- Macs join the fight in '300'
With a shocking and awesome $70+ million in weekend box office, the film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 has shot (and hacked, and stabbed) its way to the 3rd best R-rated opening and the all-time best March opening in US film history. Way to go, Spartans.
As noted on ballergoods.com and also at IMDB, the Mac played a big role in bringing 300 to the screen, with chunks of editing done in Final Cut and 2D graphics created in Shake. In fact, the IMDB article notes that while much of the production was on Avid systems (platform unspecified) and Linux workstations (presumably for Maya and Combustion), "the filmmakers prefer Macintosh." Like we always say, there is no substitute.Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Like They Might Be Giants, the Mac blogosphere has two big Johns: Gruber and Welch. While both are highly informative/informed and entertaining writers, there are some key differences. Welch's blog has to be described as Not Safe For Work. Still, he cleans up right nice. His recent Top 22 Mac Products article for InformationWeek was a considered, cogent and eye-opening take on the "software you can't live without" story.
As we've noted for the past couple of weeks, thanks to writers like Welch, Tom Yager, Seth Weintraub and Ryan Fass, there's more and more rosy Mac coverage in the IT industry trade publications. From the perspective of Mac-centric IT folk like yours truly, this is definitely a Good Thing.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iTS, Features, iTunes, Deals
Welcome to this week's edition of Free Tuesday. Today, we're happy to bring you a lot of new fresh music freebies and for US readers, a number of new videos as well. US readers please be aware that the Single of the Week "The Story" hasn't been downloading consistently today. You may want to try again tomorrow to give Apple time to resolve the problem.US Music
US: The Story by Brandi Carlile
A cursory listen to the music of Brandi Carlile might lead you to mistake the inflections of her voice, her influences, and the lyrical themes of her music as geared toward a career in country music. The truth is that country music was just the starting point for Carlile. She grew up around those rural sounds, but has fashioned a career for herself as a soulful singer who can belt out a tune with more than just twangy gusto. "The Story" is a full-steam-ahead rock ballad that showcases a voice built for filling up stadiums.US: Synchronize by Tomboy
Our Discovery Download comes off the new full-length, Seriøs, from Danish producer Tomboy. Tomas Barfod, the man behind the music, shows us a range never revealed in his dance releases as Tomboy or under his birth name on Get Physical. If you are familiar with his work in the groups Filur or WhoMadeWho, wherein he explores his ethereal, funky, cheeky side, you may have known he had it in him. The album stands tall as a whole, wearing Barfod's strengths in arrangements and perfect percussion on tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor (see "I K. Guitar") and the songs like the one we've chosen to expose you to, the Tom-Tom-Club-esque "Synchronize." Only on iTunes, the album comes with two bonus tracks, so get in for free and join the party!US: José el Azteca by Kinto Sol
When most hip-hop groups talk about being old-school, they're talking about bringing it back to the Bronx circa 1979. Kinto Sol take it back further, putting the traditional sounds of Mexico and Aztec references into its bustling, head-bobbing cuts. This track "Jose El Azteca" is taken from the group's fourth album and is our free Single of the Week.Lots more great freebies after the jump.

You'd think, judging on the name alone, that iSCSI was an Apple product -- perhaps an easier-to-use, shiny, beveled version of the original SCSI? If wishing made it so: sadly, it's only an implementation of SCSI over IP, allowing hosts to connect to remote drives, RAIDs, SANs or tape libraries over standard Ethernet connections. While early iSCSI gear was noticeably slow compared to Fibre Channel and other storage fabric connections, the latest stuff is quite snappy, especially when combined with 10G Ethernet connectivity.
Up until now, the only iSCSI initiators (drivers) available for Mac OS X were paid affairs, usually bundled with hardware or management tools. Now, in advance of the anticipated inclusion of iSCSI with Leopard, the good people at Studio Network Solutions have proffered up a free-as-in-beer version of the globalSAN iSCSI initiator for OS X. No support offered, so download and deploy with caution.

InformationWeek reports that the US National Institute of Standards and Technology has banned Vista from internal computing networks. NIST tech workers will meet on the 10th of April in a session called "Windows Vista Security" to discuss their concerns about the new OS. The NIST ban follows on the heels of similar moves by the US Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.
You've got to love the way that InformationWeek enjoys delivering the news, stating that Microsoft suffers its "latest blow". As former First Lady Nancy Reagan would say: "Just say no to Vista."Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Well, pilgrim, surf your way over to Command-Tab for a detailed, delightful rundown on iPod hard drive replacement. They've got the scoop on every drive that will fit in full-size current and past model players, plus detailed replacement instructions and tool info (careful with that razor blade, Sparky!) for the do-it-yourselfer behind those white earbuds. Now, my inventory of dead iPods includes one Mini that could use new storage; for that I might have to go with this series of tips on upgrading to 4, 8 or 16 GB of Flash RAM.

When Nine Inch Nails released With Teeth a couple of years ago, Trent put out Garageband versions of some of the album's songs, encouraging fans to remix the music and post the results online. Well, he's done it again with "Survivalism," the first single off of Year Zero [iTunes link].
This is the full album version of the song, with all parts ready for your manipulation. Have fun, TUAWers, and let us know what you come up with!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Now we know why Steve loves his cube so much: It's free advertising space! Earlier yesterday morning (Monday, March 12th), workers placed a huge iPhone ad over one side of the cube. It features the now familiar image of a hand holding an iPhone and the line, "Introducing iPhone. Apple reinvents the phone."
So, what's going to be the next ad on the cube?
Thanks, Arnold!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
