  • iFixIt releases transparent iPhone 4 rear panel

If you like to see the innards of your handset, then you have to check out this latest offering from iFixit. The repair company known for its detailed teardown analyses has released a transparent rear panel for the GSM/AT&T iPhone 4. Unfortunately, the Verizon iPhone 4 has a slightly different shape and these panels will not fit the Verizon model.

The clear panel lets you peer into the logic board and gawk at the large battery that dominates the back of the handset. Functional as well as eye-catching, the see-through backing adds some durability to your handset. It is made of plastic and is less prone to breaking than the original glass panel.

Thanks to iFixit's step-by-step guide, swapping out the back panel is drop dead easy. You just loosen some screws, slide the old cover off and slide the new one on. The transparent panels are available now for ordering and will set you back $30 plus taxes, shipping and handling. Anyone going to drop three sawbucks and scoop one up?

  • Nielsen says Android is "most desired smartphone"

Nielsen released its early 2011 survey numbers and the results suggest Android popularity is on the rise and iOS is declining in the US. In this latest consumer survey, Android edges out the iPhone as the most desired smartphone platform.

When asking respondents about the next handset they intend to buy, 31.1% said they would purchase an Android device, while 30% said they wanted an iPhone. This is a 5.6 percentage point increase for Android which climbed from 25.5% and a 2.7 percentage point decline for iOS which was previously at 32.7%. This earlier survey was taken between July 2010 to September 2010.

Interestingly enough, this decline in iOS occurred even though Apple expanded its presence in the US by launching the Verizon iPhone. This early result suggests the expansion of the iPhone to another carrier did little to combat the popularity of Android and stem its tidal wave of devices, many of which are 4G and powered by dual-core processors.

So what do you think, are consumers really giving up the polished operating system and robust app store of iOS just for some horsepower? Will there be some buyer's remorse when the iPhone 5 arrives later this year?

  • How to: Capturing iPad video with audio narration

Recently, Mike Rose asked me to check out an ongoing discussion over at the Telestream forums to see if I could assist one of the posters. Mike knew that Steve Sande and I were working on testing out a variety of iPad-to-computer screen capture solutions. He thought I might be able to help out Dr. J, host of the "Lighting the Lamp" podcast.

  • Evernote for Mac 2.1 update boasts social sharing, audio, speed

Users of the popular Evernote app for Mac are going to love the new 2.1 update released today. To start with, the new app has greatly sped up searching your documents. As Evernote mentioned, it's not uncommon for a user to now have several thousand notes, and the search times with Evernote for Mac were quite slow. Search speeds have been dramatically improved, so you can keep taking notes without worrying about waiting forever for search results.

Next, Evernote now has the ability to share individual notes through Facebook, Twitter, email and any other way you can think of. There's now a Share button in the menu bar of the Mac app. You just need to select the note you want to share, click the Share button, then select the way you want to share the information.

There's also a new way to record a meeting and write notes about it at the same time, all archived for posterity in Evernote. To record an audio note, you just click on the microphone icon and start recording by clicking the Record button. When you're done recording the audio, you can add text or files, then share it with others. The length of recordings depends on whether you're a free or premium user -- free users can do a single audio note with a maximum size of 25 MB, while premium users get 50 MB (about 4 hours) per note.

The update is available from Evernote, or you can select the "Check for Updates" link in the Mac app to receive your update. If you've installed the app through the Mac App Store, Evernote assures us that the update will be available "very soon."

  • iPad as concert camera is kind of crazy

Concert shots from a mobile device are enjoyable to take and so much fun to look at when the event is over. Those grainy pictures seem to capture the excitement of the moment and you can't help but look cool when thrusting your mobile device in the air to snag an impromptu shot. That is unless your mobile device is an iPad2.

Check out the following video spotted by Gizmodo and watch in shocked bemusement at the single person holding up an iPad 2 to take a picture of Kanye West in concert (at 00:24). Looking more like a luncheon tray whose reflective properties could blind the performer on stage, the brave soul holds his or her iPad 2 into the air subjecting it to all sorts of peril. One simple bump and the iPad could go crashing to the floor where it would be trampled by the dancing throng.

Not to mention that waving an iPad 2 in the air is just asking for someone to steal this highly desirable and hard to find device. It also makes you wonder where the person is storing the iPad 2 when they are not taking pictures? In a front pack, back pack or an iPad-sized fanny pack?

