  • Rumor: Apple to release new iMacs on Tuesday, May 3

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple will release new iMac models next Tuesday, May 3. Citing "people familiar with the matter" who have "continually provided accurate information," AppleInsider states that the next iMacs will sport second-generation Intel Core i5/17 chips and a Thunderbolt port. It could not be confirmed at this time if the new iMacs will feature changes to the display sizes.

AI also states that its sources said the early morning hours of May 3 at Apple Retail stores will be a "visual night" which means that the new iMacs should be on sale the day they are announced. "Visual night" is the term when Apple retail employees stay through the night and change merchandising and display planograms in the store in order to prepare a new product for sale. In this case, the older iMacs will be removed and replaced by the newly announced models.

AppleInsider's sources seem to agree with earlier reports from Cnet that new iMacs will ship in April or May. The iMac line was last updated on July 27, 2010.

  • RunKeeper Pro goes free, RunKeeper Free goes bye-bye

A member of the TUAW team recently received an email from RunKeeper saying that RunKeeper Free will no longer be supported. At first glance that might seem like fairly bad news, but it now appears that RunKeeper Pro has been re-branded as just plain "RunKeeper." Contrary to earlier reports that the iOS app would be free only through January, RunKeeper's price has stayed at $0 since December 30.

RunKeeper arrived on the App Store in January 2009 at a price of US$9.99. The app always maintained a great deal of popularity even at its higher-than-average price, mostly because it's packed with well-thought-out features. RunKeeper is a cornerstone of my own fitness regime when I go for my daily bike rides, and between that app and Lose It! I've managed to drop 16 pounds since January. So popular was RunKeeper that it wound up as one of the top-grossing apps of 2010, so it's curious to see the app now permanently fixed at free.

RunKeeper does offer RunKeeper Elite, a subscription-based service to expand the app and website's functionality, so it's possible the developers are counting on bringing in revenue solely through subscriptions from now on. We've reached out to RunKeeper for their comments on the app's current status, but we haven't heard back yet; if RunKeeper does give us additional info, we'll either update this post or write a followup.

Meanwhile, the takeaway from all this is iOS users interested in improving their fitness now have a powerful, free tool at their disposal... and those of you still rocking RunKeeper Free on your iPhones now have no reason not to upgrade.

  • Top 3 iPhone apps: director Axel Braun

This is the latest installment in TUAW's Top 3 Apps; click the link to see other interviews.

I ran into Axel in Las Vegas back in January, as CES and the Adult Entertainment Expo overlap. Yes, Axel is an adult video auteur, but that's not all. The son of Lasse Braun, who helped legalize pornography in Europe, Axel has a Ph.D in psychology and is a member of MENSA.

He's also a big fan of Apple products and was very excited to show off his white iPhone (this video was recorded in January, remember). He installed the white mod himself, which means he's pretty handy with a screwdriver as well.

This video was recorded outside a very loud club (obviously), and the reason Axel forgets Shazam at the end? My iPhone crashed on the first, perfect take. We had to do multiple takes to get his 3 apps recorded, possibly a wider shot-to-screen ratio than some adult videographers are accustomed to.

Video is on the next page.

  • Verizon iPhone untethered jailbreak now available for iOS 4.2.7
    Verizon iPhone untether

While GSM-iPhone owners have had the pleasure of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iOS iteration, 4.3.2, Verizon CDMA-iPhone owners haven't been so lucky -- until now.

Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1, a Windows-only utility brought to you by the folks from iH8sn0w, is now able to install an untethered jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.7. But what about all those Mac-owning Verizon iPhone users who want in on the untethered action?

No problem -- simply jailbreak with redsn0w as per normal, then head to Cydia and install the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 from the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo. Quick, simple and now without the need to connect to your computer to reboot.

  • Amazon offering top-selling MP3 tracks for $0.69

Amazon has dropped the price of its top-selling MP3 tracks to $0.69, according to The Los Angeles Times. That's a 20-cent drop from its previous $0.89 price. The move by the Internet retail giant is seen as an attempt to knock Apple from its perch as the top distributor of music in the world. Currently Apple's iTunes store has a 70% market share, while Amazon is a distant second at 10%.

