't use an iPad in a Microsoft Office dominated enterprise world.

The Apple Blog has further details on Schadler's report here, or if you're a Forrester subscriber, you can read the full story here.

  • Rumor: Apple, Gemalto working on integrated SIM
iphone 4 simGigaOM is reporting on a rumor that Apple has been working with security firm Gemalto, a simcard manufacturer, to create a software-reconfigurable SIM that will be directly integrated into future European iPhones. The iPhone would then be activated on the carrier of your choice by downloading a carrier-specific app from the App Store, instead of the traditional activation methods.

Essentially, Apple wouldn't have to worry about bundling carrier-specific SIMs with the iPhone and end-users would have only virtual contact with the carriers. Something Google tried to do with the Nexus One.

This would make the overall purchase of an iPhone from Apple's Online Store, or Apple's brick-and-mortar stores, a much simpler and smoother process for the end-user -- whilst cutting out the retail aspect that carriers currently hold. Although, I can't imagine carriers not wanting to sell the iPhone directly from their retail stores since the iPhone is such a hot commodity these days.

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out.
