%Gallery-2367%So this morning I downloaded a copy of the new Apple TV custom plug-in called ATVFiles. It's an Apple TV "appliance", which means that it runs directly in your Apple TV Finder rather than as a separate an OS X application. I copied it over to my Apple TV, installed it in Finder (in /System/Library/CoreServices) and relaunched my system. I was delighted to find it show up listed in the main menu, and when selected it correctly listed the contents of my /Users/frontrow/Movies folder. Unfortunately, I could not actually get the movie to play (early days yet!) but this looks like a huge step forward for Apple TV users. For what it's worth, I do have Perian installed and I can play the movie back in VLC.

Can you think of a better way to start the weekend than with a nice set of photos of a burnt and melted iPod? Nope, we couldn't either. This set of destroyed iPod images is brought to you courtesy of Digg, where the submitter writes that the iPod exploded while charging "in a shower of sparks and smoke". Journalists say "if it bleeds, it leads". TUAW says if it goes boom, there's room. Or something like that. Enjoy the photos.

Jason O'Grady of ZDNet posts that thousands of Windows users are having problems with iTunes 7.1.1, which they believe will not allow them to properly search the iTunes store. Their search goes into an endless wait, and then they get a message that their iTunes request could not be completed.
It seems to me that Apple's response, namely that the "network connection timed-out" error is an Internet problem not a software problem, sounds reasonable. When iTunes connects to the store, it's sending out a request for what is essentially a webpage and this request can hang for any number of network reasons--including those on the Apple end.

We posted a while back about the introduction of tabs into SubEthaEdit. I recently ran across another text editor that offers tabs called ForgEdit, which bills itself as the "programmers text editor for OS X." It seems to be a rather straightforward app with some decent, if not terribly innovative, features, such as customizable key bindings and a file drawer. I don't think it's going to make me give up TextMate, but if you're looking for an editor with tabs it's probably worth a look.

Rejoice, o ye owners of Pearls and such: Mark/Space's Missing Sync for Blackberry is out of beta and on sale today. $40 for new licenses, $20 for cross-grades from other Missing Sync editions... but wait, you say, isn't PocketMac for Blackberry free of charge now? Yes it is, and you get what you pay for. (Kidding. Much love, PocketMac.)
A couple of key features in MSfB for the road warriors among us: iTunes and iPhoto syncing for capable devices (eh), you can charge your Blackberry via your laptop's USB ports (yay!), and Notes sync now includes Yojimbo as a data source (YAY!). Have you been looking to stream radio to your Apple TV? Or to download some podcasts directly to it, bypassing your main system? Here's a collection of photos showing what things look like when you disable the normal Apple TV software and run iTunes directly on the Apple TV hardware. There's a lot missing--namely the ability to type text for some reason, and all the iTunes labels--but you can still manage to eek out some features that are otherwise missing in the current Apple TV software.
For the most part, you need to run iTunes over a VNC connection from a normal Macintosh, but once you get going you can stream the audio live from any radio station for an indefinite period of time. Make sure to use the Apple Remote about once every twenty-to-thirty minutes to keep Apple TV from automatically going to sleep.
