  • 1,800 iPads on the way to Ottawa Hospital

The Canadian Broadcasting Company is reporting that the Ottawa Hospital, which already has about 500 Apple tablets being used by health-care providers, has recently ordered another 1,800 iPads to replace paper medical charts.

Doctors at the facility currently use iPads to examine X-rays, write prescriptions and take notes during patient visits. The devices carry patient medical histories, triage information, allergy data and allow doctors to order treatment while they're still with the patient.

The hospital hopes to offset the cost of the additional iPads through replacements of old equipment, increased productivity and a reduction in errors. Ottawa Hospital CIO Dale Potter, who proposed the iPad plan to the hospital, noted that for handwritten doctor orders, "15 or 20 percent of those are missing information, or are illegible, and require human intervention." It is expected that the devices, which will arrive by July, will reduce the amount of rework required on orders that have been entered incorrectly by hand.

Ottawa Hospital is working with Select Start Studios, a Canadian development firm that created the Ottawa Hospital EMR (electronic medical record) Client app. The app is designed with patient information security in mind, and no data is stored locally on the iPad in case the device is stolen or lost.

  • iPads surfing the web outnumber Linux machines

Pingdom has pointed out some interesting stats culled from browser data. It appears that there are now more iPads surfing the web than Linux-based machines.

The chart above features stats from Statcounter and are based on visitor statistics averaged from over 3 million websites. As you can see the top operating systems in the US for the first 19 days of April are Windows with 82 percent of the market, Mac OS X with 14.9 percent of the market, then iOS with 1.18 percent of the market, followed by Linux with 0.71 percent of the market.

What's interesting about these stats is that the iOS market share only includes iPads according to Statcounter. iPhones, iPod touches, and other smartphones were left out. It was only just last year that all iOS-based devices claimed 1.13 percent of all browsing platforms compared to just 0.85% for Linux. Now just one iOS device has achieved the same thing.

  • Apple submits patent application for magnetic and sound-based peer-to-peer technology

A patent discovered by Patently Apple suggests Apple may use a magnetic compass and supersonic tone technology to share data between your iPhone and other electronic devices. In this new peer-to-per communication system, a magnetic compass is used to monitor the magnetic signature of a compatible electronic device. Once these devices are close together, they could automatically recognize one another and share information seamlessly without user intervention.

In another scenario, a device with a speaker could output an encoded supersonic tone that changes the local magnetic field. This change in the magnetic field can be detected by the receiving device. The supersonic tone is not audible to human ears, but may drive your dog bonkers. Once the tone is detected by the compass on the portable device, the two devices will open a connection and share contact information, images, media and other files. Similar to a MAC address for a WiFi-enabled device, these signatures may be unique to each device. Once detected, the signatures could be stored and recognized for later use.

  • Apple issues minor update to iBooks

Apple has issued a minor update to its iBooks app for iPhone and iPad. Besides a host of stability and performance improvements, the 1.2.2 update addresses issues playing video included with enhanced books from the iBookstore, resolves a problem where some books open with a different font than expected and makes iBooks more responsive when navigating books with many items in their table of contents. Now about those other things ...

  • Rumor: iPhone "4S" prototypes with A5 chips being tested by game developers

Earlier today 9to5Mac reported on a prototype Mac Pro that might be in the offing, and now the blog also has word that iPhone 4s outfitted with Apple's A5 chips have been seeded with developers at certain "high-level gaming outfits."

As noted in the post, these prototypes are not necessarily indicative of what we'll see in September, which is when the next-generation iPhone is expected to appear. Instead, these are devices that are designed to let the developers prepare their game titles for the iPhone 5. The source of the information called the device an iPhone 4S, although that name might be nothing more than internal nomenclature.

Other hardware improvements would be expected in any future iPhone, including a rumored 8-megapixel camera and the capability to be used as a true GSM/CDMA "world phone." The A5 is currently used in the iPad 2, and is a dual-core high-performance system on a chip. The graphics capabilities of the A5 are outstanding, with a graphics processing unit touted as nine times as powerful as the one in the original iPad.

Apparently, Apple's reasoning for seeding the developers with the high-powered hardware is that the company wishes to make speedy game performance a selling point for the next-generation device. What better way to do that than to take a few best-selling, graphics-intensive games and supercharge them prior to the launch of the iPhone 5?

