- MacBook performance boost
At first glance, last week's MacBook update did not appear to be anything to write home about. However, some benchmarks are starting to come out that show a non-negligible performance boost on the new 'Books. Macworld has found that the new top end 2.16GHz black MacBook bests previous top end white 2.0GHz white MacBook by an overall 12% (strangely, the different colors somehow tested differently). In fact, the new MacBooks are even giving the top end 2.33GHz MacBook Pro a run for its money in non-graphics intensive applications. MacLife also found an appreciable performance gain. Given the slight clock speed increase, the performance boost is attributed mostly to a doubling of the L2 cache from 2MB to 4MB. So while it's not Santa Rosa, it is a nice little performance gain.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The iPod is the 21st century Walkman and it seems that Sony isn't content to let Apple potentially dominant the internet communication market with the iPhone. They have teamed up with BT (that's British Telecom to you) to offer a number of new features on the PSP. The new features include video and voice calls, though all the features depend on being connected to the internet in order to function. Might this make the PSP into an iPhone competitor? Considering that 28 million of these little things are out there, it just might.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
Despite the fact that no one can even buy an iPhone yet, people are already describing what its next set of features ought to be. There's a thread at the iPhone forum that lists what they're calling "The Seven Most Wanted iPhone Widgets" (Basically, they just picked seven Dashboard widgets they'd like ported to the iPhone). I'm not as convinced. Here they are:
- iTunes Stats. Basically, this displays an exhaustive amount of trivial information regarding your iTunes library, like "Number of songs with no artist info" and "Number of playlists." I can't imagine strolling through the mall with my iPhone and suddenly needing to know how many of my songs are unrated. But that's me.
- Hangman. Yeah, OK. Games are fun.
- RSS Feeds. Call me an old stick-in-the-mud, but I can't think of a single RSS feed that I must have immediately available every second of the day. I figure I can wait the thirty minutes it may take me to get to my computer. Pass.
- Sudoku. See #2.
- Harmonic. Ok, so it *might* be fun to confirm a song's lyrics on-the-go. I said "might."
- Flappie. Um, no.
- TV Scheduler. I already have a tool that I use to monitor what's on my TV. It's called, "my TV." It works great.

Filed under: Accessories, Apple Corporate, iPod Family
It seems that Apple's legal department have got their knickers in a knot* over an ad campaign for the iGasm, which is a rather intimate accessory for the iPod. The ads look just like the original "silhouette" iPod spots (see the ad at right), just not so much, you know, for the family.
Now, this certainly isn't the first iPod sex toy we've seen (or benign iPod case that only looks like a sex toy), nor is it the first time Apple has sued such a manufacturer for their advertising. And it probably won't be the last.
*I know, I know. I just couldn't resist.

Italy's first Apple Store opened this past March, in Rome. Today, setteB.IT is reporting that another Italian store is planned for a mall in Marcianise. We say "planned" because the mall that will supposedly house the store hasn't even been built yet, but is scheduled to open in September of this year.
If any TUAW'ers in the Marcianise area see any signs of a new store, please let us know!

So would an iPhone that you could buy outright with prepaid service appeal to you? If priced attractively, would it make the difference in your buying decision? BoyGeniusReport has tracked down some curious iPhone codes: "We can infer from the 3 codes received that the iPhone will be available to...postpaid users...[S]ince the masters of prepaid can purchase these, anyone will be able to snatch one up, whether they are in contract or not." Of course, we have no idea how much these plans will cost and what the final cost of phone + plan will turn out to be but surely the idea of a contract-free iPhone is appealing, right? Electronista thinks AT&T may have reconsidered it's in-network-only stance.

TUAW reader Jason wrote in asking us how to switch between open tabs in Safari. If you're using tabbed browsing in Safari, it may not be immediately obvious how to navigate other than to click on the tab you want to view. Fortunately, Apple did build in keyboard shortcuts: to cycle left between tabs, type Command-Shift-Left Arrow or Command-Shift-[. To cycle right, use Command-Shift-Right Arrow or Command-Shift-].
Firefox uses a different approach. To select a tab, hold down the Command key while pressing a tab number. Command-1 selects the first tab, Command-4 the fourth. (For the curious, in Safari, this Command-Number approach selects the nth item in your Bookmark bar that is not a folder.)
More after the jump...

