  • iOS gains ad share from Android in March, remains hottest app platform

Each month, Millenial Media issues its Mobile Mix report. It's full of stats on market share and advertising impressions by mobile device platform. The March report had some upbeat news for Apple in that mobile ad impressions on iOS devices jumped a surprising 11% over the previous month. What was the source of the big increase in impressions? It appeared to be the debut of the iPhone on Verizon's network.

Android smartphones still lead iOS devices in terms of market share, with the bad robot now accounting for 48% of the market and Apple devices picking up 31%. Advertisers seem to be happier with iOS devices, since Apple's ad impressions are now growing at 29% month-to-month compared with 23% for Android.

Apple's iOS platform generated 47% of total revenues from application sales, with Android falling behind at 36%. RIM's BlackBerry trailed well behind the pack at a paltry 7% of total revenues. Gaming apps led the way for all platforms with 37% of total app sales. The report also shows that touchscreen devices have definitely picked up the love of smartphone buyers, with touchscreen-only devices such as the iPhone making up 59% of the total. By comparison, devices with a full QWERTY keyboard (like the traditional RIM BlackBerry) now account for only 13% of the device mix.

All of these numbers, which are based on Millenial Media's analysis of mobile advertising by device, point to thriving support for Apple's iOS platform. Next Wednesday's Apple Q2 2011 financial call should show similarly positive results. Be sure to join the TUAW staff next Wednesday at 5 PM EDT for live coverage of the quarterly call with financial analysts.

  • PadTab: inexpensive iPad wall mount

The PadTab is an iPad mounting system that takes your iPad and lets you mount it to a flat surface without the use of any power tool, screws or hammers. The PadTab is a two-piece solution that uses a high strength adhesive wall mount and a plastic mounting plate for your iPad. For the low cost of $19.95, you get a mounting plate for the iPad and two wall mounts. Additional wall mounts are available for $9.99 each. It is compatible with the iPad, the iPad 2 and select cases such as the Marware Hard Case.

We have not tested this system ourselves, but the idea is interesting. It would be an easy mounting solution to use in the kitchen for recipes and entertainment while you cook or in your workshop so you can follow This Old House while you build your brand new deck. Without using a stand or a stand case, you can keep your valuable counter or workbench space and still have your iPad close by. A win-win situation, no?

  • Taptu for iPad brings blended feeds to newsreader app lineup

Considering how eerily the 2001: A Space Odyssey version of a tablet newsreader matches the 2011 reality of the iPad, it's no surprise that the App Store landscape is getting crowded with newsreader options.

Beyond the standalone startups and the gray standards, a whole bunch of RSS-centric tools have made the scene: Flipboard, Early Edition, Pulse and more. Now we can add another reader to the master list: Taptu, a company with a heritage in search technology, has built out the free iPad version of its app to accompany the existing iPhone and Android versions. The app launches today in the App Store.

Taptu's CEO Mitch Lazar, a veteran of CNN and Yahoo!'s mobile efforts, told me that the experience of building the company's consumer search product (now discontinued) has informed and supported the newsreader platform that Taptu is aiming to create.

Given a serious search infrastructure, it's much easier to tackle the problems of story duplication and "what should I read now?" than it would be without that underlying intelligence. Taptu's recommendation engine will recommend related stories as you read, and it will find feeds and collections that match your interests over time.

  • Odd text string appears in App Store

An unusual text string began appearing in the iOS App Store today in the description section of the application. Specifically, the text string ix.Mac.MarketingName appears under the Requirements section and is listed as a supported device. This unusual string appeared shortly after Tweetbot went live and has appeared on different apps throughout the App Store.

Speculation is running rampant as people try to decipher the meaning behind this text string. Is it a placeholder for a new another device or just a glitch in the App Store introduced by some backend update? Some folks think it could be an indication the Apple TV will receive an update to support applications. The Apple TV theory is possible as the streaming media device has 8 GB of on-board storage; some of which may be used for buffering and some for temporary application storage.

