  • TUAW's Daily App: Trainz Simulator

I got to see the Trainz Simulator in action at GDC this year. The Trainz series of software is extremely popular on the PC, and the company released an iPad version a little while ago to pretty high acclaim. I will admit to knowing nearly nothing about trains, either the real or the miniature kind (though I did have a small set as a kid), but I have to say I was impressed by the variety of the options available on the iPad version -- you can create a full virtual train set, from locomotive to caboose and even the buildings and scenery around it, completely within the touch interface of the iPad.

It's pretty impressive. If you're not already schooled in the way of the model train, you might even be a little overwhelmed with all of the options available. But it is a fun way to play around with model trains without spending a ton of money on actual train items, and since the new version is coming out soon on the PC (Trainz 12 is due out in mid-April), the iPad version is on sale this weekend for just US$0.99. At that price, it's cheap enough to just download and see what you think of all the tools available for building up your own train set.

  • Apple debuts iWarp: 'Interstellar travel for the rest of us'

Apple has unveiled a revolutionary new product that promises to change the way we travel forever. Dubbed iWarp, Apple's latest creation is a matter-antimatter reactor only one inch thick that can transport a crew of seven humans to Alpha Centauri and back on a single charge.

"For decades, we've been stuck in low Earth orbit in big, clunky spaceships. They were slow, expensive, unreliable and just not a whole lot of fun to fly. But the iWarp changes all of that. It's interstellar travel for the rest of us," Apple CEO Steve Jobs told reporters and tech bloggers gathered at Apple's "data center" in North Carolina. That data center has in fact turned out to be a state-of-the-art advanced physics research facility where, over the past few years, Apple's engineers have learned to harness Jobs' famous Reality Distortion Field for practical applications.

"The iWarp is incredible, but it's also very simple," Jobs said in a brief demo. "After inserting a small amount of fuel, the user simply taps a destination on the attached Retina Display -- which supports full Multi-Touch capabilities -- and BOOM. iWarp does the rest." Jobs and the assembled reporters then travelled to the Zeta II Reticuli star system, a distance of 12 parsecs, in a matter of seconds.

"And the best part is this," Jobs said after pressing the "Home" button and bringing the awed assembly of reporters back to Earth. "We're selling the iWarp at a price we think our competitors won't be able to match: $999. iWarp comes in black or white, and it'll be shipping in white from day one."

Critics from the Android camp have already dismissed the iWarp as a "toy." Andy Rubin in particular has lambasted Apple for its "closed ecosystem," saying that "users can't input their own space-time coordinates on the iWarp. You can only choose from Apple's pre-approved star systems. This creates a 'walled garden' approach to interstellar travel, which doesn't benefit users as much as Android's open model." When asked when Google expects to deliver a competitive Android-based device, Rubin replied, "We expect to have the Licorice version of Android ready to go in early 2012, but it'll be up to the starship manufacturers if they want to support it."

In a typically terse response to an email criticising Apple's "closed" approach to interstellar travel, Jobs pointed out that "Without precise calculations, you could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova. And that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?"

  • Viber for iPhone updated with free text messaging

I liked Viber when I tested it several months ago. It's an iPhone VoIP app that allows free phone calls to any phone that has the app installed. I thought the terrific audio quality, lack of ads and ease of setup were all positives.

Viber has been updated today to version 2.01 with free text messaging to all your Viber contacts. There are also notifications for incoming text messages, and the app has some small GUI improvements. Although Viber currently does not support the iPad or iPod touch, the developers say that is "almost here."

Viber Media claims the app has had more than 10 million downloads. The app requires iOS 3.1 or greater. There will be Android and BlackBerry versions, but those apps have been promised for several months and are no-shows so far. The app works on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks, and best of all, it's free.

  • Diamonds plus nano plus watch equals this $18k monstrosity

Zshock iPod Nano bling bling bling

There is, it has to be admitted, a market for diamond-encrusted Apple products. Having the good taste to buy something magical and revolutionary doesn't necessarily mean you have good taste full stop.