The LA Times article also highlights some facts about the effect of price changes to music in the iTunes store since last year. In 2010 Apple raised the prices for most new songs in the iTunes store to $1.29, up from $0.99. However, that price increase slowed music sales growth considerably.

In 2009 when the average music track cost $0.99, digital music sales grew 8% in one year. After the raise to $1.29 per track, digital music sales only grew a meager 1% in 2010. Of course, it's not Apple to blame for the price rise, but the music studios who insisted on a higher per-track average price.

It's unclear who is eating the cost of Amazon's price reduction, but an NPD Group analyst questioned whether a $0.69 price for hot songs will actually increase Amazon's market share, or if the price will just create a platform for "opportunistic cherry pickers."

  • ITC judge rules Apple did not violate Elan multitouch patent

Reuters reports that an International Trade Commission judge sided with Apple in a patent fight brought on by Elan Microelectronics Corp. Elan alleged that that Apple had infringed on one of its multitouch patents and used technology from the patent in the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Yesterday the ITC judge ruled in Apple's favor, stating there was no violation of Elan's patent. When the case began Elan had asked the judge to bar all iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches from being sold in the United States. Though this is a win for Apple, the judge's decision will not be final until the full International Trade Commission decides to uphold or reject the decision in August.

  • Apple scraps iOS-like slider tabs in latest Mac OS X Lion build

Hear that? It's a big sigh of relief from Mac users everywhere. In the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Preview Developer Build, Apple has scrapped the switch/slider tabs that were borrowed UI elements from iOS.

As you can see from the image above, Apple has chosen to move away from the Aqua interface of Snow Leopard (and previous versions of OS X) and moved towards a more toned-down appearance. When Lion Developer Preview 2 was released, Apple replaced aqua tabs with slider tabs. For example, in the second tab bar above, when the user clicked on "General" the white tab over "Privacy" would slide over to "General." This UI element can be found in many app settings in iOS (think of the familiar "ON/OFF" switches).

Many developers felt the switch tabs were confusing for users, and it seems that Apple has listened to them. In the third build, Apple has gone back to the depressed tab functionality (the last tab bar in the image above). I guess Apple found out that just because something looks cool and works well in iOS doesn't necessarily mean the UI element should be translated to the desktop.

  • Mac OS X Lion feature 'Reading List' to compete with Instapaper and ReadItLater

MacRumors has discovered a new Safari feature that will compete with Instapaper and ReadItLater in the latest Mac OS X Lion Developer build. The feature, called Reading List, allows users to save web pages for later reading. It's represented in the toolbar by the eyeglasses icon to the right. Currently the feature is inactive, but Apple does offer a description of it:

"Reading List lets you collect webpages and links for you to read later. To add the current page to your Reading List, click Add Page. You can also Shift-click a link to quickly add it to the list. To hide and show Reading List, click the Reading List icon (eyeglasses) in the bookmarks bar."

As MacRumors points out, Apple's implementation looks to be partly based on HTML/js, which off the bat wouldn't allow for synchronization between devices. However, if Apple plans on adding the popular functions of services like Instapaper and ReadItLater into Safari, it's very likely that they will add syncing features as Safari for Mac OS X and iOS are tightly integrated. The image below shows you how items will be displayed in your Reading List.

  • iZettle credit card reader offers social networking, smart card compatibility

A lot of our European readers are disappointed that the iPhone add-on Square credit card reader won't work in their neck of the woods. Square might not, but Europeans will soon be able to accept credit card payments on their iPhones anyway thanks to the iZettle credit card reader.

The device itself works like Square, except you plug it in through the Dock connector and not the headphone jack, and instead of swiping credit cards, you insert them into the iZettle so their chip and pin can be read. For those in the US who might not be familiar with them, chip and pin credit cards, or smart cards, offer increased security over American "swipe" credit cards.

The iZettle also offers social network sharing so customers can post their purchases to Facebook or Twitter if they so choose. No word yet on the rate iZettle will charge per transaction, but the device itself will be free. iZettle will first launch in Sweden with other European countries to follow. You can see a video of iZettle in action on the next page.

  • iPad 2's Japan, India release draws big crowds

Apple's iPad 2 made its official debut in Japan on Thursday along the white iPhone 4. The second generation tablet debuted for 44,800 yen (US$500) and was available from Apple Stores and the wireless carrier Softbank Mobile.

