- Talkcast #27 online, back live on Sunday night
Filed under: TUAW Business, Podcasts, MacBook Air
Last week's talkcast (featuring Christina, Scott, and a bunch of your Mac questions) has been available for a couple of days, but if you've still got our original iTunes feed for podcasts in your subscription list, don't forget to add the TalkShoe feed as well -- we're not currently updating the main podcast feed, as it does a number on those of you reading the main feed in Mail.app.
You can download last week's show directly from TalkShoe (or stream it from the player below), or subscribe to the RSS or TalkShoe iTunes feeds. We'll be back live on Sunday night at 10 pm ET with a post-Superbowl chat, as long as everyone promises not to tell me the winner of the big game (I'll be DVRing it and I might not have it all watched by 10 -- go Giants!). A special invite to all MacBook Air owners who have received their shiny new machines: join us for the talkcast so we can hear about how food tastes better now and there's a new spring in your step.Continue reading Talkcast #27 online, back live on Sunday night

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Cult of Mac
You may remember 1986 as the year of Greg LeMond's first Tour de France victory. Or maybe you were more consumed with following the early stages of the Iran-Contra Affair. Perhaps you were preoccupied with being born. In that case, you might not care about this post as much as those who spent the year lost in the monochrome world of Prince Duncan.
The original Dark Castle came out on the Macintosh that year, and immediately became a side-scrolling, rock-throwing, rope-swinging hit. In 1987 it was followed by Beyond Dark Castle, and a helicopter backpack and an excess of explosives kept things interesting, if not addictive. Various versions and ports came out in years following, extending the longevity of the classic game even further. 1994 even saw a Color Dark Castle, still playable in Classic under 10.0 and 10.1, and 2006 brought a mobile version.
Now, for all of us who get nostalgic at the mention of the Black Knight, Return To Dark Castle is almost ready for prime time after being announced 7 years ago. New levels, new secret rooms, and 5 times the orb collecting fun might just make me waste a little more time than I can afford.
Reported finished by Z Sculpt, the previously released beta has expired, but info on the upcoming release and some QuickTime trailers are available at publisher Super Happy Fun Fun's website. There were hopes for a release today, but it didn't happen. If you're anxious, you can join the waiting throngs at the Dark Castle Blog or express your fervent desire at the forum. It could, it seems, turn out to be a wait as cruel as the Black Knight himself.

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/01/in-pursuit-of-the-black-knight-again/#comments - Shawn Blanc on MarsEdit 2.1
Filed under: Software, Blogging
Even though we can't use a tool like MarsEdit to post here at TUAW, some of us are still big fans of the program and use it when creating content for our other, more personal sites. Like Ecto, another very good tool for this type of content creation, Mars Edit allows you to compose blog entries, complete with text, links, photos or whatever, on your own computer and once finished, post them directly to your blog.
Of course, we're not the only fans of MarsEdit using it to put up content around the internets. Shawn Blanc, writer, Mac guy, drummer, Tae-Qwon-Do blackbelt and enthusiastic Mars Edit user has posted a very in-depth review of the application at his site. Among the program's many virtues, Blanc praises it for having a "perfect preview" of draft content, that it functions very well as a text editor and the "blatant absence of a WYSIWYG feature" which makes him "extremely impressed with how well it serves the writer."
MarsEdit 2 may not be the right choice for your blogging needs, but if you've never considered it before, this review might just make you want to give it a try. It's $29.95 for a new license, and $9.95 for an upgrade from ME1.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, Software, iPhone
Today, I was messing around in the Calendar.sqlitedb file associated with the iPhone's on-line calendar application. I was surprised to discover that the onboard calendar contains all the table support needed for to-do tasks, i.e. CREATE TABLE Task (ROWID INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT, summary TEXT, priority INTEGER, due_date INTEGER, completion_date INTEGER, calendar_id INTEGER);.
As of right now, this information is completely useless. Tasks won't sync to or from the iPhone. Still, it's good to see where Apple might expand their software. It's a direction that many users would find helpful. So c'mon, Apple, please add to-do list support to the iPhone.

Filed under: iPod Family, Software, iTunes, iPhone
Mac and iPhone/iPod developer Ecamm has just released a major upgrade to their iPhone Drive utility. iPhone Drive allows you to access the user data on your iPhone or iPod touch, both read and write. With it, you can copy files to and from the user partition. So if you need to bring some important files along with you, this utility turns your iPod or iPhone into a portable drive. What it doesn't do is this: It does not create a general-use USB device. You need iPhone Drive on both ends--to put data onto your system and to take it off.
The new 1.4 version provides four major upgrades: you can play any song from your onboard music library directly from the utility, you can access your SMS message archive and call history, and you can view the photos you've snapped using your onboard camera. Obviously these last three options are limited to iPhones only but despite the name, the software works with both iPhones and iPod touches.
These upgrades join iPhone Drive's existing feature repertoire that includes file I/O and read-only access to your music, ringtones, podcasts, audio books and notes. The 1.4 upgrade is free to users who registered versions 1.3 and earlier and $19.95 for new users.