The wildest theory reads closely into the syntax and suggests the ix is derived from iOS and OS X and could be an indication Apple is merging features of iOS into Mac OS X. Anyone care to comment on these above theories or offer one of your own?

Update: According to MacStories, the ix.Mac.MarketingName string has been removed from the listings on the App Store.

  • Official F1 Timing App 2011 for iPhone and iPad, is it worth $33?

F1 timing app 2011 for iPhone and iPad

Formula 1 has always been the pinnacle of the FIA's motor racing roster. It's the most technologically advanced motor racing championship on Earth, with the teams and drivers pushing their cars to the absolute limit every time they hit the track.

Everything on the cars is monitored remotely via a wireless data link; Formula 1 isn't a solo effort by the racing driver by any stretch of the imagination, it's most certainly a team game. From sector split times to track position, the amount of G experienced in the corners to the tire pressure and brake temperature, the team monitors it all from the pit lane wall and in the garage.

But what about the fans? How can they get a bigger slice of the data-pie when it comes to the race? That's where the officially licensed, universal Formula 1 Timing App 2011 for iOS comes in.

  • DODOcase for iPad 2 as good as the original

My love affair with the DODOcase is well documented. I've used one since day one, and I even credit one with saving my iPad's life (though the manufacturers note that the DODOcase is not an impact case). So, I was thrilled to be able to test a DODOcase for iPad 2 for the last week. As a bonus, I've also been using a BOOKback for iPad 2. Both are quite nice and will be especially appealing to those who appreciate good design. Here's my review.

    Looks

The DODOcase has been re-designed to accommodate Apple's new tablet, but the high-quality build and materials are unchanged. The exterior is wrapped in that nice, Moleskine-esque material and closes with a similar elastic band. The grain is a bit different than that on the notebooks, but at first glance, that's what most people will assume you're carrying.

On the inside, the iPad rests inside a hand-carved bamboo frame. Four rubber bumpers hold the iPad 2 firmly in place. And I mean firmly. I had to press to get it in where it was held tight. It's a grip that inspires confidence; you know the typical bumps and nudges won't knock your iPad free.

The top and bottom of the frame are cut away to expose the controls, speaker and dock connector (yes, you can connect the cable while the DODOcase is in use).

  • TUAW's Daily App: World of Goo

Let's be honest here, ... you probably already know all about World of Goo. You know it's an excellent little physics puzzler from 2D Boy, and honestly, you probably already bought it, considering that it sold better on the iPad than any other platform and has even been seen in the Humble Indie Bundle. Even if you haven't purchased it, you have probably heard from friends how inventive it is, and how building wacky towers of goo with little blobs to try and get them out of levels and into pipes is fun, funny and well worth the experience.

But there's one thing you may not have heard about World of Goo, and that's that it's now out and available on the iPhone. For US$0.99, you can now play this terrific, highly recommended (currently the best-rated iOS game on Metacritic) title on Apple's handheld smartphone. We probably don't even need to sell you on it -- you know if you want to go get it or not.

One word of warning, though: 2D Boy has also kindly updated the iPad version to work universally, so if you've already bought it on the iPad, you don't need to buy it again in order to play it on your iPhone. Hopefully that info will get out there and save some people from buying it on a second device. Or a third, or a fourth, or however many times they've bought this much-loved game before.

  • Navigon adds augmented reality and enhanced traffic to iOS apps

You can add augmented reality to the feature list for the Navigon app. The company calls it Reality Scanner, and it shows destinations and nearby points of interest by superimposing that information over a live camera view. This is a feature best used by pedestrians; I'd hate to see someone driving and waving his iPhone around to use this.

Navigon is also adding what it calls Safety Camera alerts, which is a way to warn drivers of speed and red light cameras along the route. The information comes from the RoadTraps data base. The app works with US speed and red light cameras and is available as an in-app purchase of US$4.99 for a lifetime subscription. Navigon is also adding Traffic Check, which provides a quick graphic that appears after you plan a route, detailing traffic jams ahead of you. There is no charge for this service, and it does not require the paid Traffic Live feature to work.

