- Engadget tries to fry an egg on Penryn MacBook Pro
Filed under: Hardware, Macbook Pro
OK, they didn't really try to fry an egg. But for those of us using those first searing-heat MBP's, you'll be happy to know the Penryn MacBook Pro's are a little cooler (temperature-wise anyway). On average, about 10° F cooler, and the fans run slower and quieter. Sorry if this kills any MacGuyver-esque plans of using Penryn laptops as emergency griddles.
For a much more detailed analysis of the Penryn advantages, check out the Engadget post, complete with Xbench tests and a flavorful grid with all the analysis.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Hardware, Software, Video, Odds and ends
Apple has already stolen the multitouch interface from the iPhone for the MacBook Air and the new MacBooks, but they haven't yet borrowed that other scrolling "feature," known here as "kinetic scrolling." If you'd like to steal it for your own Mac, however, jkOnTheRun has just the thing: a tip about Smart Scroll X, a program that lets you use your mouse to do some kinetic scrolling in any Mac app you want.
We've actually posted about Smart Scroll before, but the video is a pretty good demonstration of what's happening here. I'm not quite sure this is something Apple will want to implement in the OS, however -- it feels right enough on the iPhone, but I kind of like that my scroll wheel stops when I tell it to. If you'd rather have the iPhone experience on your usual Mac, however, the app is available as a free trial, or a complete license for $19.

Filed under: Audio, Hardware, iPod Family, Cool tools, Hacks
Retro Thing, one of my favorite blogs, points out this clever hack. The iPod nano is great, but that screen is a little small for watching movies. How do you solve that problem? Well, if you have some time, a 35mm slider viewer, and some small speakers you can hack together a solution (as seen in the video).

The movie looks pretty good, though this solution does make the iPod just a little less portable. That's the great thing about hacks, though, they don't need to be practical to be awesome.

My Time Capsule is sitting somewhere in China at the moment, but our friends over at Engadget managed to get their hands on one, and they have even posted some unboxing pictures. They note that the device itself is a little larger than you might think it is based on looking at the pictures on Apple.com. I'm sure they will post more once they put the Time Capsule through the paces.
I'll certainly be posting my first impressions once I get my Time Capsule up and running.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, Hacks, iPhone
Guess what's come out of the pumpkin patch news service this time? A video that shows hackers using iTunes to restore an already-jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. The iPhone software bundle (the ipsw file) has been pre-hacked and updates through iTunes to a fully hacked system. Like other hack previews, this one is not yet ready for prime-time. The developers put this together as a proof-of-concept, but hey'll likely be releasing this method when the actual SDK comes out.
Congratulations again to Pumpkin, roxfan, Turbo, wizdaz, bgm, np101137 and the iPhone dev team.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Odds and ends, Deals
Freeverse has sent along the heads up on a sale they're having today only. To celebrate "Leap Day" (yes, we're only having this twenty-four hour period today because it's a Leap Year), they're selling everything they got for an extra 20% off whenever you use the code "leapyear" during checkout.
What could you buy? Well, you could grab their 3D Desktop Defense-like game Horde of Orcs for a mere $20, pick up Neon Tango (a flashy Asteroids-like shooter) for the same price, or grab Wingnuts 2, which isn't too bad a bit of pick-up-and-play shooting fun, for $24. You could also grab any of the apps they sell for the sale price, too: they've got Comic Life Deluxe for $24 and the award-winning Lineform for $64 after the discount.
Yeah, 20% ain't too huge, but hey it's only Leap Day, and if you've been waiting to grab some of this Freeverse 'ware this makes today the perfect time to do it.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Apple
World of Apple is reporting on a recent 45-minute Q&A session with Tim Cook, Apple's COO, at the Goldman Sachs Investment Symposium. In regards to iPhone unlocking (or allowing users to move to another cell network with their iPhone), Cook said that it is "difficult" to please all users on all networks, primarily because the US uses both GSM and CDMA protocols. He did say that the iPhone model may change over time, but that the current AT&T deal provides the best coverage and simplest experience for the user.
"We're not married to any business model," Cook stated. "What we're married to is shipping the best phones in the world."
Cook also said that the upcoming iPhone SDK will allow developers to "only be limited by [their] imagination." He declined to give further details because Apple wants to keep "the element of surprise." Cook also talked about the AppleTV, iPhone price cuts, and iPod shuffle price cuts.
The session was recorded and is available for your listening pleasure on Apple's site.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Macbook Pro, MacBook, Beta Beat
You know the drill. Close your laptop's lid or select "Sleep" from the Apple Menu and it does just that - it goes into low-power mode, or "sleep."
That's just not good enough. Check out SmartSleep, which puts your MacBook or MacBook Pro into either Sleep Mode or Hibernate Mode, depending on several factors.
For example, if your battery is at 20%, SmartSleep puts your Mac to sleep and hibernate. If it's down to 5%, it goes right to hibernate mode, preserving items in memory. Otherwise, it just sleeps as it typically does.
Finally, you can select any of these settings as the default for your machine. SmartSleep is free.

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
If you've been giving presentations or product demonstrations and needed to highlight your cursor and keyboard shortcuts, then there's a good chance you've heard of, or even own, Boinx Software's excellent application "Mouseposé".
If you're one of the above owners of Mouseposé then you might want to visit the Boinx website, as today Mouseposé version 3 has been released with a few new snazzy features:
- audible feedback on mouse-clicks (to add to keystroke visualisation in version 2), allowing you to play a sound when clicking a mouse button
- window highlighting is now possible, with Mouseposé able to detect when you're hovering on a window, and expanding the in-focus area to include the entire window.