So, for those of you with more (way, way more) money than sense who live at the blingier end of the Apple marketplace, we present the ZShock Lunatik iPod nano watch case (the clue's in the name). Yes, for a mere US$18,000 and a three- to four-week wait, ZShock will "hand-set the diamonds into pave settings on the white gold watch case" of your iPod nano watch, Boy Genius (who seems to quite like this, strangely) tells us.

Is it just me or does the nano in this picture look sort of embarrassed?

  • Forbes: China growth will propel AAPL shares to $547 in the next nine months

Eric Jackson at Forbes has written a piece with some astounding numbers about Apple's business in China. Most impressively, Jackson thinks that because of Apple's China business, Apple shares will hit $547 per share by January 2012, which is only nine months away. That's an impressive upswing from AAPL's closing price of $348.51 yesterday.

Jackson opines that Apple's four current Chinese Apple stores bring in US$1.3 billion per year, per store. With Apple set to open as many as 25 retail stores in China, and the Chinese "gaga for Apple," that means Apple's Chinese retail stores alone could draw in another US$32bn a year for the company. That's not counting iPhone sales through carrier stores, Apple's online China store or Cybermart, Apple's largest third-party retailer (owned by Foxconn). Cybermart has only 34 retail outlets today, but it's planning on building up to 500 locations in the future, each with its own special Apple Shop within the store (much like Best Buy's Apple Shop store-within-a-stores).

With the largest economy on the planet, it's no wonder that Jackson sees China as key to Apple's future growth. And it's likely that China will propel Apple to its first $100bn+ net income fiscal year ever when Apple's fiscal year ends in September.

  • Stop-motion iPad also magical, revolutionary

    iPlasticine

The magical, revolutionary iPad is not just in and of itself magical and revolutionary, of course; it also inspires people to be magical and revolutionary, as in this marvellous stop-motion video of a plasticine iPad produced by 26-year-old Ukrainian Svetlana Shokhanova. It was made for the "Post Digital Brief at the British Higher School of Art and Design (Moscow), Interactive and New Media course." We really love this.

Of course, as commenters say on YouTube, a plasticine iPad does have its advantages -- while it has a pretty lousy FPS, it can be jailbroken with Play-Doh.

  • Time Warner Cable iPad app drops channels under programmer pressure

Time Warner's TWCable TV app has been forced to drop several channels after some programmers demanded it do so. The app allows Time Warner subscribers to watch TV shows on their iPads without paying any additional fees, and that "no additional fees" part is apparently what some programmers weren't okay with.

Time Warner's email to customers detailing the change is full of some great zingers against the programmers who forced this change upon it, and we've reprinted some of them on the next page. Meanwhile, the following channels have been removed from Time Warner's app:

    • Discovery channels: Animal Planet, Discovery, TLC
    • Fox channels: FX, National Geographic
    • Viacom channels: BET, CMT, Comedy, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, VH1

Time Warner assures its customers that no other channels are expected to be dropped, and it's working to add channels to replace those it's been forced to remove.

  • Rolando and Rolando 2 updated with Retina Display, on sale now

Ngmoco has surprised us with some updates. Rolando and its sequel Rolando 2 have both been updated for the iPhone 4's Retina Display and have had a few bug issues fixed. To celebrate the update, they're both on sale for just US$0.99. Either one of these is a bargain at that price. They're both very solid, original platformers, designed specifically for the iOS system.

What's most interesting about this, though, is that Ngmoco has updated these at all. Rolando was one of the first big titles for the now gigantic iOS developer, but when Ngmoco moved into the We Rule freemium model, the Rolando series was more or less abandoned in favor of games that could use more microtransactions and attract more "DAUs" (daily active users). A lot of Rolando fans were disappointed with that direction, though Ngmoco's We Rule and other freemium games have seen plenty of success anyway.

Rolando creator Simon Oliver's HandCircus has been working on a PSN game instead, but maybe with these updates, there's a possibility we could finally see Ngmoco return to the little rolling hero and his series.

  • Arkansas to get its first Apple Retail Store

This is going to make our readers in The Natural State very happy. Apple is set to open its first retail store in Arkansas. The store will be located in The Promenade at Chenal Mall in Little Rock, reports ifoAppleStore. While there is no hard opening date yet, all signs point to an October launch.

