- Apple "wrestles" with 3rd party iPhone apps
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Steve Jobs, Apple, iPhone
Will the iPhone open up to 3rd party apps? Steve Jobs says that Apple is wrestling with the decision, according to Tech.co.uk.Contradicting earlier statements that the iPhone would definitely be a closed platform, Steve Jobs cracked open the door a bit. Supporting this semi-statement is the upcoming Developing Websites for iPhone session at WWDC.
Apple may be thinking of web based apps as their third party "in" to the iPhone. Developer Bruce Gee of Gee Three dropped us a note saying that "In many ways, this is a very open approach to getting lots of new functionality on the iPhone. We'll have to wait and see how these apps work over the network, but it could be interesting."

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family
Many high school students are happy to get science projects done quietly, without attracting the attention of, say, the Associated Press. Not Jay Thaker. His research shows that an iPod held 2 inches from the chest can disrupt pacemaker function in some patients, which has caused a torrent of media furor over this previously unstudied and unquantified risk.
Here at TUAW we don't give medical advice [You got that right. -Ed.] and we don't like to point out when big media stories about Apple products are silly, disproportionate or plain goofy... well, actually we do like to point that out. With all due respect to those who might be directly affected by this discovery, some points to consider:
- The study only examined iPods, no other portable media players (HD or flash-based) and so far I haven't found anything that says exactly what type of iPod was used. Is it the Shuffle that's causing skipped beats? What happens if I use a Sandisk player or a Zune? We need a control group... what about a vintage Sony Walkman?
- This isn't the first time we've been told portable electronic devices and pacemakers don't mix. Ten years ago, the first reports of cellphone interference came out. Users were (prudently) told to keep phones at least 6 inches from their chests, and the fuss blew over.
- One of the study's noted concerns was that the presence of an iPod could cause a physician to misread pacemaker telemetry during an exam. I'm not an expert, but are there any doctors that are in the habit of letting patients listen to their iPods during physical exams? Most of the time, one of you is naked, and hopefully it's not the doctor.
- As some of the study authors have noted, there's a reason this hasn't been a big issue: the overlap of "iPod owners" and "pacemaker patients" has not been a substantial population.
It's clear who the real losers are in this situation: the folks who, only a few days ago, introduced a new portable music player aimed at the DJ market: the Pacemaker. Ooch, that's gonna leave a mark.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

- Salling Clicker v3.5 brings new Front Row controls, device support and much more
Filed under: Hardware, OS, Software, Cool tools, Productivity
One of the major things I miss about switching away from a Windows Mobile or even Sony Ericsson mobile phone is Salling Clicker - just about the best darn software I've ever seen for controlling your Mac with a mobile phone or PDA. Clicker offers a wide array of customizable controls with which you can enable your device to control everything from iTunes to Keynote, and even do things like pause music when a call comes in or lock your display if you walk too far away from your Mac. While I cross my fingers that Salling Software can create a BlackBerry client sooner than later, the rest of you can enjoy today's v3.5 update which ushers in a slew of new features and wider support for yet more devices.
At the top of the feature list is support for Front Row, potentially eliminating the need to pack an Apple Remote when venturing out. Other new features include: improved iTunes functionality with quick access to current playlists and more browsing options, support for Windows Mobile 6 and Symbian 9.x devices, much easier Wi-Fi connections for Symbian and WinMo devices, improved Keynote and PowerPoint functionality and much more (I should also note that Salling Clicker for Windows now supports Vista as well).
Check out the main product page of Salling Clicker for Mac if you're new to the possibilities of this excellent software, or take a look at the v3.5 press release to get a look at what's new for you seasoned clickers. A demo is of course available, while a license costs a mere $23.95.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, iPhone
The time is upon us ladies, gents and iPhone hopefuls - the videos for the Insanely Great Tees iPhone Contest are in, and now it's time for us all to chose a winner from the finalists. Embedded in this post at Insanely Great News are ten YouTube videos created by the chosen finalists. Towards the bottom of the post is an area where you can vote for The One Video to Rule Them All, as well as six honorable mentions.
Personally? I think Garbled Text Messages takes the cake for its excellence in production and execution. I'm a little bothered that most of the videos focused on just one specific feature or advantage of the iPhone instead of advertising a little more broadly, but it ultimately looks like everyone had fun which is what matters most.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