Read on for the video and feel free to comment on this highly unusual usage of an iPad 2.

  • White model to boost iPhone sales in upcoming quarter

Multiple rumors suggest Apple is gearing up to finally launch the white iPhone 4 later this week. While many are weary of these constant rumors, Ticonderoga securities analyst Brian White believes Apple fans and stockholders should be happy the handset may be ready for its long-awaited debut.

According to White "the white iPhone does matter" to Apple's earning potential in the upcoming quarter. White believes Apple will delay the launch of the iPhone 5 until September and the arrival of the white iPhone 4 will bridge the gap between the launches of the original iPhone 4, the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5.

Apple will see an incremental boost in sales as the white model has a certain "mystique" about it that will prompt some buyers to make the jump and scoop up an iPhone 4. The demand for white devices in China is also high and White predicts the blanc version of the iPhone will be especially hot in this Asian country. China is a growing market for Apple devices and White notes that China accounted for 10% of Apple's total revenue over the past six months.

  • Install and run iPad apps on an iPhone easily with iTelePad2Pod

    iTelePad2Pod

OK, so this comes straight out of the why would you want to do this category, but thanks to the iSmooth Project folks from iJailbreakNow, installing and running iPad-only apps is now possible for the less tech-savvy on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.

The process involves using an app called iTelePad2Pod on your Mac to alter the supported devices metadata of your target iPad app. The modified app is then sent to your iPhone or iPod touch using FTP across OpenSSH (which must be installed on your jailbroken device). It's a fairly straightforward procedure and results in some relatively usable apps. This isn't the first time an iPad app has been installed on an iPhone, the once iPad-only Netflix app had that pleasure courtesy of some clever hackery.

These apps are designed for the larger display of the iPad and users may encounter a problem when a button or dialog breaches the bounds of the iPhone's resolution (960x640 for the iPhone 4). If there's an app that's only available for the iPad and you haven't jumped on the tablet bandwagon yet, you now have a relatively user-friendly option. Read on for a video guide.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Super Stickman Golf

Super Stickman Golf is a golf game, and a pretty good one at that. But it's not like any golf game you've ever played before. For one thing, it's played in 2D. Like Worms, you line up a shot, hit an energy meter right where you want it to go, then send your ball across a variety of 2D stages. But this is a wacky game of golf -- some of the stages have floating islands and other obstacles in them, and some of your shots can either get hit or roll off at weird angles.

Fortunately, you have some help in the form of ball power-ups, so your golf balls can stick to the walls, freeze in midair or otherwise careen around the stages. It's a lot of fun; it's still golf, but it's more of a wacky arcade sport than the "good walk ruined."

The presentation is great, with solid controls and good music to back up the proceedings. There's an amazing amount of content, with six clubs, over 250 holes to play, multiplayer and Game Center leaderboards and more content on the way. At just US$0.99 during a current sale, Super Stickman Golf is a bargain. If you're still not sold, there's a free version to check out as well.

  • Facebook's iOS app starts polluting News Feed with 'People you may know'

The folks at App Advice contacted us about something I just noticed myself this morning: Facebook's iOS app is rolling out a "People you may know" feature identical to what's on the social network's full site.

This new Facebook feature has instantly got me and many other users annoyed at the app, particularly after the recent "#dickbar" debacle which convinced me to permanently abandon the official Twitter client for a third-party app. Some people may welcome this feature, but part of the reason I like Facebook's iPhone app more than the actual site itself is that a lot of the useless cruft that pollutes Facebook is stripped away in its app. I don't get deluged with ads or those annoying little app requests that people like to send out en masse; instead, all I'm presented with is all I actually want, the News Feed, photos and my friends list.

Much like the official Twitter app's (now mercifully removed) QuickBar, this "People you may know" feature is something completely irrelevant to my interests (absolutely everyone ever suggested by this feature has been someone I do not actually know). Like Twitter's QuickBar, I know I'll never use this feature, but it's also something that, for now, I'm unable to get rid of. I seriously hope the Facebook team has learned from the backlash over Twitter's QuickBar and isn't planning on making "People you may know" a permanent feature that users aren't allowed to disable. Otherwise, at least there are always third-party options to tide me over until they come to their senses.