In 2007, a year before the Chenal Mall opened, "Apple" was listed as a tenant, but the store failed to materialize by the time the mall opened in 2008, despite Apple filing for a building permit in November 2007 and posting job listings in January 2008. However, after new job postings for the Little Rock Apple Store surfaced last week, it appears the store is back on.

After the opening of the Arkansas store and a store in Anchorage, AK in September, as MacRumors notes, there will only be six states in the US still without an Apple retail store: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

  • Sword and Sworcery LP coming out April 5, iPhone version in a few weeks

Sword and Sworcery is an unqualified hit for the iPad -- as I said when it released, we've been following this one for a while, and it's great to see such a solid indie effort recognized by critics and consumers alike. While the game is out for iPad, the property is far from over. A full LP based on the music of the game, written by musician Jim Guthrie, has been announced for release on April 5th, next Tuesday. "The Ballad of the Space Babies" will be available as a vinyl record, or online as a digital download in iTunes or Bandcamp.

There's also an iPhone version of the game on the way -- I talked to Nathan Vella of Capy about it, and he told me that work continues apace. The plan all along has been to release it around a month after the iPad release, and Capy is still on that schedule, so we should see an iPhone version (optimized for the smaller platform, of course) about three weeks from now.

  • Patent hints at Apple's Spaces on the iPad

PatentlyApple has dug up a patent application Apple filed with the USPTO, which demonstrates that Apple is at least considering bringing Spaces to the iPad. While not mentioning the iPad by name, the patent does say that "In some embodiments, the device [for this patent application] is a desktop computer. In some embodiments, the device is portable (e.g., a notebook computer, a tablet, or a handheld device)."

Apple notes that the current method of switching between windows or applications on a device are "cumbersome and inefficient," requiring multiple presses or clicks which "create a significant cognitive burden on a user" and take longer than necessary, therefore wasting energy.

Apple suggests implementing Spaces on touch screen devices via a two-finger pinch in the corner of the screen. This two-finger pinch would display a grid of all open spaces or virtual desktops. The user could then use a single finger to swipe the selected Spaces grid into full screen view, thus enabling that Space.

Once again, we remind readers that Apple typically patents things that never see the light of day, but this hypothetical Spaces technology on the iPad would by much more user friendly than the current multitasking options available, which require the user to double-press the iPad's Home button then swipe a row of apps at the bottom of the screen before finally selecting an app to activate.

  • Latest Lion build features iCal, iChat redesign

The latest Lion Developer Preview released yesterday features some cool new redesigns of a few of Mac OS X's built-in apps. First up is a completely redesigned iCal. The new iCal now closely resembles the Calendar app you find on the iPad. It sports a leather header, complete with strips of torn away calendars. The overall look and feel of the new iCal, like its iPad counterpart, now closely resembles a physical desktop calender.

Another redesign, though less noticeable than the new iCal UI, is an updated iChat UI which combines AIM, Jabber, and Bonjour contacts together in one window. This is a welcome tweak, as previously iChat separated all your different contacts into separate windows.

With the above changes, and the fact that Address Book in OS X Lion already got a similar overhaul so it closely matches the Address Book app on the iPad, I wouldn't think it's too much to hope that GameCenter for the Mac App Store and iBooks for OS X is too far off.

  • Taiwanese firm to ship 30 million iPad 2 screens

Reuters is reporting that Taiwanese tech manufacturer AU Optronics Corp. has won a major contract from Apple to provide flat panel screens for the ultra-popular iPad 2.

With the high demand for the new device, it's no surprise that Apple is looking for new sources for this critical iPad 2 component. The AU Optronics contract will provide up to 30 million of the displays, occupying over half the capacity of the company's plant in Taichung.

The report cites local Taiwanese paper The Economic Daily News as the source, and MacStories notes that AU Optronics is the world's fourth-largest supplier of LCDs. The move by Apple follows unprecedented demand for the iPad 2, which has likely sold just over a million units in just the first weekend of availability. There has been speculation that the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan would cause production constraints on certain iPad 2 components, including the screens. With this new source of displays, Apple's ability to produce and ship iPad 2s should remain unfettered.

