High-def video consultant Mike Curtis (of HD for Indies fame) has launched a new blog dedicated to the Apple TV, dubbed Apple TV Hacker, where he hopes to share his "latest reports and doodles and discoveries about what can be done with, and more importantly, TO an AppleTV."
So, if you have any interest in tooling with your brandy new Apple TV beyond playing with the standard features, this site is shaping up to be a valuable resource for in-depth Apple TV tech geekiness. Expect much more content when he receives his own device and puts it through his own "heavy paces".

Word has come in that the Apple TV has been cleverly hacked (yes, already) to play XviD format videos, according to users from the Something Awful forums.
To achieve this, the hardware hacker dissected the Apple TV, removing the hard drive and then mounting it on a Mac, where the drive pops up as a native HFS volume. (Notably, this proves that the device indeed runs a custom version of Mac OS X.) The user was then able to install Dropbear, an SSH server application, in combination with the video container Perian, and finally, a custom script was written to allow the Apple TV to properly read an XviD format video.
Normally, of course, the device only recognizes MPEG4 and H.264 format videos out of the box. No other formats have been tested as of yet, and this hack unfortunately prevents video synchronization since the it uses reference QuickTime files for the videos to properly play. Perhaps this is just the beginning, though.

We've seen this before, of course, but today DigiTimes is reporting that Leopard may be as late as October...and it's Vista's fault (kind of).
More of those infamous "reliable sources" are saying that Apple is busy adding Vista support to Leopard's integrated implementation of Boot Camp. The idea is that built-in XP support won't be enough to attract new switchers who want to use Vista.
Of course, this "reliable source" could be someone's Uncle Frank who never leaves the house, but the delay is being covered by a number of outlets. As usual, we leave you with this: Time will tell.

Sure, everyone is looking inside the Apple TV and at it, but check out what it does on screen when it's twiddling its thumbs and waiting for you to command your library! Now I don't have mine just yet; it's still hanging out in a local FedEx distribution center, so I made a friend shoot this for me (thanks John!). I heard the Apple TV just powered down after a couple minutes of inactivity, but apparently it has a screensaver mode that you're seeing here. Pretty slick for a little box, eh?

I am sure some of you are thinking, 'Enough with the Apple TV already,' but considering that even Scoble likes it, I think some more coverage is in order. Two Apple TV links worthy of your attention have come across NetNewsWire. First off, our iPod loving friends over at iLounge list the top ten geek details about the Apple TV (I'm a geek, are you?). The list includes:
- The 40 gig harddrive only has 33 gigs available for your use
- Some H.264 videos won't play on the Apple TV
- The Apple Remote does not control the volume (you have to use your TV/Receiver remote)

Paul Kafasis, CEO of Rogue Amoeba, confirms what I suspected all along: Apple TV does work with regular old TVs that have component ins. This is despite Apple's warnings that one must have a widescreen HDTV in order to take advantage of the Apple TV. I assume Apple did this to avoid confusion, and to promote the best possible Apple TV experience, but this is good news to those of you who are interested in Apple TV but don't want to plunk down the money for a new high falutin TV.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

We all bemoan the fact that most of the movies in the iTunes Store come from Disney, and its various studios, however, it looks like Starz has real reason to complain. According to this press release Starz, a cable movie channel, had signed two agreements with Disney which give Starz the power to approve of online sales of Disney movies before they happen. Starz has exclusive rights to air Disney movies, and they argue that Disney didn't check with them before agreeing to distribute movies via iTunes, and other online services.
Since His Steveness is the largest Disney shareholder, and the CEO of our favorite fruit company, I bet he is none too pleased with this news.