  • App Review: Tikal offers jungle brilliance for 10 action points a turn

    tikal ipad game

Every six months or so, Codito/Sage Board Games releases another excellent Euro-style board game for iOS. The first example was the excellent Medici, which was followed by Ra. Coming up next is Puerto Rico. Last week they brought us Tikal, a truly wonderful game that won the 1999 Spiel des Jahres award and still stands up to any of the releases coming out today (last year, it even got a sequel, which is just fascinating). While the game is amazing, the Tikal app feels like a 0.9 version, but the crashes and quirks should be worked out quickly if Sage's history tells us anything.

Tikal the board game is about exploring the jungle around Tikal, the archaeological site, for ancient Mayan temples and treasures. It may be troubling if you think about it in terms of colonizer and indigenous peoples, but sometimes you need to just enjoy brilliant gameplay when you find it. Read on to see how it all works.

  • iTunes versions older than 10.0 now incompatible with iTunes Store

A 9to5Mac tipster has discovered that Apple is apparently not officially supporting the iTunes Store for older G3 iMacs and any Macs that need to run older versions of iTunes. This isn't really surprising; if Apple won't support software for those older computers, it's unlikely that the company would bother to make sure its store was compatible with them. But what's interesting here is that it's only the store that's incompatible. As you can see from the screenshot above, the rest of the old iTunes 8.2.1 works as expected.

It seems like Apple just created a new page for the latest version of the iTunes Store and redirected older versions to this one, asking customers to install iTunes 10. You'd think the company would want to at least let customers using older Macs spend their money buying iTunes audio and video, but apparently any potential sales from the older versions are outweighed by the costs of keeping the old site around.

  • Star Wars Stormtroopers use Mac System 6

The evil Galactic Empire is well-known for cutting corners in its engineering, with gaping chasms scattered seemingly at random throughout the Death Star without a single guardrail in sight. It turns out the Empire's computer systems are also woefully out of date; as designer Matt Chase demonstrates, it seems Imperial Stormtroopers, like TK-421, are still using System 6 on their Macs.

From the contents of TK-421's email inbox, it appears a Stormtrooper's work is never done. Not only is there some mandatory target practice scheduled, Darth Vader keeps sending increasingly frantic messages concerning a pair of missing droids. The final email, pictured above, is a rather ominous message from rebels@rebelalliance.org threatening to blow up the Death Star. Not to worry, TK-421; any attack against the station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained.

Check out the full graphic of this decidedly old-school Mac desktop here. Note that one or two items in the graphic may be NSFW depending on your locale, especially if your boss is anything like Darth Vader.

  • BananaTunes beta streams beautiful music from iOS to your Mac

One of the great things about being a buddy of Erica Sadun is that sooner or later, she surprises you with an amazing app. [Ed: This is also known as "assault by beta testing" under Utah's penal code.] Her BananaTunes beta evolves iOS-to-Mac video app BananaTV to the next logical step -- it transmits full stereo music from your iOS device to your Mac.

Built around the recent AirPlay reverse engineering, Sadun promises that this capability will eventually be factored back into BananaTV, her iOS-to-Mac video app. For now BananaTunes allows you to bring your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to the office or a friend's house and use its built-in iPod app AirPlay functionality to stream music to a Mac running this software.

BananaTunes is currently available as a limited-time beta app so that Erica can work out bugs as time permits. It requires Mac OS X 10.6 and 64-bit, so be sure that you know what you're running before you try out the Mac app.

When BananaTunes becomes part of BananaTV, users will need to bring their own key.pem file for authentication. Want to give it a spin? Either download these two zip files off of Erica's site and follow the instructions, or use this all-in-one installer package. Word of mouth is that the installer package works great, but our standard TUAW paranoia mandates that we warn you that we've been unable to authenticate its contents. (In other words, use at your own risk, but it's probably just fine.)

In my limited beta testing today, I found that BananaTunes worked very well with my iPad 2. Tunes beamed from my iPhone 4 experienced some garbling. This could be due to network traffic, so be aware that your mileage may vary. Then again, it was a 1950s Dean Martin recording, so he may have been gargling Scotch while crooning the tune I was listening to.

In the end, BananaTunes is a fun Mac app for when you want to control your music world from your iPad.

  • Rumor: Next MacBook Pro to sport completely redesigned case

Get ready to say goodbye to the current form factor of the MacBook Pro family. MacRumors is reporting that the next MacBook Pros will sport an entirely redesigned case. A redesign next year isn't such a surprise, as Apple does tend to redesign its laptops about every three years. However, the next MacBook Pro design, according to the rumors, could be the most significant to the line in years.

