  • TUAW Tip: Don't Torrent That Song...

Sure, you can now download music from the iTunes store without DRM but that doesn't mean you should just willy nilly start sharing that music with your friends. For one thing, it's illegal. For another, your account information is embedded into that m4a music file. Don't believe me? Try this yourself.

    1. Launch Terminal. You'll need to be comfortable at the command line to perform this check.

    2. Navigate to one of your iTunes plus downloads. If you have a US iTunes account, you can download the iTunes plus "Ooh La" single of the week.

    3. Use the UNIX "strings" command to look at the text in your data and grep to search for your name. e.g. strings 01\ Ooh\ La.m4a | grep name. Alternatively, open all the strings in TextEdit strings 01\ Ooh\ La.m4a | open -f.

Bottom line: DRM-free doesn't mean that Apple suddenly supports piracy.

  • Microsoft Surface: it is like an iPhone, in table form

It looks like interactive surfaces are all the rage nowadays. First we had the iPhone from Apple with its multi-touch technology and now we have Microsoft's Surface (of course neither of these devices is actually shipping yet, but when does that stop us from talking about them?). Surface is a 30 inch screen that is mounted in a table. It uses a similiar touch interface as the iPhone does, but on a much larger scale. It can also interact with objects that are tagged using RFID tags, displaying information about the object. Microsoft eventually sees a point in the future when you would be able to rest your Zune (ha!) on the Surface and transfer songs from your library using only your fingertips as well as interact with other devices in the same fashion.

Check out the Surface website for some very cool demos. Sadly, you won't be able to buy this for your home anytime soon. The unit is rumored to cost $10,000 and at the moment is aimed at commercial uses. Microsoft is scheduling a road show of sorts so you can get your hands on one and give it a whirl.

Sometimes I feel like we're living in the future, people!

  • "One Thumb to Rule them All"

This video is just flat out amazing. Mike Phillips is a Mac gamer and writer, who just happens to have been born with spinal muscular atrophy. He's apparently only able to move his thumb, and yet that doesn't stop him from playing Unreal Tournament and World of Warcraft. This is possible thanks to a proximity switch connected the Swifty USB switch interface from Origin Instrument and the SwitchXS software from AssistiveWare. The latter looks basically like a kind of on-screen keyboard, that Mike scrolls through to select arrows or letters, etc. Seeing Mike frag people left and right is enough to make me keep away from him online.

AssistiveWare has a variety of products to help disabled Mac users, as well as other videos demonstrating some of them.

  • iTunes 7.2 Gallery

    Filed under:

    Gallery: iTunes 7.2

iTunes 7.2Terms and ConditionsSetting PreferencesiTunes PlusiTunes Plus Tag

If you're stuck at work and can't get away to take a peek at the new iTunes 7.2 update, we've put together this handy gallery of screen shots showing you the new 7.2 features. In iTunes 7.2, you'll find a new link to iTunes Plus in the iTunes Quick Links. Select it and iTunes will prompt you to update preferences (whether to use iTunes plus for your albums whenever possible) and your licensing agreement--that's another agreement on top of the one you had to agree to just to install the program.

TUAW's 7.2 gallery is a work in progress. Expect updates throughout the day as the new features come on line.

  • ChangeShortName updated to 1.3

A few weeks ago, in discussing some things not to do with your Mac, one of our commenters asked why changing the shortname (the abbreviated version of your username you see in Terminal, as the name of your 'home folder' or in Get Info windows) is such a nasty bit of business on Mac OS X. Shouldn't it be easy as pie, on the 'computer for the rest of us,' to make this quick and trivial modification? Well... it isn't. In part due to Mac OS X's UNIX heritage and in part due to NetInfo (a chunk of the NeXT operating system that hopefully won't be around forever), the shortname gets tucked away in a lot of tricky wee places, and getting them all updated manually is a path to disaster.

Fortunately, as Scott mentioned way back in ought-five, there's a somewhat easier way: James Bucanek & Dan Frakes' handy-dandy and free ChangeShortName utility. This tool, now updated to version 1.3 and featuring an all-new Cocoa interface, will give timid people the strength to do what must be done and change your shortname for you, as an absolute last resort. Seriously, you are not allowed to use this program without reading the included (and well-written) manual, and you should heed the FAQ that asks "Q: Should I be scared of ChangeShortName? A: YES."

The authors suggest learning to live with your hella lame shortname, or creating a new account and migrating your data instead of changing the name; if something goes wrong in the process, your efforts at account aesthetics might render your machine unusable. You've been warned!

    Thanks Dan & James

  • iTunes U comes to the iTunes Store

    Filed under:

Along with iTunes Plus and DRMless tracks Apple also announced that iTunes U will now be available via the iTunes Store for everyone. iTunes U started a year and a half ago as a pilot program at Stanford which put some lectures online with iTunes. Apple and Stanford then created a custom iTunes interface for use at Stanford and the rest is history.

Now the general public will have access to materials from top rated universities, and best of all it is free. As with the other iTunes announcements today, this isn't available in the iTunes Store just yet, but I have a feeling we'll see it soon.

Update: iTunes U lives [iTunes link].

  • iTunes Plus debuts DRM-free music

    Filed under:

At TUAW we've been following the DRM-free EMI track deal for some time. We're delighted to announce that these tracks will finally available for sale over at the iTunes Store later today (Apple announced they are available, but not in my copy of iTunes at the moment).

DRM-free tracks will cost you $1.29 each rather than the normal $0.99 per track you normally pay. The extra money buys you more audio quality than the standard DRM'ed tracks (256 kbps AAC versus 128 kbs AAC). Expect larger data downloads as your audio files expand to accommodate those extra bits.

    iTunes Plus requires iTunes 7.2.

  • Apple blocking MySpace from store machines

    Filed under:

Late last week it was reported that Apple is now blocking access to MySpace pages from computers in the Apple Store as a means of preventing cyber-loitering. Apparently some 'customers' have been hogging both the iSights and the bandwidth the stores provide and impeding the free flow of shiny, glossy, well-designed commerce.

As I am neither a teenager, the parent of a teenager (thank mighty Isis!) nor an indie-geek-folkie musical sensation, the MySpace phenomenon has largely passed me by. I did attend a meeting once where MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe was presenting, and I recall thinking that the News Corp buyout had enabled him to get himself some REALLY nice shoes. I imagine the collective 'talk to the hand' from Apple retail will bother the MySpacies a little bit, but I doubt it will reduce either company's cool factor dramatically.
