  • Shimo 1.0

VPNs are a staple of corporate life nowadays. They create a secure connection from your computer to your company's computers using a 'Virtual Private Network.' This allows you to access company documents via public networks in a secure fashion.

Cisco is a big player in the VPN market, and luckily for us OS X users there is a Mac client that allows connections from Macs to Cisco VPN appliances. Sadly, it sucks. The interface isn't Mac like, and while it works it doesn't offer up any nice features like Keychain integration or automatic reconnects. Enter Shimo, from nexUmoja. This little program offers up an alternative UI to the Cisco client that adds a number of features including Keychain integration, Growl notifications, and auto reconnecting.

All of this is great and as a user of Cicso's VPN client you would think I would use this without hesitation. Sadly, the whole point of VPNs is to make your communications more secure, and I simply don't trust a third party app sitting between my encrypted data and the Cisco VPN appliance. That's just me though, I'm slightly paranoid.

  • AutoRate: iTunes rating done right

I don't know about you, but ratings are one of those iTunes features that I'd like to use but never seem to find the time. Rating each song individually is such a drag, and I'm a busy, powerful, and influential blogger. I don't have that kind of time. Luckily for busy iTuners everywhere AutoRate is there to help. As you might have gathered from the name, this little application automatically rates your iTunes tracks (you can specify a playlist, or have it do your whole library) using this formula:

    rating = (100 * ( (play frequency - lower) / (upper - lower) ) - skips per month * 5

I ran it against my iTunes library of 7161 items. The whole process took less than 10 minutes on my MacBook, and the results were spot on.

    AutoRate is free.

  • iTunes collects season finales for you

Say what you will about the video quality of iTunes content, but it sure is convenient to download an episode or two of a show that you missed when it aired. The web elves that run the iTunes Store are determined to make it even more convenient it would seem, as they have gathered all the TV season finales available for purchase on one page [iTunes link]. Everything from American Dad to Battlestar Galatica is listed for your viewing pleasure. Be sure to check back because shows are going to be added daily.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to find out if Sylar is stopped (warning, if you don't like spoilers I wouldn't click that Sylar link).

  • PHPture: Aperture on the web

PHPture is very cool, and almost makes me wish I used Aperture to organize my photos. PHPture leverages the web technologies that are baked into every Mac running OS X to enable sharing of your Aperture library over the web. PHPture is limited to serving up webpages from the Mac that has Aperture installed on it by default, but I don't see why you can't serve up PHPture from a remote server that has access to your Aperture library.

PHPture is open source, requires PHP 5 (which isn't included with OS X) and has been tested on OS X 10.4.9.

    Thanks, Nik.

  • Voyager: Now you see it, now you don't

What is it with the iTunes Store and Star Trek? I blogged a few days ago that the first season of Star Trek Voyager was available for purchase via the iTunes Store. We then got a report that the episodes were 'abridged,' though I can't verify that for myself. Now, Voyager is no where to be seen on the iTunes Store. Keep in mind this isn't the first time Star Trek has disappeared from iTunes, only to warp back onto it at a later date.

Here's hoping Capt. Janeway can get her crew and ship out of whatever calamity has made them go missing.

  • Apple releases "Lost" iPod game

I've heard many people complain that the plot for "Lost" has seemed to wander off lately. Apparently, it has found its way to the iTunes Store.

Apple has released a "Lost" game for iPod [iTunes link]. It features a storyline by the show's writers, familiar settings (like Black Rock and the hatch) and several "quests" to complete, like assisting the wounded at the crash site for hunting for useful goods. Sounds like fun.

The Lost game requires a 5th generation iPod with Software version 1.2 or later, and costs about five bucks (US).