In February before the latest MacBook Pros were unveiled, iLounge stated that the 2011 MBPs would be the last to sport the current form factor and that next year's MBPs were already under development at Quanta in Taiwan. The next MacBook Pros are reportedly a big "milestone" release for the Pro family. There are no hard details yet on what the redesign will include, but given the popularity of the MacBook Air, it's not a stretch to assume that Apple is going to eliminate the optical drive in hopes of making the MacBook Pro family as thin and light as possible.

  • Looking for Easter eggs in iOS and its apps

We're one day late on this one, but rather than brightly colored hidden eggs for Easter, in this case we're of course referring to "easter eggs," little secrets that programmers hide in their applications and code. Macworld has a great roundup of four easter eggs hidden in popular App Store apps, from a secret edition of the 1926 Kelly Blue Book in the official Kelly app to the funny result you get when searching for "tilt" in Mobile Safari.

Off the top of my head, the only other app easter egg I know of is the fact that you can play with the various characters wandering around the title screen of Halfbrick's Monster Dash. Yelp's Monocle AR service was originally an easter egg, although it is now part of the full app.

And it's not technically an easter egg, but some people may not know that you can access iTunes controls either by double clicking the home button while your iPhone is locked, or by double clicking it while unlocked to bring up the background app icons, and then swiping those to the right.

Any other hidden iOS features or app easter eggs that you know about? Share with the rest of us in the comments below!

  • Concept case would turn your iPhone into a Leica

OK, so yes, this Leica i9 case for the iPhone 4 is still just a concept. You can't actually buy a case yet that fits around your iPhone and turns it into a Leica camera (though you can buy some nice lenses or an audio tape case). But this idea is just too cool to pass up. Outside of the standard retro charm of having a Leica attached to the back of your iPhone, the idea here is that you can use the iPhone's dock port to attach a high-quality premium camera to the back of your high-quality premium smartphone, enabling some really excellent mobile photography.

There's probably some technical magic that has to be worked here as well -- I don't know how feasible it is to have the dock hook up to and even control a high quality camera lens like this, especially with that design and size. But heck, if we can get the iCade made into a real product, this is certainly possible, right?

  • Amazon Germany lists Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on DVD

A blog called Apple Bitch points to an Amazon Germany listing of Mac OS X 10.7, which says the Lion OS will ship on a DVD format. This hints that the update may actually be available as a more traditional DVD purchase, instead of the all-digital Mac App Store download that the preview was released as. Then again, this could just be a default listing for the software, which is set to become available later this year. The US Amazon listing doesn't mention a DVD format at all, instead promising that the page will sell Lion if and when it becomes available in the store.

Though the Mac App Store is clearly the future for Apple's distribution of its software, if Lion were only a MAS download, Apple would be excluding many Macs that could run it. Why? Lion is set to require an Intel Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor or higher. There are many Macs which match those specs that are still running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Since the Mac App Store requires 10.6.6 or higher, having Lion as MAS download only would eliminate a lot people from upgrading to Lion, even though their machines would be more than capable of running it. So those of you who have never updated to Snow Leopard on your Core 2 Duo Macs need not worry, you'll still be able to upgrade to Lion the old fashioned way. However, you'll want to make sure you do, as I'm willing to bet Lion will be the last OS available on optical media.

  • Comparing Apple and RIM smartphone numbers for the past year

There's been a lot of back and forth lately about Apple and RIM and their smartphone sales -- of course, with the iPhone, Apple has laid claim on the "new and shiny" market. But RIM continues to be huge, with lots of users still stuck on the BlackBerry and its various services. Jim Dalrymple at the Loop decided to break down the numbers and see who's really selling more devices.

So what's the truth? All told, it's Apple. RIM has shipped 52.4 million devices in the last year, which is nothing to sniff at, and definitely in opposition to anyone claiming the company is washed up. But Apple edges RIM out, shipping 57.39 million iPhones. For all four quarters of the past year, save for the period between last May and June, Apple has shipped more smartphones than RIM.

Keep in mind, however, that these numbers, at least on RIM's side, are for shipped devices, not devices sold. Apple has announced that it sold 18.5 million iPhones in just the first quarter of this year, and it's likely that RIM lags behind that number a bit. Apple's pulling ahead, but there's still some competition in the smartphone market among these two.

