  • iOS 4.1 jailbreak due on 10/10/10 10:10:10AM GMT
Joshua Hill (aka p0sixninja) has tweeted that a public iOS 4.1 jailbreak is imminent. The jailbreak, codenamed greenpois0n, is due for release on Sunday, October 10th, assuming there are no last minute stumbling blocks. This jailbreak leverages the SHAtter exploit developed by @pod2g, based on a crash discovered by Hill and is expected to work on newer iOS 4.1 devices, including the refreshed Apple TV, iPod touch 4G, and iPhone 4.

TUAW recently posted about a video created by the team showing the Apple TV jailbreak in action.

    Thanks, Danny

  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Apple TV and oddball video formats
    Hey Auntie TUAW,

I just ordered my new Apple TV, and have a ton of footage in MKV, AVI, etc. which probably won't work with iTunes, let alone my Apple TV.

What can I do to batch convert and import all my movies to iTunes, which will work with Apple TV and be as high-rez as possible?

    With all my love,

    Ari

  • Civilization V coming to OS X soon

Remember when Civilization IV came out, and Mac users had to wait nearly a year for the game to come to OS X? You'd be forgiven for thinking the same thing would happen with Civilization V, especially since there's been no official word from either Firaxis or 2K on when the turn-based strategy epic will make its way to the Mac. According to Mac Rumors, however, the wait for an OS X-compatible version of Civilization V may not be long at all -- they claim the Mac port may be coming sometime in the next few weeks.

The Mac has enjoyed a sort of gaming renaissance in 2010, with Steam integration earlier this year followed by many high-profile titles (finally) making their way onto the platform. The Civilization series is one of the biggest names in PC/Mac gaming, so if it does indeed make it to OS X only a couple of months after its Windows debut, it's another hopeful sign that game developers are finally taking Mac-based gaming seriously.

Civilization V requires registering with Steam, even if you bought a copy in a brick-and-mortar store. If you've already bought the game for Windows, you might not have to purchase it again to play it in OS X -- so far this has been the case for other titles released through Steam's online store, but it may or may not apply to copies bought through other retail outlets. Either way, I'll definitely be holding off on purchasing the game until after I finish my Master's thesis... because "Just one more turn" very quickly turns into, "Whoa, it's February already?"

  • Report: Apple canceling iPhone 4 orders in Hong Kong
According to M.I.C Gadget, Apple is canceling online iPhone 4 orders in Hong Kong in an attempt to thwart would-be resellers.

Recently, customers have either had their existing orders canceled or been prevented from placing new orders. Many shoppers received this email from Apple:

    "Dear Apple Online Store Customer,

Thank you for your recent Apple order.

To ensure that all customers are given the opportunity to acquire iPhone, we have limited the quantity available per customer. Our records indicate that you've exceeded this limit for iPhone orders, therefore this order has been cancelled.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

    Sincerely,
    Apple Online Store Customer Support"

That sounds like a message to someone trying to exceed Apple's one-per-customer limit. However, M.I.C Gadget insists that their "deep research" revealed that all kinds of orders have been canceled, from new ones to those placed back in September, regardless of quantity or purchase history.

Last week, Apple Store security temporarily shut down a Beijing store that had attracted would-be resellers who were buying iPhones 20 and 30 at a time, only to offer them to passers-by right outside the store. Within hours, the store re-opened with the one-per-customer policy in place.

Grey and black market iPhone sales have been an ongoing problem in China, recently made worse by significant supply shortages, despite manufacturer Foxconn's best efforts. Here's hoping a resolution can be found.

  • Locality app does location based search with a few twists

There's no shortage of location-based search apps. One of my favorites is Around Me, but there are plenty of others. Smith Micro has come up with its own search app that has some nice additions, and misses a few things too.

The free app, called Locality, uses Google searching to find the nearest restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, etc. It does that well, generating a list of places, or it can show them on a map. One nice feature is an 'Events' function, so you can see things that might be of special interest around you. Some things it found were local concerts, antique shows, and some commercial events like sales at local stores.

The app also features a selection of geo-tagged photos. They are provided by Panoramio, and it's a nice addition to this compact little app. Sadly, the photos are only one way affairs. You can see submitted photos, but you can't submit them from the Locality app. (Panoramio has a free app that lets you do this from your iPhone.) You can email the photos, or the app can give you directions to where the photo was taken. which is a useful feature. I'd like to see it do the same with pictures from your own camera roll.

