- TUAW Desktop of the Week
This week's TUAW Desktop hails from Flickr user form953, who has managed to turn both Dashboard and the Dock more or less Inside Out. The iStat pro widget is running in Development Mode, which is what allows it to live on the Desktop, separate from the Dashboard. I'm not entirely sure how form953 managed to pin the Dock underneath the menubar, however; I've seen that option in one utility or another, but have never used it so I'm blanking on which apps allow for this. Here's a list of what else form953 has going on here, thankfully provided along with this shot at Flickr:
- wallpaper and Disctop from mekentosj.com
- iStat pro widget running in developer mode
- Bytecontroller
- SMARTReporter
- Spirited Away
- VirtueDesktops (which, sadly, is no longer being developed due to Leopard's upcoming Spaces feature)
- Google Desktop for Mac
- Chip Set icons

- Flickr Find: More pics of zombie attack on Apple Store SF
Filed under: Humor, Retail, Cult of Mac, Flickr Find
As we Twittered a few hours ago, CNET reporter Declan McCullagh narrowly escaped zombie-fication as a 'flash mob' of faux zombies descended on San Francisco's tony retail district on May 25. While other stores blocked the living dead from entering, apparently Apple employees were jockeying for ideal position to snap pictures of the shuffling, decaying spawn of hell. Now that's thinking really different.
In addition to McCullagh's photo gallery, reader Steve Rhodes has posted his pics of the invasion on Flickr for all to enjoy. Just remember: you've got to attack the head.
Thanks Steve!

Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Internet Tools, Mods
Since I solved a number of the issues plaguing my Mail account setup - including a workaround to kinda use Gmail over IMAP (more on that soon) - I have sunk my teeth back into Apple's excellent email client. Now I'm pretty happy with using a few plug-ins like Scott Morrison's stellar MailTags 2 and Stefan Schüßler's Mail.appetizer (which we have previously mentioned at length here and here), though I am continually surprised by the number of plug-ins that endow Mail with everything from better support for Windows Office attachments, to creating events from messages and even more fine-toothed Smart Mailboxes for your Address Book contacts. One only needs to run a search for Mail at MacUpdate to see what I'm talking about, but I figured I could round up a few of these plug-ins just to give you an idea.Continue reading Apple Mail plug-in roundup

Giles Turnbull over at MacDevCenter has an interesting look at independent Mac developers working in the UK. In many ways, their experience is similar to that of indie US devs, but they do face a few special challenges, like pricing their products in dollars. Because the exchange rate favors the pound right now versus the dollar, they end up having to charge higher prices for US customers than they would otherwise.
Overall, though, they appreciate what Apple does for developers, even if Apple engineers do sometimes forget that the UK is eight hours ahead of Cupertino. One big thing that nearly all of them come back to is the need for more pre-built frameworks like Sparkle (which provides automatic updating for a slew of products). Overall, it's an interesting read for seeing how things work on the other side of the pond.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

SOHO Notes, the information manager/junk drawer application from Chronos, has hit version 6 and adds some nice new features. Perhaps in response to Yojimbo, there is new keyword and smart folder functionality. There's also new support for scanning directly into SOHO Notes a la Yep, as well as new custom forms for data entry and 256-bit encryption.
I used SOHO Notes' predecessor, StickyBrain, before switching over to Yojimbo. While I prefer the latter for its use of Core Data instead of OpenBase, I do think Chronos does a very good job of seeing what sort of features its competitors are offering and integrating them into SOHO Notes, making it one of the most full-featured of the note-taking applications on the Mac.
SOHO Notes 6.0 is $39.99 ($25 for upgrades from previous versions, including StickyBrain) and a demo is available.

