- DRMIMaker: Automated High Dynamic Range Images
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Freeware
High Dynamic Range (wikipedia) images are all the rage these days. These images are produced by combining several different shots of the same scene with different exposure settings; this allows photographers to create images that almost jump off the screen. This HDR image of NYC made the front page of Digg a while back, and is a good example. Traditionally, HDR images are produced in Photoshop as described here, but now Jasper's DRIMaker makes creating HDR images a matter of drag and drop. You drop your set of images on the well, and then you can adjust Threshold, Luminance, and Response values with sliders until you get the image the way you want it. Jasper has a gallery of his own images to get a sense of what is possible.
Unfortunately, Jasper's site is only in German as of yet, but an English build of the software is available for download and an English language site is coming soon. The software is free, but donations are requested.
Thanks, Gunnar!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Humor, Steve Jobs, Found Footage
Apple's increasing popularity is making Steve Jobs more recognizable outside of the usual circles of computer geeks. As a purveyor of pop culture, he's ripe for satire. SNL has aired some reasonably funny skits, but Mad TV really hits a homer with this skit: Steve introduces the "iRack." It doesn't really poke fun at Steve as much as use him as a tool for social commentary. It's really funny.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes, Apple
We have previously told you about some of Apple's difficulties in certain European countries regarding putatively anti-competitive actions in tying together the iPod and iTunes. Now Macworld UK is reporting that the EU doesn't see any reason to pursue prosecution against Apple's use of DRM.
Although Norway, one of the most staunchly anti-iTunes countries, is not formally part of the EU, as IGM notes, it is part of EEA and thus would presumably be bound by any Europe-wide legal judgment. This suggests that Apple would have legal recourse against Norway, France, Germany, etc. if national regulators attempted to shut down iTunes.

When you think DVR on a Mac you think Elgato and EyeTV. Everyone I know who has one of Elgato's products totally loves it (that includes a number of bloggers here at TUAW). Miglia, you may recall, makes a number of over the air tuners for Macs that used to include EyeTV (which is Elgato's software package that brings DVR capabilities to your Mac). Notice the use of the past tense there, that's right Elgato has severed all business relations with Miglia. This means that Miglia can no longer sell or ship products bundled with EyeTV. Fear not, though, if you already have a Miglia product that came with EyeTV, you'll still get support.
On an unrelated note, Elgato has set up a page which shows you how their line of products compliment the forthcoming Apple TV. I am sure some folks out there will be glad to have this information.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Freeware
We recently told you about LicenseKeeper, a $20 application designed to keep a recording of your shareware serial numbers. Though others may disagree, I thought that $20 was rather steep for an application whose primary functionality could be adequately (if not beautifully) contained within a plain-text note. However, today I ran across SerialSticker from MacXeagle, a freeware serial number keeper with a very slick, Mac-like user interface. You just add your applications by selecting from from the Applications folder and adding in the appropriate information to each Application's record fields. It doesn't have any of the snazzy email scanning features of LicenseKeeper, but nonetheless I'm willing to cut and paste. SerialSticker will also allow you to export or synchronize the database to a flash drive.
This brings us, however, to the main downside of SerialSticker. It seems to be designed with the assumption that all the software serial numbers you'll want to keep are for applications which have a free-standing application icon. However, I have purchased applications (e.g. OpenMenuX) which appear in the System Preferences and not the Applications folder, and I have not found a way to add those applications to the database. Fortunately, the developer seems to be on the ball, and quickly responded to an email that such a feature would be added in the next version.
SerialSticker is a free download from MacXeagle.
Update: the Developer writes in to say: "Note that if you want to add a PrefPane Application, just search it in the ~/Library/PreferencePanes/ folder."

