- Amazon launching DRM-free MP3 download service
Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, Internet Tools, iTunes
Around this time last year I wrote that Amazon had scrapped ideas for a music download service to focus on their movie streaming service. Turns out that was wrong. Today Amazon has announced that they will, in fact, be launching their very own downloadable music store. The kicker? All downloads will be in MP3 format (so you can play 'em on your iPod) and there won't be any DRM. Amazon claims to have 12,000 labels signed up (I had no idea that 12,000 music labels existed). Pricing hasn't been discussed yet.
Look for the store on Amazon.com later this year.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

As if it weren't enough that you got free calls on Mother's Day, now the Skype Internet telephony client for Mac has been updated to version 2.6. New in this version: better echo cancellation, editing of SkypeOut contact numbers, calls to Skype Prime providers, bug fixes and more. Complete change list is here.
Now, if someone can help me figure out how to adjust my Bluetooth headset volume while on a Skype call, I'll be a happy man.
Thanks Nik!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

You know how it goes. The dumpy guy is supposed to be the PC and the cool guy is the Mac. Right? David Letterman decided to redefine the Mac vs PC conflict, enlisting Chris Elliott to play Mac. Here's Letterman's take on the whole phenomenon. Let's just say that Mac doesn't make out quite so well as he usually does. And Chris Elliott is no Justin Long.

This week's Ask TUAW takes us into questions about text manipulation (converting to Title Case), networking problems, managing the Trash, using multiple iPhoto libraries, and streaming media from a Xbox 360 . Remember new Mac users and Switchers who are enjoying our Mac 101 series should feel very welcome to post questions for Ask TUAW; we're happy to take questions from all levels. Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Internet Tools
Twittervision and Flickrvision are sister projects that mashup their respective communities in real time with Google Maps, providing a (somewhat summarized) play-by-play world map of what's happening on Twitter and Flickr. While watching either of these services can easily become a hobby, of sorts, or even a great reason for your boss to hire you - why not blame all that wasted time on idle computing cycles instead? Dave Troy - creator of Twittervision - tweeted Chris Bailey's release of a Mac OS X screen saver that can display either of these services. Simply download, install and go into the Desktop & Screen Saver System Preferences pane to chose which service (or even 'Random') to display for your screen saver. Now you can allow either of these services to completely dominate your desktop, instead of living comfortably side by side with anything else you're doing that might actually be productive.
The screen saver is fun and all (though I personally don't use any screen saver), but I was surprised to see that the scrolling animations were pretty choppy on my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM. I don't know if this is a performance issue with Chris's screen saver or the web services themselves, but I still found it to be anenjoyableunfortunate distraction from finishing this post.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
It's been a while since we've hit the Automator beat; too long, in my opinion. And what better way to bring everyone's favorite little automate-able robot back into the TUAW spotlight than with the Flickr upload Automator action from James Pitts? After some simple instructions for installing, this action is prime for all sorts of image-related workflows, such as a Folder Action that allows you to drop pictures onto a folder to simultaneously add them to iPhoto, Aperture and Flickr (with tags) - all without lifting a finger (well, that is, if you don't count the original finger you had to lift to drop the photos on the folder in the first place).
I ran into a catch getting this installed, however: following James' instructions to the letter, I couldn't get Automator to see the action when I installed it for all users - it would only work when installed in my own user's Home directory. That isn't too big of a deal, personally, since I'm the only user on my machine, but I figured this was worth noting for those who work on multi-user Macs.

Welcome back to Mac 101; everyone please take your seats, and if you're chewing gum, I hope you brought enough for everybody! Today, rather than suggesting a feature or tool that you might use on your Mac, I'd like to discuss some things to avoid -- 5 common Mac-istakes that can stop you in your tracks.
Some quick history: Back in 2006, our own Damien Barrett posted his short list of Mistakes Made by New Mac Users, which drew over 100 responses. Dan Warne did a lovely job summarizing the comments. Recently, Dan Knight at lowendmac.com did a meta-analysis of Dan W.'s list and parsed out what could be easily fixed or made less error-prone. All are useful if you want to avoid some of the most prevalent 'failure modes' for new Mac users, but most of them are simple UI missteps that don't do real damage.Continue reading Mac 101: Things NOT to do on your Mac
