  • iPhone on June 20th? Sure, whatever

Last Thursday, CNBC reported a launch date for the iPhone of June 20. This sent Apple stock upwards on Friday, but now our sister blog BloggingStocks points out that there's basically no hard information on the exact launch date, and that the CNBC report was apparently based on the word of a single AT&T phone store employee. The AP did a little legwork, contacting several AT&T stores in New York and getting all kinds of dates from June 11 to 22. Official spokesmen from Apple and AT&T declined to give anything more specific than what we've known all along-"late June." Even the slightly-more-high-end approach of calling headquarters hasn't locked down the date.

So what to make of all this? Well, BloggingStocks is surely right to conclude that AT&T store clerks probably know next to nothing about the actual timetable. Further, there's something kind of crazy about the frenzy that one random AT&T store employee can cause with what was little more than speculation. We'll see the iPhone when we see it, and we'll know more at WWDC. We can hope that Apple does a little better than with the Apple TV release.

  • TUAW Tip: Preview has basic text, cropping and editing tools

We sing the praises of plasq's fantastic private beta Skitch tool for making it dead simple to capture, edit and share screenshots with a good variety of online communities, but Mac OS X's own Preview app for viewing images and PDFs isn't without at least a couple of these basic tools. These definitely are not on par with Skitch's capabilities, but as you can see, Preview offers text and oval circling annotation tools, and that Select Tool can help you crop an image (or even multiple pages of a PDF). As far as getting your work out of Preview and off to wherever it's going, the best you can do is save a new copy of the image and manually move or upload it, but hey: if you don't need all the features Skitch has to offer at it's yet-to-be-set commercial price, Preview just might do the job for you.

  • Widget Watch: Gift-It!

Tasty Apps says of their gift managing widget Gift-It! that it "pushes Apple's Dashboard to the limit!" It's a neat idea: You create entries for all the folks you might need to buy gifts for (including yourself of course!). Gift-It! then installs a new button in the Safari toolbar (thanks to the somewhat controversial SIMBL). Now when you're browsing a site and see something that would be good to get for somebody on your list, you need only click the package button and you'll get a dialog box that allows you to select the recipient. That page's URL will then be automatically added to the appropriate gift list, which you can access back in the Dashboard widget. Here you can see how I've generously allotted myself a new camera from B&H. You can also enter birthdays into the widget for future reminders.

I have to admit that the widget is a little bit confusing to use (I can't quite figure out how to move something from the Wish List to the Gift Box), but the Safari integration is seriously clever. I think Tasty Apps is right to suggest that this is one of the more advanced widgets out there, and certainly has the potential to be useful (though I already do something similar to track gift ideas with del.icio.us tags, though without the Dashboard eye candy and birthday reminders of course).

Gift-It! is presently in beta and is a free download.

  • WiFind replacement Airport menubar item

WiFind from Tasty Apps is a neat little replacement for Airport menubar item that adds some cool features. Specifically it shows right in the drop-down menu both whether or not networks are locked and also each WAP's signal strength. This is surely a much handier way to check all those networks at your local coffee shop, rather than just trying to connect to each one. It is worth pointing out, however, that WiFind does its magic via a SIMBL plugin.

WiFind is $8 and a demo is available.
