I haven't been a real benchmark junkie in awhile, but there are times when I get back into it again. Such is the case with this delightful article from the Norwegian IDG, which puts a brand-new MacBook Pro through its paces against a 1987 Macintosh SE. You can either read it in Norwegian or check out this translation. Here's what it boils down to: It takes longer for the 2007 Mac to do a few simple tasks than it does the 1987 counterpart. But the MacBook Pro is a zillion times faster otherwise. Obviously. Good graphs, though.

It's remarkable how much more fun life is when people actually care about Apple's product launches. When the iPod came out, it was years before anyone cared about it enough to bootleg it. With the iPhone, the bootlegs have hit the streets before the real thing!

Check out this insanely great fake iPhone tracked down by Engadget. Why, a person with no eyes, ears or hands might actually be convinced that they held the genuine article! And it's an "Ipod [sic] style Mobile Phone iPhone" and it comes in white, which, um...the real iPhone does not. There's also the traditional phone pad, the awesome bogus Apple logo -- this is love, folks. Who's entering their bid first?

  • iPod Reset Utility Now Supports 2G Shuffles. About Time.

Any iPod that gets used with any regularity occasionally freaks out. It's a fact of life. That's just fine when you're dealing with a traditional, menu-based iPod that can tell you exactly where it hurts and where the bad man touched it, but a real problem with the silent iPod shuffle, which is unable to communicate save by a rapid polyphony of flashing LEDs.

There has been salvation available to 1G Shuffle owners in the past in the form of the iPod Reset Utility, but we of the second generation have had to rely on luck and hope heretofore. Apple has heard our prayers, however, and their reset utility now works on 2Gs. I've had some serious issues with my shuffle in the past, including a week where it wouldn't even show up in Mac OS X and claim it was broken, so this is nice. Next time. I'll be prepared. Anyone had to run it already?