MobileNavigator North America apps are on sale for $15 off until April 28. That would bring the USA version to $34.99. Traffic Live is on sale for $14.99 for a lifetime subscription. The Navigon app works on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Check the gallery for some screen shots of the new features.

  • Mactracker app hits version 6.0

Mactracker has been a TUAW favorite for a while. For those of you not familiar with it, it's an application that lets you search a database of every Apple product ever made, including notebooks, iPods and even printers. Selecting an item shows you everything you could possibly want to know about it, whether it's the original memory it shipped with, the maximum OS it can take, or even the model's original cost in any number of currencies.

The version 6.0 release includes the latest Apple hardware, a new user interface and in-window search. As you can imagine, if you're just curious about your Mac, Mactracker can answer most questions you have about its specs, but if you're an IT specialist, Mactracker is an invaluable tool. Mactracker 6.0 is a free download from the developer's website or on the Mac App Store.

  • Do-not-track feature coming to Safari

The latest developer release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion includes a Safari web browser with do-not-track features built in. Do-not-track features in a web browser allow that browser to send messages to websites and advertising networks informing them that the user wishes not to be tracked. However, the feature is only effective if the advertiser or website agrees to not track a specific user, and right now advertisers and web sites are not legally required to honor the wishes of users using do-not-track features in browsers. As to be expected, major online advertising networks are dragging their heels saying they haven't yet agreed on how to implement do-not-track systems effectively.

With the do-not-track feature built into Safari in Lion, Apple joins the ranks of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox as do-not-track browsers. Google's Chrome is the only major do-not-track holdout. That should come as a shock to no one, considering Google is in the ad business. However, if you do use Chrome, you can download the free do-not-track extension Keep My Opt-Outs.

  • Tweetbot for iPhone / iPod touch: TUAW's first look

Back when the iPhone platform was still young and the App Store had just opened its virtual doors, one of the most remarkable apps in what seemed to be an endless stream of poorly executed ideas was a gem called Weightbot. The app is still around, and the 'bot still occupies a place of honor on my iPhone as it monitors the ups and downs of my diet.

Weightbot was the first in a series of apps from Tapbots, a development firm headlined by Mark Jardine and Paul Haddad. Each one of the succeeding apps, including Convertbot, Calcbot and Pastebot, has brought something innovative and well-designed to the market. While there were already a lot of unit conversion apps on the market by the time Convertbot hit the scene, Tapbots added an amazing interface with a rotating unit selector and conversion on the fly. Like Weightbot, the app is one of the few that still remains from the early days of the App Store.

So what could the Tapbots team bring their design savvy to next? We found out a few months ago when they announced Tweetbot (US$1.99 introductory price, $2.99 later). Now for many of us, the thought of yet another Twitter client was enough to cause extreme nausea. However, knowing the Tapbots folks, we were willing to take a closer look at this new app to see how it stands against the flock of Twitter apps already in the App Store. Take a gander at our first look at Tweetbot starting on the next page.

  • Sudden spike in iTunes 'The item you tried to buy is no longer available' errors

We have no idea why (sorry!), but there's apparently a surge in "missing" apps in the App Store tonight. This results in the error message "The item you tried to buy is no longer available" when you attempt to purchase.

Based on our search traffic hitting this post, the problem started earlier this evening and is affecting at least the US, UK, Canadian and Australian app stores. Apple's Pages is reportedly one of the affected apps.

Chances are this is a transient glitch and will be sorted out soon, so the best advice for the moment is to be patient and try again in an hour or so. If it's not cleared up by the AM hours on the East Coast, we'll update this post.

  • Bloomberg: White iPhone 4 to arrive by the end of April

For those of you waiting for the white iPhone 4 ever since Apple announced it almost ten months ago, your wait may soon be coming to an end. Bloomberg is citing "three people familiar with the plans" who say the white iPhone 4 will begin shipping in the next few weeks. The white iPhone will be available from both AT&T and Verizon.

