- The iPod touch upgrade: Are they bugging you?
Filed under: iPod Family, iTunes, Bad Apple
Did you upgrade your iPod touch? I did. But I presumed it was optional. TUAW readers who have chosen not to upgrade report they're being hounded. By iTunes. They say that every time they connect their iPod to iTunes for syncing, they're getting hit with a "buy the upgrade" page that only has an OK button. Once clicked, it transports you to the iTunes page for buying the software. Is this happening to you? Are you feeling strong-armed into buying the upgrade? Let us know in the comments.

Go second. Or third. Or last. That's the lesson on performing hacking upgrades. Let someone else make all the mistakes first and then follow just those footsteps that didn't lead, say, down the giant crevasse with the big old hungry lions waiting below.
Today, I'm about to upgrade my hacked Apple TV first--so you can see where I go wrong and then don't, yourself.

An upgrade to one of my favorite (and most useful) video compression and conversion utilities, VisualHub (which we've mentioned a few times), has brought with it support for 5.1 Surround Sound on the just-released Apple TV "Take 2." Despite not actually owning an Apple TV, I find myself happy for our video-converting, Apple TV-owning readers, and for the fact that any 5.1 AC3 audio I should happen to create won't be lost for that lucky audience.
The release notes also include some speed improvements for artwork tagging large (150MB+) videos not intended for the 'net, as well as a fix for aspect ratio conversion on Tivo-destined video. VisualHub 1.31 is a free upgrade for registered users. And for newcomers for whom it would be of use, it's worth every penny at the palindromic price of $23.32.
Visit the VisualHub website for more information.

Before the recent Macheist bundle I had never used the download manager Speed Download, but once it made it onto my system I've found that I really like it. Particularly for somebody who is constantly downloading new software, etc. the way it collects together (and organizes) all my downloads has been quite handy.
Well now it's clear why Yazsoft agreed to include Speed Download 4 in the bundle as the paid upgrade version 5 has been released. They're calling it the most substantial update ever and the list of new features is extensive. In addition to a new downloading engine behind the scenes, Speed Download 5 has a new customizable interface including a mini-iTunes like controller. Other additions focus on organizing and searching downloads.
Speed Download 5 is $25 and a demo is available. Upgrades from version 4 (including Macheist) are $15. They are also running a "switchers" promotion at $15 for users of "another commercial Mac download manager or FTP program."Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

With murmurings of Aperture 2 maybe, just maybe, arriving on the scene 'very soon', this morning's store down-time left one blogger hoping not for new hardware (I picked up a new Black MacBook just last weekend) but that Aperture 2 would arrive.
I've been a huge, huge fan of Aperture since I picked up a MacBook Pro in January last year, leaving the then-beta Adobe Lightroom out in the cold. Ever since the launch of Leopard, Aperture has been one of the few applications I've had minor stability issues with -- and the now-resolved incompatibility with Time Machine made me choose my photos over my backups. Others were less impressed with Apple's apparent dithering on Aperture, with a number of customers venting their frustration on certain message boards. Thankfully, if the compatibility issue with Time Machine has now been resolved, and a much-updated Aperture 2 has arrived.
So what on earth is new with Aperture 2.0, and what are our first impressions here at TUAW? Read on...Continue reading TUAW Review: Zooming in on Aperture 2, an introduction