  • Apple slapped with federal lawsuit over location tracking

Well, you knew this was coming. After all, suing Apple has become something of a favorite past time for individuals and companies. Bloomberg reports that two iPhone users have filed a federal lawsuit against Apple alleging invasion of privacy and computer fraud regarding the iPhone's ability to track and store cell phone tower data.

Right now details are sparse, there's no word what kind of damages the plaintiffs are seeking, and Apple has not issued a statement on the lawsuit. However, with more and more "Locationgate" stories hitting the news daily, you can expect that Apple is working on, if not a solution, at least a response to the matter.

UPDATE: Bloomberg has expanded its article, quoting an attorney for the plaintiffs as saying, "We take issue specifically with the notion that Apple is now basically tracking people everywhere they go. If you are a federal marshal you have to have a warrant to do this kind of thing, and Apple is doing it without one." The plaintiffs (an iPad and iPhone user) are asking a judge to bar Apple from recording location data and a refund for their devices, saying they would not have purchased them if they had known about the location tracking in iOS.

  • Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen: Steve Jobs is "monomaniacal"

I doubt Steve Jobs will regard being called monomaniacal as an insult. My dictionary defines the word as 'An inordinate or obsessive zeal or interest in a single thing or subject." That sounds pretty much like the Apple co-founder and CEO.

The comments from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen came in an interview with The Sunday Times, where he also praised Apple's almost unbelievable turnaround since Jobs returned to the company in 1997. The full article is behind a paywall, but the Guardian quotes it here.

There's a lot more of interest in Allen's recently-published autobiography, Idea Man. One passage from the book that will make Apple fans take notice is this one quoting Bill Gates in the mid-nineties:

"[The competition] can be taken. But the only way we're going to take them is to study them, know what they know, do what they do, watch them, watch them, watch them. Look for every angle, stay on their shoulders, clone them, take every one of their good ideas and make it one of our good ideas."

  • Fail: Video of 'Steve Jobs' rehearsing iPhone 5 introduction

Some people don't even try anymore. There's a video circulating on many Asian tech sites (and now some English ones) that is purportedly Steve Jobs rehearsing the keynote speech for the introduction of the iPhone 5.

According to the fake video, the next iPhone 5 will feature digital scent technology and a battery that doesn't need to be recharged. It's not those wild claims that make this video obviously fake, it's that the man who is supposed to be Steve Jobs doesn't sound anything remotely like him. But the absolute best part of the video has to be when Steve Jobs stops to change his shoes. Total fail people.

  • No comment: Steve Jobs in Carbonite

Did you ever wonder what happens when the reality distortion field meets Star Wars?

You get these cool/cheesy/ready-for-cease-and-desist Steve Jobs in Carbonite iPhone skins and cases from Society6. Until the Apple lawyers get ahold of this and breathily note "I am altering our agreement. Pray I don't alter it further," you can order an iPhone skin for just US$15, a stretched canvas art print (which is apparently free if you believe the pricing on the site), or a full iPhone case for $35.

Act now and get one of these collectibles before the lawyers strike back! And remember, when you tell Steve that you love him, he's only going to reply "I know."

  • South Park introduces the HUMANCENTiPad

South Park is starting its 15th season on Wednesday, and Apple will be there. Comedy Central has posted a very short clip of Steve Jobs presenting the newest iThingy, which seems to be a mash-up of an iPad and The Human Centipede. The latter is a movie so bad that it garnered a Rotten Tomatoes audience rating of 29 percent. The clip is slightly NSFW (Not Suitable For Work), so be forewarned.

  • Michael Dell: Android tablets will overtake iPad

Android logo swallowing Apple logoMichael Dell is bullish on Android tablets [registration required]. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published today, the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Dell Inc. predicted Android tablets would one day overtake Apple's iPad as the leading platform in the tablet market. Dell cited Android's success in the smartphone market to support his theory.

"If you look at 18 months ago, Android phones were like, 'What is that?' And now there are more Android phones than iPhones," Dell said. "I don't see any reason why the same won't occur with Android tablets."

At the moment, Android faces the Herculean task of catching up to the device that defined a new class of consumer electronic. Unlike the iPhone, which entered an already healthy mobile phone marketplace with well-established rivals, the iPad set the benchmark for tablet computing. A recent report from IDC suggests the iPad represents 83 percent of the rapidly growing tablet market. IDC expects Apple to continue its dominance by winning up to 80 percent of tablet sales in 2011.