The white iPhone was delayed a number of times because Apple was reportedly not happy with the quality of the paint. Apple even went so far as to go back to the drawing board and partner with a Japanese manufacturer to create a new type of paint that allowed for greater control of the thickness of it when applied to a material.

Bloomberg's sources echo what Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller said earlier this year -- that the white iPhone 4 was still coming, and it would be released sometime in the spring. Upon launch, it is assumed that the white iPhone 4 will ship in 16 GB and 32 GB versions like the black iPhone 4.

  • Webby Awards nominate iOS games and apps

The Webby Awards are being voted on this week, and along with the usual website and advertising divisions, there's now a "Mobile and Apps" category. As you might expect, there are plenty of iOS games and apps represented on the ballots. iPhone favorites Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja are nominated for Handheld Games, and lots of our other favorite apps show up as well, including MLB At Bat 2011 and the Marvel Comics App under Tablet Entertainment apps, Flipboard under Tablet News, and Dropbox under Services.

In short, if you're an iPhone user, there's lots of good choices for you to make over there right now. Voting runs through April 28, and then the award winners will be announced on June 13. We'll keep an eye out for them and let you know who walks away with the Webbys.

  • The iPad dock disassembled by iLounge

Wondering what the guts of the new iPad 2 dock look like? iLounge dove into the nitty gritty, and it turns out that there were a few surprises, actually. While the docks may look like pieces of plastic (and indeed, at just around $30, they could be about that), iLounge figures that Apple puts the same amount of thought into its accessories as it does into what they're supporting. In each stand is a solid piece of metal that makes it weighty, not only holding it down on the bottom, but actually curved up to support the iPad as it stands. And iLounge says it was "harder to get these Docks apart than any of the first three or four iPods," which means Apple built these things sturdy and to last.

In terms of actual computer hardware, as you might guess, there's not a lot -- just a few chips for functionality, like authentication and, of course, iPad synching. In fact, the iPad 2 dock, says iLounge, has more empty space than the first dock, even though the actual design is a little more compact than before. That likely means that Apple has been thinking about the dock not just as a computer add-on, but as an actual stand for the iPad -- a bigger dock base makes it sturdier while holding the iPad up.

Very interesting stuff. Bonus: With that big metal block inside of it, the iPad 2 dock might come in handy if you ever need to face down a home intruder!

  • TUAW TV Live: Big hardware, cool apps

To me, there's nothing more fun than hearing the doorbell ring as a box is delivered by my friendly FedEx, UPS or USPS driver. More often than not, they're delivering a piece of hardware or an accessory for me to test, and that makes a lot of days seem like Christmas morning. The rest of the time, the TUAW staff is braving a flood of app announcements, many of which are for really incredible apps.

That's why today's TUAW TV Live will feature some live app demos, and I'll also be showing you some of the hardware that's in the studio awaiting review. From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. If you're on an iPad, you should be able to use the Skyfire Browser to watch the stream, although you will not be able to participate in the chat.

We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you'll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the new TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

  • Apple publishes job posting for "Cloud Systems Software Engineer"

    Clouds on a building

A job posted by Apple last week suggests the company plans to expand its portfolio of "cloud-based" products and services, AppleInsider reports. According to the job description, the "Cloud Systems Software Engineer" will join a "small team" to "explore the far reaches of the possible," build "the future of cloud services at Apple," and form the foundation for the company's "exciting new products and services."

The job listing reveals nothing about Apple's specific plans for future web applications or services. The ideal candidate will likely be deeply involved with building internal systems for sharing data across Apple's family of cloud products. By asking for applicants that can collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and have experience constructing highly scalable software powered by a variety of data management systems, it looks like the Cupertino-based company wishes to add muscle to the core APIs that power its online products and services.

Apple currently offers a suite of web products and services called MobileMe for US$99 per year. Many, including The Wall Street Journal, speculate the company plans to dramatically enhance these services later this year. There's also the beta iWork.com, which has been in beta since 2009.