  • T-Mobile HTC Slide to provide non-FaceTime video chat with iPhone 4
FaceTime is one of the most visible features of the iPhone 4, with much of the advertising for the newest iPhone showing off the emotionally-rich video chat capabilities that FaceTime provides. But if your friends are on another network or don't have an iPhone 4, it's impossible to use your phone to video chat with them.

Yahoo! and T-Mobile would like to change that. T-Mo announced earlier in the week that an upcoming Android phone, the HTC Slide, will come with two cameras arrayed much in the same manner as those on the iPhone. The Slide will also provide video chatting with any other phone equipped with two cameras, including the iPhone 4.

Since FaceTime is an Apple-specific feature, how is T-Mobile going to do this? Through Yahoo! Messenger. The current iOS app doesn't appear to currently support video chats, but Yahoo!'s admission that the capability would be available for the iPhone 4 indicates that an upcoming version will take advantage of the built-in cameras.

Yahoo! Messenger will not only provide video chatting with other mobile devices, but it should also make it possible to share some "face time" with Yahoo! Messenger users on Macs and PCs as well. It's expected that the HTC Slide from T-Mobile will be available prior to Christmas, hopefully bringing the new versions of Yahoo! Messenger for iOS and Mac OS X that will make possible video chatting for the holidays.

  • First stereo iPad dock available from iLuv
iLuv, makers of numerous accessories for Apple devices, have released their first stereo speaker dock system specifically designed for the iPad -- the iMM747.

Built to accommodate your iPad's rather large stature, with a flexible docking structure that adjusts to fit your iPad, you'll be able to listen to your music, use your apps and watch your favorite TV shows and movies with "orchestral tri-component sound in a speaker dock." With separate drivers for treble, mid-range and bass, Howard Kim, the Sr. Marketing Manager at iLuv, says you'll "fill any room in the house with superb audio."

The iMM747 charges your iPad "ultra fast," and syncs your iPad to iTunes while your iPad is still in the dock, too (using a sync cable).

The iMM747 is also compatible with the iPhone / iPod touch as well as just about every other iPod under the sun. And for your old CD player, the iMM747 comes with an auxiliary line input for any device with a 3.5mm output socket.

Being that there's not much in the way of iPad speaker docks, if you're in the market for one, the iMM747 looks like it's worth checking out. Available in early October, the unit is priced at US$149.99 from the iLuv website.

  • App Review: Wabash Cannonball rolls in with a near-perfect score
    wabash cannonball iphone

Simple graphics, deep gameplay. That's what the 2007 board game Wabash Cannonball promised and delivered. The Winsome train game, with a small print run of around 300 copies (we think), quickly sold out. The game was then licensed to Queen Games and re-released as Chicago Express. This version sold well enough that an expansion pack was released. Now, the game comes to the iOS market as an app called Wabash Cannonball [US$4.99]. It's got everything (almost) that the earlier, nearly identical games have, but it's all packed into a tiny screen - maybe a little too packed - along with a few digital friends to play against. Very different from your normal iPhone time-waster app, Wabash is a gamer's game, and it deserves attention. The name might refer to a fictional train, but there's a lot of real gameplay here. Read on for the full ride and to see if you'd like to hop aboard the Wabash Cannonball.

  • GDC Online 2010: Hands-on and preview of WINtA
WINtA is probably the best brand new game that I've seen so far at GDC Online 2010 (this week in Austin, Texas). It's a title published by a group called OneBigGame, which is a nonprofit video game publisher. They commission and publish games, which are created for free by luminaries in the video game field, and then they sell them to customers for money that goes straight to charities around the world. Founder Martin de Ronde took the stage at GDC to allegedly talk about how to take an app from iPhone to the iPad, but what he actually did was show off this really amazing game and music platform, and he gave a road map to where the iPad version will eventually go.

