Itunes_iconA new study from market research firm The NPD Group is a mixed bag for the music industry. To be published on Wednesday, the report says legal downloaders are likely to outnumber freeloading P2P users in 2007, but the sheer number of copyrighted files being downloaded from P2P networks is still on the rise.

The study shows that P2P growth is slowing and that three times as many households are using legal services to download music as were in 2004. But it also found a 47 percent increase in the number of songs downloaded from P2P networks in 2006 over 2005; an estimated five billion songs.

The study, which only tracks Windows PC users, also had some interesting iTunes news:

Among PC users, iTunes maintains a 70 percent share of households using a legal service and the share of song tracks downloaded; however, the average number of files purchased by the average iTunes user fell 11 percent since 2005. Songs purchased per buyer from Napster and Wal-Mart also declined, while Yahoo's digital music download sales rates held steady.

I can't help but wonder if the "average" number fell because today's "average" user is, well, more "average" and not as likely to be an obsessive Rob Gordon type.