  • Unofficial videos of Final Cut Pro X arrive online

A couple of videos from the announcement of Final Cut Pro X last night have leaked out online, and you can watch them on the next page for as long as they stick around, though I'm not sure who would have the claim on these. As you would expect, the announcement shows off all the new features of the software, including the spiffy Content Analysis features, the audio track analysis and just how fast and smooth this thing is. It really is very impressive.

Part one is mostly a presentation, while part two gets more into a demo of the (very iMovie-like, actually) software. If you've been intrigued by what you've heard of Final Cut Pro X so far, these two videos are definitely a must-watch.

  • MagicPlan app magically creates interactive floor plans

Many years ago when my wife and I were looking for the perfect house, I used to pore over the floor plans that home builders would create. While it was often difficult to translate the lines that designated the walls and doors of the house into a three-dimensional representation of what the interior actually looked like, the floor plans were helpful in at least getting an idea of how foot traffic would flow and where we could place furniture when we could afford it.

A French-Canadian development company, Sensopia, has just released an app that takes the work out of creating floor plans. Sensopia's MagicPlan works with the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. To build a floor plan, you go into each room and take a picture of each corner of the room. By doing that, MagicPlan measures the walls and doors in the room, and it creates a floor plan of each room. You then slide the rooms into their proper location by dragging them on the screen, and MagicPlan aligns the rooms and manages the thickness of the walls. Finally, furniture and photos can be added to show what the actual house or apartment looks like, and geotagging information is attached.

The app is free for download, and the free version provides you with a watermarked non-commercial use JPEG, PDF or a version that is uploaded to a website for viewing. For US$4.99, the watermark is removed and the floor plan is available for commercial use. For US$9.99, Sensopia throws in six months of web hosting -- the latter is useful for real estate agents who want to show off floor plans and photographs to potential home buyers.

Mandojustin is frustrated by Safari on his iPad:

On my iPad, pages sometimes auto-refresh when returning to them, either during page-switching or when opening Safari. What's up with that? Can it be turned off?

When using Google Reader, I'll often check out a link and then decide I want to keep that item unread until later. However, when I go back to the page with reader open, the refresh makes the item disappear. I know I can go back and find it, but this is rather annoying.

  • iPad dry erase board for sketching app designs

App designers love to sketch out designs of possible UI layouts. Over the years, we've seen stacks of iPhone and iPad templates printed out in book form to be used for drawing dream user interfaces, and now a company called UI Stencils has come out with a great way to do brainstorming of iPad displays.

They've developed an iPad Dry Erase Board (US$24.95) with the dimensions of an iPad, complete with a 20-pixel grid for helping you align UI elements in their appropriate places. It comes with black and red dry erase markers, although if you're really artistic you might want to head on over to your nearest office supply store and pick up a spectrum of colors.

The back of the iPad Dry Erase Board has a handy guide to standard icons, device interactions, physical gestures, navigation icons and more. While some app designers might turn away from the concept of using a dry erase board to capture app layouts because they can't use it to make a permanent record of their design brainstorming, I can personally see using this along with the camera on an iPhone or, dare we say, and iPad 2 to keep track of revisions along the way.

  • New VW Bus concept comes with iPad interface

The venerable Volkswagen Bus has been remade for the next millennia, and the updated version of the hippie bus is now earth-friendly and technologically savvy. A concept version of the van, now called the Bulli, was showcased by Volkswagen at the Geneva International Motor Show held in March. The van is smaller than its Microbus predecessor and seats six within an interior that includes two full-length bench seats. The van also includes an electric motor capable of 90 miles of run-time with a 4-cylinder gas backup and an integrated interface made specifically for the iPad. All you Apple-loving, Birkenstock-wearing, sustainable living folk may want to keep a watchful eye to see if this concept makes it from drawing board to showroom floor.

  • Intel distributing Thunderbolt developer kits this quarter, more peripherals on the way

    Thunderbolt port

According to IDG News, Intel announced yesterday that Thunderbolt developer kits would be making their way out to manufacturers within this quarter, opening up development for the fledgling standard. The technology, previously known by its code name 'Light Peak,' began shipping on the 2011 MacBook Pro line, replacing the mini DisplayPort socket of the previous iteration.