Apple has a good week in the Asian-Pacific region. The iPhone 4 flew off the shelves in China and customers in Japan lined up in droves for the iPad 2. Early adopters in Japan began to line up as early as 9 pm the night before the launch and, sometimes, had to endure heavy rain while they waited. The rain was not a deterrent as the flagship Ginza Apple store in Tokyo; it had a line over three blocks long when the store opened at 9 am.

While customers in Japan were greeted with long lines for the iPad 2, folks at the Andheri Imagine Store in Mumbai, India were greeted with a bouquet of flowers. The retailer went above and beyond to make sure its customer's line-waiting and buying experience were delightful and not drudgery. It likely worked -- who can't help but smile when they are handed a colorful, aromatic bunch of flowers?

  • t Chess Pro updated with dual core support on the iPad 2 and more

I liked t Chess Pro when I reviewed it many month ago. It had good clean graphics, and was a real challenge to play. One of the most frequent requests was for Game Center integration, and that has been added in the most recent release.

Also interesting is the addition of support for the iPad 2 dual-core processors. It's the first use of dual-core support I've seen in an iOS chess program, and it's most welcome. t Chess author Tom Kerrigan told me the engine runs 50-80% faster, and he adds that if there's a good move to be found for the current position, the app will find it much faster.

I hadn't played t Chess for a little while, but this new version did seem snappier on the iPad 2. The Game Center Support is most welcome. t Chess is a universal binary, so it runs on any iOS device, but of course dual-core support is only on the iPad 2.

If you want to get a feel for t Chess, there is a 'lite' version you can try, but without the dual-core feature. t Chess is US $7.99. Given the excellent feature set, and the built-in documentation, I find it well worth it. Buyers should note that t Chess does not auto-detect a dual-core iPad 2. The feature must be enabled in the app settings menu.

My only gripe is that the icon for the app still shows a graphic of a crystalline chess set that is not an option to select for gameplay. The options the app provides are just fine, but I'd sure like to see the nice one illustrated above on the iPad screen.

  • Panasonic app uses AR to place your new big screen dreams

Just in time for the weekend, this is about the wackiest use of augmented reality that we've seen yet. The Panasonic Viera AR Setup Simulator is a brand new free app in the App Store that uses AR to put a virtual big screen television right in your living room, so you can see what it looks like in place before you actually buy and "install" it. The idea is that you download and print the AR market from Panasonic's site, and then install the app, and use your iPhone to "see" the TV in place.

Pretty wild. You can see it in action after the break. Once you see your future television, you can even snap a picture, and send it out via email or a few social networking services. I like the idea of using augmented reality for home improvement a lot -- this is a pretty narrow solution (only really useful if you're buying a specific Panasonic TV), but it's a cool idea. Maybe we'll see more fun uses of AR like this in the future.

Apple has seeded a new build of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to developers today. The build, labeled version number 11A444d, can be downloaded through Software Update for those of you running previous Lion builds. The update weighs in at 1.22 GB.

This is the third release of Lion Developer Preview 2, and as Apple doesn't list any details about the latest fixes and changes incorporated into it, it is likely that there are no major changes since the release of the second build of of Lion Developer Preview 2 two weeks ago. • Apple Store thieves descend from roof in San Francisco

ifoAppleStore.com is reporting that thieves broke into the Chestnut Street Apple Store in San Francisco last night, apparently entering the store through the roof straight into the inventory area in back of the store, and making off with an undisclosed amount of Apple devices. Unfortunately, I can't find any other reports of the crime online, but since it's apparently a recent happening, we'll have to take the blog's word for it.

They also say that the building in San Francisco is surrounded by other buildings of the same height, so it wouldn't have been too hard for thieves to climb over and drop in on the Apple establishment. The police of course have access to a number of video cameras in the area, so hopefully they'll catch these thieves before long.

Unfortunately, Apple Stores, full of expensive merchandise, have seen their share of crime lately. Earlier this month in San Diego, an attempted smash-and-grab robbery turned into a shooting, and we've heard about lots of other robberies at Apple retail stores as well. Fortunately, security is about as good as any other retail establishment, but you'll always have thieves trying to test the limits.

