  • Linkin Park performed "secret show" for iTunes Live session

    According to Billboard, Apple hosted a "secret show" at 12a this morning at the Apple SoHo Store in New York. Un-named sources say that the set was recorded, most likely for an iTunes Live session that will be released in March on iTunes.

    "This is the best show in an Apple store we've ever played," said Chester Bennington, who is the lead singer for Linkin Park.

    This isn't the first time that Apple has hosted in-store concerts for their iTunes Live Sessions; as you may recall, Thurston Moore, Kaki King, The New Pornographers, and many others have all played live for Apple. However, Linkin Park is the most well-known band to play in the SoHo Store.

  • AppFlow for the iPhone

    Some enterprising iPhone developer named Erica Sadun (we hear she blogs for a fly-by-night Mac site) has been tinkering around with CoverFlow on the iPhone for a book she's writing, and while the result of my doing the same tinkering would be nothing but a broken iPhone, she instead pulls off the opposite: an enhanced iPhone.

    AppFlow is a CoverFlow-style interface for launching iPhone apps and icons. You just install the app on your jailbroken iPhone, and then launching your favorite app is as simple as flipping to the icon and double-tapping. Webclips, we're told, are launched a completely different way, and thus not included in the flipping. But "maybe in a later update," our inside source told TUAW exclusively.

    If this is the kind of stuff we're getting from Sadun before the SDK drops, just think what we'll see after. The woman's a genius. And it's almost surprising that Apple didn't think of this in the first place -- if it works in Leopard, and it works in the iPod of the iPhone, why didn't they give us the option to flip through apps in this way?

  • Xserve disappears from Apple's Education stores

    Tuesday's launch of Xsan 2 coincided with the discontinuation of Apple's Xserve RAID Enterprise storage system. For shopper's at the Apple Store for Education, it appears that the Xserve in general has been completely removed as well. Although refurbished Xserve servers still come up under a search (as do Xserve parts and accessories), the product page for Xserve is conspicuously missing.

    We're not sure if this was just a simple oversight or a sign of trends to come. It's possible Apple wasn't seeing the sales for the Xserve product at the Education store to warrant whatever hardware discount they might have offered. I also think it's possible that schools interested in getting an Xserve setup from Apple could probably do better the direct sales route, as opposed to using the web-based one-stop shop.

    Whatever the reason, it is a bizarre exclusion -- and the first time I can recall an entire product being removed from one of Apple's pre-labeled storefronts.

  • iTunes 7.6.1 is out

    Update-addicts listen up: it's that time again, as iTunes 7.6.1 has hit Software Update. For a change, the release notes take up a good few paragraphs (at least on first inspection). Skipping the Apple TV marketing spiel, however, the release notes for this update amount to "several bug fixes and improve[d] compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0." -- music to your ears if you've been experiencing issues.

    The 44MB update for Apple's ubiquitous jukebox is available now through Software Update, and presumably Apple's Download pages momentarily.

  • TUAW Responds: iPhone LoJack

    Way back, one of our readers begged for an iPhone LoJack solution. He wanted his iPhone to "call home" regularly in case of loss or, let's be more realistic, theft. Over the past week, I finally had a chance to give this request some time, and I put together findme. It's a command-line program that returns the location of the cell phone tower nearest to your iPhone. When run, it tells you the tower id, plus its latitude and longitude courtesy of Google Maps.

    Still, how to get the location report to a place you can get it... but nobody else can... and without receiving a zillion SMSes? For this part of the puzzle, enter Twitter. Twitter dev Britt Selvitelle helped walk me through the setup for a private account that allows your iPhone to phone home but keeps the location data relatively secure.

    To do this, create a new Twitter account just for your iPhone (it will need its own unique email address, separate from your main account, so have one handy). Open the Settings panel, and look for the "Protect My Updates" checkbox. It's towards the bottom of the page, just above the Save button. Check this and click Save. With protected updates, only the Twitter users you approve will see the updates for this iPhone-only account (just you? you + spouse? spouse, kids, and "special friends?" Up to you).

  • Stop your iPhone from auto-launching iPhoto (or Aperture, etc.)

    One particularly annoying thing about plugging in my iPhone is that it always launches Aperture and prompts for permission to import photos. While you should be able to turn this off (in the preferences of the Image Capture application), what if you still want iPhoto (or Aperture, Lightroom, etc.) to launch when you plug in your camera or memory card? Capitalizing on the fact that Image Capture lets you choose any application to run automatically, Sam Stephenson over at 37signals has cooked up a fancy AppleScript to do just this. Once set up it looks to see what you've plugged it; if it's your camera it will launch iPhoto, etc.; if it's your iPhone it won't. The script is slightly complicated and must be customized for your particular camera model, but if you want the convenience of auto-launching your image management application for your camera, without the annoyance of the iPhone, it's worth a look.