Filed under: iPod Family, Rumors, Cult of Mac
Imagine an iPod-shaped transformer that kicked butt and took no prisoners. That treat might await us in the upcoming Transformers movie according to iLounge. A 12-inch iPod supposedly turns into a "little killing machine", presumably scaring an entire generation away from MP3 players. Ethical considerations aside, that's a nice boost power-wise from merely damaging hearing when using unwise volume control. As for the picture here? It's the other kind of iPod transformer.

Filed under: iPod Family, Cult of Mac
USA Today recently chose 25 inventions they felt had changed people's lives in the last 25 years. Along with cell phones, laptops and DVDs, USA Today chose iPod as their #8 life changing gadget. It has, they suggest, reinvented the way people walk down sidewalks. Presumably before the iPod, no one had apparently ever heard of, let alone used, the Sony Walkman. But that's just a small quibble. We here at TUAW aren't argumentative. If USA Today says that the iPod is life changing, who are we to argue?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It looks like the iTunes hamsters finally woke up, got on their exercise wheels and have been working hard at updating the store. Here are a lot more free items to supplement those posted yesterday. Unfortunately, Canada still doesn't seem to have posted a Single of the Week--but Germany did. One of the first Kostenlos singles I've seen in months.
US Music
US: Home by Great Northern
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. This week, we look to the southern end of California in order to find Great Northern. The group was formed by Solon Bixler and Rachel Solte as a way to funnel their wide-open, expansive musical daydreams into something concrete. The result: big waves of rumbling guitars over harmonies that would sparkle in the dusk were it possible. This dreamy indie rock, with its graceful arrangements and Solte's gossamer vocal leads, makes for a great Single of the Week.US: Solta o Frango (Edit) by Bonde do Role
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Bondo do Rolé is probably the coolest thing happening in Brazil right now, and if you know anything about Brazil, that's a huge compliment. These two kids have integrated the party sounds of the Brazilian favela with elements of Miami booty bass and American electro-pop. The result is "Solta o Frango," a track that will blow up your speakers, get the party started right, and have everyone within earshot heading for the dance floor.US: Lightning by Eric Church
This track from Eric Church begins with an atmospheric, electronic swirl before the acoustic guitar announces Church's telltale twang. It sets the mood for "Lightning," a plea for forgiveness from the "cold jailhouse floor" as Church takes on the role of a prisoner on death row. Intro aside, this is a hard-living traditional country tune on which Church delivers on all fronts. Get this track today - it's our free Discovery DownloadInternational
Germany: I Won't Stop by Faithless
Kostenlos. (Thanks Volkmar.)France: I Love Death by Lodger
Still showing last week's selection.
Canada: Still no SOTW posted.

In a previous Ask TUAW we covered a few of the panoramic photo stitching options available for the Mac. Now another tool for doing this has come to my attention and is probably worth a look for anyone interested in making panoramic pictures from multiple photos. Hugin is a cross-platform GUI for the Panorama Tools open source project created by Professor Helmut Dersch. It has many detailed options for stitching photos together exactly the way you want it done. As such it's probably not the easiest panorama tool to use, but by the same token it looks quite powerful. You may want to check out some of the tutorials available to get a sense of what it can do.
Hugin is a free download from sourceforge.

Filed under: Tips and tricks, Terminal Tips, Security
In OS X, you can always toss a file onto the command line instead of laboriously typing out a complete path name because Terminal supports drag and drop. Over at Murphymac, Murphy has posted a video showing you how to create a shell script using DES3 encryption to protect your files. It takes advantage of this drag and drop support so you can basically run the script and drop the file you want to encrypt. Even if you're not all that interested in encrypting your files, this videocast shows how to think about creating shell scripts with a particularly interactive OS X
