  • NetNewsWire 3.1.2 is out

    Filed under:

Here at TUAW, we rather like Brent Simmons' excellent (and now free) news-reader NetNewsWire. Not only does it make a lot of our lives easier by managing our feeds, but the syncing with NewsGator's other online and Windows desktop clients mean that we're (sadly) never far away from the news. If you too are a fan of NNW, then you'll probably want to know about the release of NetNewsWire 3.1.2, fixing (amongst other things):
    • 'I-see-nothing' bug which displayed an empty window for some users
    • Entity decoding in <link>s
    • much more aggressive removal of read items from their folders
    • a few syncing bugs
One other addition is the First-run Assistant, which will likely be seen by "[NetNewsWire] Lite users and people returning to NetNewsWire from a several-year absence." Simmons has discussed the particulars of this assistant on his own blog, and it's a fascinating read for those interested in the nuances of interface design. The update weighs in at just 5.6MB, and is available from the NewsGator site.

  • TomTom releases new management tool for Mac

Getting your dash-mount GPS unit and your Mac to talk to each other can be an exercise in frustration. TomTom's Mac client, while better than some of the other vendors' nonexistent Mac versions, has lagged behind the Windows version for a while -- I've been managing my TomTom GO through VMware Fusion rather than struggle with the Mac client. Now, a version of the TomTom client promising feature parity has been released, downloadable from the TomTom HOME site (direct link here).

The new 2.2.0 version does look a bit more like the Windows version, and seems to work fine for me; however, some have noted that you are now limited to a single backup of your device, rather than the multiple instances that you had before. Since a single TomTom backup can weigh in at 900 MB or more, I'm just fine with only one. The download is 31 MB and is freely available to TomTom users.

    Thanks Rob

  • Tubular finally makes it to public beta

    Filed under:

For a fair while, the future of Tubular -- a YouTube-downloading, converting and playback app -- has been in doubt. After a pre-order way back in 2006 to get in on the private beta, the application (and pre-purchasers) haven't really been given the love that they deserve, with the developer seemingly disappearing for swathes of time, giving less than intermittent updates on the Tubular blog.

Today, however, pre-purchasers received an email that a public beta has finally arrived, and that the application will indeed continue to move forward. The developer has committed to fully updating users on the progress of their purchase, and has held up his hands and apologised for the lacking development that pre-purchasers experienced over the last 15 months or so.

While we're pleased to hear that Tubular is still alive (and that customers are going to get the wares they've paid for) we can't help but feel that right now it's entering a particularly busy and well-represented market. With apps such as the long-established TubeSock ($15), CosmoPod and new (free) hard-hitter Tooble leading the pack, Tubular may be alive -- but it looks as though it'll have a struggle ahead of it.

Thanks to all those that sent this in!

  • Location of first Apple Store in China

The first Apple Store to open in China is reported to be joining 300 shops on Beijing's Qianmen Street, which is undergoing a $40 million renovation to restore it to Ming-era architecture. The store is scheduled to open before the August 8th opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics. The renovated street will become the city's second pedestrian-only shopping street and it's reported that Apple will be forgoing its well-established storefront in favor of a design that will blend with the Chinese architecture surrounding it.

China joined the World Trade Organization in 2005, and recently passed laws allowing non-Chinese companies to fully own businesses within China. Dell and Best Buy have already entered the market, which undoubtedly factored into Apple's decision to include Beijing in the 40 stores scheduled to open this year.

  • Found Footage: MacBook Pro HDD Replacement

I had to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro a few months ago. If you've never done it, I can tell you that after over 20 screws, a little prying and pulling and then reassembling with your fingers crossed, there's probably a moment of stomach-turning worry when you hit the power button. But some people have a knack for making things look a little less gut wrenching.

MacBook Pro owner Max Million replaced his hard drive in about 40 minutes. Working from the excellent instructions at ifixit, he put a 320 gig drive into his laptop. And while he was at it, he put together a time-lapse video of the process that's under 3 minutes long but still manages to convey the tenacity required for the undertaking. So, here's to the brave souls who have no regard for the phrase "not user serviceable". Video after the jump...