Filed under: Accessories, Hardware, Reviews, Macbook Pro, MacBook
While attracting dirt and grime is a hazard of owning a notebook, the neat-freak and 'oh my gosh this is expensive computer equipment' portions of my brains have always been bothered by how icky my MacBook Pro can get over time. I've tried a few products that are designed to protect one portion or another of a MacBook Pro from dirt, and Power Support's Track Pad Film is just such a product. It comes as two separate pieces - one for the mouse button and another for the track pad - and Power Support sells them as a two-pack so you get a backup in case you make a mistake or have a friend who could use some track pad protection.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: OS, Cult of Mac
When a leading computer publication has a revolving-door editor-in-chief hiring policy, it can make other weird editorial decisions look sane and prudent by comparison. Exhibit A: the annual PC World "100 Best" feature, which presents the 100 best products of 2007... online in May, and in print for July. Not even half the year has gone by, but the farsighted crew at PCW has already figured out the best of the bunch! Might as well take the rest of the year off, then...
The real reasons that the 100 Best comes out mid-year (covering the end of 2006 and the start of 2007) are detailed in a post from once-and-current big kahuna Harry McCracken. It comes down to legacy scheduling of the product awards around the June date of the no-longer-extant PC Expo trade show. That's a relief; I was worried that we were changing the calendar again.
Anyway, more to the point: the list is top-heavy with some big Mac products, including TUAW darling Parallels Desktop at #6 (the top-ranked application on any desktop platform, not counting #1 Google Apps Premier Edition), Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger at #9 and AppleTV at #11. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor that powers new Macs is a top pick at #2. Noticeably absent from the top 100 was the latest hotness from Redmond, which may correlate with PC World's comment on the Tiger ranking: "Name a good Vista feature that goes beyond what's in Tiger. Yeah, we can't either." Brrrrr.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

This one has been climbing up the bloggeist for a few weeks, and it's a fine apertif for the start of the holiday weekend. Copywriter Laurie McGuinness, moonlighting as a commercial parody director, made a series of four Mac/PC ad spoofs in early 2007, with PC as the businesslike, successful protagonist and Mac as the geeky, freelance hand-to-mouth sidekick. (Is it just me, or does the guy playing PC look like a thinner, less crazy version of John Dvorak?)
All four ads are viewable on McGuinness' site or on YouTube, and they're mostly moderately funny; one exception is the 'Music' spot, which suggests that iPod users are selfish goobers who don't like to share music. Poor form!
If you've got a favorite Mac/PC ad parody, let me know in the comments and I'll highlight the top choices in a weekend post.
Thanks, Beth!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Audio, iPod Family, Cult of Mac, Odds and ends
The Ocala Star-Banner has an interesting story involving an 'iPod exchange,' where two of their reporters decided to swap iPod shuffles for a few days to get a taste for each others' musical interests. The key to their experiment, at least in their eyes, is the fact that they specifically used shuffles, so neither could scan through the library on the iPod or even tell what songs they were listening to; it was literally more about the experience of what music the iPod would serve up, rather than skimming through a simple list of artists and songs with which one could pass a musical judgement.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Rumors, Video, Found Footage, iPhone
Could this possibly be the first video taken by an iPhone? Over at iPhone Matters, Gregory Ng posts that he received a copy of this video from an Apple Store employee in California. In the video, you can see what appears to be an iPhone appearing on the iMac screen as recorded by its iSight. The video is not the highest quality and Ng writes that the sender compressed the video before sending it over email. What do you think? Real or hoax?

Tide is teaming up with the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans to help rebuild 10 homes in the St. Bernard parish by selling T-shirts. Everyone who buys a tee also gets entered in a contest to win this funky custom iPod and a $50 iTunes gift card. They're giving away one of these iPods a week until the contest finishes on June 25.I love the way they overlaid the scroll wheel with the Tide logo, but what I want to know is how that scroll wheel feels like after the customized art has been applied. Is it possible to do a custom mod like that but retain the feel and response of the original scroll wheel material?

DLO is shipping yet another iPod dock, but this one is billed as "the world's first luxury iPod car accessory." I don't know exactly what that is supposed to mean, but the TransDock Deluxe does include a RF remote which appears to strap onto your steering wheel for iPod control without removing your hands from 10 and 2 o'clock like your high school driving instructor insisted (or, looking at the picture, maybe you'll be okay sliding down to 9 o'clock). Anyway, the kit has the standard cigarette lighter charger and FM modulator, but also adds some cool extras like a video out jack for an optional rear-seat video screen and even a powered USB port for charging your phone or other accessories.
The TransDock Deluxe $129.99 from DLO.

