- iPhoto Keyword Assistant and Manager plugins updated
Filed under: iLife, Software, Productivity
The two major keyword plugins for iPhoto have both been updated recently. First up is everyone's favorite free alternative, Ken Ferry's Keyword Assistant which we've covered in the past. This new 1.9.4 version adds a panel withtagkeyword auto-completion, and it can also alphabetize the keyword list.
Next is Keyword Manager, a shareware plugin for iPhoto that brings some more robust features to the table for seriously serious iPhoto keyword junkies. New in version 1.2 is:
- Copy and paste keywords between photos
- Jump directly to next untagged photo
- Fixed crash bug in Dutch version
- Minor stability bugs fixed
- Japanse localization
- German localization
- Chinese localization

Filed under: Education, Odds and ends, Apple
In February, we posted about Steve Jobs's anti-teacher's-union speech at a K-12 education reform conference. "I believe that what is wrong with our schools in this nation is that they have become unionized in the worst possible way," he said a few weeks ago. The education community continues to respond to that speech. Yesterday, in an OpEd News article called "Jobs against Jobs", Dale Hill a 34-year retired education veteran, took issue with Jobs and defended the NEA. He suggests that Jobs stick to making computers and gadgets and leave education to professional educators. Kind of harsh, no? Well, Hill is certainly not alone in his opinion and there are many supporters on the opposite side of the debate as well. A quick google for "Steve Jobs"+NEA reveals the very polarized response Jobs' speech has received from the Webosphere.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We talked with Freeverse at Macworld about a variety of products including their audio recording and editing program Sound Studio; now version 3.5 has dropped. Highlights of the new version include Apple Lossless and Ogg support, ID3 metadata editing and various other improvements. I hadn't noticed before, but Freeverse eats its own dog food, and has used Sound Studio "for years to create all the dialog and sound effects in our games."
Sound Studio is $79.95 and a demo is available for download.

Filed under: iPod Family, How-tos, iTunes
Did you know you could view lyrics on your iPod? You can turn your iPod into a crude kind of sort-of-but-not-quite karaoke system by adding lyrics to your music and syncing those lyrics to your iPod. Both 5G and nano iPods allow you to view song lyrics as your music plays. Here are the steps to take to make this happen.Continue reading HOWTO: Add lyrics to your iPod

Has your magsafe adapter stopped working properly? One of the connector pins might be stuck. Apple has published[1] a support article on troubleshooting stuck pins. If you remove your adapter and see one or more of the pins stuck down (the two outer pins in this picture are affected), Apple suggests you try unplugging and replugging the adapter to allow the pins to reset themselves. If that doesn't work, you can use your finger or a pencil eraser to nudge the pin back into position. If all else fails? Visit your local Apple service provider.
[1] It's at the top of their current support RSS feed. Readers point out that it's been published before.

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Podcasts
This week's podcast covers 1Passwd, the password manager and autofill tool that brings some really unique features and multi-browser support for the Keychain to the table. For just under 8 minutes I demonstrate some of the killer features of this app that go above and beyond the norm, and the whole thing weighs in at a mere 28MB. Snag it from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. Enjoy!Permalink | Email this | Comments

Have you ever held an iPod, looked at it, and thought to yourself, "Dang. It's just not Zune enough"? Are you looking for ways to Zune up your iPod? If the lack of wireless music transfer has held you back from truly enjoying your iPod to its fullest, is it possible that you can now rejoice?
Our sister blog Engadget writes about a new iPod attachment that supposedly gives iPods Zune-like music-transfer abilities. Although the NBC News report shown here suggests the device will be available by Christmas in major retailers like Best Buy, Engadget recommends you don't hold your breath. They remain skeptical as to whether the device will function as advertised--even within the promised 15-foot radius.

Filed under: Internet Tools, TUAW Tip
Do you find yourself being pestered by Skype callers the minute you wake up your Mac? Yes, I know, we all should be so popular; that doesn't make it any less annoying for those who are on the world's e-speed-dial. This tip from murphymac.com allows you to automatically set your status to "Not Available" before your machine sleeps (via the SleepWatcher tool), thereby dodging the deluge of attention from your adoring public. Murphy has also provided a handy screencast showing the steps to perform.

Apple's Pro ezine has posted a nice piece by Joe Cellini on the production of Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season (available on DVD and in iTS) by Broadway Video. The definitive DVD set includes the original 24 "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" episodes from way back in 1975. Why the long delay? Music clearances, which took a full 32 years to finish, leaving BV only six weeks to complete the DVD set in time for the holiday buying season.
Enter XSan. In the process of converting to high-def production, the SNL team built out a ginormous XServe RAID storage network, including a complete 30-year archive of all the standard-def shows stored in 10-bit uncompressed format. Gosh, that's... (quick calculation in AJA Data Rate) about 150 GB per 90-minute show, 30 seasons of 24 shows each: over 100 terabytes of funny, not even counting the HD shows from the past two seasons. With the first season already digitized, the DVD production was dramatically faster than it would have been otherwise, and according to BV, they "did the entire process using Macs running Final Cut Pro, Shake, Final Touch, and DVD Studio Pro, all SAN-based." Filed under: Software, Freeware, Internet, Open Source, Developer
With his post nominating apps for the upcoming Apple Design Awards (which we mentioned here), Scott Stevenson brought my attention to Locomotive from Ryan Rauum. Locomotive is an environment for developing Ruby on Rails applications on your Mac. It allows you to "try Ruby on Rails without worrying about breaking your current system - it's entirely self-contained." You just download it and "jump right into Rails development the minute you finish downloading." This seems a lot like MAMP, but for Ruby on Rails. So if you've ever wanted to try out Ruby on Rails (which is apparently how all the cool people are developing for Web 2.0) without the annoyances of getting Ruby and Rails properly set up, this is a perfect opportunity.
Locomotive is a free download from SourceForge, but donations are requested.