The iPad's most well-reviewed rival, the Motorola Xoom, has done little to sink Apple's staggering dominance despite its flashy marketing campaign and tablet-specific flavor of Android. One estimate from Deutsche Bank suggests Motorola has sold only 100,000 units of its flagship tablet. Similarly, Samsung has been disappointed with sales of its Galaxy Tab and its sales of about 2 million units.

Dell, of course, offers its own family of tablets called the Streak. The 5- and 7-inch tablets, powered by Android, were met with generally negative reviews and are widely considered flops. Dell is expected to release its 10-inch Streak Pro, in both Windows and Android varieties, later this year. Although Dell claims to be doubling down on Android, the CEO, who also expressed being surprised by the sudden rise of the iPad, may also be hedging his bets by releasing tablets on two competing software platforms.

  • The Civil War Today: An elegant interactive trip into American history via iPad

I find the Civil War to be one of the most fascinating periods of American history. The struggle that tore our nation apart 150 years ago occurred during a time of great social upheaval, continued westward expansion and technological changes that shaped the next century.

When I saw that HISTORY had released The Civil War Today for iPad (US$7.99), I glanced at a description of the app and then bought it immediately. What I've been enjoying since April 12, 2011 is a well-designed interactive daily trip into the events that happened exactly 150 years ago. It's as if my iPad has become a time machine taking me back into the past, and as the war heats up and comes to its inevitable conclusion over the next four years, I'll be experiencing the battles, the tragedies and the personal stories of the people who lived through the Civil War.

Read more to see my review of The Civil War Today, and be sure to check out the gallery below.

  • Cydia back up after multi-day outage

Good news for the jailbreak community as Cydia is now back up and running. Along with many other companies, the alternative app store for iOS devices has been down for several days due to Amazon's highly-publicized E2C Cloudfront server outage.

During this downtime, Cydia suspended all downloads, purchases and updates. Users of the jailbreak app store were greeted with a notice that all activities were down. The app repository came back to life last night, and everything is back to business as usual. Woohoo!

  • Apple abandons effort to secure "POD" trademark

Apple has apparently decided to abandon its trademark application for the term "POD." Apple filed for the trademark in Canada on July 2004. After a series of changes required by the Canadian government and extensions that span seven years, Apple has decided to abandon the patent. The abandonment procedure began on December 2010 and was finalized on April 13, 2011.

The term "iPOD" is still covered by an Apple trademark, but the word "POD" is now up for grabs. Look for the next ePOD eReader or aPOD mp3 player to hit the market in the coming months.

  • iPad survives 500 foot fall from airplane thanks to G-Form Extreme Sleeve

Companies like G-Form enjoy wowing people with products that protect your device under the most extreme conditions. This time around, the team took an iPad, slipped it into their Extreme Sleeve and dropped it from an ultralight airplane.

Similar to the iPhone that plummeted from a plane, the iPad fell over 500 feet, flipping through the air and landing with a resounding thud in a grassy field. After retrieval, the iPad emerged from the sleeve fully functional with nary a scratch. The helmet cam attached to the outside the Extreme Sleeve did not fare so well and, unfortunately, broke on impact.

Unlike the Otter Box, which is a rigid and bulky case, the G-Form Extreme Sleeve uses PORON XRD, a flexible and thin material known for its ability to absorb impacts. The sleeve is lightweight and flexible, yet protects your iPad 1 and iPad 2 from harsh falls and impacts. The Extreme Sleeve comes with a life-time guarantee and is available in black and yellow. Folks can pre-order one now for US$59.95, and they will begin shipping on May 2.

Read on to watch the falling iPad and the reactions of the enthusiastic team at G-Form.

  • A roundup of today's "Locationgate" news

Last week's news that relatively imprecise cell phone tower location data from iPhones is stored in a file that is backed up onto your computer seems to be gathering a lot of attention. It was even the main topic of discussion on last night's TUAW Talkcast.

"Locationgate" began when two researchers released a Mac app (iPhone Tracker) that not only finds the file on your computer, but also displays that information. The iPhone Tracker plot of my location information (seen above) shows that I seem to spend a lot of time in the Denver area. That's not surprising, since that's where I live.