- Dave Shea's new iPhone/iPod touch theme
Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone, Graphic Design
Web designers and enthusiasts are likely already familiar with Dave Shea, the Canadian web designer behind the css Zen Garden and other standards-based web projects. If you're not familiar with him from that angle, you may recognize his Chalkwork series of icons which has just had a set of iPhone & iPod touch icons added to it.
While most of his work comes with a well-deserved price tag, this set is available free of charge. It contains 29 well-designed icons, including the default applications and some select third-party apps. The download includes a selection of Dock and Wallpaper images as well. You'll need a jailbroken iPhone/touch to use them and the set comes with instructions for manual and SummerBoard installations.
iPhone/iPod touch owners (and anyone else who wants to) can download the free icon set at mezzoblue.

Filed under: Accessories, Analysis / Opinion, Apple Corporate, Wireless, Apple
Earlier today Scott posted that the long-awaited Time Capsules are indeed now starting to ship. However someone ought to go let the folks at Apple's Hot News team know, as this entry in the Apple Hot News feed is somewhat perplexing.
"Time Capsule, the wireless hard drive you can use to back up multiple Mac computers using Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard, has begun shipping. "Notifications of the shipments began reaching customers that pre-ordered the device early this morning," according to Jim Dalrymple (macworld.com)."
I'm sure that Apple wants to vaunt the arrival of the delayed Time Capsule (I'm very tempted myself, now that they're arriving). However here at TUAW (and we're not alone) we fail to see how leaving this announcement 'according to [much respected Macworld writer] Jim Dalrymple' is in any way beneficial to Apple: if Time Capsule is shipping, why isn't Apple willing to yell it from the rooftop themselves?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

I've seen some very convincing PayPal phishing sites in recent years. I've also worried many times that friends and relatives less savvy in the ways of the phisher may inadvertently hand off a password or two and blame me - the one who talked them into a PayPal account to begin with - for the draining of their life savings. Thankfully PayPal shares my concern for said friends and family members and has published a guide to "Safer Browsers." Apple's Safari web browser, however, was not included in the list of recommended browsers.
This is not all that surprising, at least to anyone who's followed Safari security concerns. Despite having improved in certain areas, such as IDN spoofing, Safari still lacks some fundamental security features found in Internet Explorer (7+), Firefox and Opera. Features such as Extended Validation certificates are heavily promoted by PayPal, despite the warnings of critics who feel that many targets of phishing scams don't notice the green background in the URL field until it's too late -- if at all. Plugins like Saft do their bit, adding a few security features too. But until Safari catches up with IE and Firefox in the area of security, it's not likely that PayPal's list is going to include the otherwise spectacular browser.

Filed under: iPod Family, Multimedia, iPhone
A while back instant playaudio karma hit when I was playing around with the iPhone command line. Today, it hit again. After adding video to my command-line playback utility (courtesy of dmunsie's working it all out), I decided to try playing back video from the Internet archive--and it worked! I watched the "Cliche Family" in a small window that floated above my GUI. (Screen shots don't work with video--that's why you're seeing a black rectangle). If you've got command-line access to the iPhone and a copy of my utilities, try issuing the following from the command line. So cool!

Matthias Huber wrote in to tell us about his new iChinese system that helps you learn your characters. iChinese uses the iPhone's touch-based interface to teach users how to write the characters on-screen.
It's available by adding the http://ichinese.de/repo repository to Installer.app. I don't speak Chinese. I don't write chinese (although I'm very fond of chinese food). I wouldn't know an ideogram if I tripped on one, so if you give this a try and have an informed view on how useful it is, let us know in the comments.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

As you might have heard by now (especially if you're an iPhone fan in Ireland), O2 will be bringing the iPhone to the Emerald Isle. Starting on March 14th our Irish friends can pick up a 8 gig iPhone for €399 or the 16 giger for €499. Plans start at €45 per month and all include 1GB of data per month (there is no unlimited data plan at the moment for the iPhone in Ireland).
One thing to note is that the Irish iPhone does not support Visual Voice mail, as is mentioned on this O2 page.

Filed under: iPod Family, UNIX / BSD, iPhone
After typing his fingers to the bone, overworked iPhone developer Jay "Saurik" Freeman has finally finished his long-awaited Cydia release. As Freeman puts it, the iPhone is a 667MHz computer with 128MB RAM and at least 4GB of flash. So why not use it as a Unix workstation?Motivated by the relative limitations of the existing BSD subsystem, Freeman decided to port Debian's APT to the iPhone -- tweaking items to work better with the iPhone's relatively messed-up network settings. A UIKit front end, Cydia, provides a GUI for users to select and install programs -- basically Installer.app for fully leaded geeks. Cydia isn't limited to command-line software. It should allow installation of any and all software package types.

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I penned a post reassuring people that the Time Capsule would, in fact, be shipping on time (where on time is 'by the end of February'). We are now getting reports that people who pre-order the Time Capsule are receiving shipping notifications. See? Nothing to worry about.
Sadly, my Time Capsule is still being prepared for shipment, but it should ship by tomorrow. Soon I will not have to hang my head in shame when someone asks me about my backup strategy.
