  • Papers: Scientific Papers PDF Manager

Papers appears to be an interesting application for those in the scientific community who need to read and manage a large number of papers as PDFs. It integrates with the online NIH database PubMed for searching and downloading. It allows you to organize articles not only by title but by author and journal. It even includes a full screen reading mode. There is nice review over at Infinity Loop by Jonathan Gitlin discussing how Papers has improved his own researching workflow.

The idea behind Papers, basically an iTunes or iPhoto for PDF journal articles, is a really good one, but I really wish it could be expanded in several areas. First of all, it clearly needs to support more online bibliographic databases and journal archives. As a humanist, for instance, I'd love a front end for JSTOR and the Philosophers Index (though perhaps I should not hold my breath since the developer calls Papers: "your personal library of science"). Secondly, and more importantly, I'd like to see Papers or a similar application offer a robust system for highlighting, comments, annotations, cross-linking etc. That's what I really need: a good tool to help me read articles (including and especially saving my notes), not just allow me to organize them.

In any case, if you need to manage professional journal articles Papers looks like a good start, though I did run into some bugs. It is presently available as a "Public Preview" and can be downloaded from mekentosj.com. It will eventually sell for €19 (~$25).

    Thanks Tim!

  • Star Trek in iTunes (again)

Back in January, episodes of the original Star Trek TV series were added to the US iTunes store. Then they disappeared, and now they're back again - two times over.

Specifically, the original first season [iTunes link], is listed separately from the digitally enhanced episodes from the same season [iTunes link]. We'd like to say that the former is for purists, and the latter for the more adventurous among us, but iTunes customers have left comments stating that both collections feature enhanced episodes.

It's more confusing than The Menagerie.

Anyway, if you're a fan of TOS (and who isn't, really?), go and pick this up.

  • Apple TV now shipping

As of today, Apple is now shipping AppleTV. Check your email for shipment confirmation. Apple is charging credit cards and providing (in my case FedEx) tracking numbers. In addition, units should be available for sale at local Apple Stores for purchase in short order. If you spent the extra money for priority delivery, you should be seeing your unit very soon.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Trapper Keeper: Menubar Notes

I had previously been looking for a menubar notes program, so I was excited yesterday to discover Trapper Keeper from Limbic Logic. It installs as a menubar item and when you activate it (by clicking or hovering over the menubar icon, or with a global hotkey) it drops a search box. Start typing and if its database contains a note that matches the search text, it will drop down from the interface as above. If it does not match anything, when you press return it will create a new note with that text (which you can continue to edit). It's a little bit confusing in that ESC will cancel (TAB or ENTER saves), but I really like the idea. You can also use Trapper Keeper to launch a Spotlight or Google search by pressing the appropriate keyboard shortcut instead of return. Finally, Trapper Keeper can automatically sync notes with your iPod. All in all, I like the concept and if I were not a committed Quicksilver addict, I think Trapper Keeper might just find a place in my menubar.

Trapper Keeper is $18 and a demo is available.

  • Apple Store Refurb Watch

    Filed under:

Right now, Apple's online Mac refurb section looks like a Piggly Wiggly in Atlanta the day before a big ice storm. The shelves are practically empty, waiting for a big restock. No MacBook Pros, no MacBooks, a few Powerbooks and iMacs, no minis.

So where have all the refurbs gone? Well items come and go all the time. Unlike the regular store, the refurb section only shows the available stock. And right now you can get some fabulous deals on iPods even if the Mac deals are few and far between. You can pick up a new, current generation 1GB shuffle for $49 or a pregnancy-test-style 1st generation 1GB shuffle for only $39. Nanos start at $119 and refurbished RED nanos are selling for $169 (4GB) and $209 (8GB). A refurb 5G 30GB video iPod will set you back just $209 and a newer 80GB model sells for $299.

  • TUAW Review: HDTV with the EyeTV Hybrid

While we eagerly await the living room convergence that the now-shipping AppleTV will bring, it's not too soon to start building up that library of HDTV media. I recently got an eyeTV Hybrid unit from Elgato (that's Spanish for "the cat," you know) and have been merrily hauling down those airborne bits of yummy video goodness. There are a few caveats to note with the eyeHybrid, but if you want to watch digital broadcast HDTV (ATSC) on your recent-vintage Mac, this is a great way to do it. Even for analog video input, it's relatively affordable at $150. There's also a suspiciously similar unit from Pinnacle, featuring the 'lite' version of the eyeTV software, announced last week for $130.

Before you consider the Hybrid, there's a basic question to be answered: how's your over-the-air TV signal? If you normally watch cable or satellite, you might not even know which standard and high-def broadcast channels are covering your house. In my locale (Brooklyn, NY) I've got pretty good OTA signal for the networks and independent channels, with the unfortunate exception of PBS. To check your location, hop over to http://antennaweb.org and give them your address for a detailed map and antenna recommendations. We'll wait...

If you can't get HD via the airwaves, cable subscribers with Firewire-equipped set-top boxes do have another DIY option for recording unencrypted HD programming (the broadcast networks, basically) -- the Apple Firewire SDK. Check out this post for a brief how-to, and this macosxhints thread for more; it's not a supported solution but it may be worth a try. There's even an all-in-one tool under development (iRecord). None of these approaches, however, will let you watch live HDTV on your Mac like the Hybrid does.

More on the EyeTV setup after the jump.