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
I found a widget back in January that did a ho-hum job of checking your Google hosted email (via Google's Apps for Your Domain service), but it doesn't always behave, and for RAM-conscious users a widget simply isn't the way to go. Fortunately, the Google Hosted Mail Notifier has risen to the challenge of providing a simple menubar item for checking your Google Hosted email, complete with customizable Growl alerts, choices in time intervals for checking mail, sounds, HTTPS connections and more.
It works really well, though I wish it used a different icon than the official Google Notifier to help differentiate it from the pack. Still, for a donationware app from Troels Bay, the same crew who brought us the Google Reader Notifier (and please, show the dev some donation love), this is a great piece of work.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Check out this nicely modded MacBook we noticed in our Flickr pool. Included on this 'book:
- A See-Thru shell from Speck
- The keys from a black MacBook (which the owner notes eases use with Ableton Live)
- An Airport Card from a Mac Pro, for 11n Airport spec goodness
- A custom rainbow Apple logo in the lid from iColours.ca

Filed under: How-tos, Productivity, Tips and tricks, Found Footage
To be honest I've never really gotten the Finder's colored labels. That is to say, I've never really understood how to use them to good effect. However, this video tutorial from Living With Mac convinced me I need to take another look at the usefulness of labels, particularly when combined with Smart Folders. The idea is rather simple, but also potentially powerful. Label your files for different project names, or with different status designations (e.g. "needs to be finished", "waiting for" (some other information or person), "archive") then create Smart Folders that search for those labels. That way your files can remain in appropriate (hierarchical) folders, yet can be temporarily grouped according to status, project, etc. As mentioned in the video, this can also be a good way of "Getting Things Done." I'll warn you the video is perhaps a little under-rehearsed, but nonetheless it has some great tips you can use right now.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

As reluctant as we might be to admit it, we have our reasons for tinkering with Windows Vista behind closed TUAW office doors. Parallels has pretty decent support for it (3D hardware is still a work in progress), though we've been having to search across the vast interwebs for some help on how to get Micrsoft's latest... 'achievement' to play nice with Apple's Boot Camp. Fortunately, someone we only know as Nja247 has posted this walkthrough at a Geocities page that guides Mac users through every step in getting a 32-bit version of Windows Vista running on a Mac. The walkthrough delves into nearly every essential step, including stripping the necessary drivers off the CD that Boot Camp creates because Apple's auto-installer for Windows breaks in Vista.
Don't get the wrong idea though: we still agree with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in saying no to Vista. Per our duties as card-carrying Mac users and bloggers, however, we still need to tinker with a few things to make sure we're staying on top of what Redmond is up to. Kinda like Ze Frank says: we're testing Vista, so you don't have to.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Hardware, iPod Family, Multimedia, Peripherals
SendStation, purveyor of miniature iPod docks-connector adapters, sends word of their newest product: the SendStation PocketDock AV. The AV offers regular USB charging and syncing functions but also sports video and audio connections, as the name would suggest, and includes a breakout cable that offers RCA L/R audio and composite video jacks, as well as S-video and USB.
They note that the "PocketDock AV is compatible with any [4th or 5th generation] iPod with Dock connector" and will "be available shortly" for $36.95. This looks like a perfect iPod companion to throw in the gear bag for watching video on the road (e.g. on the hotel TV).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We've previously mentioned a couple of ways to do Mac-based geocoding-that is, applying location information to the EXIF meta data of your photos. Now comes the latest entry in the geocoding sweepstakes: Geophoto from Ovolab. Geophoto presents you with a Google Earth like interface that you can zoom in/out and drop your photos on the appropriate spot from the Finder, iPhoto, Aperture, etc.. In addition, you can subscribe to iPhoto Photocasts or Flickr geocoded photosets. Unfortunately, although you can search for particular locations by name, political boundaries (countries, cities, etc.) do not appear on the map, nor does the zoom go down to the street level, so putting a photo in exactly the right spot is difficult. (Ovolab says they are working on adding street-level detail in the future.)
This is a very slick application, but that slickness comes at a rather steep price: $49.95. A demo (limited to 50 photos) is available for download. I think there is a lot of promise here, but this is a version 1.0 application and it shows.

A TUAW tipster who prefers to remain anonymous sent us a quick warning about a possible bad interaction between iTunes 7.1 and the P2P sharing app LimeWire:"I work at [an Apple service provider]. Today we saw [multiple] iTunes libraries completely corrupted; looks like the culprit was Limewire not playing well with the newest version of iTunes.
All had just updated to the new version of iTunes and all had Limewire set to automatically update their iTunes library with new songs. One [library] was not salvageable, though the other two were (after much pain and suffering)."
