Do you want to relive the excitement of the iPhone introduction? Well, unfortunately, you're a little bit late, as an EXTRAORDINARILY high quality painting of Steve holding up the iPhone just sold on eBay for $410. Nitrozac, a Canadian artist in the middle of a painting a day project, has blessed us with this wondrous and vile artifact of the rise of the iPhone. You can check out the auction here.

  • Bad Idea: Comparing Apple Ads to Nazi Propaganda

Like all bloggers, I'll occasionally follow an idea to a point well beyond its capabilities. (Lord knows I would like to step back and reread the iSync on Steroids piece and realize I was talking about iTunes with plug-ins...)

But there are lines you just don't cross.

One of the big ones is comparing a company you dislike to the Nazis, as ZDNet's George Ou did in the comment thread of a recent commentary he wrote that bashes Apple for the way the company allegedly overstated the annoyance of Microsoft's new security-escalation alerts. His essential claim is that Mac OS X requires users to work harder to install software or what have you (and then contradicts himself someone by mentioning he had to turn off an additional layer of security to capture his YouTube videos). But it's a somewhat rational piece before he dives over the edge in the comment thread:

And you get your IT security information from commercials now? Yes they conveyed the idea pretty well, but then again so did Joseph Gerbils. If you tell a lie often enough, people begin to believe it.

Oh. Oh, God. It's over the line to compare an ad campaign to the Nazis. It's just damn funny to anthropomorphize the leader of one of history's most insidious propaganda campaigns into an adorable woodland creature. Nerd flame-outs are the best.

  • Will Steve's Friendship With Clintons Take Down 1984 Obama Spot?

A clever video editor operating the name ParkRidge47 has made national headlines in the last two weeks with a fairly clever remix of Apple's legendary "1984" commercial that recasts presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton in the role of Big Brother, ostensibly in support of Barack Obama's campaign. Obama's camp claim to have nothing to do with the attack, and some are even speculating that Republican operatives are behind the spot, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Is this another cleverly executed assassination from the politics of personal destruction?

Who cares? The real story is whether Apple CEO Steve Jobs will insist on YouTube yanking the spot. To see the video and find out what Steve's got to do with it, click through.

You see, Steve Jobs is, or at least was, an extremely close friend of Bill Clinton's. How close? Well, in 1998, Steve let Bill live in his spare mansion, Jackling House, in swanky Woodside, California whenever he was in the Bay Area. So I'd like to propose that this offers a perfect test for the strength of Steve's continued friendship with the Clintons. If Apple doesn't order a cease-and-desist, he's switched his allegiances to Obama. If the spot comes down, he's still tight with the Clinton dynasty. Either way, this is one well-put together fake ad. Love the logo, too.

Who is the person behind the Clinton attack ad? [SF Chronicle]