"WINtA" stands for "War is Not The Answer," which is what game creator Masaya Matsuura felt after September 11th, and that's what he wanted to transfer into game form. WINtA itself is actually a rhythm game -- Matsuura is well known in the gaming community for making PaRappa the Rapper, which is a highly regarded PlayStation game known for pioneering the genre that eventually launched Guitar Hero and Tap Tap Revolution. de Ronde approached Matsuura under the OneBigGame banner, asking if he would create a game to sell for charity, and with the help of Dutch developer Triangle Studios, Matsuura came up with WINtA. The app will be out on the App Store for free later this year.

Check out more, including a video of the demonstration, after the break.

  • Estimates vary on number of iPads sold
In the professional guesswork that is estimating Apple's sales numbers, numbers are varying wildly about just how many iPads Apple has sold.

According to Philip Elmer-DeWitt, the general consensus is that Apple has sold about 8.25 million iPads. He's gathered quarterly estimates from many sources and compiled a list. They range from 3.80 million iPads sold (issued on September 28th by Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co.) to 6.0 million (issued on October 1st by Robert Paul Leitao of Apple Finance Board).

As Philip points out, Apple sold 3.27 million iPads in the third quarter. Apple will hold its 4th quarter financial earnings conference call on October 18th, and TUAW will be live-blogging the event. Check back then to get the real numbers.

  • TUAW video review of the new Apple TV
Yesterday afternoon on TUAW TV Live, I ran a 21-minute video that I put together that shows the features of the new Apple TV as well as the Apple Remote app for iPad. This was part of a special TUAW TV Live episode (which can be viewed in its entirety here) focusing on the Apple TV.

Since many readers might want to see how the Apple TV works without watching the whole hour-long TUAW TV Live episode, I've taken the liberty of posting two YouTube videos that show how the device works. I also have some opinions on the device, which I'm glad to share -- I think version 2.0 of the Apple TV is a huge improvement over the first device in size, power efficiency, speed, price, and clarity. Apple still needs to increase the number of video sources (networks in particular) that can be streamed from the device, and AirPlay won't go live for another month or so, but I already consider device the best $99 I've spent on tech equipment in 2010.

Check out the video (split into two pieces to fit onto YouTube) on the next page.

  • GDC Online 2010: Mark Rein on iOS and Epic Citadel
If you are an iPhone gamer and haven't tried Epic Citadel yet, you're doing yourself a disservice. Epic Games wowed the crowd at the recent Apple event with the free demo, showing an astoundingly beautiful virtual town running in full 3D graphics on the iPhone and the iPad. Epic's Mark Rein is here at GDC Online 2010 this week to talk to developers about Unreal Engine 3 on iOS and other platforms (he can't keep from showing off the game running on Android, even when you tell him that you work for an Apple blog and don't write about Android anyway), and I cornered him to chat about Epic Citadel and Project Sword, the game it's serving as a demo for.

My first question was what drew Epic to a platform like the iPhone in the first place -- the developer is known for titles like Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, which are big flashy titles that sell Microsoft's platforms, not Apple's. Rein told me that it was "the power of the hardware. It was capable of doing what we wanted it to do in mobile. That's always been our driving philosophy, is when we have platforms that are powerful enough to run our technology, and there's a good business case for supporting them, that we would."

  • Analyst: Sharp rise in iPad sales estimates
Yet again, more analyst news regarding the iPad impacting laptop and netbook sales. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that estimated sales of the iPad for 2010 have more than doubled to 11 or 12 million units sold this year, with 20 million iPads expected to be sold in 2011 -- which is still conservative according to some other analysts.

In contrast, the NPD Group estimates that sales of laptop units in the US rose by only 12% in the first eight months of this year as apposed to a 30% percent increase in sales last year for the same period. On top of that, NDP Group reports that unit sales were down 1% over July and August -- the peak back-to-school season for such sales.

Naturally, the WSJ points to the sluggish economy for such a shift. The paper does also note that some shoppers are preferring to buy the iPad, even at a premium price, over cheaper laptops and netbooks, though the iPad represents only a fraction of portable computer sales overall.

The article suggests that the competition for consumers' dollars will become even more fierce with the emergence of competing tablet devices from other manufacturers later this year and next year. But for now, there is still no doubt that Apple is leading the way with the iPad.

  • Mirror's Edge coming to the Mac later this year

A mobile version of the first-person platform game Mirror's Edge is already available for the iPad and iPhone, but the original version hasn't made it to the Mac... yet. Court documents from a lawsuit filed against Electronic Arts by Edge Games state that "a Mac version of the original 'Mirror's Edge' video game is currently under development and is slated for release later this year."