The fully backwards compatible specification, which was announced on the 24th of February this year, encompasses both DisplayPort and PCI Express in a dual-channel, high-speed interconnect. Promising speeds of up to 10 Gbps along copper cables, there's a lot of potential for products that require high-speed connections but a minimum amount of cables.

Companies including Canon, Matrox, AJA, LaCie and Western Digital have shown off products already, but none have made it to market as yet. Intel is hoping that by distributing developer kits, it can get a plethora of Thunderbolt-connected products hitting the shelves quickly, not just external hard drives, which is great news for MacBook Pro users.

The holy grail of the one connector to rule them all may be a little ways off just yet, but with a bit of luck, we'll start to see some decent uses for Thunderbolt, short of the standard DisplayPort connection, in the very near future.

  • Apple says "stay tuned" for other Final Cut Studio apps, shows The Loop screenshots

At the FCPUG SuperMeet at NAB yesterday, Apple unveiled Final Cut Pro X, the latest iteration of its non-linear video editing application. The new version includes such features as color management, background rendering, improved keyword and metadata support and a magnetic timeline that lets you move clips around without trim collisions with other clips. Apple confirmed the application would launch in June for a rock bottom price of US$299.

Talking to The Loop, Apple also confirmed that this NAB presentation was just a sneak peek of Final Cut Pro. The Cupertino company promised there was more to come for the other applications in the Final Cut Pro Studio Suite, which include Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. Speaking of sneak peek, The Loop was able to get its hands on some official screenshots of the application in action. We embedded one above, and you can point your browser to The Loop's website to get a closer look at the UI of this upcoming version of Final Cut Pro. Anyone looking forward to June so that they can get their hands on FCP X?

  • Weather app uses notifications to display info on home screen

One area that Apple needs to address is the iOS home screen, which uses icons and badges to display information instead of the more informative widgets used by its competitor, Android. While many apps resign themselves to this limitation, a weather app by International Travel Weather Calculator pushes what is possible with a clever use of the iOS notification system.

We are all familar with the red iOS badge that displays the number of missed calls or unread emails on your home screen. The Fahrenheit - Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen app takes advantage of this notification system to display the temperature on your home screen. It's a clever use of Apple's built-in system that does not run afoul of the App Store guidelines.

The rest of the weather application is feature-rich and includes location-based weather forecasts, support for multiple cities, astronomical data, like sunrise and sunset times, and extra weather information, like rainfall amounts, humidity and wind direction. An in-app upgrade lets you add rain radar, satellite maps and wind charts to the application. The Fahrenheit - Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen app is available for US$0.99 from the App Store. Check it out and let us know what you think.

  • Mozy releases iOS client

There are any number of online file storage and backup options these days -- Amazon's new Cloud Drive, perennial favorite Dropbox and Mozy, which I've been using for simple backups. So it's good to hear that Mozy has now released an iOS client that will allow you to view your files stored on its servers.

The app has some limitations, unfortunately. Most notably that it's restricted to the US and Canada, although a worldwide version has been promised. Also, it only works with MozyHome accounts (a version for MozyPro is on the way), and can't decrypt any backups you've encrypted with your own private key.

If you use Mozy in North America, give the free iPhone or iPad app a try and let us know how you get on with it in comments.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Look Again!

Many games on the App Store seem to emphasize gaming expertise more than anything else. Either you need to know the genre of the game you're playing, or your fingers just need to be fast enough to win. Look Again! is an interesting contrast to either of those scenarios because it challenges your brain's pattern recognition skills more than anything else. You're given a graphic consisting of two design elements, and it's up to you to figure out which two elements make up the graphic. Like all good puzzlers, things start simple but get increasingly more complicated, even as your brain trains itself to better recognize what's going on.