Chalk this one up to bad press release timing: we neglected to note the release of a major update to Freeverse's Lineform vector art application, announced on January 14 (otherwise known as Steve's Eve). The new version includes full Leopard support and adds hooks for drawing tablet pressure sensitivity, plus many smaller feature and performance updates.
Lineform 1.5 is $79.95 either direct from Freeverse or in convenient boxed form via Apple or Amazon. The 8.1 MB demo is downloadable as well. If you're a forlorn Freehand veteran or facing off sticker shock for Illustrator, take a look.Continue reading Lineform 1.5 update lost in the Macworld shuffle

If you've upgraded recently to firmware 1.1.3 on your iPhone or iPod touch, you'll probably have first downgraded to firmware 1.1.1 and used the popular jailbreakme.com site. Well, it looks like jailbreakme has undergone some massive updates to make this process easier and more optimized. It now automatically oktopreps your 1.1.1 installation, installs the latest Installer.app version (including community sources so you get the new modmyifone source), and cleans up after itself more thoroughly (.svn and youtube.zip files anyone?).
Once you've done the 1.1.1 downgrade bit, be sure to check out the 1.1.2 upgrade guide as well. You'll quickly be on your way to 1.1.3 happiness. Doesn't seem to be working? Make sure you've connect your iPod or iPhone to your computer via the USB cable. There's a handy FAQ available that answers other common questions.

While some companies are busying trying to acquire other companies, big-wigs at Google are singing the praises of the iPhone. Sergey Brin, one of Google's presidents, is an iPhone toter and a happy one at that. Using the Maps application (which is, shockingly enough, powered by Google Maps) Sergey was able to find his way to a hotel rather easily.
Also worth mentioning is that Google is getting most of its mobile web traffic from the iPhone. This lead Eric Schmidt, Google CEO and Apple board member, to state that even though Google is developing their own mobile OS the iPhone will make Google money, in the form of web ad revenues.

The LowKey Stand looks like a very cool concept, judging from the rendering above. It is a stand that you can perch your iMac or Cinema Display on, and slide your new Apple Keyboard underneath. It doesn't stop there, dear reader! The stand also sports an integrated 4 port USB 2.0 hub so you don't have to go fishing around on the back of your Mac for a port.
The LowKey Stand ships on February 15th, and will cost you $59.99.

Filed under: Multimedia, Features, How-tos, iTunes, Podcasts
I picked up Awaken with the recent Macheist deal, and with it I planned to do something I've been thinking about doing for a long time with iTunes: try and figure out a way to wake myself up with a short roundup of the daily podcasts I never seem to find a time to listen to during the day itself.
Getting your Mac to play a playlist on demand at a certain time isn't hard at all (Awaken will do it easily, or Alarm Clock 2 will do it as donationware), but the tough part is getting your podcasts rounded up into a playlist so you can hear all the new shows all in one go. What I wanted to do was create a playlist that contained one of each of the daily podcast shows that iTunes had downloaded for me most recently, and to have that playlist update as the podcasts did, so that every day I had a playlist full of new show episodes set to play one after another.
Easier said than done (and it's not even that easy to say). But I got it done, just by manipulating a few iTunes smart playlists. Here's my short tutorial how.Continue reading How to: Create a smart podcast playlist in iTunes

Every time a new Apple product comes out our friends at iFixit go way beyond the typical unboxing pictures, and take the whole darn thing apart. They have done the same thing with the MacBook Air, and posted a bunch of very high quality pictures.
They found out a few things:
- The battery is very easy to replace (though the procedure requires removing 19 screws).
- The multitouch trackpad uses the same controller as the iPhone making it unlikely we'll see a software update enabling that feature for older MacBooks.
- The processor is very photogenic.

- TUAW Responds: Standalone Contacts App follow-up
Filed under: Hacks, How-tos, iPhone
The other day, I posted about a safe and simple way to add a stand-alone Contacts app to your iPhone's home screen. At that time, I joked that ModMyiFone would probably come out with a user-friendly Installer-based solution about five seconds later. Sure enough they did.
Kyle Matthews, aka poetic_folly, the co-founder of forum and news site ModMyiFone, has uploaded his one-tap fix to Installer's community sources. This solution is based on TUAW reader OJ Dorson's simplified solution, which Dorson posted in our comments. You'll find the patch in Installer's Productivity section, called Contacts | HomeScreen. It's a tiny little update. The entire solution is less than 1 KB in size.
If you'd like to show your appreciation for this little hack, post off your thank you note here and say thank you to OJ in the comments.
