Every once in awhile, a general theme will emerge from the world of the Mac blog universe. I can safely say that his week's is "AppleTV Hacked", which has manifested itself in lots of ways. Above, we have AppleTV hacked to boot from USB external hard drive. We also have:

And, best of all, World of Warcraft running on an Apple TV. I've got the pics after the jump.

I had the pleasure last week to meet Bill Cockayne, director of the Stanford Center for Critical Foresight. He's a fascinating dude -- I honestly think he believes it's possible to know everything there is to know in the entire world -- and he's not far from it. He runs the wonderful Dr. Fish mailing list, which is always a great way to keep up with what's happening in innovation and foresight. He spoke as part of a series I'm curating, and after a few glasses of wine at dinner following, Bill began to reminisce about his time at Apple during the late 1980s, especially a series of short videos the company did to prototype the future, including John Sculley's famous "Knowledge Navigator" that was the starting point for what became the Newton MessagePad.

I've linked the Knowledge Navigator video after the jump, but the one at the top of the post is more interesting. Entitled "Future Shock," it depicts how technology can change the lives of the disabled, both mentally and physically. It's an astounding bit of film-making, and we're still years and years from getting to this level, and this was made in 1988. It's a powerful reminder of the role of imagination to push forward the realm of possible solutions that can be made. Really interestingly, the original master of this video is apparently missing -- the existing file is a QuickTime dump that Bill made while playing with the pre-release software. If anyone does have the original video in higher quality than this, we'd all love to see it.

Read on for the Knowledge Navigator.