  • Twitter for iPhone updated, QuickBar is dead

The Twitter for iPhone app has been updated (again), and this time the company has included the change everyone's been waiting for: the QuickBar, which featured trending terms along with some paid placement phrases, has been removed from the app. Twitter deftly sidesteps the actual reason why the bar was removed, but their reasoning basically lands on the idea that the bar didn't "improve the user experience" or serve the mission of connecting people to trends on the service. Whatever the reasons, the QuickBar is gone, despite what Twitter says are "incredibly high usage metrics," so the voice of the crowd wins this round.

Twitter says it will continue to experiment boldly, however, so it's unlikely that the trending topics are going to be gone for good. Still, after all of the fervor around this particular feature, it is nice to see that the company is taking public outcry into consideration. Those against the QuickBar (who gave it all of its silly monikers) will be happy to hear about the update.

  • World Backup Day: Ad-hoc backups to the cloud & more giveaways

time-machine-logo_270.jpgHappy World Backup Day! The only safe way forward is to back up; that's why we've joined the cause for data saving with tips, techniques and giveaways all day today.

As Steve mentioned earlier today, there are lots of cloud-based backup services eager to help you protect your data while solving the onsite/offsite conundrum. A backup of uncertain status in a single location isn't much better than no backup at all -- for one thing, it gives you a sense of confidence that your data is protected when it might not be.

Getting your data tucked away with DollyDisk, Backjack, Backblaze, Mozy, Carbonite or CrashPlan may not be the fastest or cheapest approach, but sooner or later it may save your bacon. Compare and contrast plans here. (Lifehacker has a full rundown on how CrashPlan can help you sleep soundly at night, knowing your backups are solid.)

Even if you're not up for a full-on cloud backup solution (whether due to bandwidth or budget constraints), there are still some surprisingly easy ways to back up your key files in the cloud, and do it for cheap or free. All of these approaches require a bit more thinking than the automated tools above, but if you're the sort of person who makes copies of your bank statements or saves your dry cleaning receipts, then you can probably get into these habits too.

  • eBay reveals iPad 2 sales numbers

    (Image from eBay.com)

While we'll need to wait until the April 20th Q2 2011 Apple earnings call to get the official figures on exactly how many iPads and iPad 2s have been sold, CNET has published some stats from online auction house eBay on how many of the new iPads have changed hands through their service. If eBay's numbers are any indication, Apple shareholders will have a lot to smile about.

Just under 12,000 iPad 2s were sold in the two weeks between the introduction of the iPad in the US and the international launch last Friday. The surprising statistic was that many of those iPad 2s (65%) were sold within the US. At last year's launch of the original iPad, the majority of eBay purchasers were outside of the country (also 65%).

International purchases of the iPad 2 are mainly going to Canada, Russia, Hong Kong, Japan, and the UK. Last year's figures showed a large volume of 16 GB iPads heading to Russia, and Russian buyers also paid the highest average markup at a whopping $306 over retail for the 32 GB model.

  • World Backup Day: Turn, turn, turn + more giveaways

time-machine-logo_270.jpgHappy World Backup Day! We can't really emphasize this strongly enough: you need good backups, and you need them now. That's why we've joined the cause for data saving with tips, techniques and giveaways all day today.

For Mac users running Leopard or Snow Leopard (10.5 or 10.6), the good news about backup is that you've got a pretty solid tool already installed and ready to roll: Time Machine. We've covered the basics on Time Machine before, but there are a couple of ways to supplement and improve your TM experience -- making your backups safer and simpler.

Ask an IT professional about backups, and you might hear a maxim like "If you haven't verified that you can restore the data, it's not a backup; if you haven't made at least two copies and sent one of them offsite, it's not a backup either." Most Mac owners would do well to follow these guidelines, as it's far too easy for a single backup drive (especially one sitting right next to your computer) to fall victim to trouble and woe.