Mirror's Edge has been available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for almost two years now, and the Windows version came out in January of 2009. Like Portal and a few other high-profile games that have recently released for the Mac, the availability of Mirror's Edge for OS X is definitely a case of "better late than never." Having recently played through the iPhone version of the game, I'll be curious to see how it runs on the Mac... as long as the price is right for a game that's been available on other platforms for so long.

  • Apple Store restarts bumper case sales
Thanks to a couple of tips this morning, we note that iPhone 4 bumpers are once again available in the Apple Store online. The cases, which retail for US$29.99, were taken off the virtual shelves during the 'Antennagate' free case giveaway period, just expired.

Interestingly, Apple's product images for the bumpers all include a product that isn't on sale yet -- the legendary, much-anticipated white iPhone 4.

    Thanks Mike and Marc

  • Manage your Seton Hall University Education with SHUMobile
Seton Hall University (located in New Jersey) and Blackboard have developed the SHUMobile (free) app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It's also available for Blackberry, Android, and Nokia devices. SHUMobile provides a student portal to a wide variety of what Seton Hall has to offer. In effect, it's one stop shopping for managing your education. The app is quite well designed and provides eight categories at present, including:
    • A searchable phone directory
    • Athletics, which allows you to drill down to each sport and break them into men's and women's teams, with a scrolling list of stories about each. Also provided are options to search for game schedules and scores.
    • Listings of events of the day, which are broken down into the following categories: Academic, Athletics, Campus Tours, Conferences, Exhibits, Film, Lectures and Readings, Performances, Receptions, Religious, Student Government, and Workshops. A daily listing is provided along with an easy way to move forward or back by a day. Choosing one brings up a screen with specific information on that event.
    • A pinch and stretch campus map that uses GPS to locate your position on campus
    • A scrolling list of videos
    • Seton Hall news (broken into categories)
    • A searchable listing of 250 images of people and campus life
    • The entire course catalog, which drills down to times, dates, instructors, and location

  • GDC Online 2010: OpenFeint after Game Center
The last time I spoke with the folks at OpenFeint, we were all waiting for the arrival of Apple's official Game Center app and wondering what effect it would have on third-party social networking platforms for App Store apps. Now, of course, Game Center is out. And despite the dire predictions of onlookers, OpenFeint is still rolling right along. The network continues to offer functionality to developers above and beyond what Apple's official solution provides, and it provides cross-platform services even outside of Apple's purview.

OpenFeint's VP of Marketing, Eros Resmini, met up with me here on the floor of the Game Developers' Conference (going on this week in Austin) for a quick chat about what he thought of Game Center's launch, how OpenFeint is doing with Apple's official network up and running alongside of it, and what's next for the service and the network. • TUAW's Daily App: Cut the Rope
At every one of these gaming shows (it's GDC Online this week, which I'm at for TUAW), there's usually a "game of the show" that emerges. It's something, either on the show floor or demoing behind closed doors, that everyone starts to talk about. The buzz starts at parties and in the hallways, and then it carries over into panels and starts to crop up in those casual discussions about "what you've seen this week." But so far, the game everyone's talking about this week isn't even on display at the show. Epic's Mark Rein even recommended Chillingo's newest title, Cut the Rope, to me. It's a brand new game that's already making a huge splash this week (as of this writing, it was number two on the App Store paid list), and it's all the rage among app developers and journalists here at GDC.

The phrase being passed around is "Angry Birds meets Fruit Ninja," and those comparisons are apt. The idea is that you guide a little piece of candy, by cutting ropes and manipulating other items in the environment, to a cute little monster that's hungrily trying to eat it. Cut the Rope has the cute characters of Angry Birds and the fun, tactile interaction of Fruit Ninja all wrapped up into one extremely polished and shiny package. For only US$0.99, you get four stages full of levels, three stars to collect in each level (to add replayability), and to top it all off, Game Center integration for achievements and leaderboards. The iPad version is $1.99, but there's also a lite version on that device to check out.

