- Widget Watch: CreateTorrent
Filed under: Internet Tools, Widget Watch
Whether you're digging the recently-out-of-beta Xtorrent or you roll with a different app, you might still need a simple way to actually create a .torrent file to help with the seeding process. There are of course plenty of ways to do this, but the new CreateTorrent Dashboard widget is handy for the widget junkies in the crowd. A simple drag and drop of a folder or file will create the proper .torrent file, ready for seeding in your favorite BitTorrent application.
The CreateTorrent widget is free and available from MacUpdate.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Audio, Multimedia, Software, Internet Tools
We mentioned ecamm's Call Recorder for Skype when it first launched, and now they've released version 2.0 with a major upgrade: video recording. Video and audio settings are independently configurable, so you can adjust the quality (included uncompressed audio) to meet your needs. You can also add time indexed notes to your recordings.
Call Recorder for Skype remains $14.95 and a demo is available.

Sometimes there's a Mac app that's so functional, bulletproof and reliable, it almost drops below the radar. In my office, that app is SecuritySpy, recently upgraded to version 1.4.1. Developed by Ben Bird of BTV fame, this security camera monitoring/timelapse/motion capture tool just keeps ticking along with minimal poking and prodding, keeping a watchful eye on our network of Axis IP cameras and tracking every entrance and exit in areas of special interest. It's installed on a G5 with a couple of big drives, keeping a week or two of video available, and it's stable to the point of boredom: before the recent DST updates forced a reboot, the box was edging towards one year of continuous uptime.
New in 1.4, MPEG-4 compression support for remote video monitoring and a snazzy Dashboard widget; download the demo and try it out. If you're the DV-using sort, the current beta version supports multiple DV devices. SecuritySpy pricing varies depending on the number of video sources, topping out at $500. Version 1.4.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Nike + iPod sports kit has been a success. Many runners love the idea of their iPod not only pumping out the sweet jams as they run, but also helping to track their progress as well as keep them motivated. Sadly, the number of shoes that officially support the Nike + iPod is rather limited (the kit includes a small sensor that is inserted into the running shoe). Lucky, Nike has recently announced that they plan to offer support for the Nike + iPod sport kit in all their running shoes by the end of the year.
If only they would license the technology to other companies, then this would really take off (I'm a New Balance 992 man myself).

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Steve Jobs
Aww, doesn't it make you feel all snugly inside?
Barron's has published their list of the world's 30 top CEOs, (subscription required for the full article) and our buddy Steve Jobs is at the top of the list. In assembling their list the editors at Barron's considered things like stock market performance, investor surveys, and so on. Consistency in wardrobe was also a factor (that's a joke, in case you didn't notice).
Other notables from the tech field included Satory Iwata of Nintendo and Jong-Yong Yun of Samsung Electronics.
So, who wants to design Steve's "World's Best CEO" coffee mug?

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/26/steve-is-worlds-best-ceo/#comments - Xtorrent and Inquisitor officially out of beta
When it comes to 'lickable' interface design, there's no question that indie Mac developer David Watanabe is a top practitioner. His latest projects, the BitTorrent client Xtorrent (discussed here in beta form) and Safari search extender Inquisitor v3 are both debuting as full-fledged, bye-bye-beta products today. Inquisitor is free, and Xtorrent's Pro mode will set you back $20; the unregistered version has a download speed throttle among other limitations.
Xtorrent's journey through the beta process has resulted in some criticisms leveled: for the use of open-source code from the Transmission project that may cause problems with some torrent trackers, and for Mr. Watanabe's sometimes brusque approach to customer service. While I can't speak to the tracker issues (in general, if one torrent client doesn't work for you, try another), we have an example of good end-user experience handling with Xtorrent and a point raised by our own David Chartier about the rather harsh phrasing of the license entry dialog (over here on this Flickr thread, of all places). The developer responded to the criticism not only with a rephrased dialog (requiring a new build) but also with a license code recovery page on the Xtorrent website. Well played, sir.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Switchers, How-tos, Productivity, Tips and tricks
I'm told that one of things Switchers miss when they come over from the dark side is the ability to create new files simply by right-clicking and choosing a type from the "New" submenu in Windows Explorer (their Finder equivalent). For those people, Ankur Kothari (aka the Vacuous Virtuous), has a nice solution using everybody's favorite Mac utility: Quicksilver. Basically Alcor (the Quicksilver developer) has included a default action "Make New" which is not usable without a little setup. What you need to do is create a folder called "Templates" in ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver. In that folder you just add files of the sort you create on a regular basis, e.g. Word Documents, text documents, spreadsheets, whatever.
Now whenever you want to create a new file of that sort, just start Quicksilver and navigate to the directory where you want the file to be created (e.g the Documents folder as above), tab and select the "Make New" action, then tab to the third pane and select the file type from the dropdown list (you see above I've created two document types, a Markdown document in TextMate and a rich text document in TextEdit). Hit return, and the appropriate application will start up with an untitled document ready to go. But it gets even better, the documents you save in ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Templates do not have to be blank. Rather, as you might expect, they can be templates what already have some content (e.g. headers or formatting). This is such a handy trick that even non-Switchers may find it useful.

Filed under: Hardware, Hacks, Developer, Apple TV
The Apple TV hacks are coming fast and furious as recorded on both the Something Awful thread we already told you about, and at the Apple TV Hacks blog. Over at Something Awful, user macado shows the Apple TV successfully decoding a 720p XviD clip using the open source VLC player (though only for 6 minutes). Other users have demonstrated Firefox and iTunes running on an Apple TV as well. Meanwhile at Apple TV Hacks, there are already tutorials up on getting SSH and AFP access and even setting up Remote Desktop (VNC) and Apache.
In short, the Apple TV has been busted wide open and is well on its way to being hacked into a general purpose (if rather underpowered) mini Mac mini (Mac nano, perhaps?), running OS X 10.4.7 as you can see above. For those of you with a hankering to break your warranties, it looks like the Apple TV is eminently hackable and has a lot of potential.

Update: the 6 minute thing has to do with the fact that the Apple TV automatically resets after 6 minutes (see the comments below).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