  • Vimeo for iPhone doesn't disappoint

Vimeo released an official iPhone app yesterday, and it does not disappoint. As a 1.0 release, it's impressive. Consider it a one-stop shop for watching, recording, editing and delivering video to Vimeo. There are a few bumps in the road, but all-in-all Vimeo for iPhone is a solid offering. Here's my experience with the app.

    UI

Vimeo for iPhone is a portrait orientation kind of app. Unless you're shooting or viewing video, it wants to be vertical. You're first presented with your video library, aptly named "My Video Library." Across the top of the screen are the Camera and New ("+") buttons, followed by a list of your previously-uploaded videos. These can be viewed in list or thumbnail layout, and sorted by date or number of views. A search function returns results as you type, which is nice.

At the bottom of the screen you'll find buttons for My Videos, Recordings, My Stuff (which includes sub-tabs for Inbox, Watch Later and Likes,) Browse (by channel) and finally account information.

Browsing your videos in list view provides information on views, number of favorites and comments at a glance. Otherwise, tap a video to find those details and more, like tags, privacy setting, stats and licensing options.

  • World Backup Day: Mozy app puts backed-up files at your fingertips

Here's another product for World Backup Day. Mozy, a well-respected and veteran cloud backup solution for Mac and PC, has delivered Mozy to the App Store. This app, which is a free download that works with any iOS device, gives you access to all of those files from your computer that have been backed up to Mozy's servers.

If you're a subscriber to Mozy's service, you can view files from any of the computers backed up to your account. The app tells you when the last backup was completed, and navigating to the individual folders is a matter of a few taps.

Once you've found a file that you're interested in using, numerous actions are available -- with a tap, the file can be emailed or opened in a compatible application on your iPhone or iPod touch. Photos stored on your computer can be published to Facebook, viewed in high resolution, or saved to your local camera roll as well.

What's cool about this is that it provides much of the functionality of Dropbox (cloud storage) while ensuring that your Mac or PC is being backed up at the same time. Of course, the Mozy app doesn't provide the offline access that Dropbox for Mac and PC does, but neither does the actual Dropbox iOS client. (Update: According to commenter Rdnymllnsktr, it is possible in the Dropbox app simply by tapping the star below a viewed file. That downloads the file as a Favorite, and it is then available to open in a compatible app.)

If you have 2 GB or less of critical data that you need to back up, Mozy provides a free account. This is also a great way to try out the backup service. Paid accounts are available over the 2 GB limit for US$5.99 a month for 50 GB (and one computer) or 125 GB (and up to three computers) for $9.99 monthly.

Here at TUAW, we're trying to get out the word about World Backup Day to make sure that you're not part of the estimated 80% of computer users who don't have current backups of data. As I always tell computer users, if you haven't lost data yet, you will. "Set and forget" backup services such as Mozy, Backblaze, BackJack, CrashPlan and Carbonite are a low-cost and simple way to keep a copy of your data offsite in case of a local catastrophe.

  • Zite draws the ire of publishers

I liked Zite when I reported on it earlier this month. In fact, I use it every day as a great news and information discovery app on my iPad. The app is free, and for now, still in the App Store with very strong user ratings.

There's no love, however, from publishers that claim Zite infringes copyright. A group including Time Inc, Dow Jones, The Washington Post, The Associated Press and others have sent Zite a cease and desist letter claiming that intellectual property is being misappropriated, and the publishers have asked Zite to "immediately stop doing so." The letters goes on to say that Zite, "by systematically reformatting, republishing and redistributing our original content on a mass commercial scale without our permission in your iPad application, Zite directly and adversely impacts our businesses."

The publishers, of course, have a valid point. Zite articles aren't direct linked, but it is an option within each story. Publishers can request direct links, and some have. The Zite developers may have to change the app to always supply direct links to articles, rather than reformat them inside the app.

  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me tame my bookmarks

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

Help me Auntie! I've got a zillion--maybe 3 or 4 less--bookmarks. I want to validate the good ones and discard the bad. Is there an app for that?

I mean automatically do this and then give me options for saving the good/tossing the bad and perhaps even seeing if the root domain is still active?

