- FlickrExport for iPhoto and Aperture updated
Filed under: Software
I only use one plugin for iPhoto and it is Connected Flow's amazingly useful FlickrExport for iPhoto. I know some folks think it is a little pricey, but this plugin makes posting my pictures to Flickr a breeze, and I am willing to pay a fair price for anything that makes my digital life easier. From the Connected Flow blog comes news that FlickrExport (both for iPhoto and Aperture) has been updated to resolve an issue with uploading large amounts of pictures to Flickr. Full release notes are available for the iPhoto and Aperture versions here and here, respectively.
If you're a user of either plugin be sure to download the update. A license for FlickrExport for iPhoto costs £12 whilst the Aperture plugin will set you back £14.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Retail, Odds and ends, Apple
We recently mentioned the upcoming Adobe CS3 launch (not shipping date), scheduled for March 27. Adobe has announced that they will be webcasting the launch from New York City at 3:30pm (Eastern). In addition, they will also be putting on live CS3 demonstrations at several Apple stores the next day, March 28th. So if you happen to be in SF, NYC, Chicago, Santa Monica, or London, you can head down to a local Apple store and marvel at CS3 (well if you can pull yourself away from the beta of Photoshop 3 that you've had for a couple of months). The Apple Store locations and times are listed here.

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Apple
The Mercury News reports that Apple is offering to give employees cash instead of previously-granted stock options in order to avoid tax-related penalties for those employees affected by backdated stock options. As you might recall, Apple recently came under a cloud for backdating their stock options to lower their value. At least with cash, employees will be able to record exactly the amount received rather than their perceived worth.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

All currently shipping Macs (with the exception of the Xserve) come with an Apple Remote free of charge! What a deal. As you know the tiny white Apple Remote lets you control Front Row, and when coupled with some third party apps lets you do even more.
Sik looked at the Apple Remote and thought, 'Sure that's cool, but what if you could store that remote in an ExpressCard slot, like those found on the MacBook Pro?' Hence the birth of Rex, a replacement for the Apple Remote that is capable of doing everything the Apple Remote does, and can be stowed in your MacBook Pro's ExpressCard slot.
The remote is $26.

Arik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek writes about the iPhone's new sophisticated multi-point touch screen. After reading through the 29-page Apple patent, he thinks out loud what the touch screen will bring to users. He doesn't think that the iPhone is the only application that will benefit from that screen. Laptops, remote controls, and other portable devices could use smart multi-touch technology. You could use the "pinch" (and anti-pinch) to zoom into and out of documents, control your music and other media, or even type onto a virtual keyboard without worrying about more than one finger touching the screen at the same time. Just think about a virtual piano and being able to play chords. You can't do that with single-touch technology.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Website CoolAsFunk tracked down these fabulous wooden iPod cases from Japanese wooden-toy manufacturer Asuka Koubou[1] via distributer Rakuten. Your 5G or nano iPod slips into the case, leaving access to the docking port, scroll wheel and screen. It's not entirely clear what keeps the iPod from slipping right back out again, but given how marvelous these things look, who is going to quibble about mere functionality, darling? If my ability to read Japanese pages works--and, frankly, it rarely has--it looks like these cases sell for about 5775 Yen each, or about $50 in US currency.

Miglia is aiming their new Mac Mini shaped TVMax+ squarely at the "missing link" between standard definition broadcast television and the Apple TV (and iPod). They are calling it a "content collection hub" ; the TVMax+ features a SD television tuner together with a hardware encoder that supports MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DivX allowing it to be used (via USB 2.0) with less powerful machines than products that depend on the host machine for encoding. This should allow the TVMax+ to produce recordings that can be streamed to the forthcoming Apple TV.
Given Miglia's recent loss of an EyeTV license (which we previously mentioned), I was curious to see what software they planned to use, but that remains unclear. There is a screencap of a "MigliaTV" controller widget, however, along with announced support for both the TitanTV and tvtv electronic programing guides, so it looks like Miglia is trying to roll their own solution.
The TVMax+ is £150 (~$290) and requires at least a G4/500 or any Intel processor

OS X just hit 10.4.9, the 9th major Tiger update, so what's next? Leopard, right? Philip Michaels of Macworld says hold your horses (or felines, or whatever animal properly applies here). Just because 10.4.9 + 0.0.1 = 10.5 doesn't mean that Apple won't ship 10.4.10 or 10.4.May2007 updates or even that Apple will ship Leopard in a timely manner-- though we all think it probably will.
It's already March 2007 and Leopard has generally been thought to ship "in the Spring". So when will Leopard debut? Michaels stands firm by his June 2007 prediction.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iLife, Software, Odds and ends
We recently mentioned Fmenu, the menubar Facebook interface; now comes word of an handy-looking iPhoto plugin from the Facebook developers. The plugin allows you to select images in iPhoto, create or add to a Facebook album, add captions, "tag your friends using the same quick-and-easy interface found on Facebook," and finally export the result to your Facebook account. Given my curmudgeonly and steadfast refusal to get a Facebook/My Space account I have not tested this myself, but it certainly sounds like a nice time saver for all those iPhoto using Facebookers.
The iPhoto plugin for Facebook is a free download from the Facebook developers.

Playlist magazine reports that iTunes and the Palms Casino will team up to sell recordings of live concert events from the Palms' new $80 million concert theater, the Pearl. The concert series will be sold exclusively through iTunes. The series, which is to be called "Live from Las Vegas", will premiere tomorrow, March 17th, with a performance by Evanescence. If you were to go to the live Evanescence event, you'd have to lay out $49.50 per ticket. The iTunes recording will presumably cost you only a fraction of that price.

Check your credit cards. Looks like Apple is finally charging those cards for Apple TV. With the order pages stating that "APPLE TV-USA Ships by: Mar 20 Delivers by: Mar 26", it seems as if Apple TV is finally getting ready to launch. I called around a few Apple Stores and they denied all knowledge about when store displays would go live. Just "check in again at the end of the month."
Update: Several readers report that the charges may only be pre-authorization checks.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Suppose you're in a mixed-platform environment, and you've got a library of Symantec Ghost images happily tweaked and configured for your Windows XP deployments. Wouldn't it be great if you could get those Ghost images into a form where you could use them for your Boot Camp machines? Sure, Ghost images are not really hardware-independent, but why not try?
At my office, this was a much-desired outcome; the problem was that the standard DOS disks used in Ghost imaging won't boot EFI-based Intel Macs, and even bootable CDs made with Ghost generally failed to see our multicast image server, if they came up at all.

Filed under: Odds and ends, MacBook
There's a curious meme on the web today: how to clean your MacBook effectively. Over at MacApper, Josh Holloway has apparently discovered (via InsanelyMac) that the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is the key to black Mac nirvana. And in an apparently unrelated post over at the FreeMacBlog Brian Stucki has determined that the white MacBook needs the tender loving care of Glass Plus Wipes. So there you have it: bridging the gap between black and white is a nice clean MacBook.
Update: I suppose it's worth saying: use this information at your own risk. It is a good idea to test any cleaning product on the (replaceable) battery before using it on the entire computer.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
