- MacTech VBA to AppleScript Guide free online
Filed under: How-tos, Productivity, Developer
We've mentioned before Microsoft's controversial decision to end support for Visual Basic (VBA) scripting in the forthcoming Office 2008 and replace it with AppleScript. While normally moving to an Apple standard technology over a closed Microsoft solution is a good thing, this move will have major repercussions with respect to cross-platform compatibility. Once this is done many scripts and macros written for the Windows versions of MS Office will no longer work on the Mac version. There is a work-around, rewriting the macros and scripts in AppleScript, though that will take some doing. Fortunately, MacTech magazine has produced a VBA to Applescript Transition Guide to help with the process. Originally the Guide was only included with the April issue of MacTech Magazine, but they have now seen the light and are offering it free on their website. You can still purchase a PDF or paper copy as well. Check it out over at MacTech.

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Apple
This story on Wired blog is interesting. About a month ago the former CEO of Macworld Magazine, Colin Crawford, took over sister magazine PC World and just recently put the kibosh on a story idea for the latter: "Ten Things We Hate about Apple." According to Wired's anonymous source: "It was supposed to be light fare, just really innocuous stuff. The same kinds of things people have said about Apple before -- things that teased Steve Jobs." This prompted the editor-in-chief of PC World, Harry McCracken, to resign in protest. The Wired story continues: "Crawford also told editors that product reviews in the magazine were too critical of vendors, especially ones who advertise in the magazine, and that they had to start being nicer to advertisers." Supposedly when Crawford was still at Macworld, "Steve Jobs would call him up any time he had a problem with a story the magazine was running about Apple."
So clearly the implication is that Macworld is a sort of Pravda of Apple, Inc., and kept in line by upper management who kowtow to Cupertino. So what do you think? Does this make you suspect the objectivity of Macworld Magazine?

The iWay is one of those products that generates more questions than it answers. It is advertised as a way to get photos onto your iPod (iPod photos, oddly, aren't supported) so you can showcase your pics on your iPod's screen. Their is no mention of how one gets the photos off of the iPod, but you can move pictures from an SD card onto the iPod and then delete the contents of the SD card.
The iWay costs $69.95.

Fans of OpenOffice, the open source alternative to MS Office, rejoice! Sun, the company that puts the dot in .com, has just announced that they are joining the OpenOffice Mac porting project. What does this mean? It means that the chances of a Aqua version of OpenOffice materializing has just gone way up. Jim Parkinson even suggests that Sun might port StarOffice (which is the version of OpenOffice that Sun distributes itself) to OS X.
Thanks, Mark.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Audio, Hardware, iPod Family
CNET's Crave has the scoop on these "wireless" headphones forthcoming from Arriva. As you can see from the Photoshop mockup, the headphones integrate a 2nd generation iPod Shuffle dock in the middle to achieve the "wireless" effect. I'm guessing you'd be the subject of a few double-takes walking down the street with a Shuffle apparently embedded in the back of your skull, but this looks like it might be useful for exercise, etc. CNET quotes Arriva's founder as saying "Apple knows what we are up to and have not said anything except we can make our headphones in all the Shuffle colors, which we are."
Arriva has not yet announced a price or shipping date (though "hopefully by this summer").

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends
Shortly after the iMac was introduced colorful translucent plastics became the hot new thing in industrial design. Everything was sporting translucent plastic in a variety of lickable colors, including the George Foreman Grill (who doesn't like to knock out the fat?). Therefore, as the iMac was to 1998 so the iPod is to 2007. You know where this is going, don't you?
The iGrill is a George Foreman grill with an integrated iPod speaker system (you can plug another DAP into it, if you like, but really why would you?). At $149 this thing is a little pricey, but if you like to grill and jam at the same time, this might be the ticket.

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Universal Binary
You are all familiar with Flickr, Yahoo!'s photo sharing site, I assume. Flickr provides Mac users with a free utility to upload, tag, and group photos called Flickr Uploadr. Sadly for Intel Mac users it wasn't a Universal Binary, but the wait is over. Flickr Uploadr 2.3 is a Universal Binary, starts up faster, and has a few new bells and whistles.
Flickr Uploadr 2.3 is free.
A few pics of the interface are waiting for you, after the jump.Continue reading Flickr Uploadr 2.3

Safari's built-in Google search box offers a great way to access that powerful search engine. If you're a keyboard sort of person who prefers not to keep reaching for the mouse, here's a simple way to access that text field without having to move your hands away from the keyboard. Press Command-Option-F and Safari instantly switches focus to the Google search box.
To search, enter some text and press return. Want to return to the page you were previously looking at? Press Command-Left arrow. The left and right arrow keys when combined with the Command key move you through your Safari page history path for the currently displayed window.
One more thing: Notice that dot to the left of the Google search field? Drag it left or right to adjust the size of your address field and the Google field.
