- Starbucks launches record label
Building on the success of its iTunes-based "Hear Music" page, Starbucks has decided to launch its own record label. Hear Music will sign its own artists, and sell its recordings through Starbucks stores and iTunes. According to the AP, Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment, says the company has focused on the success of its iTunes page. One can only presume that in addition to the standard RIAA/Simon Cowell approach[1] to signing musicians, Starbucks will also provide a small percentage of highly-decaffeinated Fair Trade Certified[TM] recordings, where lucky musicians will receive equitable royalties if ordered in Grande or Venti sizes. Because "Medium" and "Large" talents do not exist at Starbucks.
[1] You have potential but frankly I was bored.[2]
[2] I really felt your performance. You made it your own.[3]

Filed under: iLife, Software Update, Apple
OS X 10.4.9 isn't the only new kid on the block, Apple also released iPhoto 6.0.6 today. Sure, this update isn't as much fun as the OS X update is, but if you have been encountering trouble with Photocasting (anyone out there actually doing this?) or EXIF data then this update might solve your issues.
The update isn't available for download from Apple's site just yet, but if you fire up Software Update it'll be waiting patiently for you.Permalink | Email this | Comments

With a shocking and awesome $70+ million in weekend box office, the film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 has shot (and hacked, and stabbed) its way to the 3rd best R-rated opening and the all-time best March opening in US film history. Way to go, Spartans.
As noted on ballergoods.com and also at IMDB, the Mac played a big role in bringing 300 to the screen, with chunks of editing done in Final Cut and 2D graphics created in Shake. In fact, the IMDB article notes that while much of the production was on Avid systems (platform unspecified) and Linux workstations (presumably for Maya and other tools), "the filmmakers prefer Macintosh." Like we always say, there is no substitute.Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

When Nine Inch Nails released With Teeth a couple of years ago, Trent put out Garageband versions of some of the album's songs, encouraging fans to remix the music and post the results online. Well, he's done it again with "Survivalism," the first single off of Year Zero [iTunes link].
This is the full album version of the song, with all parts ready for your manipulation. Have fun, TUAWers, and let us know what you come up with!
