- MacFusion: a GUI for MacFUSE

We mentioned MacFUSE many times here on TUAW. It's a very cool utility (from Amit Singh at Google) which brings the Linux FUSE project to the Mac for easily expanding file system support (for more background on Singh and MacFUSE check out this interview at IT Conversation). Unfortunately, however, MacFUSE is a rather geeky project that requires some command line chops to get things going. That's where MacFusion comes in, as a GUI front-end for MacFUSE that puts easy access to MacFUSE network mounts in your menubar. It's still early in development but it will already "show a Secure Shell or Secure FTP share from another computer on your macs desktop, letting you manipulate the files on it as if they were on your own computer. MacFusion can also do the same for any File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server, giving read/write FTP in the finder for the first time!"
Of course you'll need to install MacFUSE first, then download MacFusion and install it as a normal application. MacFusion is free and open source.

Have you heard of Macitt? It is a Digg-like site that concentrates on Apple news only, none of that wacky Linux stuff or distasteful Windows tips to clutter up the site. Our friends at Macitt let us know that they are giving away a MacBook this month, and all you have to do is participate on the site. 3 stories, 3 comments, and 3 Macitts is your formula for getting a new MacBook (or at least being entered into the contest). The contest ends June 30th, so get Macitting while the getting is good.

As an Apple blogger I have seen my fair share of rumors, it is my job to read and report about them after all, though I must admit that I am tired of them. I am not TUAW's resident baseball fan, but since it is peanuts and crackerjack season I thought it only appropriate to feature the MLB Schedule widget. This widget gives you an at a glance look at your favorite team's schedule with a 5 day period. If the game has already played it shows you the score, otherwise you get the start time, the opponent, the location, and who is pitching.

It is an interesting time to be a Mac user. More and more folks are seeing the light and picking up a Mac, perhaps to go with their iPods, and now you can even run Windows on a Mac. Boot Camp is great, but Boot Camp plus AppleScript plus Quicksilver is even better! This tutorial over at MacInstruct (love the logo by the way) shows you how to reboot your Mac into Windows using the awesomeness that is Quicksilver.

This news may not excite too many folks out there, but I imagine one or two of you are interested in using a PowerMac or Mac Pro as a server. Doing that correctly means you need at least 2 ethernet ports but sometimes even that isn't enough. Luckily for our server wanting friends Small Tree Communications has just released their Single Port Copper Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Card for PCI Express Power Macs and the Mac Pro. This $99 PCI express card adds a single 10/100/1000 baseT ethernet port to your Power Mac or Mac Pro. Not too shabby.

Not long ago Fortune let us know that Apple was the 6th most desirable place for MBAs to work. It would seem that undergrads have the same good taste that their graduate level brethren have. Universum conducted a poll asking undergraduates where they wanted to work after graduation and our favorite computer/electronics company came in at number 3.
Other companies on the top 25 include Google, Disney, and the Peace Corps.

A while back in our TUAW Guide to Xbox 360 and Mac we mentioned the forthcoming Spring Dashboard update on the 360 was to bring updated video codec support. Well that update dropped last week and Nullriver has correspondingly updated their Connect360 software (which we've mentioned before) that allows streaming video (and audio) files from a Mac straight to a Xbox 360. The newly supported codecs include full HD (1920x1080) H.264 in both the MPEG-4 and QuickTime containers (in addition to the previous WMV). This, of course, is substantially higher than Apple TV's support for 720p video, making the Xbox 360 likely the best full HD video extender available (though the Xbox is disappointingly loud compared to the Apple TV).
Connect360 remains $20 and a demo is available.

It's the time of year when blooming flowers have already frozen off their branches and turned to mud-- Spring! OK, it's almost summer, but we're going with a flowery outlook on life anyway. Point is, TUAW is giving away 5 iPod shuffles, one of each color, all this week.
Today's color? The vibrant color gray. The color of dust, neutrality, and Borg skin. Hard to imagine a color that better sums up the rebirth of nature, isn't it? Yeah, there are plenty of better colors. Stay tuned tomorrow as we open up the contest to our next (mystery) color...