Spore; the very word is enough to make certain gamers giddy with delight. Spore, for those not in the know, is the latest project of Will Wright, creator of the Sims. Much like the Sims, Spore is a sort of life simulation game, only this time you start off as a little micro-organism floating in primordial ooze, and you control you own evolution as you create a civilization that eventually launches itself into space to colonize other planets.
Spore has been many years in the making, and today it was announced that you will be able to play Spore on your Mac starting on September 7th, 2008. At this time system requirements are not known.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Microsoft releases patches for most of their products on a monthly schedule, on the second Tuesday of the month specifically. I'm telling you this because today is the second Tuesday of February and Microsoft has a gift for all you Office 2004 for the Mac users: a patch for a critical vulnerability (insert obligatory Microsoft joke here).
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.0 Update addresses, 'a vulnerability that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code.' Nobody wants malicious code on their computer, so if you're running Office 2004 for Mac on your Mac, apply this update as soon as possible. Office 2008 for Mac does not have this vulnerability.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Software Update, Apple, Leopard
Way back in October Nik (who is busily working on his Aperture 2 review) blogged about the problem combo of Aperture and Time Machine. It would seem that using Time Machine and Aperture could lead to some bad things happening to your Aperture database. Apple's suggestion, at the time, was to simply exclude Aperture's database from your Time Machine backups. Sadly, most photographers like to back up their photographs so this wasn't deemed a long term solution.
Enter OS X 10.5.2 and, according to Apple, the problem is solved. Time Machine will now happily back up your Aperture database (both Aperture 1.5 and 2) without a problem. That sound you hear is thousands of Aperture users breathing a sigh of relief.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/12/apple-tv-2-walk-through-whats-new/#comments - Early 10.5.2 reports: some users having wireless issues
As thewanton, recklesseager early adopters of Mac OS X 10.5.2 begin to explore the update's new features and fixes, a few folks are running into a WiFi buzzsaw. Some D-Link and Westell router users have noted on Apple's support boards that their 802.11n connections are failing to authenticate post-10.5.2. Dropping the router back to 802.11g seems to straighten things out. Macfixit concurs, with user reports of ongoing wireless problems.
Considering that Apple's own Airport Extreme has come in for some criticism over the past months for dropping connections (in some cases prompting radical solutions), and that 10.5.2 has wireless fixes listed among the changes, it's both unsurprising and disappointing that the upgrade hasn't gone more smoothly for WiFi users. If you're running 10.5.2 and seeing problems with wireless, let us know below.

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/12/apple-tv-take-2-now-available/#comments - iEatBrainz gets a Universal bump
Jay Tuley's original IEatBrainz apparently went defunct before it ever grew up to be a Universal build. Fortunately for us, Pierre Andrews picked up the (open) source code and made a version that works for just about everybody.
IEatBrainz uses the online acoustic fingerprint service "MusicBrainz" to fix improperly tagged files in your iTunes collection. It's simple, easy and pretty fast considering the number of web transactions it has to make. It serves as a great interface to MusicBrainz, which has to take the blame for any inaccuracies. The software allows you to select files from your library to check, and begins looking them up in the background while you're still picking files. You get a chance to review the ones that it thinks it found matches for before sending the information to iTunes.
For various and sundry reasons I have a lot of poorly tagged files in iTunes, so I spent some time seeing what it could fix. I have to tell you, it handled Black Metal and Classical quite well, scoring almost 100%. Other genres baffled MusicBrainz a little. My Dead Boys tracks were a wash and it told me that Siouxsie was actually Switchblade Symphony. Overall, about 60%, but I have some very obscure tracks. I don't even know what some of them are.
It's free, and no one will question why you have so many untagged tracks. We promise. You can grab the Universal build at 6V8.
Update from the developer's website: "Jay Tuley just contacted me to explain why a universal build had never been released. Basically, the TRM fingerprinting system provided by MusicBrainz will be switched off in the upcoming weeks/days. After that, even if you can run IEatBrainz, it won't find any result as the MusicBrainz servers won't be answering the requests."

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/12/ieatbrainz-gets-a-universal-bump/#comments - 10.5.2 breaks Linotype FontExplorer X, or vice versa
Filed under: Software, Bugs/Recalls, Leopard
Users of Linotype FontExplorer X may want to hold off on the 10.5.2 update ... if it's not already too late. It seems to start up fine, but once you do, clicking a stack will cause the Dock to hang; that's just one symptom, there are problems reported with several applications crashing while FontExplorer X is running.
Suspicions are circulating that a change in font handling may be the culprit, but FontExplorer X is the common thread in most complaints. There are discussions going on at creativebits, Apple.com and at the FontExplorer X discussion board. If you're a Leopard user and a heavy user of FontExplorer, you'll probably want to watch those discussions to see the solution when it surfaces.
Thanks Ivan!
Update: Seems like the problem is solved, version up. And let's have a round of applause for responsive developers while we're downloading.
