- M.C. Hot Software releases Tangle
Developer Matthew Crandall dropped us a note that he had just released a new game called Tangle. Tangle challenges you to untangle balls and lines so that no line crosses another.
It sounded reasonably interesting so I downloaded a copy and gave it a spin. It turned out to be really similar to a game I remember playing (and then recommended to all my family and friends) called Planarity. So I googled up Planarity, a free online flash game, and tried that out as well. It played almost identically. For twenty bucks, I can't really recommend Tangle when there's a free nearly-identical online version available that plays perfectly well in Safari. However, if you want to download the free demo and give it a try, you can get a copy here.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Found Footage
Think you know that famous Ridley Scott 1984 iPod commercial[1]? Think again. Think different. Think politically. A group of anonymous Obama supporters have mashed up footage of Senator (and Prez Candidate) Hillary Rodham Clinton with Apple's iconic iPod ad--even to the point of reshaping the multi-colored Apple logo at the end as an "O". "Why 2008 won't be like '1984'," they pitch. Hillary as Big Brother. Regardless of who you support politically, you've got to admit it's a cleverly done viral ad.
[1] At the 2004 MacWorld Expo, Steve Jobs showed a digitally updated version of the original Mac-only commercial to add the iPod with its signature white earbuds. The Obama commercial uses this updated version. Thanks Jason.

Filed under: Software, Open Source, Developer
Adobe today took the wraps off their cross platform desktop application runtime called Apollo. The alpha is now available for download on Adobe labs.
What the heck does this 'runtime' do? It allows web developers to create desktop applications that run on both the Mac and PC using HTML, AJAX, and Flash. This is all well and good, I imagine you saying, but why the heck is this on TUAW? It would seem that Apollo is using WebKit as its HTML rendering engine. You might recall that WebKit is Apple's variant of the Konqueror HTML engine, which powers Safari and is baked right into OS X.
Adobe is using the open source version of WebKit, which is slightly different than the one found in OS X, but they plan on contributing code back to the project. This can only be good for Mac users. The more people that are using WebKit the more pressure companies will feel to support it (I'm looking at you, banks!).

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple TV
While you're waiting for the Apple TV to ship any day now, MacNN has some interesting snippets of analysis on the device from Piper Jaffray's senior analyst, Gene Munster. Of note, there are a surprising estimate of 118 million 'active' iTunes users compared to Windows Media Center's 12 million users. That's one heck of a lead Apple has, especially for technically being later to the 'media center' game. Still, while some may view the Apple TV as an expensive piece of the Apple entertainment pie, Munster's analysis brings an interesting perspective to the table that's certainly worth a read if you're still on the fence.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