Thanks for helping a nephew out!

    Love,

  • Apple marketing VP Allison Johnson leaving the company

One of the brains behind Apple's ad campaigns, Allison Johnson, is leaving the company to start a new marketing firm with a former Facebook PR executive.

According to John Paczkowski at AllThingsD, Johnson reported directly to Steve Jobs and managed Apple's ad campaigns, which were of course created by TBWA\Chiat\Day. Johnson was at Apple for 6 years and was at HP before that.

We wish her the best of luck in her new venture.

  • Apple reportedly to absorb costs from Japan tragedies

As Japan's people and industries respond to the recent horrible disasters, routine electrical brownouts are being rolled out to conserve available resources. Manufacturing is being affected as a result, and the tech industry is not immune.

DigiTimes reports that Apple will absorb the extra cost of timely production, ensuring both smooth shipments and profitability for upstream suppliers, at least in the short term.

Sources tell DigiTimes that suppliers like Anisotropic Conductive Films (ACF) and ITO materials will be able to meet targets through May at this point.

Last week Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster noted that the tragedy in Japan hadn't "meaningfully impacted iPad 2 supply," suggesting that effects of the earthquake and tsunami would only add one or two weeks to shipping times.

Apple has made it possible for customers to donate to the Red Cross relief efforts in iTunes.

  • Fuze Meeting delivers multiparty video conferencing to iPad 2

The latest updates to Callwave's distributed conferencing platform, Fuze Meeting, have added a rather dramatic new feature that's perfect for iPad 2 owners (not to mention Android 'Honeycomb' tablets like the Motorola Xoom and older 'Froyo' devices): multi-party video conferencing.

Meeting hosts who subscribe to the company's Pro plan (US$69 per month for unlimited meetings with up to 100 attendees) get the new face-to-screen capability. Video conferences support up to 10 simultaneous participants on the browser-based client (fewer simultaneous streams on mobile devices), and the quality tops out at 720p HD while adjusting down as needed for bandwidth limitations.

We've covered Fuze before, and the core iPad app has kept its full feature set moving forward into the video conferencing realm. You can still share content directly from the iPad app (in fact, it's gotten easier, now that iOS 4.x multitasking means you don't have to relaunch the app if you switch into Dropbox to grab files). If you want to launch your camera, it's one tap to start the video conference, then a second tap to turn your direct view on. Image quality is comparable to FaceTime, although the default video window is much smaller.

You can also use VoIP directly on the iPad to join Fuze conference calls, saving you from juggling phone and pad as you participate in the meeting. You can use the Fuze app's laser pointer tool to highlight elements within PPT, image/PDF, or video content as the meeting rolls along. Of course, the desktop/browser Fuze client has evolved along with the new features, and it also supports the 10-party video chat feature.

  • Boxee to add iPad support, more in May

Boxee confirmed on its blog that its next update will add support for the Apple iPad. The streaming content provider will release the Boxee for iPad app that will let you stream content from your Boxee Box to your Apple iPad over a wireless connection. This feature would be ideal for some late night Boxee watching from your bed or some entertainment while you log miles on your treadmill.

Besides iPad support, the browser will be faster and offer new on-screen controls. New languages such as French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish and several bug fixes will also be included in this update. In keeping with its three-month update schedule, the new Boxee Box firmware will arrive in May.

  • MS exec says tablet computing may not be 'persistent'

Microsoft's view of computing in the post-pc era is quite different than Apple's. Apple anticipates the tablet will temporarily fill the void between the smartphone and the computer. Eventually, it will replace the computer for many users.

Microsoft, on the other hand, questions the longevity of the tablet market and is slow to embrace this emerging market after its earlier, failed UMPC Origami project. Speaking at a luncheon in Sydney, Australia, Craig Mundie, the chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft, said

"Today you can see tablets and pads and other things that are starting to live in the space in between (a PC and a smartphone). Personally, I don't know whether that space will be a persistent one or not."

The future for Microsoft lies in connectivity of devices that does not tie to you a computer sitting on a desk. The computer will be "in the room" and controlled by a wireless controller similar to the Kinect.