The presentation's not incredible (the colors are a little weird), but it serves its purpose. There are over 250 levels, full Game Center integration, and the app was recently updated to work on both the iPhone and the iPad. Look Again! is currently available for US$1.99 on the App Store. If you want an iPhone game that runs at a different speed, check it out.

  • Postagram creates postcards from Instagram photos

We've been fans of Instagram for a while, so we were keen to see what would happen when its developers opened Instagram's API to others. While there have been a few toe-in-the-water experiments, the first really interesting idea we've seen is Postagram. The service allows you to turn any Instagram image into a 300 dpi postcard for just US$0.99, posted to anywhere in the world. It'll be delivered within 2-5 days in the USA and will take a bit longer to get elsewhere. Sounds like a bargain.

Download the app now and give it a try if you already have Instagram installed. Postagram has a special launch offer that gives you your first postcard for free. Perfect for sending real postcards to your parents and anyone who isn't quite up there with you on the cutting edge of e-postcard delivery this summer.

  • Apple updates Dictionary app in Lion, still has a way to go

AppleInsider has spotlighted some improvements Apple has made to the built-in Dictionary app in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. Among the new features, the actual dictionary files used in the app have been updated from the second edition (2005) of the New Oxford American English Dictionary to the third (2010) edition. The third (2010) edition of the British Oxford Dictionary of English is also included along with the British Oxford Thesaurus of English. The Shogakukan Japanese dictionaries and Apple's own dictionary of trademark and product names have been updated as well.

The app now also uses a two-pane display, which makes it easier to navigate between words or phrases. Previously, you would be presented with only a list and have to click back and forth to the list in order to select a new word. Another welcome feature is a pop-up definition preview when a word is searched for using Spotlight. Now, hovering over the word in a Spotlight list displays the full definitions of the word instead of just the first few words of the definition. Apple has also added a new multi-touch trackpad command to its built-in dictionary. Now clicking on a word using three fingers will open up the in-line dictionary panel for that word or open that word in the dictionary app itself (depending on your Dictionary settings).

As a writer, I geek out over any improvements Apple makes with its dictionary features. However, I will not rest until Apple adds access to the excellent OneLook Reverse Dictionary from within the Dictionary app itself (much the same way you can access Wikipedia within the app). Sometimes you just want to see a list of words describing "red fruit" without having to manually think of every such word; alternatively, you may know the definition of a word, but not the word itself (such as "urge to travel"). Besides adding a reverse dictionary, I would also love to be able to bookmark favorite words and create word lists where I can group similar words together for quick access. For example, it would be nice to create a list of words or phrases I could possibly use to describe someone who is angrily shouting. I guess I can only hope Apple reads my words.

  • Flock comes to the end of the road as support ceases

    Flock support withdrawn

Flock, the original social web browser, has been marked for termination. Originally released back in 2005 and powered by a Firefox core, Flock brought social to the browser by integrating with Flickr, del.icio.us (as it was at the time) and a whole host of blogging services. Later, with the social networking revolution, Flock cozied up with a plethora of platforms, including the usual suspects: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Flock moved to the much faster Chromium core late last year, bringing greater speed (especially on the Mac), which was by then, an important factor in the "browser wars." Unfortunately for Flock, it wasn't enough to combat the new Chromium-powered social browser upstart RockMelt, which was well funded and had a lot of hype behind it.

In January of this year, Zynga swooped in and bought the team behind Flock in a talent acquisition. Unfortunately for Flock, that didn't include technology, CEO Shawn Hardin or the Flock.com domain, so the writing was on the wall for the now struggling browser.

Today, Flock.com has a notice stating that support for Flock will be withdrawn as of April 26, bringing an end to the social browser, and suggesting users look to Chrome or Firefox. Although not a Mac-specific browser, Flock added something extra to the browser choice on OS X, so it's sad to see it slinking off into the sunset, even if we do have RockMelt.