Bloomberg reported that the South Korean government has contacted Apple for information about location information collection. In South Korea, the collection of GPS coordinates violates privacy laws, so the government wants to know how the information is stored and whether users can choose to turn off the storage of location data. The Korea Communications Commission also wants to know why Apple captures the information and if it is stored on the company's servers.

South Korea isn't the only country in which privacy advocates are up in arms -- French, American, German and Italian regulators also want to know why Apple collects the information. Razorian Fly notes that Apple has already explained why it collects and store this data in a letter to the US Congress last year. Basically, it's done so Apple has its own location services and is not dependent on Google or Skyhook for that information. It's this location data that your iPhone queries when it initially tries to figure out where it is, before the device locks onto the GPS satellite constellation.

  • Blurrycam Theatre Presents: The classically fake iPod classic

We get purported product leak pics sent to us all the time, and of course, the vast majority of them are fake. In an era when anyone with free time and a copy of Photoshop can slap together something that's convincing at first glance, we're sort of jaded when we look at these Blurrycam photos. In fact, even Gizmodo's epic iPhone 4 leak last year had me and half my TUAW colleagues saying, "Fake, fake, fakedy faaaaaake," right up until Apple demanded the device be returned.

It's only the truly spectacular pics that warrant us firing up our CSI rigs (Zoom. Enhance. Zoom. Enhance) in an attempt to prove if the pic's been faked or not. Then, at the other end of the spectrum, there's the monstrosity pictured here, which sent the entire TUAW team into paroxysms of laughter when we saw it.

A reader sent us this image after a friendly email where he said he had a line on the next iPod classic. "Contrary to what some people believe there will be a new one," he said. "It will have an option for either a 256GB or 320GB hard drive. It will feature the interface of the iPod Nano all while keeping the clickwheel. Also, the screen size will increase by nearly eliminating the bezel. This device is catered to serious music lovers who still love keeping with the times."

Sounded reasonable to us, so we requested pics. And the iPod wasn't the only thing about this that was classic. "Worst. Photoshop. EVER," one member of our team replied, and we didn't even have to Zoom or Enhance to make that call. Check out some detail on the full-sized image, as it was sent to us:

    All too easy.

I'll forgive the pic's blurriness, especially since the metadata (which our tipster forgot to scrub out) says the original pic was taken with an iPod touch. I'll also forgive our photo prankster for neglecting to strip out the Adobe Photoshop CS3 markers from the metadata (P.S. to the sender: your GPS data is still embedded in the image you sent us, too. Nice house!). The pic's onscreen icons are crooked with respect to the device itself, but I'll even give that a pass. It's that corner detail in the pic above, where the layered-on image from an iPod nano screen extends beyond the iPod classic in the background layer, that elevates this from your everyday Blurrycam photo to the high art of the Fakes Hall of Fame.

  • Barack Obama and the iPad-in-Chief

US President Barack Obama has been well-known for his love of RIM's BlackBerry, at least until last year when he admitted that the device is now "no fun" because of the security strictures he faces as Commander-in-Chief. The President has also said that technology in the White House is "30 years behind," with a lack of "really cool phones and stuff." The President recently admitted he got an iPad, but until a recent photo, it wasn't clear whether he got the old model or the new iPad 2. Consider this mystery solved, because based on this photo of him boarding Marine One it's clear the President is toting around a brand-new iPad 2, complete with a Smart Cover.

    The iPad-in-Chief

We're still not sure what the President uses his iPad for, though it's funny to picture the world's most powerful politician playing Angry Birds on Air Force One while the "football" sits nearby. It seems Apple's device has been cleared by White House security, which typically is not an easy feat -- the President reportedly had trouble getting clearance for his BlackBerry. If you work for a company whose IT department has been reticent about letting the iPad in, you've now got some potent ammunition for your counterargument.

    Thanks for the tip, Alex!

  • HazeOver dims background windows to help you focus

    HazeOver

Have you ever wished that you could fade out non-active windows in the background, leaving you to focus on the task at hand? HazeOver does just that in a simple and Mac-like fashion.

A small utility that runs in the background, HazeOver dims any non-active windows automatically in a smooth ramp down to darkness. The amount of dimming is adjustable, from 10 to 80 percent, with an option to have a menu bar icon for quick access to settings. When you switch to a new window it is instantly thrust into the light, but when you switch away from it, HazeOver will fade it out smoothly into the background darkness.

