- Information Week's iPhone Questions
Alexander Wolfe of Information Week has posted his list of the top 7 questions Steve Jobs doesn't want you to ask about the iPhone . For example, Wolfe wants to know "Will the battery crap out after 18 months?" The iPod isn't known for either its long-lived batteries or it's user-empowering battery replacement features. My Kyocera's battery regularly conks out after about 18 months, but it's a simple nothing for me to pop onto the 'net, order a replacement and install it myself. Does the iPhone's lack of simple battery care mean users will have to buy extended iPhone warranties on top of the expensive handset and data plans?Pop over to Information Week to read the entire list of questions. I bet #2 will make you laugh out loud.

Filed under: Bad Apple, Macbook Pro, MacBook
One could allow Fred Greaves and Dave Gatley some latitude for extreme frustration. Both Mac-toting photographers found themselves, along with other MacBook and MacBook Pro owners, dealing with 'sparkly' and 'grainy' color on their laptop screens; as color-sensitive professionals, this rankled. Being told by Apple support that they were hypersensitive and they should get over themselves? Not good. Seeing discussion threads on the issue squelched on Apple's support boards? Infuriating. So, the two men decided to avail themselves of the last tech support refuge of the American consumer: the class-action lawsuit.
At the heart of Greaves and Gatley's action is the belief that Apple deceptively promoted its laptop screens as having superior color performance, when in fact the displays are only capable of displaying 18-bit color (6 bit * 3 channels, about 262,000 colors; contrast with 24-bit color, 8 bits per channel for 16.7 million colors). While almost all laptop panels are 6-bit models, and other laptop manufacturers use similar dithering methods (Frame Rate Control) to achieve the perceived wider gamut of millions of colors, this seems fishy to G&G. Additionally, the subjective experience of some MBP owners indicates that the banding/sparkling issues are nonexistent when the machines are booted into Windows; hence, a software or firmware issue on the Mac side would seem to be degrading the display/adapter performance.
I'm no stranger to the hardware problem that's oddly OS-specific, and I sympathize with those who expected Pro color on Pro laptops. The 6-bit vs. 8-bit issue aside -- it's industry-standard, and some Apple tech notes even acknowledge the distinction -- and as frustrating as the color conundrum must be for those affected, I can't imagine that this lawsuit is going to allow anyone to see green (aside from plaintiff's attorneys, that is).

I'm a huge fan of the Apple Newton, and I've written about it several times here at TUAW. I've also spent time playing with a hipster PDA and the D*I*Y templates.
Today I noticed a bit of convergence as dougj at D*I*Y Planner has picked up a Newton 2100 of his own, and is loving it.
I won't go into all of the great Newt functionality that I enjoy in this post (look here for some of that), but I do agree with dougj when he says, "The address book and calendar/to-do lists are more than adequate...and the Assistant that correctly interprets 'Remind me to take out the garbage' or 'Lunch with Mary at the club' allows me to manage my time and tasks no matter where I am in any program."
Welcome to the club, dougj! I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

A few weeks ago, Apple released iQuiz for the 5th generation iPod. As it stands from the iTunes Store, it creates a quiz game based on your iTunes library's meta data.
However, the real fun is making your own quizzes for iQuiz, and sharing them with our buds. There are a number of sites that will show you just how to do it, as well as provide the means for sharing your custom-built quizzes. iQuizr uses a web interface for the construction of games, and categorizes available games for quick download.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone, Apple History
Michael Simon at Mac | Life takes a cautionary look at the iPhone from the perspective of the failed Newton. In the months before its launch, the Newton generated a lot of buzz and excitement, and boasted similar functionality. As Mr. Simon notes, the original Newton introductory video states, "The Newton MessagePad can find a phone number and dial the phone for you, fax a note, format a letter, and even set up a lunch appointment."
It's an interesting comparison, but I don't think it's entirely fair. When the Newton was introduced, not may people - if any - knew what a "PDA" was. The concept was even new for Apple.
Conversely, everyone knows what a cell phone is, and nearly everyone has used one. While it's true that Apple has a lot riding on the iPhone - you could argue even more so than the Newton - its path will be very different.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Late last week, Griffin announced the availability of the iTrip Pocket, their smallest FM transmitter yet. Designed to match the overall look of the iPod nano, it's about the size of a matchbook and will work with the 1st and 2nd generation iPod nano, as well as the 4th and 5th generation iPod. Plus, their "Smart Display" feature lets you adjust settings on the iPod's screen.
The tiny little transmitter fits right on your keychain and costs $49.99US.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Here's a very useful utility. FileUtilsCM beefs up your Mac's contextual menus with a number of useful features. Our favorite, by far, is the ability to copy a file's path to the clipboard with click.
Other functions include touch modification date, lock, make read only and refresh view in the Finder. You can even toggle extension visibility and make use of a full "File Info" submenu.
FileUtilsCM is free and requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or higher.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