  • Apple taking it easy on flash memory order this year

    CNET is reporting that iSuppli announced Apple is "cutting" their flash memory order this year, and in this case "cutting" doesn't mean "cutting" the way you or I would use it (as in, "The doctor said I had to cut my sugar intake, so I'll only have one doughnut instead of six."). No, it means "cutting" as in they're only raising their orders for flash memory by 16% instead of the expected 32% (which is like saying "I'll only eat three more doughnuts instead of six").

    Still, it's enough to send a few folks into a tizzy -- as CNET's Tom Krazit says so perfectly: "If Apple coughs, the flash memory market gets sick." I don't know that there's too much to read into this, except maybe that we probably won't see a brand new iPod this year. With the iPod touch and all the iPod iterations out right now, Apple pretty much has the market covered on mp3 players. That doesn't mean they won't drop lots of new products (I hear that they used to make computers of some kind), but it probably does mean that in terms of the current iPod brand, growth has peaked. Until they bring out that gaming device, flash memory isn't their biggest need.

  • iTunes Rental availability outperforms promises

    Many of our readers are noticing that rental titles reach iTunes more quickly than expected. Didn't Apple promise new titles 30 days after the DVD release? TUAW reader Robbie Taylor wrote in to let us know that Michael Clayton hit the iTunes "shelves" within just a day or so of its February 19th store release.   • iPhone as a touchpad

    I love this. Reader Jahanzeb sent us a little mini-app he cooked up out of vnsea that turns your Installer.app-enabled iPhone into a touchpad for your PC (and Mac, I assume, though the video above shows Windows). Once you've got the two talking to each other, you can click, double-click, and even drag windows around. Jahanzeb says scrolling is possible, "although it's a little rusty."

    Telekinesis is still awesome, but this app basically turns your iPhone into a remote for your whole computer. Anything you can do by moving and clicking a mouse around, you can do with this. Very neat. It is too bad that it requires Installer.app, and that it has to be done unofficially, but the official SDK is still (hopefully) just around the corner. I remain amazed at how much programmers like Jahanzeb and the vnsea guys (and anyone else working on the iPhone) are able to do unofficially.

  • Wharton interviews Woz

    Knowledge@Wharton, the online business journal of The Wharton School, has published an interview with Steve "Woz" Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, notorious prankster and a somewhat reluctant entrepreneur. It's one of the more in-depth interviews with him that I've read, covering the past, present and future, his relationship with Steve Jobs, his unique brand of humor and digging for further insights on otherwise ubiquitous information.

    If you woke up this morning wishing you could peer inside the mind of a major player in the history of personal computing, and hoping for a dash of humor and a side of Apple insights, you're in luck. And if you never read iWoz, this interview is practically a CliffsNotes ... so you can pretend you had the fortitude to at least peruse the 288-page tome.

  • iFreeMem 2.0: when you just don't feel like rebooting

    As good as OS X memory management may be, if you run your system for long periods of time without shutting down you'll likely see an increasing number of spinning beach balls as your uptime counter ticks away. When applications quit - especially big, memory-hungry applications - they often leave your RAM fragmented and unavailable to subsequently launched apps. The solution is generally a reboot, but if you're looking for something a little friendlier and less time-consuming, iFreeMem is a superb solution. The utility was just updated to version 2.0 with full Leopard support.

    I'm a long-time user of iFreeMem. On my MacBook Pro with 3 GB of RAM, it can generally clear up about 800 MB (sometimes more) after I quit a long session in apps like Photoshop and Motion. And it's rescued me on numerous occasions where I've found myself with three or four MB free and everything starts slowing to a crawl. I just loaded version 2 and it's faster and more efficient than ever. Good stuff.

    The author has signed up with Trial-Pay, which I can't say improves the image of the app or increases my respect for it, but it does provide one option to get a $19 application for free. In light of the overall positive nature of this post, I won't delve into my opinions on Trial-Pay and its ilk. Suffice to say that I'm a happy customer of iFreeMem who paid full price and have never regretted it. Oh, and the 2.0 upgrade is free for users of previous versions, you just have to re-enter your registration code. You saved it, right?

    Get a feel for whether or not iFreeMem would save some reboots for you with a 15-day, fully functioning trial.