This wait-and-see attitude towards the tablet is further evident in Microsoft's current tablet strategy. The Redmond company pushed HP's Windows 7-powered slate in 2010, but the device failed to attract customers. Future tablets will be based on Windows 8 and will not debut until 2012 at the earliest.

While Microsoft waits until 2012 to release a tablet competitor, Apple will have sold over 30 million iPads in 2011 alone.

  • Popular Science has sold 10,000 iPad magazine subscriptions

When Apple introduced its new subscription terms earlier this year, Popular Science embraced this change and introduced subscription-based billing into its iPad-based magazine. Now that six weeks have elapsed, publisher Bonnier Technology Group is happy to report that Pop Sci now has 10,000 iPad subscribers. Each subscriber pays US$14.99 for one-year of access to the magazine's digital content.

Gregg Hano, VP-group publisher at the Bonnier Technology Group, says the publisher had no idea what to expect when it launched its magazine subscription and is "very excited" by these early results. Though this 10K figure is small compared to the 1.3 million paid print subscribers, it is a step in the right direction for the publisher.

The biggest drawback to Apple's subscription model is the lack of subscriber information provided to the publisher. Subscriber information stays within Apple's iTunes system, and Hano admits the publisher currently has no demographic information on the individuals purchasing its digital magazine. Continued growth may require the publisher to develop an alternative method to find out who is buying and reading its iPad magazine.

  • TUAW's Daily App: 8-bit Pocket Camera

The iPhone's camera has only gotten better over the years, with higher resolutions, better ways to deal with low lighting and brighter colors than ever. But here's an app that passes on all of that technology for a much more retro feel. The 8-bit Pocket Camera app is designed to take pictures the old-fashioned way: as low-res black-and-white 200x200 pixel .tiff files, just like the old Game Boy Camera and other early digital cameras did. Why would you want to take pictures that way? Well, you might not. But it's more of a nostalgia thing; just as apps like Hipstamatic are great at making iPhone pictures look like old film or old instant cameras, these pictures might take you right back, if you happen to have taken some shots in the right time period.

There's a real raw quality to these, and I don't mean .RAW files. These are straight up black-and-white shots, full of digital noise and pixelated lines. They may not look great, but they certainly have a feel to them, and with 8-bit Pocket Camera, you can take these pictures, put any number of old-school effects on them and send them out via Facebook or Twitter. The app's currently on sale for a launch price of just US$0.99.

  • Suppliers ramp up to support iPad 2 demand

    Component supply ramped up

With queues still forming at 4 AM at some Apple stores, and whole countries selling out completely, demand for the iPad 2 is so high that Apple suppliers are ramping up production of its various components.

AppleInsider reports that Samsung is hiring 300 new engineers for a semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas, and AU Optronics has an order to make flat panel screens (although this has not yet been confirmed). With earlier stories about other suppliers being taken on to make Apple's A5 processor and touch sensors, it does seem as if Apple is indeed ramping up production. Analyst Charlie Wolf with Needham & Company predicts Apple will make 30 million iPads this year and 40 million in 2012.

Samsung alone will make something like US$7.8 billion worth of components for Apple next year, and others are looking for a share of Apple's business. With a new iPhone model expected later this year, this doesn't look like a process that's going to slow down any time soon.

  • SmithBucklin distributes iPad 2s to employees
    SmithBucklin

There was a time when if you saw an Apple product in a corporate environment, you were either hanging out with the company's designers or actually at Apple HQ itself. So it's great to see companies not only using Apple gear but using it to incentivize and reward its staff like SmithBucklin, the world's largest association management and professional services company, is doing.

It's giving its 600+ employees 32 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2s, plus $50 toward accessories "as a way to reward excellent staff performance, improve productivity and enhance the company's social media capabilities," according to the company. "Now that our company is entering a new growth phase, we wanted to do something special for our employees to thank them for staying the course as well as help them continue to embrace social networking," said SmithBucklin President and CEO Henry S. Givray.