  • News.me for iPad launches today as a paid social magazine

News.me, the latest iPad news reader, wants to outdo apps like Flipboard and Zite by being "smarter" about the content it delivers. The app is free, and you can use it for a week, but after that it is US$0.99 a week or $34.99 a year.

To use the app you need a Twitter account. When you log in, you'll get a list of people you follow, and you'll be able to see what they are reading. You also will get a list of famous twitterers like Arianna Huffington and Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times. You can add or subtract from the list at any time.

Rather than a regular news app, like Pulse News, News.me depends almost completely on Twitter for sources. There is also a Big News button that gets you more traditional news, and in my tests today I was mostly seeing news from Reuters. People without an iPad can get a daily digest emailed to them. The layout of stories is well done and easy to read. All the on-screen buttons make sense, and there is a minimum of clutter.

It will take time to see if this app makes sense as a way to get news. I've been very happy with Zite, which is free, and allows you to mix Twitter based content with more traditional material. A big test for News.me will be when people use up their free week. Will they sign up, or let it lapse for the free apps that compete?

There are some big guns behind News.me, including the New York Times; the paper helped design the app in its Media Lab. Success will greatly depend on just how smart the app is at delivering relevant news to your iPad. I'd suggest our readers take the free trial and let us know what you think, and more important, if you plan to sign on for a subscription.

  • Apple's cloud music service ready for launch

A report out of Reuters claims Apple is set to launch its online music storage service. The service would allow users to store their iTunes content in the cloud and access it from an internet-connected device. Apple has yet to secure the licenses for the new service and is in the process of negotiating with the music labels before the service's big launch. No word on whether changes to MobileMe are included with this upcoming launch.

Apple will reportedly beat Google to the punch and launch its music storage and streaming service ahead of the search giant. Hints of Google's foray into music streaming have appeared in the latest builds of Android, but the rollout of this service is reportedly delayed.

Amazon has beaten both Apple and Google with its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player service which lets Amazon users store their music library and other files in the cloud. Amazon's Cloud player can play back these stored music files using a desktop web browser or an Android device. You can use a relatively easy workaround to access Cloud Player on your iOS device as we described here.

  • Next-generation Mac Pro rumored to feature rack mount, stackable drives

If a rumor posted on 9 to 5 Mac has any validity, the Mac Pro may be the next member of the Apple family to receive an updated design.

The top-of-the-line Mac Pro has been somewhat neglected in the design department, as the current design debuted with the Power Mac G5 in June of 2003. Since then, the Mac Pro has received processor, RAM, and storage updates, but the exterior design is basically the same. 9 to 5 Mac is reporting that a Mac Pro prototype is now in testing that features a narrower (just about 5 inches wide) and shorter (about 19 inches) design that could fit into a standard server rack.

This makes sense in that a rack-mountable Mac Pro could easily replace the gaping hole in the product line left by the discontinued Xserve. If the rumored design could be placed vertically for "under desk" use or horizontally rack-mounted as a server, the power of the Mac Pro could be harnessed for high-end professional work as well as for organization-wide applications.

The rumor says that the new Mac Pro features stacked drives with two drives per sled for a higher storage density than is currently available. The sleds can be configured either with SSDs or conventional hard drives. It's expected that the Mac Pro would be a 3U (5.25 inch) thick device in the rack-mounted configuration.

We think 9 to 5 Mac has another good point -- a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt, Blu-ray, and a new design would be a perfect complement to the new version of Final Cut Pro that's arriving in June.

  • Apple has the "least green" data centers

Apple has come in last place among a list of tech companies in the latest Greenpeace tech report How Dirty is Your Data? [PDF]. While Apple has made some pretty big strides over the last few years in trying to eliminate environmentally unfriendly chemicals from their products, Apple placed last in this list due to its heavy reliance on coal power at its data centers.

The report compares energy consumption and sources made by Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter, IBM, Microsoft, HP, Akamai, Amazon and Yahoo. In it Greenpeace points out that Apple's new North Carolina data center, which is set to open this year and will be supposedly be primarily used for cloud-based computing services, will triple Apple's energy usage and use the same amount of energy as 80,000 US homes. Of that energy, 62% will be provide by coal (one of the dirtiest energy sources) while 32% of it will be provided by nuclear power.