A while back we mentioned some ways to develop a meta-data tagging system for your files to be used together with, or even as a replacement for, standard hierarchical organization. TagBot is another tool designed to help make tagging easy. Basically it allows you to tag files either by dragging and dropping them onto the appropriate tag in a "Tag Palette" or by selecting the tag from a contextual menu. The tags themselves are added to the Spotlight comments of the files for searching, etc. Nick Santilli over at The Apple Blog has a nice little screencast that gives a good sense of how it works.
TagBot is $20 and a demo (limited to six tags) is available for download.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Multimedia, Video, Internet Tools
Over at mac mojo, the Microsoft Mac Business Unit blog, Blair Neumann is expressing his excitement about Silverlight. As we mentioned before, Silverlight is Microsoft's cross-platform, Flash alternative, which is now available in beta form for both Safari and Firefox. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this (as Eddie Hargreaves over at the Apple Blog points out) is that Silverlight will return official Microsoft support for Windows Media streaming to the Mac, "including HD video up to 720p." Since Microsoft stopped development of the Windows Media Player for Mac the primary Windows Media solution on the Mac has been from Flip4Mac (and indeed Microsoft is itself distributing the Flip4Mac plugin). Nonetheless, I still regularly run into problems trying to stream Windows Media videos, so this has to be taken as good news. Unfortunately, however, Microsoft is apparently not going to support PPC Macs in future releases of Silverlight (via Gruber).
Silverlight is a free download from Microsoft.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Attention, residents of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. It looks like there's an Apple Store in your future.
According to Mcall.com, Apple is scheduled to install a store in the soon-to-be-built addition to the Whitehall Township Mall. Sure enough, a quick look at Apple's jobs page revealed several retail positions are available for that location.
Since the mall's addition hasn't been built yet, we won't ask our operatives in Pennsylvania to start scouring the area for spyshots just yet. But still...be ready.

RubyCocoa is a nifty "bridge" between Ruby and Objective-C (the language of Cocoa), that allows developers to "write full-stack Cocoa applications in Ruby" or a "Cocoa application that mixes Ruby and Objective-C code." It has just received a major update to version 0.11.0. The release notes list the considerable changes; these include compatibility with Ruby 1.9, support for Quartz Composer, support for 64-bit applications and much more. As it happens, I've been slowly learning Ruby, so I'm looking forward to learning how to use RubyCocoa to build Mac applications with Ruby on the back-end.
RubyCocoa is free and open source; it's a free download from SourceForge.

Got a place you need to be at 3:00? Want to send yourself a message to get out the door at 2:40? Terminal's "leave" command offers a simple way to remind yourself about your upcoming schedule. leave 0240 waits until 2:35 and then alerts you to get ready to leave with both text and a beep. Reminders occur at 5 minutes and 1 minutes before the time you enter, and then every minute after until you close the terminal window. (You can also kill the process whose id is listed for you when you issue the leave command.)
Leave uses a 12-hour clock so you don't have to worry about whether to use 0240 or 1440. Both produce the same result. All times are assumed to be within the next 12 hours.
You can also use the "+" flag to set a relative time. Say you want to work on a project for just the next hour. Use leave +0100. This sets an alarm for one hour from the current time.

We recently mentioned a concept from Arriva for iPod Shuffle headphones that integrate the Shuffle into the 'phones themselves. Well Monster Cable (of way-too-expensive-cables fame) has apparently beaten them to the punch with these foldable iFreePlay headphones. As you can see the Shuffle fits into the top of the left can for a "cordless" experience, while still giving access to the controls, etc. While you're certainly not going to be a paragon of fashion walking down the street with these, I could imagine that they might be useful for the gym or a run.
The iFreePlay headphones are available now for $49.95.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, iPhone
Gene Munster, a PiperJaffray analyst, is predicting the debut of a widescreen 6G iPod early this autumn, possibly at a $399 price point according to this article at the UK's PC Advisor. While many of us would love a 6G widescreen iPod, would it make sense for the iPod to appear so soon after the introduction of the iPhone? Munster thinks the iPhone will sell a million units in just the first three months after launch. That's a lot of iPhones to move in such a short time. I think a 6G iPod would cut into iPhone sales. If you had the choice between a 6G iPod and an iPhone, would you still get the iPhone?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
