- Open a beer with your iPod
The weather in my neighborhood was just beautiful last weekend. We were out on the deck, listening to music on the iPod and enjoying a few drinks. If only I could have opened my beer with my iPod. Ooh, that would be the realization of a dream...
The folks at Mophie have answered my call. Their Bevy bottle opener and key chain is a small, plastic case for the iPod shuffle that attaches to your keys. The controls and headphone port remain accessible, and the flip side features a bottle opener. Because, you now, listening to music on headphones, opening a bottle and driving your car all at the same time is a really good idea. You can pick one up for $15US.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: OS, Software, UNIX / BSD
FileXaminer is like the Finder's built-in Get Info (⌘ - i) on steroids. The features are manifold, allowing you to edit permissions and ownership, dates, type and creator codes and much more. It's particularly handy for editing file attributes that the Finder simply won't let you touch. There are some very basic icon and image edition functions as well, but it is mostly a GUI for editing UNIX level file attributes.
In addition, FileXaminer also adds contextual menu items with handy functions like copying a file path (for use in the terminal, for example) and Super Delete.
FileXaminer is $10 and a demo is available.

It's spring time, and along with our tulips and vegetables, new Apple Stores are beginning to grow. Let's check in on the garden, shall we?
Construction continues on Apple Store Boston. If you take a look at the live webcam, you'll notice that the foundation had been cleared away, and the facade has been erected to keep away curious Bostonians. Well, Bostonians without webcams at least.
Meanwhile, in New York City, the store that will occupy the space at 401 W. 14th St. is seeing some activity. Workers have gutted the interior and put up some scaffolding. We're pretty sure Apple will eventually take those billboards down.
Finally, Apple Store Pioneer Place in Portland, Oregon has been closed for major renovations. Cash registers have been replaced with those hand held devices and the Genius Bar has been moved to the back of the store. This is a high traffic location, and its hoped that the new floorplan will ease congestion.

Attention Camino users: Version 1.0.4 of your favorite browser is now available. I go back and forth between Camino and Firefox myself, and I've got to say that Camino is nice and snappy on my MacBook Pro. Changes in 1.0.4 include:
- Improved ad blocking (Yay!)
- Several security issues fixed
- Import iCab 3 bookmarks
- Camino can create/restore a backup of your bookmarks

Whether you're disappointed or pleased at the four-month delay for Leopard, there's no question that the progress, or lack thereof, on Apple's next OS release has been big news. With all the focus on 10.5, it seems to me that we've lost sight of all the wonderful things about our current main squeeze... so here goes: the top ten things we still love about Tiger.
#10: Still runs on the vintage hardware. Officially, Tiger installs on any Mac with built-in FireWire; unofficially, any machine with a G3 processor and adequate RAM will rock the casbah. I've seen happy campers on original Bondi iMacs and USB-only iBooks with Tiger, although most folks on low-end gear will need to disable Spotlight to get adequate performance.

Our readers are a wily bunch. Take Connor, for instance: he was surfing the web and noticed an unfamiliar Get A Mac ad appearing on the page, so he fired up his trusty copy of Snapz Pro and captured it for posterity. It's not yet on Apple's website, but we wanted you to enjoy it first. That's love, right there.
The video title is "Vista Nightmare," but I am personally thinking of it as "PC in a Box." You'll see.
Thanks Connor!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

One nice feature that Apple is starting to add to some of their application is multi-library support. For instance, if you launch iTunes or iPhoto with the option key held down you'll get a dialog box asking you which library you want to use. Well rooSwitch takes this idea to the next level by making it possible to have different "profiles" for nearly any OS X application. The profiles include preferences, caches, and even application data like the aforementioned iTunes libraries, all storied in a single .rooSwitch bundle. To use it you just drop the icon of the application you want to create a profile for onto the rooSwitch window and you can then create multiple profiles that you can easily switch between using the radio buttons. rooSwitch can even be used to backup application profiles and transfer them between machines or accounts. rooSwitch was originally to help developers test different scenarios, making it a good way to test (especially beta) software without losing preferences and application data.
rooSwitch is $14.95 and a demo is available. In addition, there is a free lite version that is limited to six applications (Mail.app, Address Book, Safari, iTunes, iPhoto and Stickies).