It's a really nice little utility that creates a very Mac-like effect and helps you focus on one window at a time. For US$0.99, HazeOver is worth a buck to add a little spice to your desktop and help you focus in on the task at hand. Hit the break to see HazeOver in action.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Starfront Collision

Gameloft has earned a reputation for, ahem, "borrowing" some game ideas for the App Store. A lot of the company's (very popular) games are more or less copies of popular titles on other platforms. One of Gameloft's latest games, Starfront Collision, is no different; it's basically a clone of StarCraft.

But here's the thing: Who cares? Blizzard hasn't actually put out a version of StarCraft for iOS, and to be honest, the RTS options are pretty limited. So if Gameloft wants to "borrow" the genre and even some of its various factions and units, that doesn't bother us one bit.

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite have the polish of StarCraft (what does?), but it's a working RTS, built from the ground up for the iPhone. While it would be nice to see some official Blizzard games on iOS, we don't have those yet. In the meantime, fans of the genre and Blizzard's classic can check out Starfront Collision, either as a free version with in-app purchases for content, or by buying the app at US$2.99.

  • Four apps for the Royal Wedding

    royal wedding
When it comes to European royalty, Americans go crazy. Beyond the garden-variety obsession with royalty, British royalty in particular is like Yank catnip. The ultimate bonkers-maker, however, is British royal weddings.

When there's a royal wedding across the pond, Americans absolutely seem to lose their marbles. There's just no getting around it. You can't listen to the radio or turn on the TV without hearing about Prince William and Kate Middleton. Seriously, right now those two are bigger than Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, which I didn't think was even possible.

And don't even think about browsing a newsstand. Close to half of the magazines have the royal and royal-to-be on the cover. Maybe it's the romanticism of it all or the fact that we Americans tend to mix fantasy with aspiration, but whatever the cause, I'm happy to contribute to the hysteria. Without further ado, here is a list of four iOS apps that allow you to live out the royal wedding on your iPhone and iPad. Best of all, all the apps are free, so you can hold onto the family jewels.

The Royal Wedding by Hello! -- This app, brought to you by one of the trashiest gossip magazines in the UK, is little more than a photo scrapbook of the fairytale romance between Wills and Kate. It's got dedicated albums for the bride and groom, along with albums dedicated to royal wedding rings, wedding dresses and gifts. One of the cooler albums shows images from past royal weddings.

  • Testing the Sonos-AirPlay solution

AirPlay is a very cool technology, but it's limited to the second generation Apple TV and a few receivers. Sonos, as I reported last week, has come up with its own way to integrate AirPlay into a multi-room music system, and the company was nice enough to lend me an Apple AirPort Express to try it out.

Since I already had a Sonos music system, the AirPort Express was the only missing piece. You plug AirPort Express in, connect it to one of your Sonos ZonePlayers with an Ethernet cable, and run a stereo mini-plug to stereo RCA cable from the AirPort Express to your Sonos unit.

From there, you open the AirPort Utility (it ships with OS X, and you can download a Windows version) and configure it in a couple of easy steps. You then move to your updated free ZonePlayer software version 3.4 to let the Sonos system know that the AirPort Express is there. That's it.

From that point on you can wirelessly stream audio from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad into your Sonos system. The Sonos is smart enough to auto switch to the correct input, and then you can hear the music on any individual ZonePlayer or on all of them at the same time. Of course, since the playlists on my iPhone and iPad are subsets of the music that Sonos normally has access to from my Mac, there's not much advantage there. On the other hand, I went out running yesterday listening to a podcast, and when I got back to the house, I was just a couple of taps away from hearing it on any or every audio system I had in the house. When the audio switched, not even a word was dropped.

  • Talkcast reminder: Holiday edition, 10 PM ET Sunday

It's talkcast time again, and since it's also Easter Sunday we expect that some of our usual gang of chatterboxes may be tied up with religious or family obligations (and possibly sleeping off an overdose of Peeps).

With that in mind, we're not going to worry too much about polishing the agenda or sorting out our topics of conversation ahead of time; if you show up, and there's something you want to talk about, we'll talk about it. Rumored MacBook Air refresh? iPhone finally turning white? iOS location leaks and privacy concerns? Apple grabbing the lion's share of wireless profits? You name it, we'll tawk.

To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the TalkShoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 PM EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cell phone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.

If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Blink or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here (if you like Blink, the pro version is available in the Mac App Store). Talk to you tonight.