I'm not even that big of an Angry Birds fan, but I found myself giggling as I pulled off Cut the Rope's little puzzles. I was very charmed by Om Nom, the little monster who just wants that hanging candy. Cut the Rope has just barely gone live, and this is an app that is already getting into people's heads.

  • Tweet Library for iPad makes Twitter useful

I've long been fascinated by the idea of using Twitter as both a social platform and a means of archiving my life on the web. I've played with using favorites, searches, backup services, my own bots for archiving links and direct messages ... I know it goes against the grain of the original vision of Twitter, but it's grown to be something that really has the potential to be more than a flighty (excuse the pun) social network. I haven't, however, really found a solid way to make Twitter work for me the way I think it could. That seems to have changed today, with my discovery of Tweet Library for iPad.

Tweet Library is a Twitter client, but its main feature set revolves around archiving and organizing your tweets. You can see your last few thousand tweets (3,000 tweets on import, which I believe is the limit of the API - Ed), and you can search and filter your timeline, lists, favorites and mentions, as well as search all of Twitter. When you run across words of wisdom, links of interest, general hilarity, or any tidbit you'd like to save, you can send them into custom Collections. Create as many collections as you need, and let them serve as a means of organizing the flurry of information you come across on a daily basis. You can archive and export your collections and timelines, too. I won't list every feature here (there are a lot of them), but I'll note that support for TextExpander and Instapaper is among a host of other niceties.

Manton Reece (Riverfold Software), the developer of Tweet Library, is no stranger to TUAW, nor to polished and useful applications. There's obviously a good bit of his heart and soul in this latest endeavor. I've come across a couple of minor bugs in this initial version, but he's been very responsive and is already working on the next update with more features and fixes. The app is priced at US $9.99 ... a bit pricey for the timid, casual Twitter surfer, but a solid investment for anyone who spends more time there than they'd readily admit. If you fly with that flock, have a peek at Tweet Library on the App Store, and check out the website for screenshots and a short video.

  • TUAW review: Sonos S5
A few weeks ago, I had a chance to visit the Sonos offices in Cambridge, MA to speak with Jon Reilly, Sonos product manager, and get a demo of the ZonePlayer S5 and the iPad app (free). Sonos makes wireless home music systems, which we've covered here before. I've also spent the last month with 2 S5 demo units. I can say that it's a fantastic product that could not be simpler to set up and use. With one in my office and one in my kitchen, my family has been rocking all month long. The S5 and iOS controllers are a beautifully executed union of hardware and software that's as simple as it is powerful and just plain fun. In fact, I'll be sad to ship these back! Here's our full review of the Sonos S5.

  • TUAW TV Live: A focus on the new Apple TV
It's been out for a week, probed like a hillbilly picked up by aliens, and talked about on every Apple blog. What is it? The new Apple TV, of course.

Today's TUAW TV Live is going to focus on the newest member of the Apple family, with video highlights of the device in action. You'll be able to see how the Lowtide user interface works, view the Apple remote apps for iPhone and iPad, and see how the device settings can be configured.

Once I'm done with the video tour, you're free to ask questions, speculate on the future of the Apple TV platform, and otherwise contribute to the chat.

How do you join on the fun? From your Mac or PC, just go to the next page by clicking the read more link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to join in on the fun by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application.

iPad users haven't been forgotten, either, as you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. And one final note -- if the show has started and you're seeing a previously recorded show instead of the livestream, you can always pop on over to ustream.tv/tuaw to join the show in progress.

  • Found Footage: AXA Equitable presents an innovative ad
AXA Insurance and Financial Services (a company that just hired my son this morning) has come up with a very creative iAd* to introduce an app for their Belgium based auto insurance division. Their advertising agency, Duval Guillaume of Antwerp, has created a story that integrates newspaper advertising with an iPhone. The video explains it quite well, but the gist is that you come upon an engaging picture in print and are asked to place your iPhone on a blank space on the page which brings the story to life, and keeps eyeballs on the iAd for a full minute.

At the end of the ad, you are brought to a link to download the free app which doesn't seem to be for the American market. The app will allow you to handle car insurance claims. This is really thinking outside the box and embeds a fast moving story right into the presentation. I think the idea is quite impressive. What's your take?