This isn't the first time Greenpeace has expressed concern over Apple's energy footprint regarding cloud computing. In March of last year, Greenpeace also expressed concern about the North Carolina data center that runs on "dirty coal power."

  • Kickstart the Flow: a capacitive touch screen paintbrush

It must be stylus month on Kickstarter, with first the Cosmonaut and now the Flow appearing on the funding website. Like the Nomad Brush, the Flow by Joystickers is modeled after a paintbrush. The Flow has capacitive bristles rather than the traditional foam tip to more closely match the tactile experience of painting with real paint.

One of the things that's always frustrated me when painting on the iPad is that the friction from both my finger and any of the styluses I've tried isn't quite right. It can work very well for sketching but when I open up Artrage and start using a paint tool there always seems to be a bit of a tactile disconnect from what I'm doing. A paintbrush that works with the touch screen seems like the best possible solution short of pulling out real paint and using your iPad as a canvas -- which we definitely do not recommend.

  • iPhone said to be tops in worldwide revenue

Pretty impressive. The young upstart iPhone (just about 4 years old) has just dethroned Nokia in revenue. That's the word from Strategy Analytics today, as the research firm looked at mobile phone revenues in January through March.

Nokia has been a consistent revenue leader around the world by generally selling less expensive feature phones. Nokia recently joined forces with Microsoft and is adopting Windows Phone 7 software for its smartphones.

Apple iPhone revenue rose to $11.9 billion in the last quarter, while Nokia slipped to $9.4 billion. Apple, AT&T and Verizon have also reported robust iPhone sales to Wall Street. Other analysts claimed Apple surpassed Nokia in the Winter 2010 quarter, but Nokia dismissed that report at the time.

  • Mumbai surgeons perform knee surgery replacements using an iPod touch

The newest winner in the "there's an app for that" sweepstakes has to go to the DASH app and its supporting system. It's putting the iPod touch at the heart of a system that allows surgeons to make it easier to do hip and knee replacement surgery. This medical system, developed by Smith & Nephew along with Brainlab, has allowed doctors at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai to effectively perform three knee replacement surgeries.

The system comes in a rolling box with a precision camera and everything needed to take exact measurements and landmark registrations critical to such an operation. The iPod touch is slipped into a case and the software does the measuring and computing. Without this assistance, highly trained surgeons would have to "eyeball" measurements that the DASH does for them. This is said to reduce the learning curve and, at least in India, lessens the certification process for surgeons performing replacement procedures. Operating times are also reduced. This system is currently awaiting FDA approval in the US.

You can download the free DASH iOS app, which provides movies covering specific functions and operations of the DASH system, or watch the remarkable video on the next page that demonstrates the entire process.

  • Apple confirms LTE iPhone is at least one generation away

During its earnings conference call, Apple re-confirmed it is not adopting the current generation of LTE chipsets in its iPhone handsets. According to Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, Apple would have to redesign the iPhone to accommodate the first generation LTE chipsets used in smartphones such as the Verizon Wireless' HTC Thunderbolt. Apple is not willing to make that concession at this point and will wait for future generation LTE hardware before it adopts this 4G technology.

For iPhone fans, this means an LTE-enabled smartphone from Apple is at least a generation away. The iPhone 5 may hit this year, but it will support current 3G technology and possibly the 4G HSPA+ technology that AT&T is rolling out on its network. Folks looking forward to downloading full-length HD movies in one minute will likely have to wait until 2012 for this high-speed connectivity to land on their iPhone.

  • Verizon iPhone selling faster than the HTC Thunderbolt

Earlier this month, a research report from BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk concluded that the HTC Thunderbolt was outselling the Verizon iPhone. This report was based on anecdotal evidence gathered from sales employees and their impressions of which handset was selling faster. Needless to say, the methodology behind this analysis led us to be skeptical of these results; as it turns out, that skepticism was well-founded.

During Verizon's earnings conference call, the wireless carrier confirmed it sold 2.2 million iPhones in the six weeks the handset was available on the network. The carrier also confirmed the 4G-enabled HTC Thunderbolt sold 260,000 in the two weeks it was available. On average, then, Verizon was selling about 360,000 iPhones and 130,000 Thunderbolts per week.

