  • Pennsylvania Apple Store planned

Attention, residents of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. It looks like there's an Apple Store in your future.

According to Mcall.com, Apple is scheduled to install a store in the soon-to-be-built addition to the Whitehall Township Mall. Sure enough, a quick look at Apple's jobs page revealed several retail positions are available for that location.

Since the mall's addition hasn't been built yet, we won't ask our operatives in Pennsylvania to start scouring the area for spyshots just yet. But still...be ready.

    Thanks, Jan!

  • RubyCocoa 0.11.0 released

    Filed under:

RubyCocoa is a nifty "bridge" between Ruby and Objective-C (the language of Cocoa), that allows developers to "write full-stack Cocoa applications in Ruby" or a "Cocoa application that mixes Ruby and Objective-C code." It has just received a major update to version 0.11.0. The release notes list the considerable changes; these include compatibility with Ruby 1.9, support for Quartz Composer, support for 64-bit applications and much more. As it happens, I've been slowly learning Ruby, so I'm looking forward to learning how to use RubyCocoa to build Mac applications with Ruby on the back-end.

RubyCocoa is free and open source; it's a free download from SourceForge.

  • Terminal tip: Remind yourself about appointments

Got a place you need to be at 3:00? Want to send yourself a message to get out the door at 2:40? Terminal's "leave" command offers a simple way to remind yourself about your upcoming schedule. leave 0240 waits until 2:35 and then alerts you to get ready to leave with both text and a beep. Reminders occur at 5 minutes and 1 minutes before the time you enter, and then every minute after until you close the terminal window. (You can also kill the process whose id is listed for you when you issue the leave command.)

Leave uses a 12-hour clock so you don't have to worry about whether to use 0240 or 1440. Both produce the same result. All times are assumed to be within the next 12 hours.

You can also use the "+" flag to set a relative time. Say you want to work on a project for just the next hour. Use leave +0100. This sets an alarm for one hour from the current time.

  • iFreePlay "cordless" Shuffle headphones

We recently mentioned a concept from Arriva for iPod Shuffle headphones that integrate the Shuffle into the 'phones themselves. Well Monster Cable (of way-too-expensive-cables fame) has apparently beaten them to the punch with these foldable iFreePlay headphones. As you can see the Shuffle fits into the top of the left can for a "cordless" experience, while still giving access to the controls, etc. While you're certainly not going to be a paragon of fashion walking down the street with these, I could imagine that they might be useful for the gym or a run.

The iFreePlay headphones are available now for $49.95.

  • PiperJaffray analyst predicts Autumn 6G iPod

Gene Munster, a PiperJaffray analyst, is predicting the debut of a widescreen 6G iPod early this autumn, possibly at a $399 price point according to this article at the UK's PC Advisor. While many of us would love a 6G widescreen iPod, would it make sense for the iPod to appear so soon after the introduction of the iPhone? Munster thinks the iPhone will sell a million units in just the first three months after launch. That's a lot of iPhones to move in such a short time. I think a 6G iPod would cut into iPhone sales. If you had the choice between a 6G iPod and an iPhone, would you still get the iPhone?

  • Rumors: Mac Mini Deathwatch

Is the Mac Mini doomed? According to this AppleInsider article, it just may be. Kasper Jade writes that the mini is underpowered compared to the rest of the Mac product line and has seen far fewer hardware refreshes. Add to that relatively low unit margins for the hardware and the emergence of Apple TV, which replaces the mini as a lower-cost media server, and Jade sees that the end approacheth.

I'd be sad if Apple discontinued the mini line even if I've had some issues with its design, particularly its lack of dual monitor support. I know that's a strange quibble to have with an otherwise well priced and moderately powerful unit, but it's the single issue that has kept it off the desktop of many of my friends and colleagues.

    Thanks, fraserdrew.

  • Adobe's CS3 icon branding taken to the next level - the rest of your apps

The new branding Adobe conceived for the new CS3 suite hasn't quite caught on with everyone just yet. Some say the icons are too bland and boring, while others like my friend John decided to take Adobe's 'periodic table of apps' concept to the next level. Via some icons found at sites like InterfaceLIFT and designing a few of his own, John has completely element-ized his entire Dock. In fact, I couldn't fit a decent picture that could display all the icons in this post, so head over to a TUAW gallery pic to take in the entire work of art - or monstrosity - depending on which side of the fence you sit on. Knock yourselves out if you feel like guessing each app - I have the entire list, but it won't be easy to nail 'em all.

[Update: For those that want a copy of most of these icons (some of them are home-made by my friend and not available publicly) as well as a few not shown here, TUAW reader David Mikula has quite a few available at his portfolio site, I Can't Fly. Thanks David!]

  • TUAW Podcast #24: Journler

[Update 2: The direct download link is working fine now, and I pinged the iTunes Store to check our podcast feed again, so it'll take a little time for them The iTunes Store feed has updated so we're good to go. I hope you enjoy the podcast - and of course Journler if you give it a whirl - and please leave feedback as I hope to make a lot more of these in the future (with podcast releases going far more smoothly, of course). Thanks again for your patience.]

This week's podcast is a screencast of an app that I finally 'get' and have subsequently gone nutty for: Philip Dow's Journler. It's an app very much like Yojimbo, Mori and SOHO Notes in that it's a journal/digital junk drawer for your work and life. For roughly fifteen minutes I cover some of the coolest features in Journler that both grabbed my personal attention and caused me to chose Mr. Dow's excellent app as my new blogging tool of choice for penning most of my TUAW and Download Squad posts.