    [via 9to5 Mac]

*Hats off to semantics. While AXA touts their effort as an "i-Ad," it is obviously not a part of Apple's iAd platform (for example, it requires the user to open a website on their iPhone). We imagine that AXA's enthusiasm and recognition of Apple's love of the letter "I" prompted the misleading label. Our apologies.

  • Tony Curtis buried with iPhone
tony curtis with iphoneAs many of you have likely heard, actor Tony Curtis passed away in his home last week at the age of 85, due to cardiac arrest. Curtis was best known for his lead roles in movies such as Some Like it Hot and The Defiant Ones.

The late actor was put to rest Monday, the funeral being attended by family and friends. It's reported that Curtis was buried with some of his most cherished possessions, including a Stetson hat, an Armani scarf, driving gloves, a copy of his favorite novel ... and his iPhone.

I'm not really sure what's more surprising about Curtis being entombed with his iPhone: that he's buried with it for eternity, or that an 85-year-old man was so enamored with an iPhone that he (or others) felt it should remain with him.

Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time before the jokes of Curtis calling from the grave are in full force.

  • Want FaceTime on 3G? Try Tango

Tango is a video and audio chatting app that does what FaceTime should have done. It works on a 3G (or a 4G) network. This free app was released last week and I have been testing it over the weekend.

It performs pretty much as advertised using it on my iPhone 4. You can make and receive calls over either a WiFi network, or over the cellular network. Even better, the app works with a variety of Android phones including the Droid, HTC Hero, Evo and Nexus One so you're not stuck with just iPhone users.

When you get the app you register for a free account. Your name and email address is all that's needed, and the Tango contact list will instantly display friends who have signed up. Contacting them is as easy as clicking on their name. You have the choice to do an audio-only call or a video call. Both iPhone 4 cameras are supported, and just like FaceTime, you can switch cameras while a call is on progress.

How well does it work? I tried a call to an Android phone running Tango and it worked fine. An acid test was a call from a friend visiting China. He called me from the Great Wall, and the video was passable and audio was fine. He said he was in an area with intermittent 3G and Edge, and his connection kept switching, but given the conditions it did work well. If the Tango app notices network issues, it puts up a warning on screen. Eventually the video locked up and the call dropped, but it was better than expected under challenging international conditions.

  • Rumor: Verizon iPhone to debut early next year
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will start manufacturing a Verizon-ready iPhone by the end of this year, with sales to start early 2011. Based on the iPhone 4, the new phone would leverage CDMA technology instead of the GSM 3G mobile technology used by AT&T. Wireless telecommunications company Qualcomm will provide a key chip for the new device.

Sourced to "people briefed by Apple," the WSJ story is thin on details but is published on a reputable site that usually doesn't stick its neck out on unfounded items. If this report is grounded in truth, it indicates the end of AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple and the possible opening of the device in the United States for even further carriers.

This is a rumor we've heard several times before.

  • New iPhone 4 ad touts Retina Display

A new iPhone 4 ad has hit the airwaves.

Rather than featuring FaceTime, which is now quickly making it into the mainstream on shows like Hawaii Five-O, the new ad focuses on the Retina Display. In the ad, the ability of the display to bring out the best of photos, movies, text, and games is vividly demonstrated on "the highest resolution phone screen ever."

Seeing how other phone manufacturers are now using terms like "our high-resolution AMOLED display" in their advertising, this is a smart move on Apple's part while they still have the lead in phone display technology.

  • TUAW TV Live this afternoon at 5 PM EDT: The Apple TV episode
When last week's episode of TUAW TV Live was being streamed, my Apple TV had just been delivered and I hadn't been able to do more than shoot a quick unboxing video. After a week, I've had an opportunity to put the new Apple TV through its paces and find what I like and dislike about the new unit.

This afternoon, join me for a special Apple TV edition of TUAW TV Live. I'll show you the device, how it connects to the world, and give you a detailed tour of the Lowtide user interface. I'll also demonstrate the use of Apple's free Remote app in controlling the Apple TV, and then we'll open the chat room to discussion of the device.

It all starts at 5 PM EDT today here at TUAW. Show up a few minutes early either here at TUAW.com, or visit the Ustream link below to watch -- either way, you'll be treated to a live video stream and a chat tool. If you can't make it to the live show, all of the TUAW TV Live episodes are archived on our Ustream page so you can view them at your leisure.
