- Apple preps England's 10th and 11th store
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Retail, Rumors
ifoAppleStore - watchdogs that they are - report today that Apple is preparing to open two more stores in England. Specifically, the Touchwood mall in Solihull south of Birmingham has been identified as a likely location as well as Churchill Square in Brighton.
If any of our operatives on the other side of the pond spot any construction or other tell-tale signs, please let us know!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Video, Cult of Mac, Apple
Maybe I shouldn't be admitting this publicly, but I'm a big fan of South Park. So I was pleased to see the latest Apple Pro Profile is about the South Park Studios and their use of Macs. The construction paper feel is produced with Photoshop and Maya on 30 Power Mac G5s, with the final product requiring Motion, Shake, and some other software packages as well. Then the heavy lifting is done by a 120 AMD processor Linux render farm. One neat tidbit: by working nearly around the clock, they manage to push out each episode the day it airs on Comedy Central, with an entire episode being produced in only 6 days. It's an interesting look behind a fun show. Check out the complete profile on Apple's Pro site.

Filed under: Hacks, How-tos, Mods, Apple TV
Not that we condone illegal activity, but... Apple TV Hacker (yet another blog that has sprung up about Apple's latest gizmo) adds to the list of Apple TV Hacks (naturally) with this step-by-step How To: Rip DVDs to the Apple TV with MediaFork. It's very detailed and illustrated with screenshots every step of the way. It's going to take a long time, so you can judge if it's worth it to you. Either way, the Apple TV is certainly the "IT" toy this week.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

I suspect this will be of most interest to recent switchers and/or old timers with fond memories of Norton Commander. Binarynight's ForkLift is a new "dual paned file manager the Mac way." As you can see from my screenshot above it is more or less exactly what you'd expect from a two-paned file manager, with support for Mac technologies like Spotlight, Smart Folders, etc. Personally, I think I'll stick with Path Finder, but if this is the kind of thing to float your boat, it is available for download as a time limited beta.

Filed under: OS, Video, Apple TV
Whenever Apple (or any other company for that matter) comes out with a device that plays back some, but not all existing, media file formats people get upset. Apple TV suffers from this, as many people bemoaned the lack of Xvix/WMV/Divx support. Now, using only QuickTime Pro, Automator, and lots of time you can encode all those videos into Apple TV format and enjoy your video on a nice, big HDTV.

Filed under: Hardware, Hacks, Developer, Apple TV
The Apple TV hacks are coming fast and furious as recorded on both the Something Awful thread we already told you about, and at the Apple TV Hacks blog. Over at Something Awful, user macado shows the Apple TV successfully decoding a 720p clip using the open source VLC player (though he cryptically says only for 6 minutes). Other users have demonstrated Firefox and iTunes running on an Apple TV as well. Meanwhile at Apple TV Hacks, there are already tutorials up on getting SSH and AFP access and even setting up Remote Desktop (VNC) and Apache.
In short, the Apple TV has been busted wide open and is well on its way to being hacked into a general purpose (if rather underpowered) mini Mac mini (Mac nano, perhaps?), running OS X 10.4.7 as you can see above. For those of you with a hankering to break your warranties, it looks like the Apple TV is eminently hackable and has a lot of potential.

I'm not one to fiddle with the appearance of my Mac's UI. I think Apple did a pretty good job, and I see no reason to change it. That being said, certain parts of OS X's default appearance can be a little inconsistent, and the custom UI theme called UNO was designed to make OS X consistent across the board. UNO 1.5 has just been released, and it is a complete rewrite of everyone's favorite OS X theme. If you want to banish Brushed Metal from your Mac, or just like the look of the so called 'Unified Toolbar,' then UNO is worth checking out.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

In the comments to our earlier post on the multiple Dock utility Dock-It, nicleT pointed us to Dockyard, a free "dock switcher" and manager. Basically, Dockyard "allows you to have multiple docks and switch between them with one click." That one click can come via the menubar, a Dashboard widget, or a free standing application, the Dockyard Manager. The latter is a "[full]-fledged dock editor" which lets you create different Docks with different items in each one. So you can easily set up different Docks with different sets of applications (e.g. one set for working with video, another for working with audio, etc.), and switch easily between them.
Dockyard is open source and a free download from Belkadan Software.

That sound you just heard was an NDA being broken. That's right one of Sebastiaan's dev friends let him take a peek at his Leopard dev box. Being the good Mac person Sebastiaan is, he decided to look at some security enhancements in both the server and client version of Leopard. If you want all the gory details check out his post, but briefly Leopard offers much more granular control of what sort of network traffic you allow to and from your Mac. Sebastiaan also mentions the end of Input Managers, though he thinks it is a good thing (and it is, from strictly an OS security standpoint).

If you've every tried to get a spot at an Apple Store genius bar during a busy time, you know how frustrating it can be. Fortunately, you can set up an appointment using Apple's concierge service (either on a Mac at the store or online at home). But until recently, unless you were a ProCare member ($99/year), you could only make an appointment for later the same day. Fortunately, however, Apple has finally realized that it would make much more sense if you could schedule appointments further in advance. They have opened scheduling up to two days in advance for "guests" and 14 days in advance for ProCare members.
To make a reservation, just go to the Genius Bar page and select your local Apple Store from the drop-down list.

The duck is amuck: chat client Adium was updated to version 1.02 over the weekend. New in this version are plenty of bug fixes, including a few that correct issues with transferring files and folders. You can get the complete list of fixes here at the version history, and download the new version at the Adium home page or via the built-in updater in the app. Happy chatting!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Features, How-tos, Tips and tricks
No doubt you know that sharing your internet connection on your Mac is easy. For instance, if want to turn any Mac with a built-in Airport card into a wireless router (e.g. with a cable or DSL modem plugged into the built-in ethernet port), all you have to do is go to the Sharing pane of your System Preferences select it and hit start. However, what if you want to do something a little bit more complicated? In this tutorial I'll cover some other ways for turning your Mac into a router, including over FireWire and adding a second ethernet port via USB (which can be really tricky).

This week's desktop is a bit of a curve ball and interesting (in our humble opinion) for three reasons. First, this isn't Mac OS X at all: it's a hot new beta version of Ubuntu 7.04, arguably one of the most popular versions of Linux with quite a bit of steam behind it for a number of reasons, which is likely running via Parallels or Boot Camp (we knew we could make the exception because it's from Flickr user Ali Karbassi, who we've noticed submitting plenty of Mac OS X wallpapers to our TUAW Flickr Desktops Pool). The second reason we gave this penguin-fueled desktop some time in the spotlight is because of what appears to be either some sort of dual-display setup that Ali is running, or one ultra wide display that we wouldn't mind getting our hands on. The last reason, of course, actually has to deal with the wallpaper itself: it's a great shot and we'd love to know where to snag a copy!
If you'd like to see your unique, functional or otherwise interesting desktop featured in our TUAW Desktops of the Week series, check out past featured desktops as well as the original post for the rules and to get an idea of what we're looking for. Then, upload your desktop screenshot to our TUAW Desktops Flickr group. We'll feature one or more desktops each weekend, giving credit to the desktop owner, wallpaper creator and any apps featured in the screenshot (if available). Keep those desktops rolling in!