As usual you can pick up a copy of our latest podcast (weighing in at 36MB and 13 minutes on the dot) from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. I'm also please to announce that I finally did some research into why my previous video screencasts weren't iPod-friendly and have fixed the issue. Even though this particular screencast might look a little tiny on a 5G iPod (I captured the entirety of my 1440 x 900 MacBook Pro display, then re-sized to 640 x 398 for this one), you should nevertheless be able to take it with you on that commute you're packing up for. Enjoy!

[Update: We are indeed having trouble serving the podcast at the moment. Hang in there, we'll get this fixed as soon as possible and I'll update this post once we stamp out the issue. Sorry for the trouble.]

  • Flickr Find: Microsoft Amnesty Bin for iPods

    Filed under:

From the entry way at Zune headquarters, we bring you today's Flickr Find: the iPod Amnesty Bin. Yeah sure, it's probably "art" more than it's a real "amnesty bin"--but it says something that upon seeing this picture my heart skipped a beat. It's like seeing adorable puppies in a pound. I instinctively wanted to grab those poor sweet neglected iPods into my arms and give them a proper home. Someone ought to notify the association for the prevention of iPod cruelty.

As one of the posters at the Flickr page points out, this makes you wonder exactly how many of these iPods were bought by the Zune team to seed the bin and make their point--to which I add, I wonder how quickly that bin is emptying as Zune employees wave goodbye for the day.

  • iTunes: Free Thursday

Well, the Canadian and UK Singles of the Week have finally appeared. And it looks like the Faithless single "I Won't Stop" is available for free in pretty much every European store. After checking Switzerland (Thanks Matteo), Italy and Germany, and finding it free in each, I'm going to leave the rest as an exercise for the reader.

Canada: Snakes On the Ladder by Handsome Furs
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Handsome Furs is the side project of Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner. On "Snakes On the Ladder," Handsome Furs combine a crisp, slightly noir-ish guitar line against a windblown backdrop amidst the hiccups of some crisp, pre-programmed drums. The blips mesh against that reverberating guitar sound, creating some sort of Blade Runner world where the hard-boiled past meets the future. Boeckner's voice maintains a steely-eyed intensity throughout.

UK: You Are the One by Shiny Toy Guns
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. "You Are the One" is a tune filled with so many selling points, it could very well have been concocted in a laboratory. Not to say that there's a clinical air to this song from Shiny Toy Guns, but any track that can fuse together a pouty girl singer, post-punk rhythms, electro blips and beats, and rock 'n' roll crunch could not have been made by human hands. Could science be behind this free Single of the Week?

Switzerland: I Won't Stop by Faithless
    [No description provided]

Italy: I Won't Stop by Faithless

  • RapidWeaver 3.6 released

Realmac Software today has released the much-anticipated new version of RapidWeaver, their powerful WYSIWYG software that does a great job of filling the gap between iWeb and Dreamweaver. This new v3.6 ushers in a significant list of new features, such as:

    • Themes Styles - no more digging in HTML and CSS to customize your theme (unless you really want to)
    • 6 completely new themes
    • Snippets - manage chunks of frequently used code instead of copy/pasting or constantly re-typing
    • New Flash Slideshow - completely rewritten and can now pull images from a Flickr feed
    • Improved blog, including tags and inline comment support
    • Easy creation of Lists
    • Detailed Publishing
    • And much, much more

Also, due to RapidWeaver's "skyrocketing" popularity, RealMac Software introduced a redesigned website today that includes a full-featured add-ons section where users can browse themes, plug-ins and code snippets, which of course also means 3rd parties nowhave one central RapidWeaver community where the can highlight their products.

With everything involved, I can completely understand Realmac Software's decision to make v3.6 a paid upgrade - current users (including MacHeist owners) can purchase a v3.6 license for $25, while a full license costs $49. A demo is of course available, so head over to the shiny new Realmac Software site to see everything RapidWeaver has to offer.

  • Widget Watch: DreamHost status

I'm a pretty happy DreamHost customer, though I've been with enough basic hosting plans to realize that many hosts (at least the ones in my price range) might experience some hiccups from time to time. It just seems to be the way hosting is, at least in my tax bracket. Fortunately, DreamHost offers a status website and RSS feed to help customers check in on the network, but a fellow DreamHost customer by the name of Geoff has created a Dashboard widget just to give us one more option for staying on top of things. The widget simply loads the same status text one can read via the website or RSS, but it offers a compact, quick-access window into the world of DreamHost's status without having to refresh a website or add yet another feed to your exponentially increasing RSS list.

  • MacBook performance boost

At first glance, last week's MacBook update did not appear to be anything to write home about. However, some benchmarks are starting to come out that show a non-negligible performance boost on the new 'Books. Macworld has found that the new top end 2.16GHz black MacBook bests previous top end white 2.0GHz white MacBook by an overall 12% (strangely, the different colors somehow tested differently). In fact, the new MacBooks are even giving the top end 2.33GHz MacBook Pro a run for its money in non-graphics intensive applications. MacLife also found an appreciable performance gain. So while it's not Santa Rosa, it is a nice little performance gain.

Update: It's only the low end MacBooks that saw an increase in L2 cache.