This is a whopping 230K difference in units sold that favors the iPhone. If you stretch out the Thunderbolt sales to six weeks and assume sales continue at the rate noted above (not necessarily the case, as sales would tend to spike at the beginning of the window and trend down, but giving the Thunderbolt the benefit of the doubt) Verizon would have sold 2.2M iPhones and only 780K HTC Thunderbolt handsets.

  • iHub 2 cease and desist notice issued: We called it

    Well, color me unsurprised.

Remember the TUAW post from Tuesday about M.I.C Gadget's iHub 2, which is a small 4-port USB hub that features a cool glowing Apple logo? In that post, M.I.C Gadget's iHub 2 looks like Apple lawsuit bait, I conjectured that it wouldn't take too long for Apple's legal team to mail out the cease and desist notice.

This morning, we received a number of emails from people who had ordered the iHub 2. The manufacturer has contacted them with the news that Apple has "warned" M.I.C Gadget to stop selling the device:

    Shocking! Astounding! Completely predictable!

My feeling is that "working hard to rectify this" means that "we're trying to send out everything we've sold while making promises to Apple that we'll never make Apple-logoed products again to avoid getting sued." After making the iHub 2 and the Steve Jobs action figure, M.I.C Gadget will probably be the focus of the Eye of Sauron Apple Legal for a long, long time.

By the way, the video that accompanied the iHub post has been pulled as well.

Thanks to all of the iHub buyers who sent us this tip.

  • Verizon and AT&T combine to sell 5.8 million iPhones in Q1 2011

This morning Verizon released its quarterly earnings for Q1 2011. While the wireless carrier did not reveal its iPhone sales figure in the press release, its earnings conference call confirms Verizon sold 2.2 million iPhones in its first six weeks of sales (compared to the 3.6 million reported by AT&T for the first three months of 2011, a 2x longer period). Combined, Verizon and AT&T sold 5.8 million iPhones, which means that total US sales account for about 30% of the 18.6 million Apple sold worldwide in the quarter. Apple COO/acting CEO Tim Cook mentioned on yesterday's Apple earnings call that US sales were up 155% year-over-year, and iPhone sales in greater China were up 250% versus the year-ago quarter (both leading the curve of 113% growth in total sales).

According to AT&T, its iPhone churn rate remained steady in the 1st quarter, which suggests most Verizon iPhone sales come from current Verizon Wireless customers who waited patiently for the carrier to land the iPhone. It will be interesting to see how these numbers play out over the next year and a half. A growing number of AT&T iPhone customers will come off their current 2-year contracts and have a choice of carriers. Will the Verizon iPhone lead to a mass exodus from AT&T, as theorized, or will AT&T continue to hold its own? How many would-be carrier jumpers will wait for the hypothetical autumn release of the iPhone 5?

  • iPhone apps that beat Apple's default apps
    Dropbox, better than Apple?

There's a nice little article over at Apple Matters about how, wonderful though Apple might be, there are still some things that others do better - in particular, certain apps for your iOS devices.

Their list starts with the US$1.99 Instacast, which indeed does a better job of managing and finding new podcasts than you can do yourself by searching through the iTunes Music Store on your iPhone.

Next comes PhotoSync, also $1.99, which adds wireless syncing for your photos between your iPhone and desktop. If it only synced everything else wirelessly, I'd be first in the queue to buy it.

Finally, they list Stash Pro, the image management app for iOS devices, which seems a little expensive to me at $3.99, but it does allow you to download images directly on your iOS device from websites, and you can add keywords, titles and ratings to images.

My personal list of apps that I use because they're better than any Apple offering starts with Dropbox. It simplifies my mobile life to the point where it's a pleasure to access files on the go.

What apps do you use because they're better than anything Apple can offer? Let us know in comments.

  • Palua allows you to quickly switch between standard and Apple function keys

    Palua

If you're an Apple keyboard or MacBook user, you'll know how useful the F1-F12 function keys can be when mapped to Apple functions such as brightness control, Expose and play controls. But what happens when you need the function keys to behave in a non-Apple mapped way? Sure you can hold down the "fn" key, but that can get a bit tedious. You could also switch the Apple and standard functions using Keyboard Preferences, leaving Apple functions under the control of the "fn" key, but again, how often do you really need the standard function keys under normal circumstances?