  • IDC claims iPhone marketshare has grown 115%

The International Data Corporation reports that Apple has been taking over the smartphone market in the past few years, with its market share growing by almost 115% over the past year. Apple's still not on top of the list (as there are much more established manufacturers on there, and as we've heard, Apple has some competitors for market share as well), but the company's growth is phenomenal, and has earned it a number four spot on the top five list worldwide, with 5% of the global market.

Even more phenomenal, of course, is the fact that Apple has basically done this with one phone, rather than competitors' multiple lines and flavors of smartphones and operating systems. When the company first started selling smartphones, it said that the goal was to get at least 1% of the global market, so not only has it beaten that goal five times over, but of course it's earned record revenues to match as well.

  • HipstaCase iPhone case perfect for Hipstamatic hipsters

The folks behind the Hipstamatic iPhone app are ready to let you take the old-school camera vibe all the way. They've introduced a Hipstamatic iPhone case called (what else?) the HipstaCase, and while it isn't quite as functional as that concept Leica iPhone case we posted the other day (it's purely cosmetic), it will still give your iPhone the feel of an old camera.

All right, so it's not quite purely cosmetic -- there is a tripod mount that attaches on the bottom, and there's a nylon wrist lanyard as well. But essentially, it's a piece of plastic that makes the back of your iPhone look like one of those cameras you carried around however many years ago. The Hipstacase is available right now for US $39.95.

  • White iPhone shipping times grow in Europe

French Apple Online Store, White iPhone 4 has 5 day shipping timeFrom coming soon, to coming eventually, to arrives tomorrow, to finally here, the white iPhone 4 landed on Thursday with a promising premiere.

Only one day after it became available, wait times for the pale iPhone 4 reached five days in several of Apple's European online stores, including the U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Ireland. Currently, customers in the U.S. and Canada must wait a slightly more modest 3-5 days before their white iPhone 4s board a delivery vehicle. In contrast, the black iPhone 4 ships within a day or two.

The iPhone 4 in white began shipping in 28 countries on April 28, delayed by about 10 months after the popular black version hit the market. The long delay for the alabaster phone, caused by various technical hurdles, created extra "mystique" and perceived "scarcity value" for the device, according to analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities. The appropriately named White expects the new color to incrementally boost iPhone 4 sales by 1 million to 1.5 million units per quarter.

The sellout crowds in Hong Kong and mainland China and expanding shipping times in Europe and North America certainly support the idea that consumers were holding out for their preferred color of iPhone 4. Did you wait patiently for the vanilla-flavored iPhone 4? Let us know why in the comments below.

  • Apple planning huge Brisbane, Australia Apple Store

Apple is set to open its largest Australian Apple store in the historic MacArthur Chambers according to papers filed with Brisbane City Council. While the plans don't mention Apple by name, and in fact were filed on behalf of the MacArthur Central Shopping Centre, the details of the plans all point to an Apple store.

Among the plan highlights that suggest an Apple store are "feature stairs" ala the staircase in the 5th Avenue New York Store and "new colour scheme of shades of white." The plans also mention stone floors, twin glass doors, and a space for what are presumably Genius Bars. The total size of the store would be 1900sqm, making it the largest in Australia.

The MacArthur Chambers building itself has historic connection to World War 2. General Douglas MacArthur commandeered it in 1942 and it was used as an Allied Forces' headquarters until 1944. Apple isn't pushing the history of the building to the wayside either. The plans for the store also include a $3.8 million addendum to remove the "current modern additions" and return the space to its original form. Those plans include getting rid of the tiled ceilings and escalators and restoring the original stone wall panels and bronze doors. There's no word yet on when the store might open.

  • VoxOx releases iPhone app

I wrote about VoxOx earlier this year when I saw the Mac app at CES, and the company has now released an iPhone version that replicates the company's call back service -- they'll connect two different voice lines to each other over your phone. The app can even accept SMS messages, pull off a 20-way conference call, and even take in faxes. There's a video demo of the app online, and it's a free download, though you'll need a VoxOx account to call out.

A few of the reviews on the app say there might be an issue with some incoming calls, but given that it's a brand new release, there may be a few hiccups that need to be fixed in future releases. That said, if you're a user of the VoxOx service, this app is a no-brainer, and even if you're not, but still looking for an all-in-one communication solution, it might be worth a look.