You can apply for a job with SmithBucklin here -- note that you'll be able to upgrade your iPad 2 to 64 GB and Verizon or AT&T 3G service "for a nominal fee."

  • Apperian picks up first enterprise iFund payout

The iFund has been pretty influential ever since it was announced a couple of years ago -- it's a pool of money set up by Apple and a few other companies to support and grow companies that are contributing to the iOS ecosystem.

It's been growing along with Apple's platform, and now the fund has made its first contribution to an enterprise developer. Apperian is a company that helps enterprises create and deploy their own mobile apps, and it's picked up $9.5 million in a round of funding that includes money from the iFund.

We've covered the use of iPhone and iPad in business quite a bit, and Apperian sits squarely in that wheelhouse, consulting with various companies on how to create and securely distribute their own mobile apps. iFund's Matt Murphy says that Apperian is riding the wave of mobile devices that are showing up in the corporate workplace, and that "Apperian's solution is perfectly timed to help enterprises rollout and manage all their applications across their employee base and its wide variety of smart devices."

Sounds like a solid plan. It's excellent to see Apple's platform growing in all kinds of different directions.

Wow, this is incredible! iOS developer Gameloft is releasing a new app called Pet Pal, which uses sound wave technology to actually control your pets via the iPhone! The sound frequencies emitted from the iPhone activate certain centers of a cat or dog's brain, harmlessly commanding it to bend to your will. We've seen some pretty amazing things from the iPhone before, but this truly is magical and revolutionary. Think of the medical applications! This is the future we're seeing here, people, live in action!

  • AT&T CEO promises improved service from T-Mobile deal

Businessweek had a chat recently with AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, and he told them that the pending merger with T-Mobile would have the intended effect of improving service and capacity on the networks for all of AT&T's devices, including, of course, the iPhone. "Virtually on the day you close the deal, getting a 30 percent lift in capacity in New York City: that's a significant improvement in call quality and data throughput," he said. That's a nice big promise to make -- something that will be easy to check up on the day the merger gets closed.

Stephenson also speaks to the merger's opposition, saying that the cell phone service providing market is plenty intense. "It is intense before we do this transaction, it will be intense after we do this transaction." Stephenson also suggested that the deal might lower costs for AT&T customers overseas (since potentially, the international arm of T-Mobile would be ready to do deals with the US arm that AT&T will own). He's obviously got some good reasons for the merger, but then again, he stands to make plenty of money if it's approved. If the deal does go through, AT&T has said it expects to finish everything within a year from now.

  • Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview Update 1 is out

    The Lion just purred.

Apple pushed out an update to the developer preview of the next Mac operating system today. Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview Update 1 is available via Software Update and is the first update since the developer preview first came out on February 24, 2011.

The update is minuscule -- 2.2 MB -- and according to the update notes "This update is required to redeem downloads of Mac OS X Lion seed builds from the Mac App Store." There you have it -- future updates of the seed builds will be done through the Mac App Store and not Software Update.

The update follows recent reports that Apple was set to deploy a Golden Master release of the operating system, which means that the feature set for Lion could be close to being cast in stone.

  • iPhone theft results in a tragic death

We have often written feel-good stories about the quick recovery of stolen iPhones, usually with the assistance of Find My iPhone. Unfortunately, today's story of a theft turned horrifying and tragic when a Chicago woman died after a fleeing thief shoved her down a flight of stairs.

According to the Chicago Breaking News, Sally Katona-King was standing at the Fullerton station platform on her way home from work during rush hour Monday afternoon when a thief stole the iPhone from another commuter and pushed Katona-King in his haste to flee the scene. Katona-King was hospitalized after falling down a set of stairs at the station and died Tuesday from what officials believe was a cerebral hemorrhage.

Apple has released a "supplemental update" to OS X version 10.6.7 specifically for the 13" MacBook Air model released late last year. The update reportedly fixes an issue that made the devices "unresponsive when using iTunes," and it clocks in at a tiny 461 KB.

As always, the updates are available via Software Update, so if you've got a newish MacBook Air, load up the app and check to see if you need to install it. Afterwards, you'll be able to use iTunes without issue among other fixes.