This is where the tiny utility Palua, from the folks at Molowa, comes in. It's a minuscule little app that sits in your menu bar and lets you switch between standard function and Apple keys with a quick Cmd+Opt+Tab or via the menu bar. Once you're done with the standard keys, just press Cmd+Opt+Tab again, and everything will be put back to normal - simple and effective.

If you're a photo or video editor, someone who works a lot with custom keyboard maps or you just need the standard F1-F12 keys every now and again, then the US$0.99 Palua, available from the Mac App Store, could be just the ticket.

  • Amnesty International releases iOS game to raise money and awareness for human rights

Bulletproof is a new game that's out on the App Store right now. The premise is interesting and a little macabre, as you're tasked with stopping bullets from a firing squad by touching in the right places on screen. I like it, actually. The action starts slow and eventually becomes pretty frantic. The simple, but effective, graphics keep you on your toes (or fingers, as the case may be).

But the most interesting thing about this app is the story behind it. It was actually commissioned by Amnesty International from developers Mobigame, and it's being sold to raise awareness of human rights violations from around the world. All proceeds from Bulletproof are going to Amnesty International (minus, presumably, Apple's standard 30 percent cut), and the game itself is a pretty effective way of getting the message across.

This isn't the only instance of charity organizations looking to video games to raise money for their cause. OneBigGame has been doing just that on iOS and other platforms. But this is a solid cause and a solid app as well.

  • TUAW's Daily App: NBA JAM

Yes, the classic NBA JAM title has been released by EA for iOS, and it's got everything you remember from the old console version: the crazy announcers, the quick games and even some kooky special characters. The iPhone version was released a little while ago for US$4.99, but this week EA has added a free version to try out as well as an iPad version for $9.99.

The UI is a little clunky with virtual buttons just laid over the screen in the iPhone version, but it works well enough, and the graphics look as good as the modern version on the Wii. There is local multiplayer via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but there's no Game Center integration or online play, which is too bad. Still, it's a quality port of the recent console title, and as I said, all of the fun stuff you remember about the old game, including the over-the-top dunks and announcer Tim Kitzrow. If you missed out on this one when it came to consoles, it's probably worth picking up for iOS.

  • Apple planning May event to celebrate its 10-year retail anniversary

    Legendary first Apple retail store

Get your glad rags out, because it looks like Apple's preparing to celebrate the 10th birthday of its first retail stores at the end of next month.

Employees have been told they can't request any vacation time in late May, possibly because Apple's planning some sort of event to mark the anniversary. The first Apple Retail Stores launched on May 19, 2001 in McLean, Virginia's Tyson's Corner Mall and at the Galleria in Glendale, California. The Glendale store has even achieved cult status now with the store number designation 001.

It is possible that the holiday blackout is due to a new product launch; new Sandy Bridge iMacs are due, and there's always the iPhone 5. However, the iMac doesn't seem special enough to stop all staff going on holiday, and the iPhone 5 now seems more likely for September. The most recent holiday blackouts were for the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPad 2.

If Apple is planning a birthday party for its retail stores, will you be going along? How do you think Apple should mark the anniversary? Let us know in the comments.

    (Edited to fix store name.)

  • Untrackerd wipes stored location data on your jailbroken iPhone

The iPhone and iPad seem to be storing location data about your travels using cell tower information. Whether you believe that Apple is secretly spying on you or just storing the locations of cell towers for some purpose, such as speedier connections to said towers, if you don't like it, you now have an option. Ryan Petrich, a renowned jailbreak app developer, has released a free little utility called "untrackerd" that runs in the background and continuously cleans stored location history data.

You will, of course, have to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPad to install the app from Cydia, but if you're not happy about the possibility of your iPhone or iPad's location history being accessible, then head to Cydia now and install the 37 KB app from the BigBoss repository for peace of mind.

  • iPad explorations with Qwiki

    Qwiki

The developers behind the Qwiki website have produced a pretty cool iPad app version of the site. The app looks like a great way to experience Qwiki's narrated-encyclopaedia version of the world, offering location-sensitive lookups and making full use of the touch-capabilities of the iPad.