  • Final Cut Pro X announced at NAB SuperMeet

As widely rumored, Apple's Peter Steinauer took the stage at the SuperMeet during NAB in Las Vegas to introduce the latest version of Final Cut, Final Cut Pro X. The new video editing app (last revised in July of 2009) adds full 64-bit compatibility with a full rewrite of the platform. Final Cut Pro X will be shipping in June. You can download it via the Mac App Store! And the price? US$299 -- that's truly astonishing. (We don't yet know if that's just the editor itself, or also includes the capabilities of Motion and Color... but we're inclined to believe the former.)

The new version includes improved media management and improved image quality built on "modern foundations," with top-to-bottom color management and a new look. FCP X features resolution-independent playback all the way from SD up to 2K and 4K formats. It now leverages Grand Central Dispatch to take advantage of all cores on the Mac plus the GPU. The crowd goes wild, especially as Steinauer suggests that the ever-popular render bar will now be a thing of the past.

Other new features (via @fcpsupermeet and Photography Bay)...

  • Blackmagic announcing a free version of DaVinci Resolve

This week at NAB 2011, Blackmagic Design has announced version 8 of the very high-end dedicated color-grading solution DaVinci Resolve. The upgrade brings XML support, multi-layer timelines, curve grading, noise reduction, stabilization, automatic 3D matching and OpenCL acceleration to the solution, making it a substantial upgrade.

Unfortunately, if you don't have an equally high-end paycheck then the US$29,995 price for the full system is probably prohibitively expensive, and even the software-only version costing US$995 may stretch many people's budgets. If you're in that boat, Blackmagic has some good news for you: it's releasing a free version in the form of DaVinci Resolve 8 Lite to "help promote the art of color correction."

  • New Humble bundle offers Frozenbyte games, pay what you want

The folks behind the extremely popular Humble Indie bundles are at it again -- this time, they've assembled a "Humble Frozenbyte Bundle," featuring a pack of games from Finnish game developer Frozenbyte. The real centerpiece here is Trine, an excellent physics-based puzzler/platformer that's done well both on PC and on the consoles, but the other titles (Shadowgrounds, sequel Shadowgrounds Survivor and a preview of a game called Splot) aren't bad either. There's a game prototype in the mix called Jack Claw -- that's a game that Frozenbyte eventually canceled without release, but buyers of this bundle will get to play it anyway (on Windows, that is).

As with the other Humble bundles, all of these games are Mac-compatible and DRM-free, and the price is pay-what-you-will, with money going either to Frozenbyte or to the EFF or Child's Play. The suggested price cost of the games separately is $50 (which would still be a great deal for four games), but you can give whatever you want to whoever you want and still get the bundle for yourself.

On a quick platform-specific note, too, Mac users aren't being quite as well represented this time around -- they're paying, on average, way less than Linux users, and taking the smallest piece of the pie out of the three platforms. If you do buy the bundle (and the games, with the exception of Jack Claw, are compatible on any and all platforms anyway), make sure to show a little Mac pride over there, and prove that among the three OSes, Mac users are the most willing to pony up for great software.

  • MacTech Boot Camp revving up for Dallas, coming to Boston, LA and Chicago later this year

Our friends at the MacTech Boot Camp series of conferences for Mac consultants and IT techs are rolling right into 2011. They've got a session planned in Dallas for April 27, and then they're headed up to Boston for another event on May 18.

We're told there's still room at the Dallas event, and the usual pricing has been lowered to $395, so you TUAW readers can follow this special discount link to see the show for just $295. Sessions include a packed schedule of panels and demos, lots and lots of networking, and included meals and refreshments -- if you've never been to one of these and do any consulting or IT work with Macs, they're definitely worth seeing.

You can even get certified at the events -- Apple Certification Testing is taking place the day before each session, and there's also a proctor-moderated group study session included before that, so you can do some last-minute cramming with your fellow pupils. Testing for MacTech Boot Camp attendees is only $199, which is significantly cheaper than usual.

Finally, early bird registration is still underway for the sessions later on this year -- the conference will be in Los Angeles on July 27, and in Chicago on August 31. If you're in either of those cities, definitely consider attending.

TUAW is a media sponsor of the MacTech Boot Camp conferences.