  • Square encryption hinders Visa deal

Square is running into some problems with its new investment partner Visa. An executive at the mobile payments company confirmed it is re-working its system to encrypt credit card data on the fly. Square now uses a dongle that plugs into a headphone jack and an iOS application to process credit card transactions. While this system complies with industry regulations, it does not take the extra step to encrypt the credit card data.

Now that Visa has joined Square as a strategic investor, the mobile payments company will be redesigning all its dongle to include this built-in encryption. Square did not comment on the financial impact of this change, but it could be costly. Square gives away the dongles for free and makes its money off a 2.75% per transaction fee. It is not clear how Square intends to absorb this extra cost.

In light of the recent high-profile security breach of the Sony PlayStation network, Square is wise to add this layer of encryption and ease customers fear of having their transaction data inadvertently compromised.

  • Apple, Google to testify at Congressional hearing on location tracking

Senator Al Franken released a statement today thanking Apple and Google for agreeing to attend a hearing on mobile technology and privacy. According to Franken, the goal of the hearing is to "serve as a first step in investigating if federal law protecting consumer privacy-particularly when it relates to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets-is keeping pace with advances in technology."

The hearing is set for May 10 in Washington, D.C. and has the catchy title "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy." We'll keep you posted on the result of that hearing and we'll reach out to Sen. Franken for comment after they conclude. Full press release below.

Sen. Franken Thanks Google, Apple for Agreeing to Appear at Hearing on Mobile Technology & Privacy
    Thursday, April 28, 2011

Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, thanked Apple and Google for agreeing to send representatives to testify at the May 10th hearing on mobile technology and privacy. They will be joining officials from the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission; Ashkan Soltani, independent privacy researcher and consultant; and Justin Brookman, Director of the Center for Democracy and Technology's Project on Consumer Privacy.

"I'm pleased that Apple and Google have confirmed that they'll be sending representatives to testify at my upcoming hearing on mobile technology and privacy," said Sen. Franken. "This hearing will serve as a first step in investigating if federal law protecting consumer privacy-particularly when it relates to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets-is keeping pace with advances in technology. Each of the witnesses at the hearing will play a critical role in helping us better understand this complex issue and I look forward to hearing from them."

Sen. Franken's hearing, called "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy," is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10th at 10:00 a.m. in 226 Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Protecting Minnesotans' and Americans' consumer rights and privacy has been a priority for Sen. Franken since he came to the Senate. Last week, he sent a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking him to address privacy concerns about the company's iOS 4 operating system, which security researchers have said secretly stores detailed information about users' locations on their iPhones, iPads, and any computers to which the devices are synched, generally in an unencrypted format. Since then, Apple, Inc. has announced that it will update its iOS 4 operating system to address several of the issues raised in Sen. Franken's letter.

Last year, Sen. Franken pressed Attorney General Holder to incorporate an analysis of geotags-information about a person's location that is embedded in photos and videos taken with GPS-equipped smartphones-into an updated stalking victimization study connected to the National Crime Victimization Survey. This March, Sen. Franken also led several of his Senate colleagues in urging Facebook to stop plans that would have permitted third party application providers to access users' home addresses and phone numbers. Earlier this month, he asked the U.S. Department of Justice to clarify its interpretation of a critical federal law that protects personal data after a security breach at Epsilon Data Management and allegations that several popular smartphone applications were gathering and disclosing users' private information without their knowledge or consent.

  • Second source suggests Apple purchased icloud domain

Earlier this week, we reported on a circulating rumor that suggested Apple bought the icloud.com domain name. Today, All Things Digital added to that rumor with a report of its own. According to AllThingsD, "sources in position to know" have confirmed to them that Apple did buy the icloud.com domain name from Xcerion, a cloud computing company based in Sweden.

The original rumor suggested Apple paid up to $4.5 million for the domain name, but AllThingsD was unable to corroborate that figure with its source. Presumably, Apple will use this domain name for the rumored iTunes in the cloud and digital locker service it is supposedly gearing up to launch. Would you be excited to use your iCloud account to sync your iPhoto and iTunes content with your iPad while you're on the iGo?

  • White iPhone reportedly sells out in China

Apple kicked off sales of the white iPhone 4 yesterday and the launch in China was marked by long lines and steady sales. According to interviews from those in line, many Asian consumers passed on the black version of the handset and waited for the white variant to make its debut. Sales were so strong that the white version is reportedly sold out in Beijing, one of China's largest cities. Hong Kong sales were also brisk with reports suggesting the available stock of the white iPhone 4 sold out in one hour.