"Qwiki's fundamental belief has always been that media consumption is moving off the desktop," says co-founder and CEO Doug Imbruce. The company, which recently raised $9 million in funding, has released the app for free.

  • Possible fix for font issues in 10.6.7

Late last month, a troubling font issue came to light after Apple rolled out version 10.6.7 of Mac OS X. The update appeared to cause problems with the printing and PDF handling of OpenType PostScript fonts. Apple has not officially acknowledged the problem, but a growing thread on Apple's discussion boards details the issues Mac users are experiencing.

Good news for those affected by this font problem as forum member KJK555 claims to have a fix. KJK555 has released an installation package that replaces the affected 10.6.7 ATS.framework binaries with the previous 10.6.6 versions. The ATS.framework is involved in the font layout and management of Apple Type Services

Before you jump for joy, the initial success rate of this fix is mixed. Some folks claim font issues in apps such as LiveType disappear, while others are still reporting problems with Adobe apps like Acrobat distiller.

If you are plagued by this problem and don't want to wait for Apple to roll out an official update, this solution may be worth a try. As always, proceed at your own risk, as there is always the chance of a negative outcome when you start mucking around with system components, such as fonts and printing. If you do bravely forge ahead and apply the fix, give us a shout in the comments and let us know how it works for you.

    Thanks, Laurie!

  • Greenwich, Conn., Apple Store closed temporarily due to flooding

A mishap at a Greenwich, Conn., Apple Store resulted in the activation of the sprinkler system and significant water damage to the building. A cleaning crew working Tuesday night accidentally dislodged a sprinkler head, which activated the sprinkler system and fire alarm. Within minutes, the city's fire department responded to the call, but the main floor and two sub-basements were already flooded.

The store was closed and initially determined to be unfit for occupancy due to possible damage to the electrical wiring in the building. The building was deemed safe by Greenwich building inspectors on Wednesday, but remains closed indefinitely while Apple begins the arduous cleanup process. Store employees would not comment on the loss of electronic equipment from the flooding, but it is expected to be extensive.

This is not the first mishap for the beleaguered store, which opened in 2009. The Greenwich store made headlines in December 2010 when a break-in resulted in the loss of hardware estimated to be worth more than $10,000.

  • Dark Horse Digital coming to iOS April 27

The wait is finally almost over, Dark Horse Digital will be releasing their iOS app on April 27! I love reading comics on the iPad, the form-factor and experience is perfect. In fact, I prefer it to paper comics. However, while Marvel, DC Comics and some other publishers have been adding more and more issues from their libraries to a number of applications, such as Comixology, Dark Horse has been notably absent.

The Dark Horse app is something I've been following pretty closely for a while now. Originally, it was slated to be released in January, but they weren't finished, so they postponed the launch and promised to make it up to excited fans. That's a promise they're making good on by including the first issue of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction bundled with the app, and they'll be giving away a few other titles if they can get enough people to subscribe to the newsletter before it launches.

  • BET's 106 & Park app impresses with promotion and social network integration

There were a few interesting apps demonstrated at the LA AppShow last night, but the one that most interested me was an app that Black Entertainment Television's Brandon Lucas showed off: the official app for the network's 106 & Park music video show. BET teamed up with developers Bottle Rocket to make it, and I don't think I've seen a more interesting combination of old school media (in this case, a popular cable network) and new school mobile programming.

106 & Park is a daily music video request/pop culture show. Lucas described it as the BET version of MTV's Total Request Live (which itself was the MTV version of Casey Kasem's radio countdown show). 106 & Park (named for the original studio location in Harlem) runs for two hours every weekday, and Lucas said his company wanted to design an app for their very mobile-aware viewers that could be used not only to promote the show, but also to drive engagement with the network at large and to "go for a whole new level of interactivity" with the way these things are done.

So what they decided to do was deep dive into how their viewers watched the show and interacted with each other. From that came a whole bunch of fascinating features, from some really surprising social media integration to even a "fame lottery," which allows their on-air personalities to directly connect with app users.

  • Countdown to the last few hours before The Cosmonaut stylus launch

If you're an artist and you like to paint with your iPad, then you know how much nicer it can be to use a capacitive stylus rather then your finger. While there are already a number of styluses that work with iOS devices on the market, Studio Neat has decided there's room for one more. The Cosmonaut is differentiating itself by using a wide-grip design inspired by dry-erase markers, which Studio Neat argues is a more appropriate analog for the way we use an iPad than a pen or pencil.

