- FlickrMate bundle for TextMate
Filed under: Software, Blogging, Internet Tools, Mods
Brett Terpstra at the Circle Six Design blog just can't seem to stop making cool stuff, especially when it comes to bundles for TextMate. You might know his work from other plug-ins and bundles such as his WordPress theming bundle we mentioned, as well as his most excellent AutoTag bundle for blogging to WordPress blogs.
Not content to work merely with words, Brett has created a FlickrMate bundle that offers an impressive suite of options for interacting with Flickr and embedding images in any HTML or Markdown document you're working on.
You can search the text and tags of just your photos, or across the entirety of Flickr. An 'upload and embed' command is also available for uploading a new image up to Flickr and either linking or embedding it in the document you're working on. You can also browse your own Flickr account with a simple viewer that organizes your photos by sets.
Basically: Brett made one of - if not the - coolest Flickr blogging plug-ins, which just happens to work with the powerful and flexible TextMate, and all he asks for any of his creations is a donation. If you find his hard work useful, I definitely recommend you show him some PayPal love.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Here's some bad news for all you early adopter types who simply MUST have an iPhone on release day. Even though Apple has stated that there will be enough to go around, we still think things will be kind of tight initially. Good think you can pre-order a phone, right?
Wrong. Website The Boy Genius Report claims to have obtained an internal AT&T document which states,
"Sales for the iPhone will be on a first come, first served basis. No wait list of names will be taken and NO pre-selling is allowed."
Oh, well. The document doesn't specify a release date, other than to say "...some time in June," but it does say that the iPhone features "...advanced software 5 years ahead of any phone." That's it, AT&T, drink that Kool-Aid.

Filed under: iPod Family, Found Footage
Wow. iTunes Latino finally has their own silhouetted iPod commercial--and it doesn't look anything like those "seen that done that" soccer or football ads. Yet. This commercial aired last night during Heroes on NBC, where your intrepid TUAW correspondents spent the entire time looking for Apple-related material and not paying any attention to things like Sulu and Audrey from Carnivale or jokes about Superman's unusual fashion choices.
Check it out in glorious QuickTime on Apple's site (you can even watch it in HD).
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Photo Drop (not to be confused with the photo batch processor we mentioned a while back) is a nifty Dashboard Widget that promises "10 sec. photo editing." Basically, you drag an image file from the Finder and drop it on the widget (in the Dashboard). You're then able to resize or trim the image and add one of 8 effects (e.g. reflection, rounded corners, etc.). When you're done you can drag the image off the widget back into the Finder, or save it to the clipboard or Desktop. The Photo Drop site has a couple of screencasts to give you a sense of what it can do.
I think the concept of doing simple edits in a Dashboard widget is a good one, but I'd like to see more functionality (e.g. cropping, rotation, etc.). Photo Drop is a free download from dropping, Inc.

Jon "Wolf" Rentzsch's alternative indie Mac developer conference C4 is once more upon us. Registration is open for the event which takes place Aug 10-12, 2007 in Chicago. The 3 day event costs $512, which includes meals, and features talks from the likes of Adam Engst, Cabel Sasser, Daniel Jalkut, and Wil Shipley to name a few (check out the full schedule).
There are 3 student scholarships available once again this year. All you have to do, if you're a student who would like to be considered for a scholarship, is follow the directions listed here. The attendees each get three votes, which they will use to pick which 3 applicants will receive the scholarships.
This conference is intentionally small, so if you're interested in attending be sure to register sooner rather than later.

Here's something that is going to shock you: I'm a big Star Trek fan. I know, who would have thought that a tech blogger (aka geek) would have a soft spot for Star Trek? Having said that, I never really got into Voyager. It might be because I never had a chance to see them in order, so the show wasn't able to work its way into my heart like the other series. However, I can now buy the first season of Voyager via iTunes for $30.99 (or pick and choose for $1.99 an episode) and give Voyager a second chance.
The price even seems like a bargain seeing as how Amazon is selling the DVD set of Season 1 for close to $100 (though that set comes with extras that the iTunes version lacks).

The Save dialog in Mac OS X (it's the box you get when you press Command-S) can often lead switchers, and inexperienced Mac users, astray. When you save a document you are presented with a dialog box like the one above (this example is from TextEdit) which is a bit limiting. Do I need to use the drop down menu for everything? How do I save this document some place other than the defaults under the "Where" pop-up menu? Read on to find out how to master any Save dialog box on Mac OS X.Continue reading Mac 101: Mastering the Save Dialog

Filed under: Hardware, Portables, Internet, Mac mini, Macbook Pro, MacBook
The guys over at EVDOinfo.com have discovered that current Intel Macs already support 3G EVDO cards. Basically what they did is rip the PCI Express Mini Airport wireless card out of a Mac mini and replace it with a previously activated EVDO PCI Express Mini card taken from a Novatel U720 USB EVDO modem. After installing the recent WWAN update (by bypassing the hardware check), the Mac mini recognized the card and established a connection to the Sprint network. They note that this makes the Mac mini an absolutely perfect carputer (except for some antenna issues).
They speculate that this should work on the MacBook (Pro) as well, but obviously nobody wants to lose Airport connectivity to gain WWAN support. However, this does seem to show that there's no technical limitation to adding EVDO connectivity to next generation Mac portables.