This demand for the white iPhone 4 was forecast by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities. The analyst predicted sales of the white version would be strong in Asia where white is a desirable color. Besides delivering on a promise to launch the white iPhone 4 this spring, the launch of the white model will also keep Apple iPhone sales strong in the current quarter. Last quarter, Apple sold over 18 million iPhones globally.

  • Declaring love with the Mac OS X Finder

Not only is this really cute, it made me think to myself, "Man, I wish I'd thought of that first." Sean Ohlenkamp put a folder on the desktop of his wife's Mac as the gateway to expressing his sentiments on their third wedding anniversary. The video above walks through a whimsical nest of folders in the Mac OS X Finder, occasionally taking non sequitur (and hilarious) side trips before winding up at an awww-inducing conclusion. There's no indication of how Sean's wife reacted to his message or the way he delivered it, but if she's a keeper, I'm sure she loved it.

You can watch the video after the break.

  • TUAW's Daily iOS App: Unpleasant Horse

Unpleasant Horse is the first iOS game put together by a division of the developer PopCap Games, the folks behind hits like Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies. The app was originally rejected due to some violent content, but it's back on the App Store, rated appropriately and ready for a free download right now.

The game was put together in a 24-hour game jam session, and as much as it pains me to say this about a game essentially put together by PopCap developers, this rushed development schedule shows in Unpleasant Horse. You play a horse jumping through the clouds with a few wrinkles in gameplay, like "pleasant horses" that you need to drag down as far as possible to earn points, or birds that give you an extra mid-air jump. It's all pretty straightforward -- you jump from cloud to cloud for as long as you can. I'd like to say the game feels like Tiny Wings, but it's not quite that elegant, despite some colorful art. There are no real extras either, with no other game modes and no Game Center integration.

Still, PopCap started 4th & Battery because it wanted to experiment with some edgier ideas, and since the game is being given away as a universal version for free, I can't really complain too much. Here's hoping PopCap finds what it set out to find with 4th & Battery, and then gets back to making the well-crafted games that it's known for.

  • Making your own iPad magazine

A lot of publications are adding iPads and other portable devices to their distribution chains. As a result, we're beginning to see some solutions for small- and medium-sized companies that are starting to approach the idea of offering a self-publishing solution. You can always send people a PDF, but that's really not a magazine, and it won't show up in the App Store.

One interesting product is from some former Apple employees who have started MagAppZine. You submit a PDF, and the company quickly converts it to a magazine and submits it to the App Store for you. You can see some customer examples in the App Store here. Using MagAppZine is not inexpensive, but it's far cheaper than hiring a programmer and managing an App Store submission. Costs are about US$3000 for a magazine, plus charges each time you add a new issue. You get to keep 75% of the revenue if your magazine is a paid creation, MagAppZine gets 25%. That's after the Apple's 30% cut. Naturally, MagAppZine can't guarantee that your app won't get rejected from the App Store, so customers need to understand Apple's rules on content.

  • Apple files patent application for Fitness Center App for iPhone

[Headline and post revised to clarify that this is a patent application, not a patent award. Our apologies for the error. -Ed.]

Patently Apple's got another USPTO-sponsored bulletin from the R&D Department in Cupertino, and this time it's for a brand new app designed to help you stay in touch with your local gym. A recently published patent application details a Fitness Center App that will do things like track your workouts from exercise machines, mark down when and where you visit the gym, and even find a workout partner with social networking or set up appointments for personal trainers straight from the app. [Maybe they'll call it "QuadsSquare." -Ed.]

In short, Apple's idea is that one app would govern all facets of an exercise program, with a heavy back-end system to work with different gyms all over the country. You'd be able to get news and information straight from your local gym, as well as custom reminders when you miss a workout or haven't been in a while.

It all sounds good to us. While most of Apple's patents are usually just the company covering its bases, this one seems awfully in-depth -- everything from concepts to layouts is covered here. That doesn't mean this idea is any more likely to actually be implemented, but it does mean that Apple has put lots of thought and effort into an app like this. Maybe we will see it implemented as an actual release.