Studio Neat's first big product, the Glif iPhone stand, had a very successful launch thanks to backers on Kickstarter who were willing to fund the manufacturing costs to get the Glif off the ground. The Cosmonaut is being funded the same way. The original goal was to have $50,000 pledged by the end of the Kickstarter campaign, and right now -- with only a few hours to go -- they've raised more then $125,000.

If the Cosmonaut looks like your dream stylus, you should hurry over to Kickstarter and pledge $25 or more to reserve one in the first batch, which they hope to be shipping in June.

The Cosmonaut looks like a pleasure to hold, and I definitely plan on picking one up at some point.

  • Red Giant Software debuts two iOS camera apps, gives away Plastic Bullet today

If you're familiar with professional video production, then you've probably seen the popular video post-production applications and plug-ins that Red Giant Software makes. • iTunes servers appear to be wonky today

It started with a few tweets and progressed to our own internal tests, and it would appear as though Apple's iTunes servers are, at some level, not working properly. For me, it began with an all-too-familiar timeout while trying to update apps. Then I tried to download the currently-free Plastic Bullet app. Later, when we started testing, it appeared that the issue had turned into a sign-in issue with authentication servers refusing the connection.

Steve and Chris in Colorado, meanwhile, are seeing slow downloads but are able to log in and download apps. The issue appears in iTunes and Mac App Store. Let us know if you're seeing this in the comments.

Update: There's no shortage of Apple Support threads on this. Here, here and here. Some are saying it's back up, and no doubt, if Apple is performing maintenance, it'll be back in a bit.

Update 2: This appears to be affecting iTunes Connect.

Update 3: As of 9:20 ET, it appears things are starting to stabilize with Apple's servers. Both I and Megan up in Pennsylvania were able to authenticate, however Megan is getting errors stating she already purchased an app when she hadn't bought it yet.

  • 20th Century Fox talks about the success of Angry Birds Rio

I attended an event called the LA AppShow last night here in Santa Monica, CA, and I saw seven demos of various apps that are seeing significant success on the App Store. Matt McMahon from 20th Century Fox was there, and while his company didn't publish the actual app in question, he's certainly seen plenty of success; he worked closely with Rovio on the creation of Angry Birds Rio, the movie tie-in that has nabbed 20 million downloads on the App Store in just 20 days of release, and has helped send the Rio animated movie to number one at the box office.

McMahon didn't talk about the actual development of Angry Birds Rio -- most of the technical work was left to Rovio, who McMahon called the "best in breed" on the App Store. But McMahon and his company did make an interesting decision, and that was to pin a large arm of their marketing for a huge movie on a little company from Finland with a popular app about birds and pigs.

  • Apple announces record revenue for 2nd quarter FY11

Ahead of today's 5 PM conference call, Apple released its earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal 2011 (otherwise known as the first calendar quarter). Profit number: $5.99B in the quarter. Total revenue for the quarter is US$24.6 billion, versus 13.5B year-over-year. Earnings per diluted share comes in at $6.40, versus $3.33 last year. Forecasting $23B revenue for the next quarter.

Product sales numbers rolled in as follows: 28% up year over year in Macs with 3.76M sold in the quarter, 18.6M iPhones (113% unit growth), 9.02M iPods (including the iPod touch) and 4.69M iPads, including the iPad 2. (The number on iPad sales disclosed via the Samsung lawsuit was thought to be only counting the original iPad, but it may have included the iPad 2, which was supply-constrained.) We were expecting a big Mac number based on the predictions from Gene Munster and sales data from NPD.

You can compare and contrast the actual numbers against the predictions made by Wall Street analysts and top stock bloggers via the compilation done over at Apple 2.0/Fortune Tech.

We'll be listening in to the conference call and liveblogging all the fun -- join in!

  • iPad held 85% market share in 2010 according to ABI Research

ABI Research's 2010 analysis of the media tablet market reveals the iPad grabbed a respectable 85 percent market share. Trailing far behind the iPad was the Samsung Galaxy Tab with an eight percent market share and the Archos Internet tablets with a mere two percent market share. There three vendors accounted for 95 percent of all media tablets sold in 2010.

