- Elton John signs an exclusive iTunes deal
Well, for a while, at least. Sir Elton John will release his entire back catalog of music - that's 30 + albums and over 400 songs - exclusively to the iTunes Store (ITS) on March 26. The ITS will remain the exclusive online distributor of this collection of music until April 30th, at which time Elton will (presumably) make the offer to other distributors.
It's a coup for Apple, as Elton is a legendary musician, and a display of faith in iTunes by Elton himself. Now, as Infinite Loop points out, this is what many of us were hoping would happen with the Beatles' music now that their legal case with Apple had been settled, but it won't be the case.
Anyway, if you're a fan of Sir Elton and you're looking to complete your collection, fire up iTunes on March 26th.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iTS
There's a new trend over at the iTunes store: shows that you can buy and watch well in advance of the network premiere. Take "The Winner", for example, or "Andy Barker, PI". Both these shows debuted on iTunes, with all their episodes, before they started airing on TV. This move should create advance buzz for shows that might otherwise have trouble finding an audience. And while I don't think we'll ever see this kind of advance access for high concept serialized shows like Battlestar Galactica or Heroes, I could easily see a move like this for quirky cable shows like Monk or Psych looking to expand their audience through presales.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It may be hard to believe but not everyone who reads TUAW owns a Mac (shocking, I know). Lots of our readers are Windows users making their first tentative steps towards computing nirvana and we here at TUAW want to help. Today's ten reasons to get a Mac come from that bastion of tech journalism, the Register. Some of the points made are very good (fast wake up from sleep, target disk mode) and others are just silly, however, it is both entertaining and informative for someone on the fence.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Since switching to an Intel Mac right after Macworld 2006 I've been trying to move away from Microsoft Word on my system, both because I don't like running a PPC app, and because I wanted to escape from Word itself, which I've often found to be ridiculously frustrating (two words: widows and orphans). Given the fact that Word Docs are more or less a de facto standard in academia (in the humanities, at least), it's not possible to get away from it altogether. However, I have started writing my professional papers with Mellel, a powerful, if quirky, word processor from RedleX. Mellel was originally designed to work with Hebrew (and other right to left languages) which have traditionally been under-supported in word processing programs. However, it has grown into a full featured word processor that produces beautiful documents, especially documents that mix different languages with different alphabets. That is, it can produce beautiful documents, if you can bring yourself to understand and effectively use its unique text style and auto-titling systems.
The newest release, version 2.2, adds support for more advanced "bibliography integration" and citation management. Mellel can be a useful tool for producing extremely polished final documents, but I've found that you really do have to spend some time with the software (particularly if you're coming from Word) in order to make the best use of it.
Mellel sells for $49 (though an education license is available for $34.99) and a 30 day demo is available.

We've mentioned Mac Pilot - a powerful Mac OS X tweaking and optimizing utility - before, as it's a great piece of software for bending nearly every aspect of the OS to your bidding. While Koingo Software typically offers a 15 day trial for Mac Pilot with a license going for $19.95, MacZOT has a 50% off deal today that knocks the price down to $9.95. That's a heckuva deal, but in true MacZOT form, it's today only, so get a move on and try Mac Pilot out if you haven't already.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Hardware, Peripherals, Odds and ends
Iyaz Akhtar over at theappleblog points to a nifty little device from Twisted Melon called the Manta TR1, which enabled the Apple IR remote on any older Mac via USB. Just plug in the Manta to a free USB port and your old G4, etc. can rock with an Apple Remote, just like the newest Intel Macs. The Manta is meant to work with Twisted Melon's own Mira Apple Remote software, which we mentioned earlier. In addition, the Manta hardware supports IR blasting (to control other devices) but that functionality is not "used with Mira at this time." Check out Iyaz's original post for more info on RF Remotes.
The Manta TR1 sells for $19.99, and Mira runs $15.95, or you can get them bundled together for $32 from the Twisted Melon store. Of course you'll also need an Apple Remote if you don't have one already; they run $29 from Apple.
Update: chanting over and over again, "Manta"Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Our favorite 'dead tree media' technology columnist, Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, has a review out today (available free at ptech.wsj.com or with subscription at the mothership) of the Apple TV -- the 6-min video above includes most of the high points. Mr. Mossberg praises the unit for its simplicity and ease of setup; he appreciates the fit and finish of the Apple TV and likes the fact that it doesn't try to be everything for everyone. He and co-author Katherine Boehret say the Apple TV is a "pleasure to use," and it "worked great, and we can easily recommend it for people who are yearning for a simple way to show on their big TVs all that stuff trapped on their computers."
Walt thoughtfully points out that you don't need a Mac to use an Apple TV (XP or Vista with iTunes works fine), and that his unit performed perfectly skip- and stutter-free on his 802.11g network, even without the speed boost of 802.11n/Airport Extreme. Interestingly, Walt suggests the main competition for the Apple TV isn't a similar device from Sling, Belkin or other second-tier vendors: it's the big kahuna, the Xbox 360.
Thanks Ben!

Mailboxer is a simple little program (it doesn't even have a proper icon) that automatically generates a Smart Mailbox within Mail.app for each contact in your Address Book (or you can set it only to generate Smart Mailboxes for the contacts which appear in a Group you've named "Mailboxer"). The idea is to give "you convenient access to all conversations you had with each of your contacts." As you can see here it has made a folder "AB" within which is a separate Mailbox for each of the contacts I put in the "Mailboxer" Group in my Address Book. This looks like it could be a very convenient way of keeping on top of email conversations with specific people without always having to go to the search field. And of course this should be combined with our Mail new window tip from yesterday, thus taking you to ever higher flights of email productivity!

People, people, people. The phone's not shipping yet. It's not out yet. It's not even approved by the FCC! So why -- why on earth -- would anyone with the slightest degree of common sense bid almost one thousand dollars on eBay just for the privilege of getting ripped off? Wow.
Thanks to reader David Miller, who took time off from his Mac mini car integration project to give us the heads-up on the sad state of iPhone auctions over eBay way. As the expression goes here in Brooklyn: "Oy."
Update 9am EDT: The original auction has closed, with a winning bid of $1125... *sigh*.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