These figures are not surprising considering Apple's jump on the competition. Launched in early 2010, the iPad kicked off this tablet revolution and other manufacturers have struggled to catch up. According to ABI, tablets will continue to hit retail shelves in large numbers. The market research company predicts manufacturers will ship 40 to 50 million tablets worldwide in 2011.

With an increase in the number of Android tablets hitting the market and the debut of a dedicated tablet version of Android, the iPad 2 will finally have some serious competition. Though Android will make inroads into the tablet market, the iPad 2 is expected to keep the #1 spot for the next few years. Hopefully, we will get a glimpse of these industry leading sales figures later today during Apple's earnings conference call.

  • Apple awarded iPhone 4 design patent

iPhone 4 patent illustrations from Patently AppleThe United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently awarded Apple with 18 fresh patents according to documents released by the government agency this week. Among the 18 new patents, one specifically addresses the design of the iPhone 4.

In the newly granted patent, filed by Apple in September, 2010, the Cupertino company details its flagship mobile device in words and illustrations. The patent covers "the ornamental design for an electronic device with graphical user interface" and depicts the distinctive, minimalist industrial design of the iPhone 4, including the infamous stainless steel antenna that loops around its outer edge. The USPTO also furnished Apple with a similar design patent for the iPod touch released in 2007, patents for iTunes and Apple TV, and a technical patent for a touch display with integrated RFID components.

  • New Blue Yeti Pro Mic stalking audio enthusiasts

Blue Microphones makes outstanding mics for musicians, podcasters and anyone else who needs to capture or transmit audio with great clarity and range. After using one of Blue's Yeti USB mics at Macworld Expo 2010, I bought one to improve my audio on TUAW TV Live and the TUAW Talkcast. That same mic has also been used for recording voiceovers, screencasts and a commemorative video, and it never fails to amaze me just how good the sound quality is.

For many musicians, however, the Yeti just didn't do the job since it only had a USB connection. Now Blue has updated the Yeti with a new model, unsurprisingly called the Yeti Pro ($249.95 suggested retail price, available for less through some online sources). The Pro will make audio professionals happy, as it adds analog XLR output, an A-D converter chip, and a separate analog circuit path so it can be used with pro mixers and preamps.

As with the existing Yeti, the Yeti Pro can be used in both studio and desktop environments. The four-position pattern selector knob is still on the mic's tubular body, providing a way to switch between stereo, cardioid, omnidirectional, and bidirectional pickup patterns. There's still a mute button, gain control, and volume knob, and the base still has a standard threaded mic stand mount.

  • Japanese newspaper reports Apple picked Toshiba as sole LCD supplier

A Japanese newspaper report suggests Apple has chosen Toshiba as the sole supplier of its LCD displays for the iPhone. Earlier this year, a circulating rumor suggested Apple had invested US$1.2 billion in a Sharp-owned LCD production plant. The plant would go online in 2012 and provide Apple with an near-exhaustive supply of displays for its mobile devices. This latest report from Japan claims Apple has backed out of this venture, possibly due to an earthquake related disruption in Sharp's production.

Instead of Sharp, Apple has reportedly turned to Toshiba for its LCD displays. An earlier rumor suggested Apple was also investing US$1 billion in a Toshiba-owned LCD plant, but Toshiba later denied the rumor.

Sharp denies this current rumor claiming the Japanese report "contradicts the facts." One thing is for sure -- Apple has a large paper trail of money that is difficult follow as it secures an ample source of components to meet the growing demand for its mobile products.

  • iPad 2 now shipping in 1 to 2 weeks from online stores

It always pays to be patient.

While the iPad 2 had wait times of 4 to 5 weeks at launch, the devices are now shipping in 1 to 2 weeks from the U.S. online store. The ship times are consistent across all models, whether black, white, Verizon, AT&T, or with different storage capacities.

The new shipping times could be due to lower demand, but considering that it is still difficult to purchase an iPad 2 at many Apple Stores, the cause is probably Apple clearing up any production issues.

The new shipping estimates are not only showing up in the American Apple online store, but in Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and Australia online stores as well. European countries are still showing 2 to 3 week estimates, but it's likely that the shipping times will decrease for the European and Asian markets as well.
